A
A baby pygmy hippopotamus (侏儒河马) named Moo Deng has become a huge Internet star. Videos and pictures online have attracted thousands of people to the zoo. The zoo hopes her fame can help bring attention to the endangered species
Moo Deng was born at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand in July. Moo Deng, whose name means “bouncy pork”, is playful and has a strong personality. And her name seems to match her lively nature. Her keeper, Atthapon Nundee, has been posting videos of Moo Deng on social media since she was very young.
When Moo Deng grows up, she will be much smaller than a common hippopotamus. Pygmy hippopotamuses grow to be about 1 meter tall and close to 2 meters long. They weigh between 160 and 272 kilograms. That may seem heavy, but it’s light compared to a common hippopotamus, which can weigh almost 4,500 kilograms.
Now people keep sharing pictures and videos of her. Companies have used pictures of Moo Deng to make jokes and to sell things from makeup to cakes. Moo Deng is making the zoo popular. Now, thousands of people visit the zoo every day.
The zoo hopes that all the attention can help them raise money. They created special clothes with pictures of Moo Deng. The clothes were soon sold out. They plan to use the money to help raise more endangered animals. The zoo is also taking steps to legally protect Moo Deng’s name and its pictures.
Protecting pygmy hippopotamuses is important. There are only about 2,500 pygmy hippopotamuses left in the wild. The forests in West Africa where pygmy hippopotamuses live are being destroyed. In some cases, pygmy hippopotamuses are also hunted for food. Even inside the safety of the zoo, Moo Deng has faced challenges. Some people have thrown water or other things at her, trying to make her more active. As a result, the zoo has taken steps to protect the young pygmy hippopotamus, like limiting the number of people who can see her at one time and how long the visitors can stay.
1. What is the main reason for Moo Deng’s popularity?
A. Her large size. B. Her unique face.
C. Her videos and photos. D. Her new personality.
2. How does Moo Deng differ from a common hippopotamus?
A. She is stronger. B. She is more playful.
C. She weighs much less. D. She has a different diet.
3. Which is a way taken to protect Moo Deng in the zoo?
A. Moving her to a different room. B. Reducing visitors’ visiting time.
C. Providing her with special food. D. Allowing only children to visit her.

You probably don’t know your choice can make a great difference! According to a study, if people choose more plant-based foods, planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions (排放) linked to the global food supply chains caused by diets (饮食) could drop a lot. Researchers from different countries found that changing to the planetary health diet would help balance the increase in global dietary emissions from currently under-eating populations.
In countries, groups of people who spend more money usually cause more dietary emissions because they eat more red meat and dairy products (乳制品). This study shows that rich countries eat high-emission diets, while many poor countries have diets with lower emissions.
Lead author Dr. Yuli Shan from the University of Birmingham said, “Animal-based products like meat cause more emissions than plant-based products. We should eat less of these high-emission foods, especially in rich countries like Australia and the US, where people often eat too much. This would help improve health and the climate.”
The researchers suggest that giving people reasons to change their diets, like carbon pricing, eco-labeling and making more low-emission foods like plant-based options, can encourage people to eat differently.
A well-designed food environment can reshape people’s eating habits, and better urban planning and infrastructure (基础设施) can help reduce the time and money barriers stopping people from accepting healthier diets.
However, the experts say that in countries like Mongolia, where diets heavily rely on red meat and dairy products due to a traditional lifestyle, diet changes may not be possible, but there is a need to ameliorate national nutritional education.
The researchers say, “Poor people often choose cheaper, high-calorie foods that have less nutritional value. The high cost and low affordability of healthier foods are the main barriers for those people. Therefore, policies should focus on making healthy food more affordable and accessible, especially for low-income groups.”
4. What is the main result of the study mentioned in the text?
A. Plant-based diets cut greenhouse gases.
B Rich countries eat more plant-based foods.
C. Poor countries have higher dietary emissions.
D. Red meat eating has no impact on climate change.
5. Why do richer countries have higher dietary emissions?
A. They waste more food.
B. They have larger populations.
C. They buy more food from other countries.
D. They eat more red meat and dairy products.
6. What does the underlined word “ameliorate” in paragraph 6 mean?
A. Improve. B. Suffer. C. Seek. D. Prevent.

Some time ago, most people would have found it hard to imagine a world where you could send a small picture to someone and it would be a good way to respond. But today, emojis (表情符号) are everywhere in communication, and many people think they are a new form of language.
The first emojis were made in 1999 by a Japanese artist. He was working for a mobile network company. The company asked him to create a set of emojis to use when they launched (发布) their mobile Internet system. Messages on the system were limited to 250 characters, so he thought emojis would be a quick and easy way for people to communicate.
At that time, people were already using “emoticons” in their conversations. These are simple faces made using characters on a keyboard. For example, a colon and a right parenthesis —:)— make a basic smiley face. The artist took this idea and made it better by creating 176 black-and-white pixel images to show things like emotions, weather, and food. This set of emojis is now part of the permanent (永久的) collection at New York City’s Museum of Modern Art.
The artist said he was inspired by symbols used in weather forecasts and Chinese characters. The word emoji is a combination of two Japanese words: e which means picture, and moji which means character. The artist said he never thought emojis would become so popular around the world.
But they did— and it happened quickly. Other companies in Japan started using emojis too, and by the mid-2000s, international companies began including them in their systems. In2010, emojis were officially recognized by the Unicode Consortium, an organization that keeps text standards in software. This meant emojis could be used on any operating system.
Today the Unicode Consortium has approved (认可) over 3,700 emojis, showing different moods, animals, food, flags, and more. And just like any other language, emojis keep growing, with new ones added every year.
7. Why were the first emojis created?
A. To replace emoticons. B. To create a new form of art.
C. To compete with other companies. D. To promote a new mobile Internet system.
8. What inspired the artist to create emojis?
A. Modern art and technology.
B. International travel experiences.
C. Popular movies and television shows.
D. Weather symbols and Chinese characters.
9. When were emojis officially recognized by the Unicode Consortium?
A. In 1999. B. In 2010. C. In 2015. D. In mid-2000s.

A. The Story Of Emojis. B. The Way To Use Emojis.

根据第二段“In countries, groups of people who spend more money usually cause more dietary emissions because they eat more red meat and dairy products (乳制品). This study shows that rich countries eat high-emission diets, while many poor countries have diets with lower emissions.(在一些国家,花钱更多的人群通常会造成更多的饮食排放,因为他们吃更多的红肉和乳制品。这项研究表明,富裕国家的饮食是高排放的,而许多贫穷国家的饮食是低排放的)”可知,富裕国家的饮食排放更高是因为他们吃更多的红肉和奶制品。故选D。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第六段“However, the experts say that in countries like Mongolia, where diets heavily rely on red meat and dairy products due to a traditional lifestyle, diet changes may not be possible, but there is a need to ameliorate national nutritional education.(然而,专家们表示,在蒙古等国家,由于传统的生活方式,饮食严重依赖红肉和乳制品,饮食可能不可能改变,但有必要ameliorate国民营养教育)”可知,在蒙古这样的国家,饮食可能不可能改变,但是改善营养教育是有必要的,推测划线词ameliorate意思是“改善”,和improve意思相近。故选A。
C
Today, the Unicode Consortium has approved (认可) over 3,700 emojis, showing different moods, animals, food, flags, and more.
10. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Story Of Emojis. B. The Way To Use Emojis.
C. The History Of Emoticons. D. The Story About A Japanese Artist.
D 8. D 9. B 10. A

A. Five years ago, I had to make a big decision. At that time, I was working for a small engineering company. However, things were not going very well for the company and it was losing money.
B. We knew the main trouble: The company had lost a lot of customers because it hadn’t developed any new products. Finally, we decided to go for it, so we bought the company. The first few years were very difficult.
C. One day, the boss told us that the company was going out of business. We were all unemployed. At lunchtime, we went to the restaurant as usual. We were all very disappointed.
D. But we worked hard and we had a bit of luck. Things began to improve three years ago. Since then, we have done quite well. Last year, we took on four new people. And so far this year, we have taken on another ten.
E. Of course, we talked about the problem. Then the owner of the restaurant heard our conversation. He said, “Why don’t you buy the company?” At first, we all laughed and then we started to discuss it properly.
________→________→________→________→________
A ②. C ③. E ④. B ⑤. D
【详解】A项“Five years ago, I had to make a big decision. At that time, I was working for a small engineering company. However, things were not going very well for the company and it was losing money.(五年前,我不得不做出一个重大决定。那时,我在一家小工程公司工作。然而,公司的情况并不乐观,一直在亏损。)”中的“five years ago”发生在选项D中的“Things began to improve three years ago.(三年前,情况开始好转。)”
C项“One day, the boss told us that the company was going out of business. We were all unemployed. At lunchtime, we went to the restaurant as usual. We were all very disappointed.(有一天,老板告诉我们公司要倒闭了。我们都失业了。午餐时间,我们像往常一样去了餐馆。大家都非常失望。)”中的“One day, the boss told us that the company was going out of business. We were all unemployed.”与A项中的“However, things were not going very well for the company and it was losing money.(然而,公司的情况并不乐观,一直在亏损。)”
E项“Of course, we talked about the problem. Then the owner of the restaurant heard our conversation. He said, “Why don’t you buy the company?” At first, we all laughed and then we started to discuss it properly. (当然,我们谈论起了这个问题。这时,餐馆老板听到了我们的谈话。他说:“你们为什么不买下这家公司呢?”起初,我们都笑了,然后我们开始认真地讨论起来。)”中的“the problem”指的正是上文提到的“We were all unemployed.”;而选项C中的“At lunchtime, we went to the restaurant as usual.”与选项E中的“the owner of the restaurant”内容上一致。
B项“We knew the main trouble: The company had lost a lot of customers because it hadn’t developed any new products. Finally, we decided to go for it, so we bought the company. The first few years were very difficult.(我们知道了主要的问题所在:公司因为没有开发任何新产品而失去了大量客户。最终,我们决定放手一搏,于是买下了这家公司。头几年非常艰难。)”中“We knew the main trouble”是上文“then we started to discuss it properly”的自然延续。
D项“But we worked hard and we had a bit of luck. Things began to improve three years ago. Since then, we have done quite well. Last year, we took on four new people. And so far this year, we have taken on another ten.(但我们努力工作,也有了一点运气。三年前,情况开始好转。从那以后,我们经营得相当不错。去年,我们雇用了四个人。而今年到目前为止,我们又雇用了另外十个人。)”中的“Things began to improve three years ago.”和选项B中的“The first few years were very difficult.” 而根据“so far this year, we have taken on another ten.”
