I sold one of my cars and switched to an e-bike one year ago. I knew that I was doing something good for the planet. But I still viewed giving up my car as something reserved for the deeply committed and adventurous, something that Greenpeace volunteers did to make the world better. However, I live in Colorado; e-bike would mean freezing in the winter and sweating in the summer. It was the right thing to do, I thought, but it was not going to be fun.
I was very wrong. Before selling my car, I worried most about riding in the cold winter months. But I quickly learned that, as the saying goes, there is no bad weather, only bad clothes. I wear gloves, warm socks and a ski jacket when I ride, and I am almost never too cold.
Though I, like many would-be cyclists, was worried about arriving at the office sweaty in hotter months, the e-bike solved my problem. Even when there was 35 degrees Celsius outside, I didn’t sweat, thanks to my bike’s pedal-assist mode (脚踏辅助模式). If I am honest, sometimes I didn’t even pedal; I just switched to pedal-assist mode, sat back and enjoyed my ride.
But biking to work wasn’t just not unpleasant — it was entirely enjoyable. One day, shortly after selling our car, I hopped on (跳上) my bike after a stressful day at work and rode home down a street edged with changing fall leaves. I felt more connected to the physical environment around me than I had when I’d traveled the same route surrounded by metal and glass. I have to say, this sensation made me happier and healthier.
Of course, e-bikes aren’t going to replace every car on every trip. In a country where uncontrolled stretching of suburbs and malls and unprotected bike paths are the norm, it’s unrealistic to expect e-bikes to replace cars in the way that the Model T (福特公司第一款大规模生产的汽车) replaced horses. But as an individual, making short trips on an e-bike would save money, cut carbon footprints, and improve health and well-being.
4. What did the author originally think of letting go of his car?
A. A healthy move. B. A difficult choice.
C. A call of duty. D. A crowd-driven decision.
5. How did the author feel about the actual experience of riding to work?
A. Confused. B. Embarrassed. C. Anxious. D. Amazed.
6. What does the underlined part “this sensation” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Interest in exploring new routes. B. Desire to head home faster.
C Relief from work pressure. D. Love for exposure to nature.
7. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. E-bike will replace cars very soon.
B. Cyclists should do more to protect themselves.
C. Cities need a more inclusive transport network.
D. The Model T will be back quickly.

Some countries mainly depend on food import from other countries. The United Arab Emirates imports roughly 90% of its food. A company in the capital Abu Dhabi wants to help change that.
Pure Harvest Smart Farms is developing smart greenhouses, using technology to allow agriculture to develop in the tough environment. During the severe summer months, temperatures can rocket to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. While inside the greenhouse, the environment is suitable for farming. An advanced system analyzes data to adjust sunlight, temperature and humidity (湿度). Other conditions such as water and airflow are also measured.
Compared with traditional farming methods, Pure Harvest’s novel resource-efficient food pruction systems have great superiority, such as saving resources and reducing carbon emissions. Other special features of its systems include the absence of soil and pesticides. Pure Harvest’s growing systems also result in very low water consumption per kilogram of production.
As the population in the UAE continues to grow and there’s more focus on sustainability, the new farm will help to meet this increasing demand and give UAE consumers more options to enjoy the best-quality produce. “It was something that dealt with food security, water protection, economic diversification for the region, and sustainability,” said CEO Sky Kurt.
“Maybe in the future we will have enough sensors on the plants so that the line is more productive,” Jan Prins, the farm’s head added. “There are thousands of people working worldwide to make this better.”
The farm will improve food security in the UAE, but the new idea could have benefits far beyond its borders. According to experts, global food production will have to double by 2050.
8. What’s the main function of the smart greenhouses?
A. To address the environment issues.
B. To enhance the planting environment.
C. To monitor the plants inside them.
D. To increase the indoor temperature.
9. Which is NOT the advantages of the smart farms?
A. They need more soil. B. They are environment-friendly.
C. They need less water. D. They can save energy.
10. What can be inferred about the new farm from Sky Kurtz’s words?
A. It helped the country to solve water pollution.
B. It requires thousands of people to work together.
C. It has been equipped with enough sensors.
D. It makes a difference to UAE’s development.
11. What’s the main idea of the text?
A New farms help improve agricultural planting.
B. Farmers make efforts to protect natural resources.
C. Global food production has largely increased.
D. Smart greenhouses give way to traditional farms.

A team of biologists from the University of Neuchatel, working with staff from multiple institutions in South Africa, has found that removing horns (角) from black rhinos (犀牛) to protect them from hunters may have social implications for the rhinos.
Previous research has shown that rhinos are under threat by hunters that kill them illegally obtain their horns, which are a popular product. In this new effort, the research team focused on the black rhinos that live in Africa. There are currently about 6200 black rhinos in Africa, which have been given protected status. Unfortunately, despite armed rangers (护林员) watching over them, their numbers have dropped over the years.
To prevent further losses, animal management authorities have authorized park administrators to remove the horns of many of the rhinos, removing the motive for hunting. Such removals have proven to be effective — hunting has come to a stop gradually under the programs. However, these programs are not a simple solution — removing horns safely is costly and puts workers and rhinos at risk of harm. Also, the horns grow back, and must be removed every 18 to 24 months.
Less well understood is the impact on the rhinos after horn removal. To learn more, the researchers in this new effort studied the habits of black rhinos in the Manyoni Private Game Reserve in South Africa. The team started by making maps of the rhino range. They used data from sightings made before a dehorning (切去角) project began in 2016 and then for sightings made over the subsequent years.
They found that after the loss of a horn, male rhinos greatly reduced their range — some lost up to 80% of their territory. For some females, the team reports, the reduced range was even greater. The group repeated their work in nine other reserves using 15 years of data-gathering and found similar results. The researchers also found that the removal of horns made the black rhinos less social with one another — instead of interacting, they would intentionally avoid one another.
12. What is paragraph 2 mainly about concerning the rhinos?
A. The value of their horns.
B. The reduction in their population.
C. The consequence of dehorning them.
D The role of armed rangers in protecting them.
13. Which aspect of the dehorned rhinos did the new study focus on?
A. Their survival risks. B. Their gender identities.
C. Their social behaviors. D. Their reproduction patterns.
14. What might be the researchers’ attitude to dehorning rhinos?
A. Favorable. B. Tolerant. C. Unconcerned. D. Disapproving.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Time to Protect Rhinos.
B. The Endangered Rhinos.
C. Dehorning Rhinos Affecting Social Behaviors.
D. The Reasons of Removing Horns of Rhinos.

That day, Tom’s mom Gina wanted to change up his routine by inviting him to watch a new superhero movie with her. Gina kept calling Tom on his cellphone, but he wouldn’t pick up. So, she decided to make her way to the cafe where Tom was.
When she spotted Tom and his friends, she made her way to them, only to see Tom’s friends giggling. “Your grandmother’s come to pick you up, Tom!” they teased. Tom glared (怒视) at his mother and walked up to her to stop her from going any closer. “What are you doing here?” he blamed her. “You’re embarrassing me in front of my friends!”
“I just wanted to ask if you wanted to watch a movie with me,” she smiled , trying to hold his hand. Tom shrugged off her hands. “Leave me alone! I’m with my friends!” he told her.
Gina walked back home sadly. When Tom got home that night, it was already half past eleven. He went straight to his room, not even realizing Gina was in the living room.
“What’s the matter, Tom?” Gina asked him. “Why is it that you don’t like being with me anymore? I’m worried about you, Tom. I rarely know what’s going on in your life!” she said.
“You’re such an old, boring woman! Why did you even give birth to me?!” he yelled. Gina felt a pain in her chest. Before she could respond, Tom grabbed his backpack and ran out the door.

B(原创)
C. Relief from work pressure. D. Love for exposure to nature.
7. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. E-bike will replace cars very soon.
B. Cyclists should do more to protect themselves.
C. Cities need a more inclusive transport network.
D. The Model T will be back quickly.
【答案】4. B 5. D 6. D 7. C

D. The role of armed rangers in protecting them.
13. Which aspect of the dehorned rhinos did the new study focus on?
A. Their survival risks. B. Their gender identities.
C. Their social behaviors. D. Their reproduction patterns.
14. What might be the researchers’ attitude to dehorning rhinos?
A. Favorable. B. Tolerant. C. Unconcerned. D. Disapproving.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Time to Protect Rhinos.
B. The Endangered Rhinos.
C. Dehorning Rhinos Affecting Social Behaviors.
D. The Reasons of Removing Horns of Rhinos.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. C

What sort of decisions we make determines who we really are. Living with integrity feels good, and once we get better at it, our careers and personal lives can develop better.
What does integrity actually mean? Integrity is the ability to live your life depending on your own ethics (道德标准) and morals. ___16___ Besides that, you must also know what you intend to do with your life and what your purpose is.
Here are a few approaches to developing and maintaining integrity!
Identify Your Values Clearly
The first step to developing your integrity is to identify your values. Every person has a set of values that they live by. You must acknowledge them as you go further in life. ___17___
Assess Each and Every Choice
___18___ Practicing integrity means making the right decision no matter what. Some seemingly right decisions that we make in life could be incredibly terrible for some. Honesty and integrity aren’t something that you must practice when it is convenient for you. You must always be like that whatever the circumstances are.
Employ Your Ethics In The Real Situation
___19___ We learn so many great things in childhood, some of which are habits that we follow for our whole life. Practicing integrity is just like that, you would just be practicing your everyday life but with more analysis.
Integrity not merely involves consistency. ___20___ We must not always do what comes naturally to us because it is our nature to stay away from difficulties. We must find the courage within ourselves to face all the difficulties in life, only then will we become successful.

B. Always remember that your choices define you ultimately.
C. Sometimes we need to decide what we want to achieve in life.

One Saturday, a sixteen-year-old boy named Tom was hanging out with his friends at a local cafe. Tom and his friends would usually spend the entire weekend together, before meeting again the following week while in school.
“Tom!” Gina called out. Tom rode on his bike and left the street. Gina tried calling out and chasing after him, but he was too fast. Then, she fainted(晕到) in front of one of her neighbor’s houses.

【答案】范文
When Tom got home late that night, he saw a neighbor at their door. The neighbor, with a look of concern, informed Tom that his mother had fainted and was rushed to the hospital. Tom’s mind went blank as he processed the information, his heart pounding in his chest. A wave of guilt washed over him as he realized what he had done to his mother. He quickly grabbed his bike keys and dashed outside, his bike already waiting for him in the driveway. The cool night air rushed past him, the streetlights casting flickering shadows on his path. Every pedal felt like a race against time as he pushed himself to reach the hospital as soon as possible.
After riding for half an hour Tom arrived at the hospital. Breathless and drenched in sweat, he rushed to the reception desk and asked for his mother’s room. The nurse directed him to a softly lit room where Gina lay. Her face was pale, but her eyes lit up when she saw her son. Tom inched/edged to her bedside, tears streaming down his face. He grabbed her hand and whispered apologies for his recent behavior. Gina, with a weary but forgiving smile, reassured him that she was okay and that they could work through their differences. As they held each other’s hands, sharing words of understanding and love, the tension between them melted away.
