National Parks are the best places to see raw nature in protected areas, where the wildlife is free and
the history is kept alive properly, such is the case of all national parks in Australia.
The Booderee National Park
It offers a protected habitat (栖息地) for native wildlife against high cliffs and white beaches. While
summer is good for visiting due to the excellent weather, a special event takes place in June and July
when whales come back with their babies. Educational tours are fit for school groups to get close to
nature. There are a range of activities such as camping, diving and nature walks.
The Norfolk Island National Park
The history of the Park is eye-catching, so you might want to check out how Captain James Cook
got here and why. You can picnic and have a nice barbecue around the highest point on the island, Mount
Bates. Another tourist attraction is Phillip Island, six kilometers away from Norfolk, home to many
seabirds.
The Uluru National Park
If you’re into learning more about Aboriginals (土著居民) and their influence on the world, you
mustn’t miss it, where Tjukurpa stories come from about native songs and dances. The rocks here are
extremely loved because they seem to change color during sunrise and sunset. So the spot is also great
for walking, considering the knowledge and stories on the rocks’ shapes and purpose for humans.
The Kakadu National Park
It has the longest historical records of Aboriginal people living there, which have been carved in the
rock art made by Indigenous civilizations over the years. The Park has remarkable rivers and floodplains
that go through the rich ecosystem. With more than 280 species of birds, 117 reptile species and 74
mammals, the park is a joy to the eye of the traveler.
21. What makes the Booderee National Park special?
A. Whales’ return. B. Nature walks. C. Wildlife habitat. D. Educational tours.
22. Where can you learn about Captain James Cook?
A. The Uluru National Park. B. The Kakadu National Park.
C. The Booderee National Park. D. The Norfolk Island National Park.
23. What do the Uluru National Park and the Kakadu National Park have in common?
A. Rock colors. B. Rock shapes. C. Native culture. D. Rich wildlife.

Anantawan was born without most of his right forearm. The disability was a barrier to music when,
in fifth grade, he said his music teacher wanted all the students to learn to play the recorder (竖笛).
Instead of giving up, Anantawan and his parents decided to find him a different instrument to
explore his musical talent. “My family chose the violin because they thought it was the most beautiful
instrument,” Anantawan said. They contacted the Toronto-area hospital near the family, asking them to
create an adaptive cast (铸模) on his arm that would allow the then 10-year-old to hold the bow (琴弓).
A group of engineers worked alongside Anantawan to build a special device. With it, Anantawan
could use the bow and use his shoulder to make the sound. “From the very first note that I was playing, I
was really attracted to the sound and the connection of my body to the instrument and being able to
express my imagination,” he said.
Although Anantawan is grateful for the technology that allows him and others with disabilities to
find access to music, he said the most important part of access is that teachers, supporters and those who
encourage young learners or musicians by telling them they can do anything are able to accept diversity.
Anantawan is working to provide that space for others. As an associate professor at the Berklee
College of Music, Anantawan founded the Music Inclusion Ensemble, a group of students with
disabilities that provides accommodations for musicians according to their needs. Anantawan hopes to
inspire people without being defined only by the challenges they face as a result of their disability.
24.Why did Anantawan’s family get in touch with the hospital?
A. To find a man-made hand for him. B. To inspire him to learn to play the recorder.
C. To add something extra to assist his right arm. D. To put forward suggestions on adapting a violin.
25.What does Anantawan think is the key to the disabled’s access to music?
A. Inclusive atmosphere. B. Fair competitions.
C. Enough resources. D. Lasting cooperation.
26.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.Why Anantawan becomes active. B.Who Anantawan plays music with.
C. HowAnantawan lives in his free time. D.What Anantawan contributes his time to.
27.Which of the following can best describe Anantawan?
A. Appreciative and kind. B. Open-minded and sporty.
C.Wealthy and humorous. D. Hesitant and lonely.

Drone (无人机) light shows are becoming especially popular in the West. By now, if you live on the
U. S. East or West Coasts, you’ve probably been troubled by wildfire smoke. The fires are increasing in
frequency and intensity as climate change worsens. And fireworks, as you can guess from their name,
cause fires — more than you might think.
That’s what caused a handful of California towns to quit fireworks and turn to drones last year.
Sydney, Australia, known for its massive fireworks display, is considering doing the same due to the risk
of wildfires. And fire danger is now top of mind for many U. S. cities as the Independence Day, or the
American national day, nears.
In addition to reducing the risk of fires, drone light shows present a safer alternative for the folks
behind the curtain. Fireworks injured more than 10,000 people last year because they can accidentally
erupt while on the ground. Drones won’t. And since light shows are required to keep the ground below
the show clear, there’s no risk of a drone falling from the sky into the crowd.
Drones are also less disturbing, creating only a light buzzing noise. Fireworks, on the other hand,
can burst your eardrum if you’re standing close enough. That’s a nuisance for some families with animals,
small children, or other people who are sensitive to noise.
But perhaps the biggest reason for the switch to drones is that they’re thought to be greener. Besides
starting fires, firework smoke leaves behind a trail of harmful chemicals and is considered a pollutant.
Drones are also a reusable option, capable of flying potentially hundreds of shows before they even
require maintenance. That’s a huge benefit to the environment — and to the companies paying to put on
these performances.
At the end of the day, though, some cities are likely switching to drones simply because they’re
cooler. That’s not to say that fireworks aren’t cool. But drones allow for more creativity, with the ability
to synchronize (同步) lights to music and recreate complex images in the sky.
Nevertheless, it’s still too early to rush to the conclusion that drones will completely take the place
of fireworks in the near future.
28.Why are fireworks given up in some towns?
A. They are too expensive. B. They bring along fire risks.
C. They speed up climate change. D. They are not cool any more.
29. How does the author develop paragraph 3?
A. By making a comparison. B. By analyzing causes and effects.
C. By giving a definition. D. By referring to data from previous studies.
30What does the underlined word “nuisance” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Reward. B. Attraction. C. Instance. D. Annoyance.
31.What will the author probably continue to talk about?
A. The potential challenges drones will face.
B. The similarities shared by drones and fireworks.
C. The importance of drones in promoting economy.
D. The strong competition from companies in different industries.

Sometimes to go forward you must look backwards. Wind-powered ships have been used since
ancient times, ever since the invention of the sail (帆). With the coming of fuel-powered ships, however,
the sail fell out of favor as a practical way to move large boats and ships across the ocean. Now, sails are
making a comeback as a way to lower the carbon emissions (碳排放 ) produced by the fuel-powered
shipping industry.
Shipping is not an environmentally friendly industry. In fact, the industry is responsible for about
three percent of global emissions. Luckily, the leading figures in the industry have made a commitment
to become planet-warming gases net zero by 2050. This is where the Pyxis Ocean comes in.
The Pyxis Ocean is a ship with two “WindWings”, which was designed by a British company. The
ship made its first journey crossing the ocean from China to Brazil in 2023.
But the “WindWings” are not quite sails. Standing up to 37 meters tall, they are designed using the
same type of aerodynamic (空气动力学的) principles that make it possible for an aircraft to fly. When
not being used, the sails fold down onto the ship’s deck. It is estimated that the wings will save around 3
tons of fuel a day. That is a lot of fuel.
With new, cleaner fuels still in the works, these partial measures to reduce carbon emissions are a
godsend. “Ultimately we do need zero-carbon fuels on all ships, but in the meantime, it is necessary to
make every journey as efficient as possible,” Dr Simon Bullock, a shipping researcher, said.
Luckily, wind-powered technology is gaining recognition. About 100 out of every110,000
new-build ships are being built using some sort of wind technology. And that doesn’t take into account
ships like the Pyxis Ocean which have been, or will be transformed with sails, kites, or other types of
wind-powered mechanisms.
32.What does the comeback of the wind-powered technology show?
A. The whole world is faced with an energy crisis.
B. Sustainable development has become a global trend.
C. The solutions to modern problems may lie in the past.
D. The shipping industry is determined to turn away from fuels.
33.What is the main purpose of the “WindWings” on the Pyxis Ocean?
A. To reduce the ship’s carbon emissions. B. To provide entertainment for the sailors.
C. To serve as a backup power source. D. To increase the speed of the ship.
34.What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A.Wind power is playing a major role in the shipping industry.
B. The wind-powered technology is reliable and promising.
C. Fuel-powered ships will soon be replaced by wind-powered ones.
D. Technology innovation is key to addressing environmental issues.
35.What can be the best title for the text?
A. New Ship Sailing into the Future
B. Traditional Shipping Taking the Stage
C. The Pyxis Ocean: New Hope for the Earth
D. “WindWings”: a Return to Ancient Shipping Wisdom

With one and half years of senior school to go, you’re probably experiencing a mix of emotions:
excitement about what the future holds, and maybe anxiety about how to handle the coming exams.
Don’t worry! Here are a few things that will help you get through the rest of your senior school.
36 This means setting up a system that works for you to keep track of important dates,
assignments, and deadlines. This can be as simple as using a planner. In this way, you can stay on top of
your work and avoid any last- minute hurry.
Manage your time wisely. Learn to balance your academic tasks with extracurricular and
social activities. 37 For example, you might dedicate Mondays to Thursdays to homework,
Fridays to extracurricular activities, and Saturdays to sports and hanging out with friends. Whatever
system you choose, just ensure it works for you and helps you stay on track.
Keep your grades up. Letting your grades slip during the senior year can be easy. To avoid this,
create a study schedule that allows you to focus on one subject at a time. Meanwhile, do ask for help
from your teachers and parents if you’re struggling with a particular concept. 38
Set goals, not time limits. Most people set time limits on their goals, such as “I’ll finish reviewing
this book by Friday!” or something like that. 39 So just focus on the goal, not the timeframe.
For example, rather than saying you’ll finish reviewing one book by Friday, focus on what you need to
do to make that happen.
Embrace your passions and start exploring potential careers. Think about what subjects you
enjoy most and what courses you’re passionate about. From there, research potential careers that
are in line with your interests. 40 The more you know about a particular career, the better
equipped you’ll be to decide your future.
A. Give back.
B. Get organized.
C. Step outside your comfort zone and try new things.
D. They are there to support you and want you to succeed.
E. It’s a good idea to set specific days or hours for each task.
F. And reach out to people in those fields for advice and guidance.
G. Putting pressure on yourself to meet these deadlines can be stressful.

The Araguaia River is one of the biggest rivers in Brazil. It is home to thousands of animals,
including bright blue and yellow macaws(金刚鹦鹉). River dolphins swim and play in the water, and
there are many different colored fish.
In one town, a 13-year-old boy named Rhenan would walk along the river every day. But looking at
the river made him worry because there was rubbish everywhere. He saw plastic bottles, old clothing,
and empty food packages. The water looked dark and ugly.
At school, Rhenan asked about the dirty river. “You wouldn’t want trash in your house,” said his
teacher. “Think about the poor animals!” For days, Rhenan couldn’t stop thinking about the river. It
didn’t seem right to him that this big, powerful river was filled with trash. “It’s hurting the animals in my
area,” he thought. “And it’s also hurting the families who live here.”
Then Rhenan had an idea. The next morning, Rhenan talked to his mother about his plan for the
river. He wanted to go around his town and ask for everyone’s help. Maybe if they all worked together,
they could clean up the river! Rhenan’s mother loved his idea. “I believe the most important thing for
you, Rhenan, is learning how to change things that you care about. That will stay with you forever,” she
told him. She told him she would help him all along the way.
The next day, Rhenan went to the police department. Then he went to the Mayor’s office. He visited
other schools, offices, and businesses. Soon he had a very big group of people who liked his idea!

This summer I joined a two-week summer camp in China. The camp was for language
learning. The other campers and I learned Chinese through activities like storytelling and
role-playing. In the first week, to use the vocabulary we'd learned in real-world situations, we were
encouraged to buy vegetables at the market and book entry tickets to the museum.During the
second week, the activities were richer. We attended classes in traditional Chinese art in the first
three days, such as fan painting, paper cutting and Chinese calligraphy. It was so cool to drive out
the summer heat with a fan(扇子) painted by myself. Then the following day we went to eat traditional
food there. We also spent two days visiting some places of interest, learning about the local history
of the area.In the last day of our camp,we had a sharing session, during which we were asked to
describe the part we like best of our camp.It was a hard choice. For me,every activity was fun
—Chinese culture, the food and people all impressed me deeply. I hope to come again in the future.

(Text 10)
应用文Dear Chris,
Learning that you have passed the HSK-Test, I’m writing to express my congratulations to you.
I know you were not good at Chinese at first. However, you practiced listening, speaking, reading and writing Chinese every day and succeeded in passing the test eventually, which is very difficult for foreign students in my mind. Therefore, I’m more than glad because your hard work paid off ultimately(最终) . I think if you go on studying Chinese harder, you will have the opportunity to further study in China. Then we can communicate with each other face to face. Looking forward to meeting you in China.
Over an entire day, they all worked together to clean up the rubbish. Rhenan and his group of volunteers filled up many bags with plastic bottles, old clothing, and empty food packages from the river. They walked along the riverbank and the surrounding area, picking up all kinds of litter. More people from all walks of life, young or old, joined them to make a positive change in their community. Hard as the work was, they were all happy to help. Looking at the clean river, they felt a sense of pride.
Looking at the clean river, Rhenan decided to stop this problem from happening again. He came up with the idea of raising the awareness of the importance of protecting the environment by making posters(海报) and flyers(传单) with pictures of the clean river and the animals that lived in it. It was with the students who he first held discussions about how it could help to keep the river clean and also benefit the community(社区) . What’s more, he suggested that the Mayor(市长) and other officials set up recycling programs to make it easier for people to dispose of (处理) their waste properly. Rhenan’s dedication (奉献) showed that one person can make a huge difference.

根据文章第四段“Although Anantawan is grateful for the technology that allows him and others with disabilities to find access to music, he said the most important part of access is that teachers, supporters and those who encourage young learners or musicians by telling them they can do anything are able to accept diversity.(虽然Anantawan很感谢科技让他和其他残障人士能够接触到音乐,但他说,接触音乐最重要的部分是,老师、支持者和那些鼓励年轻学习者或音乐家,告诉他们可以做任何事的人,能够接受多样性)”可知,Anantawan认为包容性的氛围是让残疾人接触音乐的关键。故选A。
根据文章最后一段“Anantawan is working to provide that space for others. As an associate professor at the Berklee College of Music, Anantawan founded the Music Inclusion Ensemble, a group of students with disabilities that provides accommodations for musicians according to their needs.(Anantawan正在努力为其他人提供这样的空间。作为伯克利音乐学院的副教授,Anantawan创立了“音乐包容合奏团”,这是一个由残疾学生组成的团体,根据音乐家的需要为他们提供便利)”可知,最后一段主要是关于Anantawan如何通过自己的努力,利用他的时间和优势来帮助和激励其他残疾人融入音乐世界。故选D。

C篇【答案】28. B 29. A 30. D 31. A
根据第一段中“And fireworks, as you can guess from their name, cause fires — more than you might think.(烟花,正如你从它的名字可以猜到的那样,会引起火灾——比你想象的要多)”和第二段中“That’s what caused a handful of California towns to quit fireworks and turn to drones last year. Sydney, Australia, known for its massive fireworks display, is considering doing the same due to the risk of wildfires.(这就是去年加州一些城镇放弃烟花转向无人机的原因。澳大利亚的悉尼以其大规模的烟花表演而闻名,由于野火的风险,正在考虑也这样做)”可知,一些城镇放弃烟花是因为它们会带来火灾风险。故选B项。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段内容,尤其是“In addition to reducing the risk of fires, drone light shows present a safer alternative for the folks behind the curtain. Fireworks injured more than 10,000 people last year because they can accidentally erupt while on the ground. Drones won’t.(除了降低火灾风险外,无人机灯光秀还为幕后人员提供了一个更安全的替代方案。去年,烟花造成10000多人受伤,因为它们可能会在地面上意外爆炸。无人机则不会)”可知,本段通过对比烟花和无人机灯光秀在安全性方面的差异,来说明无人机灯光秀的优势。由此推知,作者是通过对比的方式来展开第三段的。故选A项。
根据画线词上文“Fireworks, on the other hand, can burst your eardrum if you’re standing close enough.(另一方面,如果你站得足够近,烟花可能会震破你的耳膜)”以及后文“for some families with animals, small children, or other people who are sensitive to noise(对于一些有动物、小孩或对噪音敏感的人来说)”可知,烟花的噪音对于一些人来说是令人烦恼的。
根据最后一段“Nevertheless, it’s still too early to rush to the conclusion that drones will completely take the place of fireworks in the near future.(然而,现在就急于得出无人机将在不久的将来完全取代烟花的结论还为时过早)”可知,作者认为现在还不能得出无人机将完全取代烟花的结论,由此推知,接下来作者可能会继续谈论无人机面临的挑战。故选A项。
D篇【答案】32. C 33. A 34. B 35. D
根据第一段“Sometimes to go forward you must look backwards. Wind-powered ships have been used since ancient times, ever since the invention of the sail. With the coming of fuel-powered ships, however, the sail fell out of favor as a practical way to move large boats and ships across the ocean. Now, sails are making a comeback as a way to lower the carbon emissions (碳排放) produced by the fuel-powered shipping industry.
根据第四段“It is estimated that the wings will save around 3 tons of fuel a day. That is a lot of fuel. (据估计,这种机翼每天将节省约3吨燃料。这是大量的燃料。)”可知,Pyxis Ocean上的“Wind Wings”的主要作用是减少船只的能源消耗,从而减少碳排放量。故选A。
根据最后一段“Luckily, wind-powered technology is gaining recognition. About 100 out of every110,000 new-build ships are being built using some sort of wind technology. And that doesn’t take into account ships like the Pyxis Ocean which have been, or will be transformed with sails, kites, or other types of wind-powered mechanisms. (幸运的是,风力发电技术正在获得认可。每11万艘新造船中,大约有100艘正在使用某种风能技术建造。这还不包括像皮克西斯海洋号这样的船只,它们已经或将被帆、风筝或其他类型的风力驱动机制改造。)”可知,风帆辅助技术是可靠且很有前途的。故选B。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Sometimes to go forward you must look backwards.
36. 根据后文“This means setting up a system that works for you to keep track of important dates, assignments, and deadlines. This can be as simple as using a planner. In this way, you can stay on top of your work and avoid any last- minute hurry.(这意味着你要建立一个系统来记录重要的日期、任务和截止日期。这就像使用计划表一样简单。这样,你就能掌握你的工作,避免最后一分钟的匆忙)”可知,本段的主旨是强调要有条理,有目标,故B选项“有条理”符合语境。故选B。
37. 根据后文“For example, you might dedicate Mondays to Thursdays to homework, Fridays to extracurricular activities, and Saturdays to sports and hanging out with friends.(例如,你可以在周一到周四做作业,周五做课外活动,周六做运动和和朋友出去玩)”可知,后文的例子表明每天的活动都要有具体的安排,平衡好学习和课外、社交生活,明智的管理时间。
38. 根据上文“Meanwhile, do ask for help from your teachers and parents if you’re struggling with a particular concept.(同时,如果你在某个概念上有困难,一定要向老师和父母寻求帮助)”可知,本句承接上文,说明老师和父母的作用。D选项中的they指的是your teachers and parents,他们一直在那儿支持你并希望你成功。
39. 根据上文“Set goals, not time limits. Most people set time limits on their goals, such as “I’ll finish reviewing this book by Friday!” or something like that.(设定目标,而不是时间限制。大多数人都为自己的目标设定了时间限制,比如“我要在周五之前完成这本书的复习!”诸如此类的话)”以及后文“So just focus on the goal, not the timeframe.(所以只关注目标,而不是时间框架)”可知,本段主旨为段落首句,要设定目标而不是设定时间界限。空格与其后一句构成因果关系,强调给自己施加压力赶上截止日期是有压力的。G选项“在截止日期前给自己施加压力是有压力的”符合语境。故选G。
40. 根据上文“Embrace your passions and start exploring potential careers. Think about what subjects you enjoy most and what courses you’re passionate about. From there, research potential careers that are in line with your interests.(拥抱你的激情,开始探索潜在的职业。想想你最喜欢的科目和你最热衷的课程。在此基础上,研究符合你兴趣的潜在职业)”以及后文“The more you know about a particular career, the better equipped you’ll be to decide your future.(你对某一职业了解得越多,你就越有能力决定自己的未来)”可知,本段主旨为段落首句,拥抱你的激情,开始探索潜在的职业,后文提到了了解某一职业,可知本句与了解职业领域有关,F选项中those fields指的是空格前的potential careers。

National Parks are the best places to see raw nature in protected areas, where the wildlife is free and the history is kept alive properly, such is the case of all national parks in Australia.
The Booderee National Park
It offers a protected habitat (栖息地) for native wildlife against high cliffs and white beaches. While summer is good for visiting due to the excellent weather, a special event takes place in June and July when whales come back with their babies. Educational tours are fit for school groups to get close to nature. There are a range of activities such as camping, diving and nature walks.
The Norfolk Island National Park
The history of the Park is eye-catching, so you might want to check out how Captain James Cook got here and why. You can picnic and have a nice barbecue around the highest point on the island, Mount Bates. Another tourist attraction is Phillip Island, six kilometers away from Norfolk, home to many seabirds.
The Uluru National Park
If you’re into learning more about Aboriginals (土著居民) and their influence on the world, you mustn’t miss it, where Tjukurpa stories come from about native songs and dances. The rocks here are extremely loved because they seem to change color during sunrise and sunset. So the spot is also great for walking, considering the knowledge and stories on the rocks’ shapes and purpose for humans.
The Kakadu National Park
It has the longest historical records of Aboriginal people living there, which have been carved in the rock art made by Indigenous civilizations over the years. The Park has remarkable rivers and floodplains that go through the rich ecosystem. With more than 280 species of birds, 117 reptile species and 74 mammals, the park is a joy to the eye of the traveler.
21. What makes the Booderee National Park special?
A. Whales’ return. B. Nature walks. C. Wildlife habitat. D. Educational tours.
22. Where can you learn about Captain James Cook?

The disability was a barrier to music when, in fifth grade, he said his music teacher wanted all the students to learn to play the recorder (竖笛).
Instead of giving up, Anantawan and his parents decided to find him a different instrument to explore his musical talent. “My family chose the violin because they thought it was the most beautiful instrument,” Anantawan said. They contacted the Toronto-area hospital near the family, asking them to create an adaptive cast (铸模) on his arm that would allow the then 10-year-old to hold the bow (琴弓).
A group of engineers worked alongside Anantawan to build a special device. With it, Anantawan could use the bow and use his shoulder to make the sound. “From the very first note that I was playing, I was really attracted to the sound and the connection of my body to the instrument and being able to express my imagination,” he said.
Although Anantawan is grateful for the technology that allows him and others with disabilities to find access to music, he said the most important part of access is that teachers, supporters and those who encourage young learners or musicians by telling them they can do anything are able to accept diversity.
Anantawan is working to provide that space for others. As an associate professor at the Berklee College of Music, Anantawan founded the Music Inclusion Ensemble, a group of students with disabilities that provides accommodations for musicians according to their needs. Anantawan hopes to inspire people without being defined only by the challenges they face as a result of their disability.
24. Why did Anantawan’s family get in touch with the hospital?
A. To find a man-made hand for him. B. To inspire him to learn to play the recorder.
C. To add something extra to assist his right arm. D. To put forward suggestions on adapting a violin.
25. What does Anantawan think is the key to the disabled’s access to music?
A. Inclusive atmosphere. B. Fair competitions.
C. Enough resources. D. Lasting cooperation.
26. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Why Anantawan becomes active. B. Who Anantawan plays music with.
C. How Anantawan lives in his free time. D. What Anantawan contributes his time to.
27. Which of the following can best describe Anantawan?
A. Appreciative and kind. B. Open-minded and sporty.
C. Wealthy and humorous. D. Hesitant and lonely.
C
Drone (无人机) light shows are becoming especially popular in the West. By now, if you live on the U. S. East or West Coasts, you’ve probably been troubled by wildfire smoke. The fires are increasing in frequency and intensity as climate change worsens. And fireworks, as you can guess from their name, cause fires — more than you might think.
That’s what caused a handful of California towns to quit fireworks and turn to drones last year. Sydney, Australia, known for its massive fireworks display, is considering doing the same due to the risk of wildfires. And fire danger is now top of mind for many U. S. cities as the Independence Day, or the American national day, nears.
In addition to reducing the risk of fires, drone light shows present a safer alternative for the folks behind the curtain. Fireworks injured more than 10,000 people last year because they can accidentally erupt while on the ground. Drones won’t. And since light shows are required to keep the ground below the show clear, there’s no risk of a drone falling from the sky into the crowd.
Drones are also less disturbing, creating only a light buzzing noise. Fireworks, on the other hand, can burst your eardrum if you’re standing close enough. That’s a nuisance for some families with animals, small children, or other people who are sensitive to noise.
But perhaps the biggest reason for the switch to drones is that they’re thought to be greener. Besides starting fires, firework smoke leaves behind a trail of harmful chemicals and is considered a pollutant. Drones are also a reusable option, capable of flying potentially hundreds of shows before they even require maintenance. That’s a huge benefit to the environment — and to the companies paying to put on these performances.
At the end of the day, though, some cities are likely switching to drones simply because they’re cooler. That’s not to say that fireworks aren’t cool. But drones allow for more creativity, with the ability to synchronize (同步) lights to music and recreate complex images in the sky.
Nevertheless, it’s still too early to rush to the conclusion that drones will completely take the place of fireworks in the near future.
28. Why are fireworks given up in some towns?
30 What does the underlined word “nuisance” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Reward. B. Attraction. C. Instance. D. Annoyance.
31. What will the author probably continue to talk about?
A. The potential challenges drones will face.
B. The similarities shared by drones and fireworks.
C. The importance of drones in promoting economy.
D. The strong competition from companies in different industries.

Sometimes to go forward you must look backwards. Wind-powered ships have been used since ancient times, ever since the invention of the sail (帆). With the coming of fuel-powered ships, however, the sail fell out of favor as a practical way to move large boats and ships across the ocean. Now, sails are making a comeback as a way to lower the carbon emissions (碳排放) produced by the fuel-powered shipping industry.
Shipping is not an environmentally friendly industry. In fact, the industry is responsible for about three percent of global emissions. Luckily, the leading figures in the industry have made a commitment to become planet-warming gases net zero by 2050. This is where the Pyxis Ocean comes in.
The Pyxis Ocean is a ship with two “WindWings”, which was designed by a British company. The ship made its first journey crossing the ocean from China to Brazil in 2023.
But the “WindWings” are not quite sails. Standing up to 37 meters tall, they are designed using the same type of aerodynamic (空气动力学的) principles that make it possible for an aircraft to fly. When not being used, the sails fold down onto the ship’s deck. It is estimated that the wings will save around 3 tons of fuel a day. That is a lot of fuel.
With new, cleaner fuels still in the works, these partial measures to reduce carbon emissions are a godsend. “Ultimately we do need zero-carbon fuels on all ships, but in the meantime, it is necessary to make every journey as efficient as possible,” Dr Simon Bullock, a shipping researcher, said.
Luckily, wind-powered technology is gaining recognition. About 100 out of every110,000 new-build ships are being built using some sort of wind technology. And that doesn’t take into account ships like the Pyxis Ocean which have been, or will be transformed with sails, kites, or other types of wind-powered mechanisms.
32. What does the comeback of the wind-powered technology show?
A. The whole world is faced with an energy crisis.
B. Sustainable development has become a global trend.
C. The solutions to modern problems may lie in the past.
D. The shipping industry is determined to turn away from fuels.
33. What is the main purpose of the “WindWings” on the Pyxis Ocean?
A. To reduce the ship’s carbon emissions. B. To provide entertainment for the sailors.
C. To serve as a backup power source. D. To increase the speed of the ship.
34. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. Wind power is playing a major role in the shipping industry.
B. The wind-powered technology is reliable and promising.
C. Fuel-powered ships will soon be replaced by wind-powered ones.
D. Technology innovation is key to addressing environmental issues.
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. New Ship Sailing into the Future
B. Traditional Shipping Taking the Stage
C. The Pyxis Ocean: New Hope for the Earth
D. “WindWings”: a Return to Ancient Shipping Wisdom
With one and half years of senior school to go, you’re probably experiencing a mix of emotions: excitement about what the future holds, and maybe anxiety about how to handle the coming exams. Don’t worry! Here are a few things that will help you get through the rest of your senior school.
36 This means setting up a system that works for you to keep track of important dates, assignments, and deadlines. This can be as simple as using a planner. In this way, you can stay on top of your work and avoid any last- minute hurry.
Manage your time wisely. Learn to balance your academic tasks with extracurricular and social activities. 37 For example, you might dedicate Mondays to Thursdays to homework, Fridays to extracurricular activities, and Saturdays to sports and hanging out with friends. Whatever system you choose, just ensure it works for you and helps you stay on track.
Keep your grades up. Letting your grades slip during the senior year can be easy. To avoid this, create a study schedule that allows you to focus on one subject at a time. Meanwhile, do ask for help from your teachers and parents if you’re struggling with a particular concept. 38
Set goals, not time limits. Most people set time limits on their goals, such as “I’ll finish reviewing this book by Friday!” or something like that. 39 So just focus on the goal, not the timeframe. For example, rather than saying you’ll finish reviewing one book by Friday, focus on what you need to do to make that happen.
Embrace your passions and start exploring potential careers. Think about what subjects you enjoy most and what courses you’re passionate about. From there, research potential careers that are in line with your interests. 40 The more you know about a particular career, the better equipped you’ll be to decide your future.
A. Give back.

It is home to thousands of animals, including bright blue and yellow macaws(金刚鹦鹉). River dolphins swim and play in the water, and there are many different colored fish.
In one town, a 13-year-old boy named Rhenan would walk along the river every day. But looking at the river made him worry because there was rubbish everywhere. He saw plastic bottles, old clothing, and empty food packages. The water looked dark and ugly.
At school, Rhenan asked about the dirty river. “You wouldn’t want trash in your house,” said his teacher. “Think about the poor animals!” For days, Rhenan couldn’t stop thinking about the river. It didn’t seem right to him that this big, powerful river was filled with trash. “It’s hurting the animals in my area,” he thought. “And it’s also hurting the families who live here.”
Then Rhenan had an idea. The next morning, Rhenan talked to his mother about his plan for the river. He wanted to go around his town and ask for everyone’s help. Maybe if they all worked together, they could clean up the river! Rhenan’s mother loved his idea. “I believe the most important thing for you, Rhenan, is learning how to change things that you care about. That will stay with you forever,” she told him. She told him she would help him all along the way.
The next day, Rhenan went to the police department. Then he went to the Mayor’s office. He visited other schools, offices, and businesses. Soon he had a very big group of people who liked his idea!
