Do Dolphins Have a Language?
We know that dolphins make unique sounds, but is that a language? If you’re interested in it, you are
welcome to the activity recommended by Denise Herzing!
About Denise Herzing
Denise Herzing of Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is the organiser and research director of the Wild
Dolphin Project, which has a goal of understanding dolphins’ social system, behaviour, and communication.
For over thirty years, she has spent each summer watching Atlantic dolphins carefully in the Bahamas.
Activity Guide:
Purpose:
Dolphins use sound to communicate, but they can’t make sounds in the way we humans make. Out of the
water dolphins can make different sounds by changing the shape of their blowhole (呼吸孔), which is similar
to changing the shape of our own mouths. Underwater, though, they use a totally different system, and they
make sounds without letting any air out. You can learn more about how that works here. In this activity we’re
going to try to talk like a dolphin.
Materials:
Nothing! But find a partner, maybe a brother or sister or a parent — or if you have one, a dog or cat. After
all, this activity is about communication between humans and animals.
How To Do It:
Take a deep breath, hold your nose to keep it shut, and try to communicate with your partner. If your
partner is a pet, try saying its name or asking it to “come here”.
When you’re done, think about what made it hard, what solutions you found, and think why dolphins may
have developed to communicate in this way.
Then listen to sounds from all kinds of sea animals and compare your dolphin sound to theirs.
21. What can we learn about Denise Herzing?
A. She holds the activity in FAU. B. She wants to find a partner for her research.
C. She is an expert in dolphins. D. She fell in love with dolphins when young.
22. What would you have to do for the activity?
A. Have a pet next to you. B. Talk with your nose closed.
C. Keep breathing deeply. D. Compare dolphins with other animals.
23. Where can the text be found?
A.In an activity book. B. In a report. C. In a travel brochure. D. In a diary.
B
It is probably the strangest sport anyone has ever invented. And at first sight, it looks like the easiest.
Competitors have to do two things. The first is to stand still. The second is to place their hands anywhere on
the body of a car, and keep it there.
This is where things start getting difficult. Lots of people are doing the same thing. And the winner of the
“handathon” contest is the person who can carry on doing it for the longest time. That person gets to own the
car.
It still seems to be an easy thing to do. At the beginning it is. Anyone can stand still. But when the contest
has been going for four or five days, standing still seems like the most difficult job in the world. And keeping
the hand in place over this time becomes an act of serious attention. After a few days, the hand seems to belong
to someone else—someone who wants to go home and get some sleep.
Competitors are allowed to take a five-minute break every hour to eat, drink or do whatever else is
necessary. No one is allowed to lean on the car for support. Winners need to be able to show great powers of
attention. They also need to be able to develop special skills.
Maybe the popularity of the handathon is due to the fact that it is not necessary to be a trained athlete to
enter. Competitors in the Longview handathon certainly don’t seem to do much preparation. Most say they will
prepare by “getting lots of sleep”. Others say they will “eat healthy food” or “pray for success”. The whole
event gives ordinary people the chance to do something interesting and win something in the end.
Handathons are competitions, but there is little rivalry (敌对) between competitors. They help each other
out and keep each other’s spirits up. People who drop out early return with food, drink and encouragement.
24. What does the word “handathon” probably mean?
A. A sport involving walking a long distance.
B. A sport involving moving hands fast.
C. A sport involving keeping hands in place for long.
D. A sport involving holding up hands steadily for long.
25. What might make handathon seem to be the strangest sport?
A. It seems to be a very easy sport but in fact very difficult.
B. At first sight people think it obviously very difficult.
C. It is very interesting and an easy to all kinds of people.
D. It requires people to have strength instead of attention.
26. Why is handathon popular?
A. Specially trained athletes can enter the competition.
B. Competitors don’t need to make any preparations.
C. Anyone who is interested can be specially trained for it.
D. Ordinary people can have the chance to play and win something.
27. Which of the following is against the rule for handathon?
A. Standing still. B. Changing the place of hands.
C. Placing hands in one place. D. Taking a four-minute break.
C
Let’s get one thing straight: Studying sometimes is boring, right? But it is extremely necessary. After all,
working through difficult material is a necessary part of the learning process—which leads to the obvious
question: If I have to do it, is there at least a way to make it fun?
During Carol Dweck’s research for her book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, she found that
students deal with learning in one of the two ways: they either look at difficult courses with a fixed mindset or
with a growth mindset. Those with fixed mindsets believe that intelligence and talent are set in stone. For
example, if they find a certain math problem difficult, they’d think, “I guess I’m just not a math person.” In
contrast, students with growth mindsets are certain that they could change and grow in every area of their lives.
If they come across a difficult problem, they will think, “I can get better at this...But I have to tough it out.”
Dweck found that most students start out pretty interested in a subject. Yet over the semester, something
happens. Students with the fixed mindset may stay interested only when they do well right away. Those who
find it difficult are likely to show a big drop in their interest and enjoyment. If it isn’t a testimony (证明) to
their intelligence, they can’t enjoy it. In contrast, students with the growth mindset are able to continue to show
the same high level of enjoyment even when they find the work very difficult. Difficulty and interest go hand
in hand.
If you want to succeed and enjoy your study, don’t think of your classes as a series of tests that show just
how intelligent or unintelligent you are. Instead, think of them more as ongoing opportunities to learn and
grow.
28. Which of the following might students with fixed mindsets believe?
A. They are not interested in math. B. Failure is caused by their intelligence.
C. Their mindset determines their ability. D. Their abilities are not valued.
29. What does the underlined phrase “tough it out” mean in paragraph 2?
A.Give in to it. B. Get away from it. C. Stick to it. D. Refer to it.
30. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. Students who are able to deal with difficult problems do better in their studies.
B. Students who find it hard to fix problems lose their interest in their studies.
C. Students’ interests have a big effect on how well they perform in their studies.
D. Students mindsets play a huge role in how interested they are in their studies.
31. What may the author suggest learners doing to make studying fun?
A. Regarding learning as a test of intelligence. B. Choosing an active and positive mindset.
C. Paying little attention to the task difficulty. D. Looking for a strong inspiration to succeed.
D
Each year, the discovery of new shark species underlines how little we know about ocean biodiversity. In
a recent report conducted by Sibert and Rubin, they reported an unexpected finding: a large-scale extinction of
sharks in the pelagic ocean, the largest ecosystem on Earth, about 19 million years ago. Their discovery
suggests that some extinctions in the open sea of the past may have been mysterious.
The study of Sibert and Rubin takes advantage of a system by using tiny, hard bits of shark skin and bony
fish teeth that naturally fall from their bodies to the seafloor. These extremely small fossils provide a rich
record of ancient oceanic sharks and their abundance for thousands of years. By studying fossils from many
regions, the diversity patterns can give major insights into evolution (进化 ) of the open sea that would be
otherwise unknown.
Sibert and Rubin quantified(量 化 )a past extinction of sharks, reporting a 90% decline in number
and >70% drop in diversity. They found that nearer-shore sharks appear to survive, but migratory ones go
extinct. The finding of this study is that sharks had undergone a widespread extinction that reorganized their
communities from 16 million to 20 million years ago.
Sibert and Rubin narrowed the disappearance of sharks to a window of time under 100,000 years around
19 million years ago, but the causes of this event remain unclear. Because this time period does not stand out
as a period of major climatic change, the authors do not attribute(归因于 ) environmental factors as an
extinction driver. As for other causes, the loss of shark diversity is directly linked to overfishing.
The loss of sharks from the oceans has profound, complex, and unavoidable ecological consequences
because their presence reflects the stability of marine ecosystems. Yet, one-quarter of the global diversity of
sharks is currently threatened with extinction. Despite recent improvements in conservation actions, shark
communities never recovered from a mysterious extinction event 19 million years ago; the ecological fate of
what remains is now in our hands.
32. What did Sibert and Rubin find?
A. The negative impact of the extinction of sharks.
B. The mysterious reasons behind the disappearance of sharks.
C. The large-scale decline in the number of sharks about 19 million years ago.
D. The most recent advances in the study of the largest ecosystem.
33. How did Sibert and Rubin conduct their study?
A. By collecting and analyzing shark fossils worldwide.
B. By quantifying the movement of near-shore sharks.
C.By keeping track of ancient oceanic sharks and their activities.
D. By using a system to study the naturally fallen bits from sharks.
34. According to the passage, which of the following statement is true?
A. Overfishing is partly to blame for the loss of shark diversity.
B. The number of sharks has recovered to its previous level.
C. Scientists have figured out the exact causes of sharks’ extinction.
D. Sharks had undergone a widespread extinction due to the climate change.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Sharks: The Mysterious Extinction B. Sharks: The Marine Masters
C. Sharks: Killers or Misunderstood? D. Sharks: The Stories behind Them

Climate change influences people in many ways. Extreme weather and sea-level rise can destroy homes.
People can suffer physical harm from the effects of rising greenhouse gases. 36 And children and teens
are especially at risk of suffering from such mental problems, according to a new report.
“The brains of children and teens are still growing and developing,” says Lise Van Susteren. She is an
expert on the mental-health effects of climate change. Those growing brains make young people especially
easily influenced by climate change. For example, many kids worry that the influences of climate change are
expected to only worsen. 37 . Not every young person will have these feelings. But for many, the
feelings can get in the way of their normal life.
Luckily, there are things the young can do to deal with bad feelings. For example, Van Susteren advises,
“ 38 These are people who can help you let these feelings out.”
Susie Burke is an expert providing mental health care in Melbourne, Australia. ___39_ Playing outside
can help children keep calm. It can also improve someone’s ability to pay full attention to things.
40 For example, 14-year-old Milou Albrecht is an activist (积极分子). Since last year, she has
been one of the members of Australia’s energy-saving programs. Milou says doing something to stop climate
change helps her relax to some degree.
A. Talk with your friends or families.
B. She encourages students to get out in nature.
C. No part of the world has been left untouched.
D. The most important thing is to have a sense of hope.
E. It’s also a great way to take action to protect the environment.
F. But climate change can also be bad for people’s mental health.
G. This can cause feelings of sadness, fear, worry and nervousness.

Stand up and Exercise, Everybody!
Due to heavy academic pressure, an increasing number of students prefer concentrating on study instead
of relaxing and taking care of their fitness. Therefore, I strongly recommend all students to participate in
exercise during the breaks.
In view of limited time and space, jogging is convenient for us students, because except a pair of
comfortable sneakers, there is no particular equipment requirement. Besides, we can either run at our own
speed/pace or jog with our classmates, which enables us to work out freely. Last but not least, jogging is
beneficial to our physical and mental health. Not only can it strengthen our body, it can also relieve our
academic stress, so that we can get refreshed to engage in the next class.
I'm extremely convinced that jogging will benefit students physically and mentally. Hence, let’s stand up
and give jogging a try!

M: What a beautiful old chair! How much is it?
W: I’m asking for one hundred dollars for it.
M: Would you take seventy dollars for it?
W: Well, it’s worth at least two hundred. How about eighty-five dollars?
(Text 2)
W: This weekend will be perfect for a picnic. What do you think?
M: I’ll be busy on Saturday and Sunday, but I think we could do it right before the weekend.
(Text 3)
W: Hey, Mike, what did you think of the exam?
M: I believe I’ve passed, but I wish I’d done more revision.
W: Yeah, me too. At least I answered all the questions this time.
(Text 4)
W: Let’s go get some coffee.
M: I don’t want coffee. Let’s get lunch. Or maybe we could just go to the supermarket for some snacks.
W: Oh, I’m pretty hungry; let’s go to that Pizza House next to the coffee shop.

M: Hey, Rachel, can you help me set up a meeting with our customers?
W: Sure thing, Lucas.
M: Should I draw up an invitation? And then email it to them?
W: Yes, draw up a formal email inviting them to the meeting and suggest some dates.
(Text 6)
M: Have you done the music homework?
W: Yes, I used this amazing website.
M: What, the one the teacher told us?
W: I lost it but fortunately, my brother had used this other one at some point, so I had a look at that and found
just what I needed.
M: Lucky you! So, did you write about the drum like you said you would?
W: The website had information on so many different instruments that I kept changing my mind. I ended up
doing my essay on the violin, but only after I’d spent ages finding out about the piano.

W: Welcome to the Grand Plaza Hotel. How may I help you today?
M: Hi there! I’m checking in. I have a booking under the name John Smith.
W: Of course, Mr. Smith. Let me just pull up your booking ... Ah, here we are. Checking in for one night?
M: Yes, that’s correct.
W: Could I please have your ID and a form of payment?
M: Here’s my passport and credit card.
W: Thank you. And would you like any help with your suitcase?
M: No, thank you. I’ll manage.
W: Alright, Mr. Smith, you’re all set. Here’s your key card to room 305. Our lift is just to your right. Enjoy
your stay!

M: When I was younger, I used to do a lot of sport. I belonged to a club and we’d go all over the place to do
competitions.
W: Really? Did your parents use to take you?
M: No. I’d usually just go with people from the club. And I used to go and play football in the park with my
friends or cycle a really long way. Did you use to do much sport?
W: We used to go swimming as a family sometimes and we did a bit of gymnastics at school, which I hated.
But I actually think it’s better for girls now. They’d basically force us to do“girls”sports when I was younger,
but now girls are free to do all kinds of things—football, rugby and so on. I think it’s great.

M: Hi, how are you today?
W: I am quite fine. What about you? You look so upset today.
M: Yeah, I am a little bit confused about my future. I am unable to decide between Math and Biology.
W: Oh, I see. What do you think is best for you?
M: My father is a doctor and he wants me to become a doctor. He has advised me to study Biology in college. I
have attended a few lectures of Biology but I don’t think I like it.
W: So, you are interested in Math. Aren’t you?
M: No, not really. I am interested in IT and Computer. You know I love to be among technological products. I
have a handsome knowledge about Internet and networking.
W: Look, this is the matter of your future. You must talk to your father about it. Just try to convince him to
accept your point of view.

M: Hello everyone! As you all know, every year the student union organizes a trip for the senior class. This
year is no different! Our first major decision was to choose when we would go. Even though I know quite a
few of you suggested taking the trip in the spring, we decided that a winter trip would be best. The reason is
that we were worried that a spring trip would compete with the end-of-year exam period. It is important that
we all do well on the exams. Those of you that would like to attend the trip must contact James Plymouth. He
is the one responsible for trip bookings. Seats are limited, so it is wise not to wait until last minute. I am aware
that last year many students were left out of their spring trip because they didn’t express interest early enough.
For those of you that attend, a form must be signed by a parent. Also, concerning accommodation, you can
decide among yourselves who you want to stay with and whether you prefer a single or double room. I think
that just about covers it. Hope we have a great time!
