Did your family move before? How did you adjust to life in a new place? Nowadays, scientists helped some Burrowing Owls settle (安置) into their new homes.
Burrowing owls are small brown long-legged birds. They make homes in underground burrows (洞穴) and prefer to live in groups. In California, U.S.A., there is another kind of Burrowing Owls called the Western Burrowing Owl.
In the past, these owls lived in the grasslands. Later, people began building cities on many of the grasslands. This drove the owls off their burrows. Some of these birds were unable to find new homes. As a result, the number of Western Burrowing Owls in California was smaller than that in 1965. If the number keeps falling, they will be at risk of dying out.
Luckily, scientists found out the problem some years ago. They soon began trying to move these owls to some protected grasslands. In order to make the birds feel more “at home”, scientists played the recording sound of owl calls in these areas. They also used white paint to make fake droppings (假粪便) of the owls. These made the birds believe that other owls were living there. As a result, they accepted (接受) their new home and stayed there.
Scientists returned to check on the owls. Most of them seemed to like their new homes. Good luck to them enjoying their new lives there!

Koalas are often called koala bears, but they are not bears. They have small eyes, a big nose and round ears. And they have no tails. They can run as fast as a rabbit. They can also climb trees very well.
Koalas live in eucalyptus trees (桉树) and feed on the tree leaves. They usually sleep about 20 hours a day. The word “koala” means “no drink” because they don’t drink water very often. They get all the water they need from the yummy leaves they eat.
A koala mom usually has one baby at a time. When the baby is born (出生), it is only 2 cm long. It has no hair, no ears, and can’t see anything. It lives in its mom’s pouch (育儿袋), and stays there for about 6 months. That’s when it starts to see and grows ears and hair. After 8 to 9 months, it’s too big to get into the pouch, so it spends all its time on its mother’s back. At about 12 months, it leaves its mom to build its home. Usually, a koala can live for 16 years.
Now koalas are in great danger. Their numbers are dropping every year. A group called Bangalow Koalas started in 2019 to help save them. They’ve planted over 336,000 eucalyptus trees, and they want to plant 500,000 more by 2025. A worker of the group said, “We love the cute animals. Winter is a hard time for animals. The weather may be very cold. Food can be hard to find under the snow. How do animals live in this time? Let’s have a look.
In fall (秋天) when the weather gets cool, some animals go away from cold places and move to warm places. Some birds fly to south together because the weather there is warm and food there is easy to find. When warm days come, they will be back.
Some animals make changes to live in winter, like snowshoe rabbits in America. In summer, the rabbits’ fur(毛) is brown. But they grow new, white fur in winter. The new fur keeps them safe (安全的) in snow. In fall, they eat to get fat (脂肪), because the fat can also help them keep warm in winter.
