But it was full of bends and twists. I was defeated by the theories when I reached Goa, where I was trained. Just reading“buoyancy(浮力)” and“air pressure” took me back to my maths and physics exams in school and made me sick. Further,I had to be tested on skills like the mask and regulator clearing, wearing and removing one's buoyancy control device underwater, emergency action in case of no oxygen , etc.--in the deep sea! It was against all my expectations after I came here. All I had imagined was playing with fish, sea turtles and all the other water babies we associate with underwater life. 高三阶段性练习二英语试卷 第 6 页 共 12 页 德泽 敬学 立远 After four laborious days of theory sessions, confined water dives in the pool, and open water dives in the sea with very supportive other members, I surprisingly cleared all the skill tests and theory exams. However, my instructor refused to submit my papers for the certification because I was visibly terrified and underconfident underwater although I seemed to have mastered the skills. He asked me to come back before the diving season ended and do a few more dives with him to build my confidence before he submitted my papers to PADI for the certification. To be honest, by that point I couldn't care less about my certification. My anxiety constantly kicked in, leading to a lot of unnecessary overthinking. I visualized myself drowning when I failed to adapt to pressure changes underwater on time! Over the next few weeks,I looked back at the experience and thought about what I could have done differently to have a more pleasant experience. I understood that it was a mind game and I knew what to do. Three months later,I came back to Goa to complete two dives with my instructor. I thought to myself--that was it. I took a deep breath, put on my equipment, and did a back roll into the sea. Splash! Three hours later, I made it. I found all success is about a battle of wills. 56. It involved much background information 57. Which of the following can best describe the author's instructor? A. Sincere and honest. B. Strict and responsible. C. Careful and positive. D. Humorous and helpful 58. What was a barrier to the author's diving? A. Her fear of deep water. B. Her conflict with the instructor. C. Her poor eyesight in open water. D. Her lack of a thirst for the certification. 59. What can be concluded from the author's story? A. People should refuse something dangerous B. People should learn to hide their emotions. C. A good coach is half the battle. D. A good mindset matters a lot. 高三阶段性练习二英语试卷 第 7 页 共 12 页 德泽 敬学 立远 60. What is probably the best title for the text? A. My love for diving. B. A simple way to get a certification. C. An unforgettable training experience. D. My struggles with maths and physics. C Most people often listen to music near bedtime to relax. But can that actually cause your sleep to suffer? When sleep researcher Michael Scullin realized that he was waking in the middle of the night with a song stuck in his head, he saw an opportunity. He decided to study a rarely-explored mechanism( 机 制 ): how music---and particularly songs stuck in one's head--might affect sleep patterns. Scullin said, “Everyone knows that music listening feels good. Young adults routinely listen to music near bedtime. Thus, they are easy to experience‘earworms’——involuntary musical imagery. It's a condition where a song or tune will replay over and over in our mind, and our brains continue to process music even when none is playing, including apparently while we are asleep. Scuilin's recent study included a survey and a laboratory experiment. The survey involved 209 participants who completed a series of surveys on sleep quality, music listening habits and earworm frequency. In the 50-participant experimental study, the research team played three popular and catchy songs before bedtime. They randomly assigned participants to listen to the original versions of those songs or the instrumental versions of the songs. And then they used polysomnography (PSG)---a comprehensive test of sleep---to record the participants' brain waves, heart rates, breathing and more while they were sleeping. The study showed that people who experience earworms regularly at night are six times as likely to have poor sleep quality as people who rarely experience earworms. “Almost everyone thought music improves sleep, but we have found that those who listen to more music sleep worse,” Scullin said.“What's really surprising is that instrumental music leads to worse sleep quality, including greater difficulty falling asleep, more nighttime awakenings, and more time in light stages of sleep. And instrumental music leads to about twice as many earworms.” To get rid of an earworm, engaging in cognitive(认知的) activity---fully focusing on a task, helps to distract your brain from earworms if you don't want to totally quit your music hobbies (listening to less music before bed is still encouraged). A previous study found that participants who spent five minutes writing down upcoming tasks before bed slept better. 高三阶段性练习二英语试卷 第 8 页 共 12 页 德泽 敬学 立远 61. What's the focus of Scullin's study? A. The characteristics of fine music. B. The categories of people's sleep patterns. C. The relationship between music listening and sleep. D. The development of the musical education mechanism. 62. Which of the following can best describe the“earworm” phenomenon? A. People are particularly fond of a piece of music or tune. B. People get stuck in the mental imagery of musical repetition. C. People tend to sing a song without realizing it. D. People rely on certain music to fall asleep. 63. What were the participants asked to do during the study? A. Listen to the same versions of the songs. B. Pick their favorite songs before bedtime. C. Use the PSG method to improve sleep quality. D. Offer some personal information and take a sleep test. 64. Which view would Scullin probably agree on? A. Earworm sufferers are usually sound sleepers. B. Earworms are the key to bringing about sleeplessness. C. People should listen to more gentle music before sleep. D. People should try to avoid instrumental music near bedtime. 65. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about? A. A possible solution to removing earworms. B. A suggestion from some fast sleepers. C. An advantage of cognitive activity. D. A future study into music lovers. D Gossip(八卦) has long been considered . bad for our mental well-being but it's really not. During the Middle Ages, the word gossip evolved to describe women who supported other women during childbirth. Over time and after a number of spelling changes, the term gossip took on the meaning of a familiar person, a friend, and“anyone engaging in idle talk”. There was no derogatory meaning attached to gossip until around the time of the European witch hunts (猎巫运动) in the 16th to 18th centuries. At that time, gossip was considered a tool for witches to do something evil. Thus, gossip's bad reputation began. At the same time, what was ridiculous and hard to understand was that gossip as men's talk spread 高三阶段性练习二英语试卷 第 9 页 共 12 页 德泽 敬学 立远 throughout the 17th and 18th centuries in English coffee houses. The learned men and their male students (there is little evidence of women in coffee houses, unless as servants) went there to demonstrate their intellectual talents. However, the myth that women gossip but men have serious conversations was born then. Today, gossipy women are over-represented in popular images of gossip, but research shows that men and women engage in the same amount of gossiping activity. New research also damages the impression that gossip is inconsiderable or dangerous women's talk. When interviewed about their experience of gossip at work, men often begin by saying“I'm not one to gossip, but...”, and then go on at length to gossip. They may prefer indirect phrases for gossip, such as“shop talk” and“corridor conversations”, Rather than asking What's the gossip?” on your return from holiday, men are more likely to ask“What's been going on?” Such expressions may soften the shame associated with being gossipy men. Similarly, words often used to describe people who gossip are“good listeners” and“people with good communication skills”. There is a lot of material advising gossip to be removed in the workplace. Popular ideas of gossip over emphasize the negative judgement made in gossip, but it can be associated with compassion, empathy and noticing suffering. It does not mean that all gossip is good. There are times when gossip can do harm to the reputation of people and organizations. The decision to gossip or net is always a decision related to someone's virtue. 66. What does the underlined word“derogatory” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A. True. B. Original. C. Negative. D. Exact. 67. What can be inferred about the opinion of women gossiping more than men? A. It varies from place to place. B. It has always been a prejudice. C. It is supported by history and research. D. It's related to individuals' level of education. 68. What does the author mainly intend to tell us through the examples in Paragraph 4? A. Gossip is very popular among males. B. Men are often shy in social activities. C. Gossip can be conveyed in different forms. D. Men like making friends with gossipy people. 高三阶段性练习二英语试卷 第 10 页 共 12 页 德泽 敬学 立远 69. Which of the following can best show the author's idea about gossiping? A. It is a double-edged sword. B. It should be removed in the workplace. C. Its supporters usually have a bad character. D. Its disadvantages outweigh its advantages. 70. What's the author's purpose in writing the text? A. To share the strengths of gossip. B. To remind people to avoid gossiping. C. To illustrate the origin of the term gossip. D. To correct people's misunderstanding of gossip. Just before turning fifty years old, I had a happy trip of riding a motor scooter(小型摩托车).
