As I wash dishes at the kitchen sink, my husband, Scot, paces behind me, annoyed. “Have you seen my keys?” he asks. In the past I would have turned off the tap and joined the hunt while trying to comfort my husband. But that only made him angrier. Now, I focus on the wet dish in my hands. I don’t turn around. I don’t say a word. I’m using a technique I learned from a dolphin trainer.
For a book I was writing about animal trainers’ school, I started spending my days watching professional trainers do the seemingly impossible: teaching dogs to dance on command and chimps to skateboard. Eventually it hit me that the same techniques might work on that stubborn but lovable species, the American husband. The central lesson I learned is that I should reward behaviour I like and ignore behaviour I don’t. After all, you don’t get a sea lion to balance a ball on the end of its nose by talking. The same goes for the American husband.
I began thanking Scott if he threw one dirty shirt into the laundry basket. If he threw in two, I’d kiss him. I was using what trainers call “approximations” rewarding the small steps toward learning a whole new behaviour. With Scott the husband, I began to praise every small act every time: if he drove just a mile an hour slower, or was on time for anything.
I followed the students to Sea World San Diego, where a dolphin trainer introduced me to Least Reinforcing Scenario (L. R. S.). When a dolphin does something wrong, the trainer doesn’t respond in any way. The idea is that any response, positive or negative, fuels a behaviour. If a behaviour causes no response, it typically dies away. It was only a matter of time before he was again searching for his keys, at which point I said nothing and kept at what I was doing. It took a lot of discipline to maintain my calm, but results were immediate. I felt as if I should throw him a small fish.
4. How did the writer get the idea of treating her husband?
A. By rewarding her husband. B. By writing a book on animals.
C. By watching professional training D. By focusing on washing the dishes
5. What will happen if the trainer doesn’t respond to the dolphin’s mistake?
A. It will feel embarrassed. B. It will forget the wrong action
C. It will be annoyed. D. It will repeat the mistake.
6. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The writer’s husband behaves like animals. B. The writer often quarrels with her husband.
C. The writer is determined to learn from the dolphin. D. The writer behaves differently to her husband.
7. What is the tone of the text?
A. Humorous. B. Serious. C. Formal. D. Aggressive.

The rapid growth in skyscrapers worldwide, most of which have large windows, has led to a high demand for window washers. Though the job is well-paid, it is dangerous and accidents are not uncommon. However, if Skyline Technologies has its way, the dangerous job may soon be done by Ozmo, an intelligent window cleaning robot, with humans monitoring from the safety of the ground.
Much like humans, Ozmo, sitting on platforms hanging from the buildings, uses its arms and brushes to clean the dirt on the glass. A 3D map of the building’s surface programmed into its system allows the robot to skillfully deal with any obstacle it is likely to meet, as it moves up and down the buildings. The robot will self-correct and move around every obstacle that it might have met so as not to break a window.
Unlike present window washers, the robot cleaner does not require soap to clean the glass. Instead, it just uses distilled (蒸馏的) water to do the job. Yaron Schwarcz, CEO of Skyline Robotics, explains, “We are environmentally friendly.” Ozmo is also expected to be much more efficient than its human counterparts. While it presently takes three cleaners 480 hours each to clean windows of a 40-storey glass building, the robot will be able to do it in 80 hours. However, unlike other robots, Ozmo will not replace human workers, and only make their jobs safer by making them supervisors, who will be controlling the operation from the safety of the ground.
Whether Ozmo, which is still being tested, does as good a job as humans is not clear. If things go well, its creators have much bigger ambitions for Ozmo. Schwarcz told Forbes Magazine, “Window cleaning is just the tip of the iceberg. We plan to replace all tasks that are dangerous and dirty.”
8 Which statement about Ozmo is true?
A. Ozmo lacks the ability of dealing with obstacles.
B. Ozmo’s efficiency is based on high quality of soap.
C. Ozmo can do the cleaning task totally independently.
D. Ozmo works with the assistance of a 3D map of the building’s surface.
9. Why is Ozmo friendly to our environment?
A. It depends on solar energy. B. It uses less soap than other robots.
C. It consumes nothing made from chemicals. D. It makes our ecosystem more balanced.
10. What do the Schwarcz’s words mean?
A. He has confidence in Ozmo. B. He is doubtful of Ozmo.
C. Ozmo costs too much. D. Ozmo has replaced humans.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Robots make a difference. B. Meet Ozmo, window cleaning robot.
C. Humans are free from cleaning. D. Intelligent Ozmo, known worldwide.
D
It’s a common assumption that auditory information is reserved for living things with ears. But a recent study suggests the plants are listening, and some flowers even sweeten up their nectar (花蜜) when they sense a pollinator (传粉昆虫) approaching.
Since sound spreads as a wave, it doesn’t always take the complex set of ear bones and hair cells found in mammal ears to detect the presence of sound, just the ability to perceive vibrations (振动). To test the idea, evolutionary theoretician Hadany and her team looked at the relationship between bees and flowers. The team exposed the beach evening primrose, a kind of flower, to five types of sound: silence, the buzz of a bee from four inches away, and low, intermediate and high-pitched sounds produced by a computer. They then measured the amount of nectar that the flowers produced after being exposed to the sound.
Blossoms exposed to silence as well as high-frequency and intermediate-frequency waves produced the baseline amount of sugar expected in their nectar. However, the blossoms exposed to the bee’s buzz and low-frequency sounds bumped sugar content up 12 to 20 percent within three minutes of being exposed to the buzz of a bee. In other words, when they “heard” a bee approaching, they sweetened their nectar.
To make sure the sound is what was causing the flowers to produce sugar, and not some other factors, they placed the blossoms in a device which records very small movements, and replayed the sounds. They found that the bowl-shaped primroses resonated (产生共鸣) with the bee sounds and the low-frequency sounds, but did not vibrate with the other frequencies. If flower petals (花瓣) were removed, their sense of “hearing” was disabled as well.
Richard Karban from the University of California at Davis, who researches interactions between plants and injurious insects, says the new study is justified since it builds on other recent research showing plants can respond to vibrations. Meanwhile, Hadany says there’s still a lot left to learn about how plants perceive sound and the mechanism of those relationships.
12. Why does the team research the relationship between bees and flowers ________.
A. To figure out how bees find flowers B. To show why bees’ buzz benefits flowers.
C. To study what affects nectar production. D. To prove sound can be sensed by vibrations.
13. What does the underlined word “bumped” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Stored. B. Transported. C. Increased. D. Contained
14. The team found from the study that without flower petals ________.
A. bees will collect less nectar B. flowers will lose the ability to hear
C. flowers will attract fewer bees D. bees will produce low-frequency sounds
15. What would Hadany’s future study probably focus on?
A. How plants detect sounds. B. Why sounds appeal to plants.
C. How sounds help plants grow. D. Why plants love certain sounds.

When we are little kids, birthday parties are momentous occasions. They are our time to shine, and we love everything about them: the balloons, the games, the cake, the gifts, and so on.
After reading cool stories about police officers solving mysteries, Allen Miller thought the police were awesome, hoping to become one of them! So, when he had to choose a theme for his seventh birthday party—he went with his favorite: the police! And all he wanted for his birthday party was a model police car. He excitedly invited some of his friends and anxiously awaited the day. Unfortunately, none of them could make it to the party due to various reasons,
Allen’s mom Rachel wrestled with the challenging decision: should she cancel the party and save Allen the embarrassment of an empty party room? He had been looking forward to the party and talking about it daily, so it would break his heart to cancel it.
Officer Frank Smith, who had already planned with Rachel and agreed to show up at the party, heard from Rachel that it might be canceled due to low attendance. That’s when he decided to save the day—he is a police officer after all! His duty is to serve and protect, and he decided to protect Allen from having a bad day, and serve him the most amazing seventh birthday party! Officer Smith got the whole local police to join in. “We like to be involved in our community. It’s not just about enforcing (执行) the law. We like to be there in the good times as well,” he explained to Rachel.
On the day of Allen’s party, Officer Smith picked up Rachel and Allen in his police car. The boy didn’t know where they were going, but was excited. They stopped at Town Hall, and officer Smith led them into the meeting room where a group of policemen were waiting to wish Allen a happy birthday.

8. Which statement about Ozmo is true?
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. A 11. B

【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. A

The moment Allen stepped inside, a chorus of “Happy Birthday” filled the meeting room, and he found himself surrounded by lots of police officers holding balloons. Officer Smith introduced him to all the officers, who gave him high fives. Allen was thrilled, and his eyes sparkled with excitement as he looked at the grand police-themed cake. As Allen cut into the cake with the help of his mom, the room erupted into cheers and laughter, adding to the joyful atmosphere.
After they enjoyed the cake, officer Smith took out a gift bag. “It’s for you.” He presented the delicately wrapped parcel to Allen, who was stunned by the surprise. “Wow, a model police car! It looks exactly like the one we came here in! Thank you!” Officer Smith smiled, “Anytime, Allen.” Allen hugged Officer Smith and thanked him again for making the otherwise crushing disappointment his time to shine. It was the local heroes who helped by being part of the community and inspiring the young soul in small but effective ways.
