It was a dark and stormy night. It was New Year’s Eve. We were having our party and had a house full of people just starting to celebrate.
Suddenly, we heard loud explosions (爆炸声). Looking outside and up into the hills, we saw sparks (火花) flying from electrical transformers (变压器). Then our house went dark. I tried to find every candle we had and lit them. The candles made everything look lovely. But we had problems. We had fifteen people standing around and we still had to cook dinner. How would we do that without electricity?
The barbecue! Why not cook on the barbecue? We boys and men went outside, some holding flashlights and others cooking. We did a wonderful job. The girls and women stayed inside and got the salads ready. Everything was delicious. There were still a few hours to go before the begınning of the new year, so we all sat around the dining room table and sang up until a few minutes before midnight. We couldn’t watch the ball drop in Times Square on television but that wouldn’t stop us from celebrating. I stood on a chair and, with the help of someone’s watch to tell us the time, we all counted down and I dropped a tennis ball! We all screamed Happy New Year. We didn’t need electricity for that!
Nowadays, we still get together with the same group to celebrate the New Year and we still talk about that special night. I don’t think we have ever laughed so much as we did on that New Year’s Eve.

Jordyn Perez was about to turn 8 years old when her mom suggested a new way to celebrate her birthday. “How about giving away your gifts to a children’s hospital?” her mom said.
Jordyn thought about the idea. She already had everything she needed, and these kids in hospital were going through some difficulties. They probably needed gifts more than she did. “Okay, that sounds cool,” she finally said.
Now a student in high school, Jordyn continues to bring joy to kids with serious illnesses. This year, she has made her eighth yearly birthday-gift donation (捐赠) to Baptist Children’s Hospital in San Antonio.
Kids can be in the hospital for lots of reasons. In the US, asthma (哮喘) is a top reason for younger children. Whatever the patient’s age or illness, a hospital stay can be stressful. Efforts like Jordyn’s are sunshine during a difficult time.
Jordyn’s gift-giving project begins each year in November. When she sends her friends invitations to her birthday party, she includes a list of gift ideas for kids at the hospital. For the youngest patients, gifts might include building blocks or toy trains. “And for the teenagers,” Jordyn says, “it might be nail polish or books.”
Natalie Gutierrez, a worker at Baptist Children’s Hospital, has seen the influence of Jordyn’s gift-giving. “She puts smiles on the faces of these young patients in our hospital and on our nurses,” Gutierrez says. “They are all amazed at her beneficence at such a young age.”
Jordyn’s efforts to help kids in the hospital have influenced others a lot. Friends have given away gifts for their birthdays too. And Jordyn says her 11-year-old twin sisters help animals at the Humane Society.
“Giving to others, it’s just a good feeling to have at the end of the day,” Jordyn says. “I want to keep doing this as long as I can.”
23.Which paragraph tells us the meaning of Jordyn’s action?
A.Paragraph 1. B.Paragraph 2. C.Paragraph 3. D.Paragraph 4.

If you are looking for somewhere special to visit in London, we may have the answer for you: Sir John Soane’s Museum. The museum is one of London’s best-kept secrets, and it’s well worth a visit. Sir John, a great architect (建筑师), lived in London during the 18th century (1753—1837), and the amazing thing is that his house is exactly the same as he left it. In fact, visiting the house is just like stepping back in time.
There are three floors which are open to the public. You can start on the first floor. This was Sir John’s work area. You can ask the guards about the paintings on the walls as they tell you something about this family and life. And don’t worry about the guards as they are really nice and helpful. Next, you can go downstairs to the ground floor. Here you can see his rich collection of paintings. For example, there is a series (系列) of interesting paintings about 18th century life in London. Now comes the last part, the underground floor. It’s full of thousands of valuable objects, such as sculptures (雕塑) and models of famous buildings from all over the world. Walking around this part of the house is a bit like being on a treasure hunt, as you can find things hidden away in secret corners. Anyway, you’ll have to go there yourself to see.
Sir John Soane’s Museum is a very small place. It’s only about ten minutes’ walk from the British Museum. There is a free hour-long guided tour every Saturday at 2:30 pm, but the best thing is just to walk about by yourself. So now you know where to go next time you’re in London. We guarantee that it’s an experience you won’t forget!

根据“for 6...”
介词as后接人称代词I的宾格me作宾语。故填me。
故填to reach。
故填are organized。
故填made。
根据“put up posters around our school”可知此处表示并列关系,应用and连接。故填and。
play a role in“在……方面发挥作用”。故填in。
故填a。

Living skills are very important in our daily life. The process of learning it is also meaningful to us. I learned how to cook meals last summer holiday. I thought it was easy as my mother did it quickly and perfectly. Then I decided to have a try so I could do something nice for my parents and take care of myself. I bought the food I needed in the market and then I washed and cut it to get ready. Then my mother taught me how to do it right. I tried several times in the kitchen and finally made it. I felt proud of myself. After that, I have realized that my parents do so much for me all the time. More importantly, I found cooking was not an easy thing.
We should learn more living skills to make our life better and look after both ourselves and others.
