National Geographic Explorer Paul Salopek is walking from Africa to the tip of South America. He is following the path our human ancestors took out of Africa about 200,000 years ago.
Salopek has named his journey the Out of Eden Walk. As he walks through different countries, landscapes, and cultures, Salopek is documenting what he sees and hears. And he isn't walking alone. During each part of his walk, Paul is joined by a local guide. Along the way, he meets people from small villages, cities, and country farms. Sometimes, they give him a place to stay for a night or two. Often, his hosts share a little bit about their lives with him.
The Out of Eden Walk is well-named. Besides a few rides on boats or ships, Salopek is walking the entire way. No cars. He doesn’t even ride bikes, though he does use pack animals. An important part of Salopek’s mission is to tell the stories of ordinary people. Walking gives him more time to look around and to talk to the people he encounters. He has spoken to thousands of people since his walk began. As he puts it, “I am in a seven, eight, nine-year-long conversation with total strangers.”
Following a story is not new for Paul Salopek. He is a journalist. He has written for The Atlantic, the Chicago Tribune, National Geographic, and other publications. His works have earned many awards, including two Pulitzer Prizes.
As a journalist, Salopek would often fly into an area to cover a story and then quickly leave again. But he felt he was missing part of the story and wanted to dig deeper. The Out of Eden Walk was born from this desire. Salopek calls it slow journalism. The goal is to deeply explore some of the major news stories of our times by talking to ordinary people who are affected. As Salopek describes it, “It is about slowing down enough to actually inhabit the stories of the day and to get to know the people who are behind the headlines.”
4. What is the Out of Eden Walk?
A. It is the latest penned work of Paul Salopek.
B. It is a ship journey from Africa to the tip of South America.
C It is a toured long walk across the continents taken by Paul Salopek.
D. It is a new fashionable way of travelling through different countries.
5. What does Salopek think of the conversation with strangers?
A. Fruitful. B. Discouraging.
C. Challenging. D. Time-wasted.
6. Why did Paul Salopek start the Out of Eden Walk?
A. To finish his work for the Pulitzer Prizes.
B. To explore the best headlines for the journalism.
C. To unearth the deeper part of the major news stories.
D. To interest the readers in the ancient ordinary people.
7. What do we know about slow journalism?
A. Realistic and worthwhile. B. Influential but informal.
C. Humorous and relaxing. D. Efficient and meaningful.

In the 2006 film, The Devil Wears Prada, Miranda Priestly scolds her unattractive assistant for imagining that high fashion doesn’t affect her. Priestly explains how the deep blue color of the assistant’s sweater descended over the years from fashion shows to department stores and to the bargain shop in which the poor girl doubtless found her garment (衣服).
This top-down conception of the fashion business has gone out of date and is different to “fast fashion” described in Elizabeth Cline’s book Overdressed. In the last decade or so, advances in technology have allowed mass-market labels such as Zara, H& M, and Uniqlo to react to trends and demand more quickly. Quicker turnarounds mean more frequent releases and greater profit. These labels encourage style-conscious consumers to see clothes as disposable (一次性的) — meant to last only a wash or two, although they don’t advertise that — and to renew their wardrobes every few weeks. By offering trendy items at cheap prices, Cline argues, these brands have changed fashion cycles, shaking an industry long accustomed to a seasonal pace.
The victims of this revolution, of course, are not limited to designers. For H&M to offer a $5.95 skirt in all its 2,300-plus stores around the world, it must rely on low-wage overseas labor and use massive amounts of harmful chemicals.
“Mass-produced clothing, like fast food, fills a hunger and need, yet is non-durable and wasteful,” Cline argues. Americans, she finds, buy roughly 20 billion garments a year — about 64 items per person — and no matter how much they give away, this excess leads to waste.
Though several fast-fashion companies have made efforts to reduce their impact on labor and the environment — including H & M, with its Green Conscious Collection Line — Cline believes lasting change can only be effected by the customer. However, vanity (虚荣) is a constant; people won’t start shopping with environmental awareness unless they can’t afford to.
8. What does Priestly criticize her assistant for?
A. Her lack of imagination. B. Her poor bargaining skill.
C. Her action of following high fashion. D. Her lack of knowledge about fashion.
9. What do mass-market labels urge consumers to do according to Cline?
A. Shop for their garments more frequently. B. Resist the influence of advertisements.
C. Create the latest trends in fashion. D. Fight against unnecessary waste.
10. Which of the following can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Vanity has more often been found in fast-fashion companies.
B. The fast-fashion industry ignores environmental protection.
C. Pricing is vital to environment-friendly purchasing.
D People are more interested in unaffordable garments.
11. What’s the tone of the passage towards “fast fashion”?
A. Indifferent. B. Favorable. C. Critical. D. Pessimistic.
D
When you think of the Arctic, you probably imagine an icy land of pure white snow. Many also imagine it as the last really clean place left on Earth. We have polluted the deepest oceans with plastic rubbish, and now, it’s the Arctic’s turn.
German scientists have recently found microplastics (微塑料) in the Arctic’s snow. Microplastics are pieces of plastic that are smaller than 5 millimetres in diameter. Remarkably, the scientists found 1,800 pieces of microplastic per litre of snow.
So how is plastic pollution reaching the Arctic? According to one scientist, “It’s readily apparent that the majority of the microplastic in the snow comes from the air.” They fall off of plastic objects and are moved by the wind, just like dust. They mix with ice in the air and fall to the ground as snow. Finding these plastics in the remote Arctic snow means that they are sure to be found all over the world. In fact, an even higher amount of microplastic was found in the snow around the cities that were studied. Due to the small size of microplastics and their ability to travel through the air, researchers now believe that they may cause significant air pollution. If the microplastics are small enough, they can be inhaled (吸入) and stay in our bodies for a long time, which could have harmful effects in the long term. In fact, some studies have already shown that microplastics may increase the risk of lung cancer, heightening the need for further investigation.
Microplastics have also been found in rivers and oceans around the world. Research has shown that they flow over very long distances, damaging ecosystems along the way. Many people are unaware that microplastics are also released when we wash our clothes. Tiny plastic fibres are released from our clothes into the waste water and then flow into rivers and out to the sea. These fibres are then eaten by sea animals, meaning that when people eat seafood, they could also be eating plastic.
So how bad is microplastic for us? Scientists are unwilling to answer this question for now. We do know that our bodies are safe from taking in large pieces of microplastic, but the microplastic in the air and water is becoming harder and harder to avoid. Fortunately, governments around the world are now realising the importance of reducing plastic pollution, and scientists are working together to find a global solution.
12. Where do the microplastics in the Arctic’s snow come from?
A. From the sky. B. From the ocean.
C. From waste water. D. From sea animals.
13. Why do scientists need to study more about the microplastic in our bodies?
A. Our bodies can take in small microplastics. B. Microplastic may harm our eyesight.
C. Microplastic may lead to lung cancer. D. Earlier studies didn’t succeed.
14. What is to blame for plastic pollution?
A. The weather. B. Microplastics. C. Air pollution. D. Human activities.
15. What might be the best title for this passage?
A. Plastic Pollution Does Harm to Our Health B. Air Pollution Is Becoming Serious
C. Plastic Snow Falls from the Sky D. The Arctic is No Longer Clean

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was last August. We were on vacation, just me, my husband, and our two kids, out for a nice, safe, socially distanced week away. We went to a popular place called Diana's Baths, where the water falls off a series of flat rocks up the mountain. The baths were full of families, so we made our way to one of the upper levels of rock to keep our distance.
Both where we sat and down below, the water fell down and into small pools, where kids in swimsuits were playing water around. I was frightened as I saw my two boys jump between the smooth rocks. I told them to stay away from all those edges. But I soon relaxed, and we were all having fun, laughing in the pools.
Suddenly, I turned and saw my son Wyatt sitting down between two rocks in fast-moving water. I shouted at him to get out. He called back something that I couldn't hear, and then he disappeared over the edge. All I remember from the moments after was screaming, over and over, like a prayer, “Somebody help my son!” I didn't even know what help he needed, because I couldn't force myself to look.
My husband was already jumping down the rocks. I finally looked. Wyatt was sitting up-he was alive. My biggest fear was gone. As I held my younger son, Jed, close, I heard another woman scream. “That child just went over the waterfall!” she shouted at her husband. “We are leaving!” They walked away, never even looking back to see whether our child was OK.
It was about 4 meters from the top of the waterfall to the pool below, which was filled with huge rocks. Wyatt had fallen on his back, straight onto the rocks. That's what Lisa told us. We didn't know her name was Lisa at that point. All we knew was that while everyone else looked on from a distance, too afraid or unbothered to help, Lisa didn't hesitate.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Later, Lisa told me that she was a nurse.

5. What does Salopek think of the conversation with strangers?
A. Fruitful. B. Discouraging.
C. Challenging. D. Time-wasted.
6. Why did Paul Salopek start the Out of Eden Walk?
A. To finish his work for the Pulitzer Prizes.

D. People are more interested in unaffordable garments.
11. What’s the tone of the passage towards “fast fashion”?
A. Indifferent. B. Favorable. C. Critical. D. Pessimistic.
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. C 11. C

【8题详解】

【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“These labels encourage style-conscious consumers to see clothes as disposable (一次性的) — meant to last only a wash or two, although they don’t advertise that — and to renew their wardrobes every few weeks.(这些品牌鼓励注重时尚的消费者把衣服看成是一次性的(即只能洗一两次,尽管他们没有做广告),并且每隔几周就更新一次衣橱)”可知,大众品牌敦促消费者更频繁地购买衣服,故选A。
【10题详解】

C From waste water. D. From sea animals.
13. Why do scientists need to study more about the microplastic in our bodies?
A. Our bodies can take in small microplastics. B. Microplastic may harm our eyesight.
C. Microplastic may lead to lung cancer. D. Earlier studies didn’t succeed.
14. What is to blame for plastic pollution?
A. The weather. B. Microplastics. C. Air pollution. D. Human activities.
15. What might be the best title for this passage?
A. Plastic Pollution Does Harm to Our Health B. Air Pollution Is Becoming Serious
C. Plastic Snow Falls from the Sky D. The Arctic is No Longer Clean
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. D 15. C

第二节(满分 25 分)
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Later, Lisa told me that she was a nurse.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The rescue team finally came.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Later, Lisa told me that she was a nurse. In fact, by the time I climbed down the rocks and my husband pulled Wyatt out of the water, she had already called 911. She put a red, white, and blue towel under Wyatt's head. She told us to keep him still and on his back in case he had injured his bones. I finally had time to ask her name. “Lisa,” she said. “And I'm not leaving you.”
The rescue team finally came. They took Wyatt out of the park to the nearest hospital. Wyatt had three broken bones and a wound in lung—injuries that sound terrible but recover on their own. As soon as I knew that Wyatt was going to be OK, my thoughts fell to Lisa. If she had not stepped up, would someone else have done so? Perhaps. But it was her. She was the one who went toward the unthinkable instead of turning away.
