These are some of the best popular science books for children, which should keep the young minds full of ideas long into the future. Amazing Jellyfish This book includes plenty of impressive facts. The first-person style of the author helps to keep the attention of young readers, by including personal stories and avoiding all pages of words. Each part is divided into detailed drawings and valuable information. The book has fun jokes about jellyfish, a maze (迷宫) with sea trash, and more. A Brief History of Stuff DK has chosen a mix of many different things for this unique book. From baby bottles to pens, there isn’t much of a logical (合乎逻辑) path or timeline, making it a great book for kids of all ages. Seeing a list of everyday items such as a pot or a fridge, you realize how little you know about the stories behind them. This book has all the information you need about their beginnings and impact on society. A Kid’s Guide to the Night Sky The night sky is filled with countless astronomical objects to explore and this book does its best to introduce a wide variety of them to children. The life cycle of stars and light pollution are just a few of the topics that the book introduces to its audience. It also takes a deep div e into each of the solar system’s planets and some of the amazing technology that’s working to find out more about them. Radar (雷达) and the Raft The story of radar, along with the inventors and contributing scientists, comes together in this book about the technology’s development and lifesaving uses. By connecting the story of the Bell family’s near-death experience at sea with the story of radar’s discovery, the author has produced an interesting and informative storyline. 21. What is a main feature of Amazing Jellyfish? A. Using a strictly scientific style. B. Presenting a clear timeline of events. C. Focusing on fun games about sea life. D. Matching the text and the picture well. 22. How do readers probably perceive A Brief History of Steff? A. A collection of famous speeches. B. An introduction to historical heroes. C. A guide to exploring common objects. D. A handbook on starting interest clubs. 23. Which book best suits young enthusiasts for astronomy? A. Amazing Jellyfish. B. Radar and the Raft. C. A Brief History of Stuff. D. A Kid’s Guide to the Night Sky. B I went into our laboratory feeling depressed. For months, I had been trying to recycle some of our laboratory’s plastic waste into 3D-printed laboratory tools, but it wasn’t going well. My colleagues suggested thinking about how to avoid having so much plastic waste in the first place, which boosted my spirits and led to a series of changes in how we operate in the laboratory. I raised the idea of creating 3D-printed laboratory tools out of some of our waste, but it was also tricky to get the recycled material into a consistent shape that could be fed into the 3D printer. After months of struggling, I feared that my vision might not live up to my expectations, so it was really a welcome relief when my colleagues were eager to brainstorm other ways to reduce our environmental footprint. We decided to create a group sticking to pushing for “greener” ways to operate, inviting researchers in other laboratories at our institution as well as our own. Over the following months, we launched a series of initiatives that we feel have made a difference. We introduced new recycling bins to each laboratory, designed ways to reduce our use of plastic items and purchased meters to track the energy consumption of various pieces of laboratory equipment. That helped us create rules for each device, which we outlined on stickers: “Turn me off at the end of the day,” “Never turn me off,” or “Turn me off if empty or not in use.” We also increased the temperature of several low-temperature freezers after realizing some samples didn’t have to be stored so cold. I’m still disappointed that I was not able to fully realize my 3D-printing vision, and I am committed enough to keep trying. But I’ve also learned that if one approach isn’t working, sometimes it’s best to take a step back and look for other solutions. I’m thankful that with the help of the academic community around me, we were able to do that. 24. Why was the author upset for months? A. His lab tools were outdated. B. He failed to realize his vision. C. His idea was denied by co-workers. D. He produced too much plastic waste. 25. Why did researchers put stickers on the devices? A. To identify the ownership. B. To decorate the equipment. C. To give energy-saving reminders. D. To offer cost-efficient approaches. 26. What will the author probably do in the future? A. Develop new 3D printers. B. Seek a greener laboratory. C. Quit 3D-printing research. D. Pursue an academic degree. 27. What can we learn from the text? A. One tree cannot make a forest. B. Actions speak louder than words. C. A friend in need is a friend indeed. D. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart. C How’s this for a coincidence (巧合)? Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln were born in the same year, on the same day: Feb. 12, 1809. Although people hardly think of them together, yet we want to say that they belong together. It’s not just because they were both great men, and not because they happen to live at the same time. Rather, it’s because the scientist and the politician each started a revolution that changed the world. They were both revolutionaries in the sense that both men changed the realities when they were born. They seem and sound modern to us, because the world they left behind them is more or less the one we still live in. So, considering the joint greatness of their contributions and the coincidence of their birthdays ---- it is hard to wonder: who was the greatest man? It’s an apples and oranges--- or Superman vs. Santa---comparison. But if you limit the question to influence, very quickly the balance tips in Lincoln’s favor. As great as his book on evolution is, it does no harm to remember that Darwin hurried to publish The Origin of Species because he thought he was about to be scooped (抢先) by his fellow naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace. Lincoln, however, is unique. True, his election as the president did cause the recession (衰退) and the war, but that war seems certain to happen---not a question of if but when. Certainly we know what happened after he was murdered: Reconstruction was organized and then abandoned, leaving the issue of racial (种族的) equality unsolved for another century. Surely we should not deny Darwin’s accomplishment. But their same birthdays gave us a great opportunity to observe these men of their time. 28. Why does the author say Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln belong together? A. They were born on the same day. B. They lived in the same period of time. C. They started revolutions changing the world. D. They were both great men in the history. 29. What does the author mean by “an apples and oranges---- or Superman vs. Santa --comparison” ? A. It is hard to tell which one is greater as they are both outstanding. B. The comparison between Darwin and Lincoln is easy and obvious. C. It is difficult to compare them as they are as famous as Superman and Santa. D. There is no point comparing them because they were born on the same day. 30. Lincoln’s contribution to the world can be best described as__________ A. narrow. B. aggressive. C. independent. D. ground-breaking. 31. What can we learn from the passage? A. Lincoln’s success in election caused reconstruction. B. Lincoln had tried to solve the racial problem. C. Darwin was unique compared with Lincoln. D. Darwin’s theory is similar to Lincoln’s belief. D Recent developments in robotics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning have brought us in the eye of the storm of a new automation age. About half of the work carried out by people was likely to be automated by 2055 with adaption to technology, a McKinsey Global Institute report predicted. Automation can enable businesses to improve performance by reducing errors and improving quality and speed, and in some cases achieving outcomes that go beyond human capabilities. At a time of weak productivity growth worldwide, automation technologies can provide the much-needed promotion of economic growth, according to the report. Automation could raise productivity growth globally by 0.8 percent to 1.4 percent. At a global level, technically automated activities involved 1.1 billion employees and 11.9 trillion U.S. dollars in wages, the report said. The report also showed that activities most influenced by automation were physical ones in highly structured and predictable environments, as well as data collection and processing. In the United States, these activities make up 51 percent of activities in the economy, accounting for almost 2.7 trillion dollars in wages. They are most common in production, accommodation and food service, and the retail (零售) trade. And it’s not just low-skill, low-wage work that is likely to be influenced by automation; middle-skill and high-paying, high-skill occupations, too, have a degree of automation potential. The robots and computers not only can perform a range of routine physical work activities better and more cheaply than humans, but are also increasingly capable of accomplishing activities that require cognitive (认知的) capabilities, such as feeling emotions or driving. While much of the current debate about automation has focused on the potential that many people may be replaced and therefore lose their financial resources, the analysis shows that humans will still be needed: The total productivity gains will only come about if people work alongside machines. 32. What is the report mainly about? A. Comparisons of robots from different countries. B. Analysis of automation’s potential in economy. C. Prediction of the unemployment problem. D. Explanations of the concept of artificial intelligence. 33. What might happen in 2055 according to the text? A. Automation will cause weak productivity growth. B. Automation will reduce employees’wages. C. Activities like data collection and processing will disappear. D. Activities involving feeling emotions can be performed by robots. 34. How does the author feel about human workers? A. Worried. B. Mixed. C. Optimistic. D. Doubtful. 35. Which can be a suitable title for the text? A. Automation: A future replacement for humans? B. Robots: A challenge to all humans? C. Retail trade: Where to go from here? D. Automation: Who is the eventual winner? 第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 So you want to know how to look more confident and think body language is the key? Ms. Carson said the rest would go on the next day. “When will we get the real sets (布景)?” Kristie pointed to the cardboard castle. “These are the real sets,” Ms. Carson said, “We don’t have an art teacher this term. So that’s the best we could do.” Kristie and I walked out. I praised Kristie for her good job. I told her everyone would love the play. Kristie thanked me but she was worried about the sets. But one night, a lady was tired of listening to the piano and asked him to sing a song. So he did. He had never sung in public before. Now he was singing for the very first time! Nobody had expected he could sing so beautifully! All the people present had a good time and the pianist was also very happy because he found that he could sing well. He may have lived the rest of his life as a no-name pianist in a no-name bar. Now he found, by accident, his ability to sing, so he went on working hard on singing. Later, the pianist became one of the best-known singers in the US. His name was Nat King Cole. You, too, have skills and abilities that you haven’t found. You may not feel that your talent is great, but it may be better than you think. With hard work, most skills can be improved. Besides, you may have no success at all if you do nothing about your talent. 第二部分:阅读理解 (共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题; 每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项 (A、B、C和D) 中, 选出最佳选项。 A Looking to inspire curious young minds? For months I had been trying to recycle some of our laboratory’s plastic waste into 3D-printed laboratory tools, but it wasn’t going well. 【答案】24. B 25. C 26. B 27. 【答案】28. C 29. A 30. D 31. B 【解析】 【分析】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了同年同月同日生的达尔文和林肯的贡献,相比之下,林肯的贡献更具开创性。 【28题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段中的“yet we want to say that they belong together. It’s not just because they were both great men, and not because they happen to live at the same time. Rather, it’s because the scientist and the politician each started a revolution that changed the world.(然而,我们想说,他们属于一起。这不仅仅是因为他们都是伟人,也不是因为他们碰巧生活在同一时代。相反,这是因为科学家和政治家各自开启了一场改变世界的革命。)”可知,达尔文和亚伯拉罕·林肯他们各自发起了一场改变世界的革命。故选C项。 【29题详解】 句意理解题。根据第二段的“So, considering the joint greatness of their contributions and the coincidence of their birthdays ---- it is hard to wonder: who was the greatest man?(因此,考虑到他们共同的伟大贡献和他们生日的巧合,很难去想:谁是最伟大的人?)” 根据第三段中的“Certainly we know what happened after he was murdered: Reconstruction was organized and then abandoned, leaving the issue of racial (种族的) equality unsolved for another century.(当然,我们知道在林肯被谋杀后发生了什么:重建被组织起来,然后被放弃,使得(林肯曾致力于解决的)种族平等这一问题在下一个世纪也没有得到解决。) ”可知,林肯曾试图解决种族问题,故选B项。 D Recent developments in robotics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning have brought us in the eye of the storm of a new automation age. 【答案】32. B 33. D 34. C 35. But when the last bell rang, she became nervous (紧张的). She asked whether I could stay with her. I wanted to say no, but then I realized I couldn’t leave yet. My parents had signed me up for the late bus because I thought I’d be in the play. So I followed her to the hall. I sat in the third row, wishing I were in my room drawing. I saw Ms. Carson pulled a cardboard (硬纸板) castle onto the middle of the stage. It was brown with small windows and doors. After that, Ms. Carson turned on the music, and Kristie and the Prince started dancing. I had to admit, Kristie was really good. When Ms. Carson hit a piece of metal with a little stick 12 times, Kristie ran off the stage and dropped her left shoe. The curtain came down. I spent that evening drawing. I came up with detailed and colorful designs for the sets, including a grand castle and a beautiful garden. The next day, I showed my sketches to Ms. Carson. She was thrilled and immediately decided to gather a team of students to help create them. Over the next few weeks, a group of us worked hard during our lunch breaks, cutting, painting, and assembling the sets in the art room. The excitement grew as we watched our ideas come to life. Finally, opening night arrived. The lights dimmed, and the audience fell silent as the curtain rose. The transformation was amazing. The stage was now a magical fairy tale world, with a stunning castle and vibrant scenery. Kristie performed beautifully, and the audience was enchanted. After the final bow, Ms. Carson invited me on stage and thanked me for my contribution. The applause was overwhelming, and at that moment, standing in the spotlight, I felt like a part of the show.
