Then, at 20, I was introduced to photographer David Liittschwager, who hired me to help him with a magazine assignment on marine life. David’s assignment was to document the amazing biodiversity found in the ocean. My role was to collect specimens for him to photograph. Every night, I would cast a floating lamp. Like moths drawn to a flame, mysterious creatures would emerge from the depths in search of this light. I’d then set up aquariums to house them as they waited for David to take their shot. Those evenings made me feel as if I were on another planet. I had never imagined such strange life-forms could exist in our oceans. But I didn’t grasp the true magic of what was in front of me until I saw the photographs David took. The biggest surprise was his image of a baby flounder. I caught this fish by accident. Only later did I notice its two tiny eyeballs staring back at me. But David’s photograph of this flounder revealed a universe of detail that even my eager eyes had missed. His macro lens magnified its ribs (肋骨). The lightning-fast exposure froze its motion. A precisely aimed light released the rainbow hidden in its skin. And the black background removed all distractions to focus our attention on the quiet beauty at hand. Years after that project, I was snorkeling (潜泳) on a shallow reef. Out of the darkness, another baby flounder emerged and settled on my mask. This time I knew what to look for. Before working for David, I had assumed the goal of photography was simply to reproduce an observation so that others could share the same experience. It had never occurred to me that photography could expand our visual perception and therefore teach us to look at the world from new perspectives. 4. What was the author’s role in the magazine assignment? A. Photographing the marine life. B. Documenting the amazing biodiversity. C. Building an aquarium for marine research. D. Attracting and gathering species of marine life. 5. What surprised the author about the image of a baby flounder? A. The advanced techniques of lighting. B. The strange appearance of the small fish. C. The accurate display of its comprehensive details. D. The unexpected effect of background processing. 6. What can we infer about the author from the text? A. He launched a local snorkeling project. B. He achieved his dream by taking up photography. C. The project motivated him to start ocean research. D. The experience changed his view of photography. 7. What is the true magic of photography? A. To record an observation result. B. To help people see the world anew. C. To share one’s specific experience. D. To reveal visible wonders of the world. C The farms of the future may look very different from that of today. That’s because farms do not have to be outside anymore. They also won’t have to be above ground. In London, 100 feet below the streets there was a huge empty space. Richard Ballard and Steven Dring, founders of the company Growing Underground, thought it would be an ideal spot to build a hydroponic (水栽) farm. After all, these types of farms are doing well in other indoor spaces. Founded in 2015, Growing Underground’s farm grows microgreens and salad leaves using hydroponic technology that grows plants in water but not soil. In fact, the company said that its hydroponic technology allows for the perfect pest-free growing environment. These methods use about 70 percent water less than traditional field agriculture and all the nutrients are kept within a closed circle system. They can grow the greens all year round because they are not affected by weather or growing seasons. But it is the LED lighting system that is the key to growing food underground. Ballard said, “Already, LEDs allow the growers to change the flavor of the greens, as their sugars and starches develop differently under different light spectrums (光谱).” Right now, the company only sells greens with a lot of leaves because they are the only crops that grow fast enough to be economically feasible but Ballard believes that will change. “As technologies improve, you’ll see soft fruits, cucumbers, peppers,” he said. The company’s goal is to keep food local. They say that all of the greens can be in your kitchen within four hours of being picked. They currently sell to local restaurants in London, but they hope to be entering the local groceries soon. 8. What makes the underground farm possible? A. The rich soil. B. The great demand for fruits. C. The hydroponic technology. D. The good weather condition. 9. What is the function of the LED lighting system? A. To get rid of pests. B. To increase the temperature of underground farm. C. To allow greens to grow rapidly. D. To provide various light spectrums. 10. What does the underlined word “feasible” in Paragraph 5 probably mean? A. Difficult. B. Challenged. C. Impossible. D. Achievable. 11. What does the company expect of the underground farm? A. It’ll benefit more customers. B. It’ll be environment-friendly. C. It’ll keep food fresher for longer. D. It’ll use the latest technology. D A theme at this year’s World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting in Switzerland was the perceived need to “speed up breakthroughs in research and technology.” Some of this framing was motivated by the climate emergency, some by the opportunities and challenges presented by generative artificial intelligence. Yet in various conversations, it seemed to be taken for granted that to address the world’s problems, scientific research needs to move faster. The WEF mindset is similar to the Silicon Valley dictate—to move fast and break things. But what if the thing being broken is science? Or public trust? The WEF meeting took place just two weeks after Harvard University President Claudine Gay stepped down after complaints were made about her political science scholarship. In response, Gay requested corrections to several of her papers. Although it may be impossible to determine just how widespread such problems really are, it’s hard to imagine that the scene of high-profile scholars correcting and retracting papers has not had a negative impact on public trust in science and perhaps in experts broadly. In recent years we’ve seen important papers, written by outstanding scientists and published in celebrated journals, retracted because of questionable data or methods, hence a question: Are scholars at supercompetitive places such as Harvard and Stanford rushing to publish rather than taking the time to do their work right? It’s impossible to answer this question scientifically because there’s no scientific definition of what constitutes “rushing. ”But there’s little doubt that we live in a culture where academics at leading universities are under tremendous pressure to produce results—and a lot of them—quickly. The problem is not unique to the U. S. In Europe, formal research assessments—which are used to allocate (分配) future funding—have for years judged academic departments largely on the quantity of their output. A recent reform urging an emphasis on quality over quantity allowed that the existing system had created “counterincentives. ” Good science takes time. More than 50 years elapsed between the 1543 publication of Copernicus’s On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres. And it took just about half a century for geologists and geophysicists to accept geophysicist Alfred Wegener’s idea of continental drift. There’s plenty of circumstantial evidence that scientists and other scholars are pushing results out far faster than they used to. Consider the sheer volume of academic papers being published these days. One recent study put the number at more than seven million a year, compared with fewer than a million as recently as 1980. Some of this growth is driven by more scientists and more co-authorship of papers, but the numbers also suggest that the research world has prioritized quantity over quality. Researchers may need to slow down if we are to produce knowledge worthy of trust. 12. WEF meeting in Switzerland advocated that ________. A. researchers need to achieve breakthroughs more rapidly B. public trust in science is not supposed to be easily broken C. WEF and Silicon Valley reach an agreement to move fast D. climate emergency and AI push scientific research hard 13. Which of the following examples fails to prove that good science takes time? A. Gay’s correction and retraction of papers. B. Publication of Copernicus’s theory. C. High-profile scholars’ tremendous output. D. Acceptance of the idea of continental drift. 14. The underlined word “counterincentives” in para. 5 probably means ________. A measures to increase quantities of output B. discouragements of high quality papers C. rewards for leading universities’ research D. contradictory motives for future funding 15. Which of the following is best title of the passage? A. WEF Coincides with Silicon Valley B. Collapse of Public Trust C. Dilemma between Quantity and Quality D. A group of teenagers, the members of the Springdale Youth Committee, gathered at a table. They looked determined and worried. Among them was Emily, a smart but often unnoticed girl who loves helping others. For weeks they had been organizing a fundraising event for the local homeless shelter, as the shelter struggled to assist the increasing number of individuals seeking help. The big day was one week away, and everything was set — until they discovered another group had a similar charity event on the same day. This could divide the people who might come and the donations they hoped to get. “We can’t change the date now,” said Tom, a senior member, his voice filled with frustration. “We’ve already sent out invitations, and the place is booked.” Emily listened quietly to the discussion. She knew changing the date wasn’t possible, but she also realized competing with another worthy cause could hurt both sides. After the meeting ended without a solution, Emily decided to take action. She spent the next day looking into ways to work with the other group, hoping to find a way that would help both the homeless shelter and the other cause. The next day, she came to the committee with a suggestion. “What if we join our events?” she asked. “We could share resources, work together on promoting, and most importantly, make sure both causes are supported by the community.” The members looked at each other, some doubtful, others interested. “That’s a great idea, Emily, but how will we get them to agree?” Laura, another member, asked. Emily had already thought this through. “I’ll talk to their organizer and show them the benefits of a joint event.” She knew the path ahead would be challenging, but she was determined to make it happen for Springdale and its people. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Para 1 The committee agreed to let Emily lead this effort. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Para 2 After days of negotiation, Emily finally got a positive reply. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 1 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
