For his eleventh birthday, Lin was given a gift that would shape his life. On that day his father took him to the Children’s Activity Center and said he could choose any course that interested him. There was just one requirement: Lin would have to promise to study it for at least one year.
To that point Lin had had many hobbies, but none kept his interest for more than a week or two. His mom once gave him a bag of stamps to encourage stamp collecting. That hobby lasted a week. Then his father got him some paints hoping that Lin’s artistic side would shine through. Those paints were now under his bed, still unopened. This time Lin’s parents would let him decide.
Lin’s eyes moved down the noticeboard that listed all the courses on offer. He stopped at “Photography”. He liked the idea of taking beautiful pictures but the notice said that each student needed their own camera. Although Lin’s family weren’t poor, they weren’t rich either, and a camera cost a lot of money. He continued looking. The next course to catch his eye was “Language Art”. He didn’t even know what that meant. His father explained that it taught people how to make public speeches. Lin, a shy boy, could think of nothing worse.
Then he saw it. “Cooking” sounded like something he’d like to do. It was inexpensive and convenient it could be done alone and it was also creative. Based on Lin’s hobby history, his dad had doubts, but he agreed. Much to his parents surprise, Lin kept his promise. He studied cooking at the Center every Saturday and practiced at home, making delicious meals for his family. Everyone looked forward to birthdays, when they could eat his cakes. Lin got great satisfaction from the pleasure his food brought to others.
The months turned to years but his hobby never changed again. Now Lin is an adult and runs a successful restaurant. When customers say they enjoy his meal, he still gets the same pleasure he did as a child, and remembers the special gift received all those years ago.
4. Why didn’t Lin choose to study photography?
A. It was too expensive. B. He had no interest in it.

C. He didn’t think Lin would continue. D. Cooking wasn’t a good hobby for a boy.
7. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. A Strict Father. B. A Changeable Boy. C. The Fun of Cooking. D. The Birthday Gift.
C
When I was in primary school, my favourite place was the library. I was the kid who got shouted at for trying to bring home sixty books at a time because I just couldn’t decide which world I wanted to experience that week. I remember spending my weekends glued to a book, hungering for experiencing lives other than my own. Up until middle school, reading was a passion (酷爱) of mine.
Something changed after I entered high school though. All of a sudden, reading was a task that I could not avoid fast enough. The books that I read in school bored me, or even if I enjoyed the books themselves, the repetitive, challenging homework we completed based on those books made me hate reading as a whole.
It actually wasn’t until recently that I rediscovered my love for reading. How, you may ask? Audio books (有声书). Last summer, I spent every morning taking long walks while listening to them, and I would find myself lost in the stories for hours. And now I’m rediscovering my passion for reading. I feel that pull again. That curiosity.
My love story with reading may have had a happy ending, but not everyone is as lucky as me. What went wrong?
What tends (往往会) to happen is that students lose their love for reading because of the way many schools try to encourage children to read. For example when a child is told to read for twenty minutes every night, they tend to read for the required amount of time and then check the task off on their list. In this way, reading has suddenly become a boring task instead of an exciting experience.
Making sure that kids keep their passion for reading will require us to rethink how we teach reading in schools and how we introduce books to children outside of school as well. There needs to be less of a focus on meeting reading requirements and more of a focus on creating an environment in which students are actually excited to read.
8. Which word best describes the author’s love for books before high school?
A. Short-lived. B. Crazy. C. Secret. D. Conditional.
9. Why did the author once hate reading?
A. She couldn’t choose what to read. B. She found high school books difficult.
C. She was given too many books to read. D. Reading as a task made her lose interest in it.
10. What does the underlined word “pull” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Attraction. B. Responsibility. C. Happiness. D. Influence.
11. What advice does the author give in the last paragraph?
A. Develop kids’ interest in literature. B. Give kids after-school reading tasks.
C. Encourage parents to introduce books to kids. D. Reconsider schools’ methods of teaching reading.
The British are known for their sense of humour. However, it is often difficult for foreigners to understand their jokes. The main point to remember is that the British often use understatement.
Understatement means saying less than you think or feel. For example, if someone gets very wet in a shower of rain, he might say, “It’s a little damp (潮湿的) outside.” Or, if someone is very impolite and shouts at another person, someone else might say, “She isn’t exactly friendly.” Understatement is often used in an annoying situation or to make another person look silly. Understatement plays an important part in British humour.
Another key to understanding British humour is that the British like to make fun of themselves as well as others. They often laugh about the silly things that happen to our everyday life when someone falls over in the street. They also like to make jokes of people from different classes of society. They like to make jokes about their accents (口音), the way they dress and the way they behave. What’s more, the British love to watch comedies (喜剧) about people who do not know how to behave in society. The famous Mr Bean is a good example of this kind of humour.
Mr Bean is the role played by British actor Rowan Atkinson in 1990. Mr Bean doesn’t talk often, and instead he uses his body movement and facial expressions to make people laugh. Perhaps what makes Mr Bean so funny is that he does things that adults in the real world wouldn’t do. Mr Bean is popular in many countries round the world because you do not have to speak English to understand the humour. As a result, British sense of humour has become well known to many people.
12. Why is it difficult for foreigners to understand British jokes?
A. British jokes cover too many cultures.
B. Foreigners cannot speak English fluently.
C. The British seldom fully express how they really feel.
D. British jokes are not as funny as those in other countries.
13. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Humour in British daily life be. B. The kinds of British humour.
C. Explanation of understatement. D. The purpose of understatement.
14. How does Mr Bean make people laugh?
A. By telling funny stories. B. By making fun of himself.
C. By copying others’ behaviour D. By using body movements and facial expressions.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Humour Across Cultures B. Developing a Sense of Humour
C. British Humour in Comedies D. Understanding British Humour

根据文章第三段提到“He stopped at ‘Photography’. He liked the idea of taking beautiful pictures but the notice said that each student needed their own camera. Although Lin’s family weren’t poor, they weren’t rich either, and a camera cost a lot of money.(他在‘摄影’前停了下来。他喜欢拍漂亮照片的想法,但通知上说每个学生都需要自己的相机。虽然Lin的家庭并不穷,但也不富裕,而且相机很贵。)”可知,Lin没有选择摄影的原因是摄影太贵了,买不起相机。故选A。
根据文章第四段“Then he saw it. ‘Cooking’ sounded like something he’d like to do. It was inexpensive and convenient, it could be done alone and it was also creative.(然后他看到了。

For example, when a child is told to read for twenty minutes every night, they tend to read for the required amount of time and then check the task off on their list.
B 9. D 10. A 11. D

根据文章第一段提到“I was the kid who got shouted at for trying to bring home sixty books at a time because I just couldn’t decide which world I wanted to experience that week. I remember spending my weekends glued to a book, hungering for experiencing lives other than my own. Up until middle school, reading was a passion of mine.(我就是那个因为一次想带60本书回家而被骂的孩子,因为我无法决定那一周我想体验哪个世界。我记得我的周末都粘在书上,渴望体验除了我自己的生活以外的其他生活。直到初中,阅读都是我的热爱)”可知,作者在高中前对书籍是非常热爱的,甚至因为想带很多书回家而被骂,周末也都粘在书上,这表现出一种疯狂的热爱。故选B。
【9题详解】

The books that I read in school bored me, or even if I enjoyed the books themselves, the repetitive, challenging homework we completed based on those books made me hate reading as a whole.(不过我进入高中后,情况发生了变化。
根据上文“And now I’m rediscovering my passion for reading.(现在我又重新找到了对阅读的热爱)”和下文“That curiosity.(那种好奇心。)” 故选A。
根据文章最后一段“Making sure that kids keep their passion for reading will require us to rethink how we teach reading in schools and how we introduce books to children outside of school as well.(确保孩子们保持对阅读的热爱将需要我们重新思考我们在学校里如何教授阅读,以及我们在校外如何向孩子们介绍书籍)”可知,作者建议要重新考虑学校的阅读教学方法。故选D。
