W: Thank you.
M: How do you like BedZED?
W: It is a great zone. You know, all the energy in BedZED is produced by special boards on the roofs of the buildings. The boards can turn sunlight into electricity, so I don’t feel guilty about harming the environment.
M: So, even in the British climate, it’s possible to generate enough solar energy for residents. By the way, what kinds of people live there?
W: All kinds, such as teachers, nurses and young professionals. BedZED has shared workspaces where people share computers to save energy. There’s also a library for us. Instead of backyards, the gardens are on the roofs!
M: I’d love to see this place.
W: Well, you can. But don’t drive. There’s nowhere to park. I go everywhere by bike or by public transport.
M: You really have a green lifestyle. Then how are you getting home today?
W: I’ll take the bus.

When I began the Orange Street News in November of 2014, I had only one subscriber, my grandma. She paid $1 for a year subscription. My second subscriber was my neighbor Sue. Those first few months were pretty slow. I remembered knocking on doors up and down Orange Street in the freezing cold handing out the free papers I had made from my home computer. I got a lot of “oh isn’t she cute” looks but not a lot of subscribers. Looking back, I understand people weren’t exactly dying to read stories like my baby sister being born and my neighbor talking about how bad dorm rooms smell!
Everything changed one day in April of 2016. That was the day when the Orange Street News was the first to report that a murder happened in my community. People around the country were really shocked that I got that story. But still, a lot of people got upset that someone so young was reporting on something so serious. They were just looking at my age, not my reporting. I reported the facts to the people. The right facts. That’s the job of a reporter and I took it seriously.
Since breaking the story of the murder, I’ve published hundreds of stories and broken countless exclusive. I made sure to keep reporting straight news. I never put my opinion on news story. And as my reporting grew, so did my readers. And so many other great things happened too. I got a book deal with Scholastic. People are even making a television show based on my life.
When the Orange Street News hit the one million hits mark, I felt shocked. This is something I never expected. I couldn’t help but think back to that first subscription, the one I sold to my grandma. She was my first supporter. Since then, so many more people who I’ve never met and who don’t know me began to support me. First in Selinsgrove. Then people from all across the country. It is all of you who make the Orange Street News possible.
24. Why did the writer have few subscribers at the beginning?
A. The yearly subscription fee was high. B. The initial stories were not appealing.
C. Neighbors were attracted by her cute look. D. Knocking on doors disturbed the neighbors.
25. What changes did the reporting in 2016 bring to the writer?
A. The paper gained great popularity. B. The paper issued one million copies.
C. The writer made a television show. D. The writer wrote a book on Scholastic.
26. What counts most as a reporter in the writer’s eye?
A. Break the story. B. Cover serious news.
C. Get the story straight. D. State opinions on news story.
27. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To inspire readers to become reporters. B. To share her secret of breaking exclusive.
C. To advertise the Orange Street News. D. To express gratitude to her supporters.
B 25. A 26. C 27. D

根据第一段中“Looking back, I understand people weren’t exactly dying to read stories like my baby sister being born and my neighbor talking about how bad dorm rooms smell!”(回想起来,我明白人们并不是特别渴望读到像我妹妹出生和我邻居谈论宿舍房间有多臭这样的故事!)”
根据第二段中“Everything changed one day in April of 2016. That was the day when the Orange Street News was the first to report that a murder happened in my community. (2016年4月的一天,一切都变了。那天,《橙街新闻》是第一个报道我们社区发生谋杀案的媒体。)”以及第三段中“And as my reporting grew, so did my readers. (随着我的报道越来越多,我的读者也越来越多。)”可知,2016 年对那起谋杀案的报道使报纸越来越受欢迎,读者增多了,也就是获得了极大的知名度。故选A。
根据第二段中“I reported the facts to the people. The right facts. That’s the job of a reporter and I took it seriously. (我把事实报告给了人们。正确的事实。那是记者的工作,我认真对待了。) ”以及第三段中“I made sure to keep reporting straight news. I never put my opinion on news story. (我确保一直报道真实新闻。我从不在新闻故事中掺杂个人意见。)”可推断出,在作者眼中,作为记者要如实报道事实,把事实弄准确是最重要的。故选C。
【27题详解】

C
The experiments sound like something out of a horror movie. Sew two mice together so that they share blood in a single circulatory system. This procedure has led to new discoveries in the study of aging. Studies using the procedure, called parabiosis, suggest that pumping blood from young mice into old mice can make the old mice act young again. But scientists are still testing “young blood” and debating whether it really holds the secret to turning back time.
In the 2000s, Thomas Rando, a neurologist at Stanford University in California, conducted an experiment using parabiosis. He found that the young mouse blood caused certain cells in older mice to help repair damaged muscles. But the blood from old mice also affected young mice in negative ways. Rando’s experiment also hinted at some growth of new brain cells.
This really interested Tony Wyss-Coray, a neuroscientist at Stanford University. In 2011, Wyss-Coray and his graduate student Saul Villeda found that if old mice received blood from young mice, they experienced a burst of cell growth in the hippocampus — as many as three to four times more new cells than mice that did not receive young blood. And if young mice received old blood, this slowed cell growth, making the mice old before their time. This was partly due to a high level of a protein called CCL11 in old blood. CCL11 blocks the growth of new brain cells.
These results stirred a great deal of excitement. What if young blood could help Alzheimer’s patients improve their memories? This is exactly what Wyss-Coray set out to learn.
Michael and Irina Conboy, research scientists at UC Berkeley who worked with Thomas Rando have conducted a blood-exchange experiment. The Conboys noted that although young blood had some positive effects on older mice, it’s not so much that young blood has magical age-defying properties. Instead, it just helps filter out or dilute some of the “bad stuff” in old blood. “Science is the process of refining the questions we have, ” Conboy says. Researchers are hopeful that, one day science will finally unlock the secrets of aging.
28. Why might young mice receiving old blood become older according to Wyss-Coray?
A. Cell growth in the hippocampus. B. Age-defying properties.
C. Repaired muscles during Parabiosis. D. High amount of CCL11.
29. What does the underlined word “dilute” mean in paragraph 5?
A. Identify. B. Weaken. C. Intensify. D. Locate.
30. What do the researchers think of the prospects of the experiments?
A. Unconvincing. B. Skeptical. C. Promising. D. Unclear.
31. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Overturning Old Age B. Regaining Lost Memories
C. Maintaining Healthy Cells D. Uncovering Alzheimer’s Disease
D 29. B 30. C 31. A
根据第三段中的“And if young mice received old blood, this slowed cell growth, making the mice old before their time. This was partly due to a high level of a protein called CCL11 in old blood. CCL11 blocks the growth of new brain cells.(如果年轻的老鼠接受了年老的血液,这就会减缓细胞的生长,使老鼠提前衰老。这在一定程度上是由于老年老鼠血液中一种叫做CCL11的蛋白质含量很高。CCL11阻断新脑细胞的生长。)”可知,年轻老鼠接受年老的血液会使老鼠提前衰老,在很大程度上由于老年老鼠血液中一种叫做CCL11的蛋白质含量很高。故选D项。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线单词前的“The Conboys noted that although young blood had some positive effects on older mice, it’s not so much that young blood has magical age-defying properties.(两位科学家指出,尽管年轻的血液对年老的老鼠有一些积极的影响,但并不是说年轻的血液有神奇的抗衰老特性。)”可知,两位科学家认为年轻血液对年老老鼠有积极影响,但并非是年轻血液有神奇的抗衰老特性,结合“Instead, it just helps filter out or dilute some of the “bad stuff” in old blood.(相反,它只是帮助过滤掉旧血液中的一些“坏东西”。)”
根据尾段中的“Researchers are hopeful that, one day science will finally unlock the secrets of aging.(研究人员希望有一天科学能够最终揭开衰老的秘密。)”
根据首段中的“Studies using the procedure, called parabiosis, suggest that pumping blood from young mice into old mice can make the old mice act young again. But scientists are still testing “young blood” and debating whether it really holds the secret to turning back time.(使用这种被称为异种共生的方法的研究表明,将年轻老鼠的血液注入年老老鼠体内,可以使年老老鼠恢复年轻的行为。 故选A项。
D
Your own experience of revising for exams might tell you that sessions of uninterrupted concentration can help you to better remember key pieces of information. Indeed, many students will engage in intensive revision just before a test — in the belief that essential subject facts and figures will be memorized ready for exam day.
However, this commonly held wisdom has been contradicted by an observation made in a psychological study. Now known as the Zeigarnik effect, it was found that interruption during a task that requires focus can in fact improve a person’s ability to remember it afterwards.
The psychologist Bluma Zeigarmik observed the effect of interruption on memory processing in 1927. In the experiment, she asked each participant to complete a series of separate tasks, such as solving a puzzle or assembling a flat-pack box. During around half of the assignments, participants were subtly interrupted by the experiment supervisor, while during the remaining tasks, they were allowed time to complete them uninterrupted. Following the experiment, Zeigarnik interviewed each participant, asking them to recall details of each task that they had attempted.
Zeigarnik’s initial findings revealed that participants were able to recall details of interrupted tasks around 90% better than those who had been able to complete undisturbed. These results suggest that a desire to complete a task can cause it to be retained in a person’s memory until it has been completed, and that the finality of its completion enables the process of forgetting it to take place.
One way of employing the Zeigarnik effect when attempting to memorize a detailed piece of information, such as a long phone number, or when revising a subject, might be to avoid trying to remember it in its entirety in one sitting. Take a look at the information, familiarize yourself with it, then “interrupt yourself” — look away from where it is written for a few moments and think of something else, before returning a few more times to remember chunks of the number. Finally, piece these chunks together and attempt to recall the number in its entirety.
32. What does the underlined phrase “this commonly held wisdom” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Remembering essential subject facts guarantees success in exams.
B. Interruption on memory processing generates unexpected results.
C. Uninterrupted concentration contributes to effective revision.
D. Revision with full concentration boosts long-term memory.
33. How did Zeigarnik measure the effect of interruption on participants’ memory?
A. By conducting brain scans. B. By rating participants’ memory.
C. By enquiring about task details. D. By observing physical reactions.
34. Which strategy should be used to avoid forgetting when revising a subject?
A. Repeated writing and recalling. B. Entire remembering in one sitting.
C. Rapid memorization without breaks. D. Breaks in review and repeating in chunks.
35. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The origin of the Zeigarnik Effect. B. The discovery of the Zeigarnik Effect.
C. The evaluation of the Zeigarnik Effect. D. The application of the Zeigarnik Effect.
C 33. C 34. D 35. B
根据文章第一段中“Your own experience of revising for exams might tell you that sessions of uninterrupted concentration can help you to better remember key pieces of information. (你自己复习考试的经验可能会告诉你,不间断的集中注意力可以帮助你更好地记住关键信息。)”以及第二段首句“However, this commonly held wisdom has been contradicted by an observation made in a psychological study.(然而,this commonly held wisdom却被一项心理学研究的观察结果所反驳)”中的“this commonly held wisdom”指的就是前文中提到的“不间断的专注有助于有效复习”的观点。
根据文章第三段中“Following the experiment, Zeigarnik interviewed each participant, asking them to recall details of each task that they had attempted.(实验结束后,Zeigarnik采访了每位参与者,要求他们回忆自己尝试过的每项任务的细节。)” C“By enquiring about task details(通过询问任务细节)”符合题意。
文章第五段提到“One way of employing the Zeigarnik effect when attempting to memorize a detailed piece of information, such as a long phone number, or when revising a subject, might be to avoid trying to remember it in its entirety in one sitting. Take a look at the information, familiarize yourself with it, then ‘interrupt yourself’ — look away from where it is written for a few moments and think of something else, before returning a few more times to remember chunks of the number. Finally, piece these chunks together and attempt to recall the number in its entirety.(在尝试记忆一个详细的信息(如一个长电话号码)或复习一个科目时,运用Zeigarnik效应的一种方法可能是避免一次性全部记住。看一下信息,熟悉一下,然后“打断自己”——把目光从所写的东西上移开一会儿,去想别的事情,然后再回来几次记住数字的几个部分。最后,把这些部分拼凑起来,试着完整地回忆这个数字)”可知,为了避免在复习一个科目时忘记,应该使用在复习中穿插休息,然后分块重复的策略。因此,选项D“Breaks in review and repeating in chunks(在复习中穿插休息并分块重复)”符合题意。
根据第二段中“Now known as the Zeigarnik effect, it was found that interruption during a task that requires focus can in fact improve a person’s ability to remember it afterwards.( 现在被称为Zeigarnik效应的研究发现,在需要集中注意力的任务中被打断实际上可以提高一个人事后的记忆能力。)” B“The discovery of the Zeigarnik Effect(Zeigarnik效应的发现)”概括文章主旨。故选B。

How Gratitude Makes You Happier
Choosing to be thankful may well be an easy and accessible way to boost your happiness. We usually think of happiness as a subjective sense of well-being, a feeling of joy and satisfaction. But more than just an emotion or fleeting (短暂的) feeling, happiness also includes a deep sense of meaning, worth and purpose in life. ___36___ Let’s take a look at the positive benefits of gratitude and how you can learn to cultivate gratitude in your daily life.
Research has shown gratitude has far-reaching effects on physical health. When people are thankful, they’re more likely to exercise, eat better, and take care of their health. ___37___ Even better blood pressure and positive effects on the heart have been linked to gratitude.
___38___ It increases self-esteem, enhances positive emotions and makes us more optimistic since experiencing gratitude activates neurotransmitters like dopamine, which we associate with pleasure, and serotonin, which regulates our mood. It also promotes feelings like trust and generosity, which are induced by oxytocin, a hormone released by the brain.
Just like a muscle, thankfulness is something we need to exercise more often. One way is to learn from the Scandinavians, who, the UN’s World Happiness Report suggests, are the happiest people in the world. It’s worth pausing to think about why. Scandinavians themselves are determining their levels of happiness. They are appreciative of a functioning society where they have economic security and where social institutions support everyone. ___39___ They value “moderation”, a just enough-ness. They don’t chase happiness or work overtime for months at a time. They remain grateful for a healthy work-life balance. As a result of this satisfaction and contentment, they feel their lives have value.
So, take some time to be thankful. ___40___
A. Do Gratitude Exercises.
B. Yet, there is something else.
C. Gratitude supports happiness in ways related to all of these.
D. Gratitude has a strong positive impact on mental health as well.
E. It can impact your happiness and enhance many aspects of your life.
F. The best way to make gratitude a habit is not to wait for special moments.

Yours,
Li Hua
Dear Chris,
This letter is in response to your request for advice concerning our school’s upcoming festival — Beauty of English.
I strongly support retaining the English Dubbing Contest as it improves our English pronunciation, meanwhile making classic English movies accessible to a wider audience. For new activities, how about an “English Poster Design Show”? Students could express the essence of English literature, idioms, or famous quotes through visually compelling artistic posters. Not only would it foster their creativity and artistic expression, but it would also encourage them to delve deeper into the charm of English. English Debate Challenge is also not a bad idea.
These additions would make the festival more vibrant and engaging. Looking forward to your consideration!
Best regards,
Li Hua

Kevin has always adored Halloween. This year, as always, he’d collected everything he needed for his “Halloween masterpiece.” One evening, he took a stroll down the block, noticing how everyone had decorated their houses with glowing pumpkins and ghosts. He was practically glowing with excitement.
But as he walked, something that caught his eye dimmed his smile. One house stood dark and empty. No pumpkins. No cobwebs. Just a bare, lonely porch (门廊). It was Mrs. Kimbly’s house. He told me about it when he got home.
“Mom, Mrs. Kimbly’s house doesn’t have any decorations. I think she needs help.” I told him maybe she didn’t want to decorate this year, but Kevin was certain. “Halloween is supposed to be fun. She shouldn’t have to spend it feeling bad.”
That was my Kevin. His heart was as big as the world. After I said it was okay to check on her, he gathered his decorations, even his favorite carved pumpkin, and went to her house. He decorated her front porch and was super excited until he heard her yell behind him.
“What are you doing here?” she asked.
“I…I just wanted to decorate your house,” he stammered.
“I don’t need any decorations!” she shouted and removed the decorations. “Now go away!”
When Kevin returned home that night, he looked completely defeated. He told me how unhappy Mrs. Kimbly looked. “Maybe she’s really lonely, honey,” I said gently. “Not everyone feels happy during the holidays.”
On Halloween night, he dressed up as a vampire but looked less excited than usual. As we made our way down the street, he couldn’t stop glancing toward Mrs. Kimbly’s house. It was still dark and empty, and I knew he was worried the other kids would see it as a target for tricks.
“Mom, I’m going to stay there,” he said suddenly. “I don’t want anyone to mess with her house.” And that’s just what he did. He took his candy bag and sat down on her porch steps. Whenever kids came up expecting candy, he’d give out some of his own. His candies dwindled quickly, but he stayed put, determined to protect her home.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1: A little while later, the door creaked open, and Mrs. Kimbly stepped out.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: “Thank you, Kevin,” she whispered.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A little while later, the door creaked open, and Mrs. Kimbly stepped out. “Kevin, what are you doing here?” she asked, surprised. Kevin gazed up at her, then down at his almost empty candy bag. “I just didn’t want anyone to mess with your house, Mrs. Kimbly.” he said quietly. Mrs. Kimbly’s face softened. She sat down beside us and took a deep breath. Then she told her story, and Kevin finally knew why she had spent so many years alone. No kids, no grandkids. It didn’t seem worth celebrating anymore. “But you don’t have to be alone,” Kevin smiled. “We are here.” She gave him a small, sad smile, her eyes glistening.
“Thank you, Kevin,” she whispered. “And I’m sorry for removing all the decorations. I shouldn’t have thrown the pumpkin away.” Kevin’s smile was as warm as ever. “It’s okay, Mrs. Kimbly. I have another one at home. I’ll bring it over, and we can carve it together.” Mrs. Kimbly chuckled, and that was a sound I’d never heard from her before.
26 What counts most as a reporter in the writer’s eye?

A The origin of the Zeigarnik Effect. B. The discovery of the Zeigarnik Effect.
C. The evaluation of the Zeigarnik Effect. D. The application of the Zeigarnik Effect.

G. Much evidence points to lower stress, reduced pain and improved immune systems as a result of being thankful.

(1) 续写词数应为150左右;
