In a garden filled with flowers and beds bursting with vegetables and herbs, nearly a dozen teenagers are harvesting vegetables for the weekend’s farmers market. Roshawn Little is going into her junior year at Eastern, and has been working in this garden for three years now. During the summer, Little gets paid to work Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a. m. until 2 p.m. with City Blossoms, a nonprofit that brings community gardens to schools in urban areas. She believes that working in the garden has taught her to try all sorts of new things, like eating different kinds of vegetables more often. And she’s taken those healthy behaviors home with her and her eating habits have encouraged her family to buy more fruits and vegetables. City Blossoms is one of many groups across the country teaming up with local communities to build school gardens, like the one at Eastern. It works with schools to create learning gardens and trains teachers on how to use them to get students engaged and boost academics. These gardens are really outdoor classrooms. For example, the gardens can be used for math lessons, like calculating the area of a plant bed or learning the science of how plants grow. For the students, the experience can be a nutritional eye-opener, which has totally changed their perceptions of where food comes from, and what it takes to produce food. Partner schools have also seen a 12 to 15 percent increase in the number of students passing standardized tests and 94 percent of teachers reported seeing increased engagement from their students, according to an independent evaluation conducted by PEER Associates. 14. What does Roshawn Little think of the summer outdoor activity? A. It is a good way to earn pocket money. B. It has improved her family relationship. C. It contributes to her healthy eating habit. D. It is helpful to her academic performance. 15. What is the purpose of the school gardens? A. To provide a creative way of learning. B. To-promote teachers1 teaching skills. C To get students interested in science. D. To invite students to care for plants. 16. What does the last paragraph focus on about the project of City Blossoms? A. Its strategies. B. Its outcomes. C. Its operations. D. Its participants. 17. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. City Blossoms: Team up with Local Community Teachers B. Happy Holiday, Sweet memory: How Kids Enjoy the Harvest C. Outdoor Classrooms: Get out for the Weekend’s Farmers Market D. Healthy Eaters, Strong Minds: What School Gardens Teach Kids C Today’s word, pan, takes us back to the days of the gold rush in California. On January 24th, 1848, a man named James Wilson Marshall discovered gold in California. The news spread quickly. Thousands rushed west. They traveled on foot, on horseback and by boat to reach the gold fields. By 1849, the great gold rush was on. Towns and cities grew overnight. Throughout California — in the mountains, along the streams and rivers — thousands of people searched for gold. Some found areas of mountain rock thick with gold. These men got rich. But such areas were few and quickly claimed by the first men to find them. Others searched for gold in the rivers coming down the mountains. They were after pieces of gold that the rains had washed down from above. The only way to find this gold was by panning. First a gold miner put dirt in a metal pan and added water. Then he shook the pan so that the water would wash the dirt. Slowly, he poured the water out of the pan. If he was a lucky miner, pieces of gold would remain. Across the nation, newspapers carried stories of the gold being found. Each one hoped that the place he claimed panned out well — had some gold. For many, gold mining did not pan out. For a few, it panned out well. But in time, huge machines were built that could wash many tons of dirt at a time. Panning died out. The word, however, remained in the language. Today, Americans still say, “It panned out well,” when something they have done pleases them. A business, a discovery, a simple event pans out well if it is successful. Unhappily, sometimes things do not pan out. In recent years, the word pan has taken on another meaning. Today, it also means to criticize. How it got this meaning is hard to discover. But the job of a critic is to sometimes pan the work of a writer, artist or singer. 18. Why did so many people flood to California in 1848? A. Because towns and cities there developed quickly. B. Because the mountains in California were a great place for travel. C. Because they wanted to get rich by looking for gold. D. Because the land of California was fertile at that time. 19. Panning died out because ______. A. huge machines were designed to wash dirt more effectively B. there was no gold for people to find C. it couldn’t help to find gold D. it would pollute the rivers and was banned 20. The underlined part “It panned out well” in Paragraph 7 has the same meaning as “______”. A. Everything turned out well B. Nothing could be worse C. It’s not the case D. It’s a pity 21. What is the purpose of this passage? A. To tell us some stories about the gold rush. B. To introduce the word “pan” in American English. C. To teach us how to look for gold in rivers. D. To introduce the history of the gold rush in California. D Years of research show that when a native English speaker enters a conversation among nonnative speakers, understanding goes down.Communication specialist Heather Hansen tells us that's because the native speaker doesn't know how to do what nonnative speakers do naturally: speak in ways that are understandable to everyone, using simple words and expressions. They unconsciously use unnecessarily confusing vocabulary, which makes language less understandable. Ting Gong grew up in Shanghai and moved to the U.S.in her 20s. She ran up against this problem of confusing vocabulary at the doctor's one day. "The receptionist(接待员)gave me a form and asked me to write down my complaints,”she said.“I told her that I did not have any complaint, and she looked impatient and then she asked me to write down anything that I could think of.” “I only realized that‘complaints' here refers to symptoms I have after I spoke to my husband when I got home. At the doctor's I actually wrote down 'the receptionist was not friendly' as one of my complaints." So what can we do to improve communication between native and nonnative English speakers? Hansen says the responsibility shouldn't be on nonnative speakers but rather on native English speakers. Take a page out of nonnative speakers' book, says Hansen, by changing your English to be more inclusive. That means no more confusing expressions. Small changes like this might allow native speakers to join in conversations with nonnative speakers. Joseph Issam Harb, who was raised in the United States and Abu Dhabi United Arab Emirates, said,"I am still learning about English from nonnative speakers. "In emails, I've discovered an expression commonly used by some nonnative speakers 'please do the needful,' "Harb said."For years I have been interested in this expression and its use in formal work environment emails." Discovering it and wondering about the origins of the expression, which means "please do what needs to be done,"has been an enjoyable thing for Harb. 22. What makes communication between native and nonnative speakers less smooth according to Hansen? A. The speed of native speakers' talk. B. Nonnative speakers' bad pronunciation. C. The difference between speakers' cultures. D. Native speakers' use of confusing expressions. 23. Why did Gong reply that she did not have any complaint? A. She had difficulty expressing herself in English. B. She wanted to get treatment as soon as possible. C. She failed to understand what the receptionist had meant. D. She feared that the receptionist would become impatient. 24 What does Hansen suggest native English speakers do? A. Read books by nonnative English writers. B. Join in more nonnative speakers' conversations. C. Make no comment about nonnative speakers' English. D. Use expressions understandable to nonnative speakers. 25. What did Harb say about nonnative English? A. It is very interesting. B. It should be corrected. C. It sounds strange and funny. D. It can be used in informal situations. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Making Peace with Your Parents As a teen, you’re going through big changes physically and mentally. Your interests are increasing. ___26___ Here is the challenge: Kids need to explore the world in new ways, and parents need to protect them from the dangers that are all out in that world. These conflicts can easily set off fireworks in otherwise calm houses. Sometimes conflicts can’t be avoided. But by paying attention to the building blocks of successful relationships, you can work towards making home a happy and healthy place for you and your parents. For example, try to find a time to talk when your parents are not angry, tired, distracted or hungry. A good time to talk is when you’re all relaxed. Timing is everything. If the conversation begins to turn into an argument, you’d better calmly and coolly ask to stop the conversation for now. ___27___ Listen to what your parents are saying, and repeat it back to them. This shows them that you’re listening. ___28___ Respect is the building block of good communication. People who respect each other and care about each others’ feelings can disagree without getting things ugly. ___29___ How do you build trust? Trust comes by actually doing what you say you’re going to do. Some teens find that doing fun activities with their parents can improve their relationships. Sometimes we forget that parents are more than rule-maker—they’re interesting people who like to watch movies and go shopping—just like their teenagers! What do you do if you are trying your best, but your relationship with your parents continues to be rocky? ___30___ You can find supportive adults, such as a teacher or a coach, who can lend an ear. Remember you can only change your own behavior. Your parents are the only ones who can change theirs. A. You may consider seeking outside help. B. And then you’ll be able to accept what your parents say. C. You can pick it up again when everyone’s more relaxed. D. Faced with the challenge children don’t know what to do. E. 【答案】18. C 19. A 20. A 21. B 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要围绕“pan”这个词的起源和演变进行说明,特别是它与加利福尼亚淘金热的历史联系,以及该词在现代语境下所获得的新含义。 【18题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第二段“On January 24th, 1848, a man named James Wilson Marshall discovered gold in California. The news spread quickly. Thousands rushed west. They traveled on foot, on horseback and by boat to reach the gold fields. By 1849, the great gold rush was on. Towns and cities grew overnight. Throughout California — in the mountains, along the streams and rivers — thousands of people searched for gold.(1848年1月24日,一位名叫James Wilson Marshall的人在加利福尼亚发现了黄金。 根据文章第六段“For many, gold mining did not pan out. Panning died out.(对许多人来说,淘金并没有成功。只有少数人淘金成功。但随着时间推移,建造出了能够一次清洗数吨泥土的大型机器。淘金热逐渐消亡。)”可知,随着时间的推移,人们建造了能够一次清洗许多吨泥土的巨大机器,因此淘金热逐渐消失。故选A。 【20题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线句子下文“when something they have done pleases them(当美国人做的某件事令他们满意时)”可推测,该短语表示事情进展顺利。选项A“Everything turned out well(一切进展顺利)”与此相符。故选A。 【21题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第一段“Today’s word, pan, takes us back to the days of the gold rush in California.(今天的单词是“pan”,它让我们回想起加利福尼亚淘金热的日子。)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要介绍了“pan”这个词的起源和演变,特别是在淘金热中的使用以及现代英语中的含义,因此文章的目的是介绍“pan”这个词在美国英语中的用法。故选B。 D Years of research show that when a native English speaker enters a conversation among nonnative speakers, understanding goes down.Communication specialist Heather Hansen tells us that's because the native speaker doesn't know how to do what nonnative speakers do naturally: speak in ways that are understandable to everyone, using simple words and expressions. 24. What does Hansen suggest native English speakers do? 【答案】22. D 23. C 24. D 25. A 【解析】 【导语】本文为说明文,主要讲述了当母语为英语的人与母语为非英语的人进行对话时,理解力就会下降,以及如何改善这种现象。 【22题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段中“Communication specialist Heather Hansen tells us that's because the native speaker doesn't know how to do what nonnative speakers do naturally: speak in ways that are understandable to everyone, using simple words and expressions. They unconsciously use unnecessarily confusing vocabulary, which makes language less understandable(沟通专家希瑟·汉森告诉我们,这是因为母语人士不知道如何自然地做非母语人士所做的事情:用简单的词语和表达,以每个人都能理解的方式说话。他们无意识地使用不必要的混淆词汇,这使得语言难以理解)”可知,D选项“Native speakers' use of confusing expressions(母语人士使用令人困惑的表达)”与之相符,故选D项。 【23题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段第一句“I only realized that‘complaints' here refers to symptoms I have after I spoke to my husband when I got home(当我回到家和丈夫交谈时才意识到这里的complaints指的是我的症状)”可知,当时Gong没有明白complaints的含义,故选C项。 【24题详解】 细节理解题。根据第五段中“Take a page out of nonnative speakers' book, says Hansen, by changing your English to be more inclusive. That means no more confusing expressions. Small changes like this might allow native speakers to join in conversations with nonnative speakers(汉森说,从非母语人士的书中抽出一页,把你的英语改得更具包容性。这意味着不再有令人困惑的表达。像这样的小变化可能会让母语人士加入到与非母语人士的对话中)”可知,Hansen建议使用非母语人士可以理解的表达,故选D项。 【25题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段的最后一句“Discovering it and wondering about the origins of the expression, which means "please do what needs to be done,"has been an enjoyable thing for Harb(发现它并想知道这个表达的起源,意思是“请做需要做的事”,这对哈布来说是一件令人愉快的事情)”可知,对于Harb而言,非母语人士使用的短语很有趣,故选A项。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Making Peace with Your Parents As a teen, you’re going through big changes physically and mentally.
