In the Pacific Northwest during winter, 5:15 a.m. might be the dead of night. The alarm goes off and the only light is the red glow from my clock. My body says, “Go back to bed.” But I don’t. I know my running partner will be waiting in the street and I’m not going to stand her up. Then I walk onto the road, complaining about the cold and wishing I were back under my warm covers.
If you’d have asked me a year ago if I could see myself running at 5:15 on a winter morning, I’d have laughed. Morning just wasn’t my thing and running in the morning was something I didn’t even consider. “I prefer to work out in the middle of the morning or in the afternoon,” I’d say to my friends who go to the gym before work.
Then, last fall I reconnected with an old friend. She’d been running in the morning and taken off forty pounds. When I looked in the mirror, I knew I could benefit from the same kind of weight loss. I asked if I could join her. I knew I needed to change something if I was going to get back in shape.
The first two months were especially hard, because we ran twice a week at 5:15 a.m. and I slept till 7:00 the other mornings. But as I’ve adjusted to the routine of running, I’ve discovered great joys that make it even more worthwhile than a little weight loss.
While I haven’t lost forty pounds yet, it’s amazing how much more energy I have and how much stronger I feel. Because of the morning run, the rest of my day is more productive. I wouldn’t say I’ve become a morning person, but I would say morning running is now my thing.
24. What can we know about the author from paragraph 1?
A. 5:15 a.m. is the best time for her to exercise.
B. She prefers to run alone without any company.
C. She goes for a run despite the cold and early rise.
D. She always takes the run with many warm clothes on.
25. What was the author’s attitude to morning running a year ago?
A. Unfavorable. B. Scared. C. Confused. D. Supportive.
26. What made the author begin to run in the morning?
A. Her partner’s encouragement. B. Her friend’s suggestion.
C. Realizing the harm of being fat. D. Realizing the benefits of running.
27. What effect does morning running have on the author?
A. She has become slim again. B. She has become more energetic.
C. She has become more confident. D. She has become more imaginative.

According to the World Economic Forum (WEF), eight million tons of plastic waste is being poured out into the oceans every year. That’s the equivalent (相等物) of an entire garbage truck being dumped every three minutes, and the source of the problem — the world’s cities. In Amsterdam, a simple solution has been found that could stop up to 86 percent of plastic waste ever reaching the oceans — a barrier made of bubbles (气泡).
The way the bubble barrier system works is basically that it is a tube placed diagonally (沿对角线地) on the bottom of the waterway. “The tube has a lot of tiny holes,” according to Phillip Ehrhorn, Chief Technology Officer in the Great Bubble Barrier. “We pump air through it, and the air bubbles will rise towards the surface. The plastics are brought to the surface with the air bubbles and then: with the natural flow of the river, towards one side of the river. Then the other part of the bubble barrier system collects and removes the waste.”
“Ship traffic is a key economic driver; we won’t be able to stop that. So, we would have to find a solution which would not affect all the other existing activities and the ecosystem,” Phillip added. The bubble barrier does exactly that. While it provides no block to water traffic and sea life can pass through freely, it also catches plastic waste of all sizes.
The Great Bubble Barrier is trying to work together with Amsterdam and local Non- governmental Organizations (NGOs) to evaluate what the bubble barrier system is catching so as to carry out new policies and additional measures on land. In this way, plastics entering the water could be reduced in the first place. “Our next step is a bubble barrier within Europe and we, of course, want to move to Asia because we think we can make a lot of influence there,” said Francis Zoet, the founder of the Great Bubble Barrier.
28. What contributes to the invention of the bubble barrier?
A. Suggestions from the WEF. B. Construction of the waterway.
C. Large amounts of sea waste. D. Requests from the government.
29. What is the function of the air bubbles?
A. Creating tiny holes on the tube. B. Sending plastics to the surface.
C. Removing the waste in the water. D. Changing the speed of the river flow.
30. What does the underlined word “block” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Approach. B. Foundation. C. Brick. D. Obstacle.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Plastics entering the water will increase.
B. The bubble barrier will benefit more places.
C. The NGOs will move to Europe and Asia.
D. The city will evaluate the bubble barrier.

Intelligence could play a role, according to a Michigan State University study that investigated the early stages of learning to play the piano. Published in the journal Intelligence, the study may be the first to examine the relationship between intelligence, music talent and growth mindset (referring to whether students believe they can improve basic abilities
“The strongest predictor of skill acquisition is intelligence, followed by music talent,” said Alexander Burgoyne, the leader of the study. “By contrast, the relevance between growth mindset and piano performance is about us close to zero as possible.”
In the study, 161 undergraduates were taught how to play “Happy Birthday” on the piano with the help of a video guide. There were striking differences in the students' skill acquisition process. Some learned quickly, earning perfect marks within six minutes of practice. Others performed poly at first but improved considerably later. By comparison, some seemed to have lost their motivation and others never figured it out, performing poly throughout the study. So why did some students fail while others succeeded? To find out, the researchers gave the students some tests that measured things like problem-solving skills and processing speed, and tests of music talent that measured. They also surveyed their growth mindset.
Burgoyne said, “The results were surprising, because people had previously claimed that mindset plays an important role when students are faced with challenges, like trying to learn a new musical instrument. And yet, it didn't predict skill acquisition. That said, results will possibly differ from those with greater skills.” He added, “Our study examined one of the earliest stages of skill acquisition. Early experiences can be important, but I would warn against drawing conclusions about skilled musicians based on our study of beginners.”
But applied generally, the study's findings may be helpful in education. According to a recent review of mindset research, interventions designed to gain some achievement by encouraging children to believe they can improve their basic abilities may be fruitless.
32. What does the study by Burgoyne intend to find out?
A. How students can play the piano best.
B. Why talent is essential as a beginner pianist.
C What matters most in beginner pianists’ skill acquisition.
D. What causes the difficulty for beginners to learn the piano.
33. What does the study show about basic skill acquisition?
A. It has little relationship with mindset.
B. It requires outstanding music talent.
C It requires fast processing speed.
D. It depends on problem-solving skills.
34. Which of the following might Burgoyne agree with?
A. Learning musical instrument isn't easy.
B. Interventions are necessary for learning.
C. Mindset is key to one's musical achievements.
D. His finding can't apply to skilled musicians.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Mindset—a key role in beginner pianists
B. Intelligence—a key role in beginner pianists
C. Talent—a key role in beginner pianists
D. Skill—a key role in beginner pianists

Much of the work in today’s world is accomplished(完成) in teams. Most people believe the best way to build a great team is to gather a group of the most talented individuals. ___36___Companies spend millions hiring top business people. Is their money well spent?
___37___They focused on football, basketball and baseball. The results are mixed. For football and basketball, adding talented players to a team proves a good method, but only up to the point where 70% of the players are top talent; above that level, the team’s performance begins to decline. Interestingly, this trend isn’t evident in baseball, where additional individual talent keeps improving the team’s performance.
To explain this phenomenon, the researchers explored the degree to which a good performance by a team requires its members to coordinate(协调) their actions. ___38___In baseball, the performance of individual players is less dependent on teammates. They conclude that when task interdependence is high, team performance will suffer when there is too much talent, while individual talent will have positive effects on team performance when task interdependence is lower. If a basketball star is, for example, trying to gain a high personal point total, he may take a shot himself when it would be better to pass the ball to a teammate, affecting the team’s performance. Young children learning to play team sports are often told, “There is no I in TEAM.” ___39___
Another possibility is that when there is a lot of talent on a team, some players may make less effort. Just as in a game of tug-of-war(拔河比赛), whenever a person is added, everyone else pulls the rope with less force.
___40___ An A-team may require a balance--not just A players, but a few generous B players as well.
A. It’s not a simple matter to determine the nature of talent.
B. Sports team owners spend millions of dollars attracting top talent.
C. The group interaction and its effect drew the researchers’ attention.
D. Stars apparently do not follow this basic principle of sportsmanship.
E Several recent studies examined the role of talent in the sports world.
F. Building up a dream team is more complex than simply hiring the best talent.
G. This task interdependence distinguishes baseball from football and basketball.

【答案】24. C 25. A 26. D 27. B

Then I walk onto the road, complaining about the cold and wishing I were back under my warm covers.
根据第二段“If you’d have asked me a year ago if I could see myself running at 5:15 on a winter morning, I’d have laughed. Morning just wasn’t my thing and running in the morning was something I didn’t even consider. “I prefer to work out in the middle of the morning or in the afternoon,” I’d say to my friends who go to the gym before work. (如果你一年前问我,我能不能想象自己在一个冬天的早晨5:15跑步的样子,我会笑的。 早上不是我所喜欢的,我甚至没有考虑过早上跑步。“我更喜欢在上午或下午锻炼,”我会对上班前去健身房的朋友们说)”可推知,作者一年前对晨跑的态度是不支持。故选A。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Then, last fall I reconnected with an old neighborhood friend. She’d been running in the morning and taken off forty pounds that year. When I looked in the mirror, I knew I could benefit from the same kind of weight loss. I asked if I could join her. I knew I needed to change something if I was going to get back in shape.
【答案】28. C 29. B 30. D 31. B

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了在阿姆斯特丹,人们利用气泡屏障系统帮助阻止塑料垃圾流入海洋。
【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第一段“According to the World Economic Forum (WEF), eight million tons of plastic waste is being poured out into the oceans every year. That’s the equivalent (相等物) of an entire garbage truck being dumped every three minutes, and the source of the problem — the world’s cities. In Amsterdam, a simple solution has been found that could stop up to 86 percent of plastic waste ever reaching the oceans — a barrier made of bubbles (气泡).(根据世界经济论坛(WEF)的数据, 每年有 800万吨塑料垃圾被倒入海洋。这相当于每三分钟就有一辆垃圾车被倾倒,而问题的根源是世界上的城市。在阿姆斯特丹,人们找到了一个简单的解决办法,这个办法可以阻止多达86%的塑料垃圾流入海洋,那就是用气泡做成的屏障)”可知,大量的海洋垃圾促成了气泡屏障的发明。故选C。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“We pump air through it, and the air bubbles will rise towards the surface. The plastics are brought to the surface with the air bubbles and then, with the natural flow of the river, towards one side of the river.(我们把空气抽进去,气泡就会上升到表面。塑料和气泡一起被带到水面,然后随着河流的自然流动,流向河的一侧)”可知,气泡的作用是把塑料送到水的表面。故选B。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章第三段划线词前句“So, we would have to find a solution which would not affect all the other existing activities and the ecosystem,(所以,我们必须找到一个不会影响所有其他现有活动和生态系统的解决方案)”和后句“While it provides no block to water traffic and sea life can pass through freely, it also catches plastic waste of all sizes.(虽然它不会给水上交通提供block,海洋生物可以自由通行,但它也可以捕获各种大小的塑料垃圾)”可知,气泡屏障不会影响到水上的船舶交通。所以block意为“obstacle (障碍)”。故选D。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Our next step is a bubble barrier within Europe and we, of course, want to move to Asia because we think we can make a lot of influence there.(我们的下一步是在欧洲建立一个泡沫屏障,当然,我们希望转移到亚洲,因为我们认为我们可以在那里产生很大的影响)”可推断,气泡屏障创始人Francis Zoet希望泡沫屏障将使更多的地方受益。故选B。
D
C. What matters most in beginner pianists’ skill acquisition.
D. What causes the difficulty for beginners to learn the piano.
33. What does the study show about basic skill acquisition?
A. It has little relationship with mindset.
B. It requires outstanding music talent.
C. It requires fast processing speed.
D. It depends on problem-solving skills.
34. Which of the following might Burgoyne agree with?
A. Learning musical instrument isn't easy.
B. Interventions are necessary for learning.
C. Mindset is key to one's musical achievements.
D. His finding can't apply to skilled musicians.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Mindset—a key role in beginner pianists
B. Intelligence—a key role in beginner pianists
C. Talent—a key role in beginner pianists
D. Skill—a key role in beginner pianists
【答案】32. C 33. A 34. D 35. B

Much of the work in today’s world is accomplished(完成) in teams. Most people believe the best way to build a great team is to gather a group of the most talented individuals. ___36___Companies spend millions hiring top business people. Is their money well spent?
___37___They focused on football basketball and baseball.
E. Several recent studies examined the role of talent in the sports world.
F. Building up a dream team is more complex than simply hiring the best talent.
G. This task interdependence distinguishes baseball from football and basketball.
