The magical world of The Little Prince brought to life!
About the exhibition
French visual artist Arnaud Nazare-Aga has worked with Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Youth Foundation, and together they have designed a unique touring art exhibition of sculptures inspired by the original watercolor illustrations of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s book, The Little Prince, as well as photos, manuscripts (手稿) and drawings.
The exhibition will be presented for the very first time in Auckland from 1st June to 25th June, 2023 to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the publication of The Little Prince.

The top-selling album (唱片) Songs of the Humpback Whale was released in 1970. This collection of nature recordings changed the way many people thought about whales and eventually helped save thousands of whales’ lives.
The album might never have been made if it hadn’t been for a sound engineer named Frank Watlington. In the 1960s, Watlington was making underwater recordings when he noticed some strange, deep sounds, which he realized were coming from whales.
Watlington played the recordings for a pair of biologists named Roger and Katy Payne. When they listened, they were instantly hooked on the beauty of the whales’ voices.
Katy Payne studied music as well as biology, and she was amazed by how the whales communicate like an opera singer. She also noticed another interesting detail: they had recognizable patterns. In biology terms, an animal call with a repeating pattern is called a song. The songs of whales are so complex that some scientists have even compared them to composers and poets.
The Paynes thought that other people needed to hear the beauty of the whales’ songs, so Roger organized the recordings into an album. At the time when the album came out, whales were often hunted and traded for money and some whale species were dying out. Most people had never thought of whales as creatures that could communicate through songs. But after hearing the album, many people began to think differently.
The album led people to start the Save the Whales movement. Musicians began using whale songs in their music, and whales were included in movies and television shows. In 1982, the deep-sea whaling was banned. Before the ban, more than 50,000 whales per year were killed. After it, the number went down below 2,000.
It might seem incredible that just one album could help save the lives of so many whales. But this one-of-a-kind album revealed secrets long hidden beneath the waves and allowed these amazing creatures to finally share their songs with the human world.
24. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To call on people to save whales. B. To prove that whales are born singers.
C. To explain how a good album was made. D. To introduce a popular album and its stories.
25. Who first found the special voices of the whales?
A. A song recorder. B. An opera singer.
C. A sound engineer. D. A pair of biologists.
26. What surprised Katy Payne about the whales?
A. They could talk with scientists. B. They could sing like an opera singer.
C. They could repeat interesting sounds. D. They could communicate through songs.
27. Which is one of the values of the album?
A. It successfully stopped deep-sea whaling. B. It helped people understand whales better.
C. It made some music and movie stars popular. D. It encouraged musicians to work with scientists.

Human history is full of horse stories like guiding cowboys home on foggy nights and taking wounded soldiers through battle zones. Such sensible and highly trained horses made Elina Jatel, a computer scientist and roboticist, think of robots. “A horse that can take a rider home on its own would be the highest level of autonomy,” Jatel says. “You trust them with your life.” She was drawn to learning how such relationships form and if it could help improve human-robot interactions.
For a year, Jatel engaged herself in the horse world. She watched classes in horse training, and she also talked with students, instructors, trainers and horse owners. Along the way, Jatel even learned to ride.
Horses learn signals from their trainers on how to comfortably interact with people. People, too, must learn their part. Riders must learn what a horse wants or feels based on its behavior, and what signals to use to direct horses to perform in desired ways. Jatel found some similarities, here, to working with robots. People must learn how to direct robots to do specific tasks. They also must learn what to do when robots don’t perform as planned. The goal is to program robots that will respond predictably to inputs from people. But like horses, autonomous robots also should be able to respond on their own as conditions change. For example, a self-driving car must stop to avoid hitting something, even if some human mistakenly tells it to keep going.
Trainers and riders work with horses to build respect. Horses show that respect by matching their pace to a human or giving someone who is leading them a safe degree of personal space. Trainers begin their work with a horse by getting them to show signs of respect in basic interactions, Jatel says. Later, trainers will develop more complex interactions. Gradually, a horse’s respect can grow into trust.
But that trust is not given. And there may be a similar limitation with robots. What would it mean for robots and people to respect and trust each other? For now, she adds, this is largely uncharted territory. But she’s looking to build a path.
28. What drew Elina Jatel’s attention to horses?
A. Horses’ amazing performance. B. Long history of horse training.
C. Horse-human interdependence. D. Her horse-riding experience.
29. What are the robots of the highest autonomy designed to do?
A. To act like real horses. B. To show respect to humans.
C. To follow instructions from humans. D. To make independent and sensible decisions.
30. What will Jatel’s future research most probably focus on?
A. The limitations of robots. B. Trust between robots and humans.
C. Path toward higher robot efficiency. D. Similarities between horses and robots.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. History of Human-Horse Relationship B. Secrets of Human-Animal Interactions
C. The Role of Trust in Human-Robot Partnerships D. Horses as the Inspiration for Autonomous Robots
【答案】28. A 29. D 30. B 31. D

When we recall a memory, we bring back specific details about it. But we often also experience a vivid feeling of remembering the event. Memory researchers call these processes objective and subjective memory. A new study shows they can function independently and involve different parts of the brain.
“The study distinguishes between how well we remember and how well we think we remember, and shows that decision making depends primarily on the subjective evaluation of memory evidence,” says psychologist Denis Guetta.
The researchers tested objective and subjective memory. After showing volunteers a series of images of common objects, the researchers showed them pairs of images and asked them to determine which of the two they had seen before. They were asked to rate the memory as “recollected” (vivid and detailed), or “familiar” (lacking detail). Some tests showed similar image pairs, others unrelated pairs. This setup measured objective memory based on recognition and subjective memory based on vividness.
The researchers also used fMRI (功能性磁共振成像) to measure brain activity during this task. The results showed higher levels of objective memory with pairs of similar images, but participants claimed vivid memories more with dissimilar pairs. They were more likely to base their decision about whether to keep or clear an image on memory feeling rather than accuracy. For example, a person could have a vivid memory of going to an event with friends. Some of the actual details of that memory might be a bit off, but they may feel it is a vivid memory, so they might decide to go out with the same people again.
The fMRI data showed that objective and subjective memory engaged varied regions of the brain. The regions involved in subjective experiences were also involved in decision making, supporting the connection between the two processes.
“By understanding how our brains give rise to vivid subjective memories and memory decisions, we are moving a step closer to understanding how we learn to evaluate memory evidence to make effective decisions in the future,” says researcher Analiz William.
32. How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A By analyzing problems. B. By giving examples.
C. By interpreting findings. D. By defining concepts.
33. What were the volunteers asked to do during the study?
A. To draw the images they had previously seen.
B. To compare details of objects they had been shown.
C. To categorize their memory as recollected or familiar.
D. To recall specific emotions related to the images shown.
34. What does the research find out about decision making?
A. Both types of memory have great influence on it.
B. Our vivid memory helps us make wise decisions.
C. It mainly relies on subjective memory evaluation.
D. It’s decided by the accuracy of objective memory.
35. What is Analiz William’s attitude towards the study?
A. Optimistic. B. Tolerant.
C. Doubtful. D. Dismissive.

Holidays abroad are easier than ever thanks to smartphones. With the autumn weather fast approaching, it’s the perfect time of year to jet off and get away from hustles and bustles. ____36____ Here are some top tips to make sure you’re not caught out on your break abroad.
Treat yourself to a power bank
The batteries inside our phones are typically designed to last for around a day of moderate usage. ____37____ So you’re going to want some extra support so you don’t end up going AWOL (absent without leave) when your phone dies. That’s why I recommend picking up a USB power bank, which will give you a little bit of extra juice to keep you connected to the rest of the world.
Enable Data roaming (漫游)
____38____ The good news is that it is easier than ever to stay connected to the net when abroad. Make sure you check with your network provider what your roaming plan is. In many countries it is straightforward to buy a SIM card for a local network, with a much more generous data allowance. ____39____ If you’ve got a newer phone, it will probably support “eSIM” — where you can simply use an app like Holafly or Airalo while connected to wifi to set yourself up on a new network temporarily.
Download offline application software
And finally, you need to get your apps in order. Once you reach your destination you’ll need a mapping app, and maybe even a translation app — Apple and Google make their own version of both. And modern translation apps are particularly exciting. ____40____ Then you get a clear translation. Make sure that all of the critical data is downloaded so that apps work offline and you can travel the world like a local. Bon voyage!
A. What good is a phone without Internet access?
B. You simply wave your phone at the scanner instead.
C. In fact, you may not even need a physical card anymore.
D. Why do you need to get your phone ready to be connected?
E. But when you’re away from home, you’re probably using it so much more.
F. You can typically just wave the camera of your phone over pretty much anything.
G. But before leaving for the airport, ensure your phone is ready for the journey ahead!

Jatin and his younger sister, Neha, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks (盯着他们).
One day, Jatin took Neha’s shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed. So he begged his sister to keep it secret. Neha agreed and the two decided to share Jatin’ s running shoes. Neha’s school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Jatin. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Jatin often arrived late and was warned by the school.
A long distance race was going to be held for the boys in the city. When Jatin learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived. Jatin had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Neha and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided (碰撞) with Jatin from behind and Jatin fell on the ground.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Jatin looked up and he saw the other boys rushing ahead. Refusing to give up at this final and key point, Jatin struggled to jump to his feet and ran as fast as he could, though it was so painful for him. Eventually, he was the fourth one to dash across the finish line. Jatin couldn’t help sobbing at the thought of letting his sister down. But much to his surprise, the judge announced the third didn’t belong to the runner who collided with Jatin because he broke the rule and Jatin won the third prize. Jatin felt overjoyed and relieved during the award ceremony, holding the shoes close to his chest.
Paragraph 2:
Filled with pleasure, Jatin walked home in no time. He could not wait to see his sister and share the good news. On his arrival, Jatin found Neha was walking about outside nervously and anxiously. “Neha, see what I have got for you.” Jatin said excitedly, taking the prize out of his bag with his trembling hands. The instant Neha saw the shoes, her face lit up. “Thank you! Jatin.” Tears of joy welled up in their eyes as the brother and the sister hugged tightly together.

A. By analyzing problems.

E. But when you’re away from home you’re probably using it so much more.
