A 篇
21. D 根据 American Sign Language (ASL)部分中的 students will learn the
essential signs of alphabet ( 字 母 表 ) fingerspelling and various categories of
vocabulary including family signs, WH-Questions and directional signs. Additionally,
students will gain insights into the distinctions between the hearing and the deaf
communities.
22. B 根据 English Skills for High School 部分中的 we will read Madeleine
L’Engle’s fantastic novel A Wrinkle in Time, we will craft our own imaginative
We’d gotten an early-morning call telling us to
move out immediately two weeks earlier可知,显然当时作者一家离开得很匆忙。
How will we survive this? It felt as if our lives had been
wiped out.
It now sits in a place of honor in our new
home, a reminder that we can begin again可知,本文应该是写于作者一家重新安定
28. A 根据该划线词后面的 with exhausted fish stocks鱼类资源枯竭,可知 barren
Due to the presence of the underwater sculptures, some species
not seen in a long while such as groupers and lobsters have rejoined the waters, 这表
32. D 第一段中的...incredibly lightweight solar cells that can be placed on a variety
of surfaces 和第二段中的... applied to many different surfaces, ...they are capable of
producing approximately 18 times more power per kilogram compared to traditional
33. C 第三段中提到,a problem that researchers are addressing before these solar
cells can be mass-produced is how to protect the solar cells from oxygen and
moisture(湿气).
34. B 根据第三段中的 adding such a layer would remove the major advantage of
the new ultra-thin solar cells可知,添加一层玻璃会削弱新型超薄电池目前的主要
There are three common types of valleys: V-shaped valleys,
U-shaped valleys and flat floored valleys
check out“调查;查看”;take out“带某人
wear sb.(out) “使筋疲力尽”;bother sb.“使烦恼”;shelter sb.“保护”。
43. B 此题考查搭配,a cure for the blues“治疗抑郁症的疗法”,这里指“骑自
barrier
“障碍”。
也与文章第一句“I love riding a bike to work no matter the weather”相呼应。
45. D 根据下文“reminding me that there is beauty to be found even in the darkest
sightings of squirrels, deer and raccoons 指向旅途中的 beauty,
brighten指“增添乐趣”。impressed by“对...印象深刻”;surrounded by“被包围”;
disturbed by“被打扰”。
46. A 结合下文的“evolved from annoyed to optimistic”可以推断,这里作为
47. D “在骑行过程中我面对并思考人生中的挑战”,所以选 D。trials“考验”;
breaks“短暂休息”;routines“常规”。
peak“顶峰”;bottom“底部”;limit“极限”。
此处要结合前文的“Angry at my boss? Mad at my
partner?”。 “from annoyed to
shocked“震惊的”;frustrated
“沮丧的”;embarrassed“尴尬的”。
50. C 根据下文,此处指“我想把骑行的快乐传递给儿子”。pass on sth. to sb.
表示传递;carry on“继续做;坚持干”;take on“呈现,具有(特征)”;insist on
“坚持做”。
一次)他坐在自行车挂车里,告诉我骑得太慢了,路太颠簸”。involved“包括”;
occupied“占据;使忙于做某事”;spared sb.(from...)“使某人免得麻烦;使逃脱”;
risked “冒险”。
52. D 结合后文的“Your legs aren’t moving very fast.”
focused “专注于”;stressed “焦虑的”;frozen “吓呆的”。
not simply“不仅仅”。apparently“显然”;directly“直接”;extremely
“极度;非常”。
54. C 参见上一题的解析。invitation在这儿是“邀约”。struggle“挣扎,努力”;
4
urge“强烈的欲望”;must“必不可少的事”。
匆匆赶路。rush“匆忙去做”;switch“转换;转移”;lead “通往”;drive“开车;
consist of由...
encourage sb. to do sth.,不定式做
填“an”。
Dear Chris,
I’m writing to share with you my proposal for the new section. As a high school
student, I believe that our school’s English website should consider adding a new
section dedicated to career guidance.
This section could provide information about various career paths, job
opportunities, and tips for college applications. It would be beneficial for students as
it can help them explore different professions and make informed decisions about
5
their future. Additionally, it could feature interviews with professionals from diverse
fields to offer insights into the real working world. By incorporating this new section,
our school can better support students in their academic and professional
development.
Hope my proposal will be of some help.
Yours,
Li Hua
Dear Chris,
I am writing to present my proposal for an exciting new section on our school’s
English website. I believe that a section dedicated to language learning tips would be
an excellent addition.
This section could offer students valuable insights and resources aimed at
enhancing their English language acquisition journey. As learners of a new language,
we frequently encounter various challenges along the way. By providing practical
advice, this section can enable students to deal with these obstacles with greater ease.
Furthermore, it could feature interviews with linguistic experts, reviews of innovative
language learning apps and resources, as well as inspiring success stories from fellow
students.
Thank you for considering my proposal.
Yours,
Li Hua
Dear Chris,
I am writing to present my proposal for an exciting section on our school’s
English website. In recent years, with the increasing influence of China on the global
stage, it is of great significance to add a section called “Tell Chinese Stories Well in
English”.
Firstly, it could help promote Chinese culture to the world. Through vivid stories,
foreigners can better understand China’s rich history, vibrant traditions and distinctive
values. Secondly, it enhances cultural exchanges. When people from different
countries know more about China, it builds bridges of communication and promotes
mutual understanding and respect. Finally, it would undoubtedly boost our students’
sense of national identity and pride.
Thank you for considering my proposal.
Yours,
Li Hua

“Hello?” Her voice sounded as though it came from nearby and not Israel. “Hey
Tova. It’s me, Sara. I just called to tell you I love you.” My words came out in a rush.
I knew if I stopped in the middle, I wouldn’t have the courage to continue. For a long
time there was only silence on the other end. Finally she spoke, “I love you, too. I
know we aren’t as close as some sisters, but that doesn’t mean we are not missing
each other a ton.” At that very moment, tears welled up in my eyes and the invisible
wall between us was gone.
Since then, we often called each other. We shared everything, from fashion to her
favorite CD, to a boy I had a crush on as well as our school lives. The giggles filling
both ends of the phone warmed both of us, and it also made me feel safe. I also started
counting down the days until she returned home so I could give her the hug I didn't
give her when we parted and say, “I’m so glad to have you home.” I was grateful that
this separation did not distance us, but instead marked a new beginning of our sisterly
closeness.
Text 1
W: Matthew, have you set off for the graduation party?
M: Hello, Kate. I’m weeding in the garden right now.
W: Oh, I was expecting that you were driving to the party. I’ll call you later.
Text 2
M: All right, dear. Pick two daily courses that you want. For example, if you want this
biology course, click here.
W: Got it. But should I choose the morning or afternoon classes?
M: Well, it’s really up to you!
Text 3
W: I’m trying to lose weight but nothing seems to be working. I’ve tried Yoga and
swimming. And I’m thinking about finding a personal trainer.
7
M: What I found helpful was counting calories. That way you can work out how
many calories you have to burn.
Text 4
M: What are you putting on the wall, Catherine?
W: They’re posters for our championship match next Saturday. I want to make sure as
many students come as possible.
M: Next Saturday? I can’t wait to see you guys play!
Text 5
W: Hold on, Jason. I’ve got to sit down for a second.
M: What’s wrong? Wow, you don’t look so good. How long have you been out in the
sun?
W: Too long, I think. I’m very dizzy and thirsty.
M: Well, have some water first.
Text 6
M: I mean, really, this is such an surprising encounter! It must have been … oh … 40
years now! Ah yes, it was the winter of 1984. I distinctly remember your good father
sitting in the office.
W: So you were his co-worker that time?
M: Yeah, we taught history in those days. I moved on to writing as a career only five
years ago.
W: So, how did you know that I was his daughter?
M: It’s the shape of your ears. Your father had them, too.
Text 7
W: Hey, Dad. My birthday just passed, and Christmas isn’t for months, but I’d be so
grateful if I could borrow some cash for shopping.
M: Well, Lucy, what are you looking to get?
W: Emily and Grace just got some new make-up products. I really want to get some!
M: Dear, we have so many beauty products around the house. Do you really need
them, or do you want them just because your friends have them?
W: Maybe both. I want to look as good as my friends. When they came back from the
mall with new products, they looked amazing.
M: I know, dear. But remember, beauty starts inside first. No beauty product in the
world could compete with the beauty of a confident person. So, please, consider this
before buying a new product.
Text 8
W: Here’s your room key and the password for the Wi-Fi. Also, I noticed that your
accent sounds French. Where are you from?
M: I’m from a small country called Monaco, surrounded by France. Oh, and we speak
French there.
W: How interesting! I’ve never been to Europe, but I’ve heard Monaco is a small but
beautiful country.
M: Sure, it’s lovely. It has become a popular tourist destination for very wealthy
people, similar to Abu Dhabi. There is a car racetrack that runs throughout the
country.
8
W: It sounds much more wonderful than my hometown here in South Korea.
M: Maybe, but it’s also very costly to live there! Almost 30% of the country’s
population has over one million dollars — I certainly don’t have that much money, so
I decided to study overseas, which costs less than studying in Europe.
W: Oh, that’s interesting, because this hotel is usually for tourists and business people.
M: I’m moving into the dormitory tomorrow and just needed a place to spend the
night!
Text 9
W: Excuse me, I came here for lunch earlier and it seems I’ve lost my new phone. I
don’t suppose you’ve found it, have you?
M: Not to my knowledge, madam, but it may have been put into the Lost Property
box. Let’s go and see.
W: Thank you! I’ve looked everywhere that I’ve been today…the bookstore, the
supermarket…and I’ve had no luck, so this restaurant is my last hope!
M: Okay…We have a couple of phones here. Can you describe yours to me?
W: It’s a pink one with a white case. Oh, sorry. I forgot that I just put a new black case
on it.
M: Okay. This could be it.
W: Oh, I hope so!
M: Can you tell me what background photo you have on your home screen, so that I
know it’s yours?
W: Sure. It’s a picture of me and my sister in the forest. No, wait! That was my old
phone. My new phone has a picture of my cat on the beach.
M: That’s enough information for me! Here you are.
W: That’s it! Thank you so much!
Text 10
Attention, students. This is an announcement for all third grade students!
Tomorrow is the day when you can choose what musical instrument you want to learn
to play in the school band. The gym will be filled with musical instruments for every
student to try. When you find an instrument you like, find Ms. Anderson on the other
side of the room and tell her your name and what instrument you would like to play in
the band. Playing an instrument is a great learning opportunity. Learning to play an
instrument teaches you how to practice and how to read music. Many of our students
have gone on to play in their high school bands. If you would like to play an
instrument in the band, your parents have to pay $60 per year. This fee is due next
week. It is for the music books, the cleaning supplies, and the instrument rental(租赁).
If you play the guitar, the fee is $10 more because the strings(弦) are very expensive.
If you are not able to pay the fee but you would still like to play an instrument this
year, please visit Ms. Anderson’s office.

I drove through our neighborhood with my husband, the place we’d called home for 26 years. The
Sierra Nevada foothills, once thick with towering pines, were unrecognizable. The ground was covered
with a thick blanket of ash.
We’d gotten an early-morning call telling us to move out immediately two weeks earlier. The
wildfire tearing through Northern California had spread and was heading our way. We jumped in the car
with our dogs and a few belongings. For days, we bounced from hotel to hotel, desperate for news.
What finally came wasn’t good. Our house had been right in the fire’s path. Now we’d been given
permission to return. My husband and I brought shovels(铁铲 ), work boots, masks and gloves. We
would “rescue” anything we could.
We drove slowly through the ruins, where chimneys marked the spots where homes once stood. I
wasn’t prepared for what awaited us. Our house was nothing but rubble(碎石). Most of our belongings,
including my precious collection of inspirational books, were all gone.
I wiped away tears as we dug through the ash. We uncovered a cast-iron umbrella stand that used
to stand beside our door, and a decorative dish our son had given me, blackened but whole, which
reminded us of bits and pieces of our life. How will we survive this? It felt as if our lives had been
wiped out.
We stopped digging in late afternoon. My husband loaded what we’d found in the car and said,
“Let’s go.” I turned to get in the car. That was when I noticed something stuck to my boot. A piece of
paper. I picked it up. Its edges were burnt, but the words were surprisingly clear, “ If life seems difficult,
I pause and reflect on the blessing sometimes hidden within every circumstance. With renewed faith and
courage, I begin again.”
The words must have come from one of my books, a passage I couldn’t recall but now said
everything I needed to hear. I framed that piece of paper and kept it on the nightstand in every hotel and
motel we stayed in over the following months. It now sits in a place of honor in our new home, a
reminder that we can begin again.
24.What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A.The author’s family left home hurriedly.
B.The author’s family lost everything in the fire.
C.The wildfire first broke out close to the author’s home.
D.No warning about the wildfire was given two weeks earlier.

25.How might the author feel when she was digging through the ash?
A.Guilty. B.Astonished. C.Hopeless. D.Grateful.
26.When was the text written?
A.When the wildfire spread.
B.When the author stayed in a hotel.
C.While the author’s house was being rebuilt.
D.After the author’s family settled down again.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.A narrow escape. B.Rising from the ash.
C.An attempt at a rescue. D.Awildfire in North California.

Nestled in the waters off the coast of Tuscany, Italy, an unusual seafloor sculpture park is
safeguarding its ocean environment.
Fisherman Antonio Verdi has been casting his nets in these waters since his youth along the
Maremma coastline. It was in the 1980s that he began to notice the clear signs: the seabed was
becoming barren, with exhausted fish stocks. Until recently, Antonio Verdi has found himself not only
competing with the decline of ocean resources but also with threatening practices of illegal “bottom
trawlers(拖网捕鱼的人 )”, who randomly spoil a large quantity of ocean life as they fish, dragging a
weighted net along the seafloor behind their boats.
Antonio Verdi’s style of artisanal fishing(手工捕鱼), in contrast, is friendly to nature as damaging
the ecosystem could reduce fishermen’s income. He understood that the success of his fishing activity
was linked to the good state of the environment. The underwater “House of Fish” sculpture park, which
was started in 2015, was encouraged by this fisherman. “One of the most effective solutions is to
physically prevent trawling through artificial reefs, so I started working on this project, trying to
combine the protection of the seabed with something that could also give an added value to our
environment, something as beautiful as a sculpture,”he stated.
Sculptures or rocks can break weighted trawler nets. They can also function as artificial reefs,
offering habitats for corals and other sea creatures. Due to the presence of the underwater sculptures,
some species not seen in a long while such as groupers and lobsters have rejoined the waters. The
sculpture park represents both an artistic expression and a defence against destructive seafloor trawling.
Presently, 39 massive stone sculptures are scattered across the seabed along an area of Tuscan
coastline near the town of Talamone. In the near future, Antonio Verdi hopes to extend his protective
efforts in coastal waters. “The sea is still under threat,” he says, “and my mission to protect it
continues.”
28.What does the underlined word “barren” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Unproductive. B.Delicate. C.Fruitful. D.Nutritious.
29.How does Antonio Verdi’s fishing differ from that of the illegal “bottom trawlers”?
A.He uses larger nets to catch more fish.
B.His method is less damaging to the ecosystem.
C.He focuses on catching specific high-value fish.
D.His fishing involves the use of underwater sculptures.
30.What impact has the sculpture park had on the local ocean life?
A.A shift in the types of fish caught by local fishermen.
B.A decrease in the number of fish due to the sculptures.
C.The return of species that had previously disappeared from the area.
D.The extinction of some species due to the increased human presence.
31.What is the relationship between human activities and the ocean environment according to this
article?
A.The ocean is too vast to be affected by human activities.
B.Human activities have no significant impact on sea creatures.
C.The only way to protect sea creatures is to prohibit human activities.
D.Fishing should be in line with efforts to maintain a healthy ocean ecosystem.

Solar cells play an important role in the shift towards a greener future, with an increasing number
of buildings and rooftops worldwide being fitted with solar panels. However, their large size can be a
limitation. A team of researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT) has developed a
technique to produce incredibly lightweight solar cells that can be placed on a variety of surfaces.
These solar cells are made from nanomaterials using a kind of electronic ink. Their thinness allows
them to be applied to many different surfaces, such as being placed on the wings of drones(无人机) to
prolong their battery life. These cells are thinner than human hair, yet they are capable of producing
approximately 18 times more power per kilogram compared to traditional solar panels.
A problem that researchers are addressing before these solar cells can be mass-produced is how to
protect the solar cells from oxygen and moisture(湿气). While traditional solar cells are protected by
glass, adding such a layer would remove the major advantage of the new ultra-thin solar cells. Scientists
are currently exploring alternative protective measures.
Australia is also witnessing notable progress in this field. During the “Charge Around Australia”
project, scientists drove around the country in a Tesla that was powered only by solar panels on a
three-month journey. These solar panels were stored in the vehicle’s trunk and provided power if
necessary.
32.What is the main advantage of the new solar cells developed by MIT scientists?
A.They are diverse in form.
B.They are more affordable to produce.
C.They are protected by a layer of glass.
D.They are flexible and generate more power.
33.What challenge do scientists face before these solar cells can be mass-produced?
A.To extend the battery life.
B.To make them absorb more energy.
C.To guard them against oxygen and moisture.
D.To get rid of size and geographical limitation.
34.What most probably makes glass improper as a protective layer?
A.Its cost. B.Its weight.
C.Its structure. D.Its breakability.
35.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Solar panels have been widely used in vehicles around the world.
B.Australia relied on a network of charging stations in the project.
C.Significant innovation was made in solar technology in Australia.
D.The Tesla was charged using traditional power outlets in the project.

Valleys are one of the most common landforms on the Earth. They are formed through erosion(侵
蚀) or the gradual wearing down of the land by wind and water. Their form depends on what is eroding
it, the slope(坡度) of the land, the type of rock or soil and the amount of time the land has been eroded.
There are three common types of valleys: V-shaped valleys, U-shaped valleys and flat floored valleys.
36
A V-shaped valley, sometimes called a river valley, is a narrow valley with steeply(陡峭地) sloped
sides that appear similar to the letter “V”. They are formed by strong streams, which over time have cut
down into the rock. These valleys form with streams in their “youthful” stage. 37 An example of
a V-shaped valley is the Grand Canyon in the Southwestern United States.
A U-shaped valley is a valley with a profile(轮廓 ) similar to the letter “U”. 38 They
are formed by glacial(冰川的) erosion during the last glaciation. This is because ice sheets flowed
down the pre-existing river or V-shaped valleys and caused the bottom of the “V” to level out into a “U”
shape, resulting in a wider, deeper valley.
The third type of the valley is called a flat-floored valley. These valleys, like V-shaped valleys, are
formed by streams. 39 Over time, the stream continues to erode the valley’s soil, widening it
further. With flood, the material that is eroded and carried in the stream is deposited which builds up the
floodplain and the valley. During this process, the shape of the valley changes from a V or U shaped
valley into one with a broad flat valley floor.
40 They are close to rivers which enable easier movement and also provide resources like
water, good soils and food such as fish. The valleys themselves were also helpful as valley walls often
blocked winds and other severe weather if the settlement patterns were positioned correctly. Valleys also
provided a safe place for settlement and made invasions difficult.
A.A valley is normally occupied by a river or stream.
B.During this period, streams flow rapidly down steep slopes.
C.The river begins to erode the bank of its channel instead of valley walls.
D.The shape of valleys varies but they are typically steep-sided canyons or broad plains.
E.This type of valley is characterized by steep sides that curve in at the base of the valley wall.
F.The difference is that they are no longer in their youthful stage, and are instead in a mature stage.
G.Valleys have played an important role in people’s life since the beginning of human development.

investigating it.
From amazement to 60 (accept), Dunlop embarks on this food journey by learning to cook
and trying different Chinese foods including sea cucumber and scorpion(蝎子), despite her usual dietary
preferences.
This 61 (remark) book provides an exciting journey changing from simple descriptions of
Sichuan pepper to serious discussions on topics like animal cruelty related to expensive food such as
shark’s fin. Readers are also encouraged 62 (appreciate) other aspects of life beyond food from

Dunlop’s passion for Chinese cuisine is clear throughout her writing. She shows how westerners
can set aside biases(偏见) and accept Chinese culture. This duality(双重性) 64 (reflect) in the
book’s title: Sichuan pepper stands for everyday energy, while shark’s fin represents high-end luxury.

New Beginnings
My sister and I weren’t exactly what you would call close. I was three years younger, and I thought
she walked on water. Everything she did was perfect, and I wanted to be just like her when I grew up. If
she wore her hair in twin braids(辫子) with a pink clip one day, the next day I wore mine exactly the
same way. I used to follow her and her friends around, begging to be included, but there isn’t much
room in a 13-year-old’s life for a troublesome 10-year-old sister. As a result, over time, my worship(崇
拜) of her became indifference. We were strangers living in the same house, eating together but never
communicating.
Dear Chris,
Yours,
Li Hua
So when she sat me down one day last year and told me she’d be going to Israel to study abroad for
ten months, I wasn’t too concerned. I figured I would get to wear the clothes she left behind and use her
CD player. That was the only way I thought her leaving would affect me.
That first night after she left, I sat in my room and tried to do homework. I couldn’t shake the
feeling that something was wrong, something was missing. The house was too quiet. No Tova’s CD
player and no Tova’s voice giggling on the phone with her friends. Sitting there, I realized just how
different it was without her in the house. Even though we didn’t speak, I had felt safe just knowing she
was near.
I cried that night. I cried over all the years we had wasted trying to live our own lives and ignoring
each other’s. I cried that I couldn’t even give her a hug before she boarded her plane. But as the night
wore on, my tears changed to tears of calm, tears of new beginnings.
I picked up the phone and called her halfway across the world. I waited for her to pick up, my
doubts growing with every second.
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150个左右;
“Hello?” Her voice sounded as though it came from nearby and not Israel.
Since then, we often called each other.

I drove through our neighborhood with my husband, the place we’d called home for 26 years. The Sierra Nevada foothills, once thick with towering pines, were unrecognizable. The ground was covered with a thick blanket of ash.
We’d gotten an early-morning call telling us to move out immediately two weeks earlier. The wildfire tearing through Northern California had spread and was heading our way. We jumped in the car with our dogs and a few belongings. For days, we bounced from hotel to hotel, desperate for news. What finally came wasn’t good. Our house had been right in the fire’s path. Now we’d been given permission to return. My husband and I brought shovels(铁铲), work boots, masks and gloves. We would “rescue” anything we could.
We drove slowly through the ruins, where chimneys marked the spots where homes once stood. I wasn’t prepared for what awaited us. Our house was nothing but rubble(碎石). Most of our belongings, including my precious collection of inspirational books, were all gone.
I wiped away tears as we dug through the ash. We uncovered a cast-iron umbrella stand that used to stand beside our door, and a decorative dish our son had given me, blackened but whole, which reminded us of bits and pieces of our life. How will we survive this? It felt as if our lives had been wiped out.
We stopped digging in late afternoon. My husband loaded what we’d found in the car and said, “Let’s go.” I turned to get in the car. That was when I noticed something stuck to my boot. A piece of paper. I picked it up. Its edges were burnt, but the words were surprisingly clear, “ If life seems difficult, I pause and reflect on the blessing sometimes hidden within every circumstance. With renewed faith and courage, I begin again.”
The words must have come from one of my books, a passage I couldn’t recall but now said everything I needed to hear. I framed that piece of paper and kept it on the nightstand in every hotel and motel we stayed in over the following months. It now sits in a place of honor in our new home, a reminder that we can begin again.
D.A wildfire in North California.

Nestled in the waters off the coast of Tuscany, Italy, an unusual seafloor sculpture park is safeguarding its ocean environment.
Fisherman Antonio Verdi has been casting his nets in these waters since his youth along the Maremma coastline. It was in the 1980s that he began to notice the clear signs: the seabed was becoming barren, with exhausted fish stocks. Until recently, Antonio Verdi has found himself not only competing with the decline of ocean resources but also with threatening practices of illegal “bottom trawlers(拖网捕鱼的人)”, who randomly spoil a large quantity of ocean life as they fish, dragging a weighted net along the seafloor behind their boats.
Antonio Verdi’s style of artisanal fishing(手工捕鱼), in contrast, is friendly to nature as damaging the ecosystem could reduce fishermen’s income. He understood that the success of his fishing activity was linked to the good state of the environment. The underwater “House of Fish” sculpture park, which was started in 2015, was encouraged by this fisherman. “One of the most effective solutions is to physically prevent trawling through artificial reefs, so I started working on this project, trying to combine the protection of the seabed with something that could also give an added value to our environment, something as beautiful as a sculpture,”he stated.
Sculptures or rocks can break weighted trawler nets. They can also function as artificial reefs, offering habitats for corals and other sea creatures. Due to the presence of the underwater sculptures, some species not seen in a long while such as groupers and lobsters have rejoined the waters. The sculpture park represents both an artistic expression and a defence against destructive seafloor trawling.
Presently, 39 massive stone sculptures are scattered across the seabed along an area of Tuscan coastline near the town of Talamone. In the near future, Antonio Verdi hopes to extend his protective efforts in coastal waters. “The sea is still under threat,” he says, “and my mission to protect it continues.”
31.What is the relationship between human activities and the ocean environment according to this article?
A.The ocean is too vast to be affected by human activities.
B.Human activities have no significant impact on sea creatures.
C.The only way to protect sea creatures is to prohibit human activities.
D.Fishing should be in line with efforts to maintain a healthy ocean ecosystem.

Solar cells play an important role in the shift towards a greener future, with an increasing number of buildings and rooftops worldwide being fitted with solar panels. However, their large size can be a limitation. A team of researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT) has developed a technique to produce incredibly lightweight solar cells that can be placed on a variety of surfaces.
These solar cells are made from nanomaterials using a kind of electronic ink. Their thinness allows them to be applied to many different surfaces, such as being placed on the wings of drones(无人机) to prolong their battery life. These cells are thinner than human hair, yet they are capable of producing approximately 18 times more power per kilogram compared to traditional solar panels.
A problem that researchers are addressing before these solar cells can be mass-produced is how to protect the solar cells from oxygen and moisture(湿气). While traditional solar cells are protected by glass, adding such a layer would remove the major advantage of the new ultra-thin solar cells. Scientists are currently exploring alternative protective measures.
Australia is also witnessing notable progress in this field. During the “Charge Around Australia” project, scientists drove around the country in a Tesla that was powered only by solar panels on a three-month journey. These solar panels were stored in the vehicle’s trunk and provided power if necessary.

They are formed through erosion(侵蚀) or the gradual wearing down of the land by wind and water. Their form depends on what is eroding it, the slope(坡度) of the land, the type of rock or soil and the amount of time the land has been eroded. There are three common types of valleys: V-shaped valleys, U-shaped valleys and flat floored valleys.
36
A V-shaped valley, sometimes called a river valley, is a narrow valley with steeply(陡峭地) sloped sides that appear similar to the letter “V”. They are formed by strong streams, which over time have cut down into the rock. These valleys form with streams in their “youthful” stage. 37 An example of a V-shaped valley is the Grand Canyon in the Southwestern United States.
A U-shaped valley is a valley with a profile(轮廓) similar to the letter “U”. 38 They are formed by glacial(冰川的) erosion during the last glaciation. This is because ice sheets flowed down the pre-existing river or V-shaped valleys and caused the bottom of the “V” to level out into a “U” shape, resulting in a wider, deeper valley.
The third type of the valley is called a flat-floored valley. These valleys, like V-shaped valleys, are formed by streams. 39 Over time, the stream continues to erode the valley’s soil, widening it further. With flood, the material that is eroded and carried in the stream is deposited which builds up the floodplain and the valley. During this process, the shape of the valley changes from a V or U shaped valley into one with a broad flat valley floor.
40 They are close to rivers which enable easier movement and also provide resources like water, good soils and food such as fish. The valleys themselves were also helpful as valley walls often blocked winds and other severe weather if the settlement patterns were positioned correctly. Valleys also provided a safe place for settlement and made invasions difficult.

Shark’s Fin and Sichuan Pepper (《鱼翅与花椒》) is a book on Chinese cuisine by British writer Fuchsia Dunlop, 56 has spent about 15 years exploring China and its diverse food culture. The book 57 (consist) of 16 chapters, each featuring a practical recipe. Dunlop explores Chinese food from the remote Gansu countryside 58 the historic city of Yangzhou. Rather than
59 (mere) presenting the food, she immerses herself in tasting it and, more importantly, investigating it.
From amazement to 60 (accept), Dunlop embarks on this food journey by learning to cook and trying different Chinese foods including sea cucumber and scorpion(蝎子), despite her usual dietary preferences.
This 61 (remark) book provides an exciting journey changing from simple descriptions of Sichuan pepper to serious discussions on topics like animal cruelty related to expensive food such as shark’s fin. Readers are also encouraged 62 (appreciate) other aspects of life beyond food from the perspective of 63 outsider.
Dunlop’s passion for Chinese cuisine is clear throughout her writing. She shows how westerners can set aside biases(偏见) and accept Chinese culture. This duality(双重性) 64 (reflect) in the book’s title: Sichuan pepper stands for everyday energy, while shark’s fin represents high-end luxury. This mix of daily life and a taste for luxury enriches Chinese cuisine, 65 (leave) a lasting impression on readers.

New Beginnings
My sister and I weren’t exactly what you would call close. I was three years younger, and I thought she walked on water. Everything she did was perfect, and I wanted to be just like her when I grew up. If she wore her hair in twin braids(辫子) with a pink clip one day, the next day I wore mine exactly the same way. I used to follow her and her friends around, begging to be included, but there isn’t much room in a 13-year-old’s life for a troublesome 10-year-old sister. As a result, over time, my worship(崇拜) of her became indifference. We were strangers living in the same house, eating together but never communicating.
So when she sat me down one day last year and told me she’d be going to Israel to study abroad for ten months, I wasn’t too concerned. I figured I would get to wear the clothes she left behind and use her CD player. That was the only way I thought her leaving would affect me.
That first night after she left, I sat in my room and tried to do homework. I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong, something was missing. The house was too quiet. No Tova’s CD player and no Tova’s voice giggling on the phone with her friends. Sitting there, I realized just how different it was without her in the house. Even though we didn’t speak, I had felt safe just knowing she was near.
I cried that night. I cried over all the years we had wasted trying to live our own lives and ignoring each other’s. I cried that I couldn’t even give her a hug before she boarded her plane. But as the night wore on, my tears changed to tears of calm, tears of new beginnings.
I picked up the phone and called her halfway across the world. I waited for her to pick up, my doubts growing with every second.
