I loved drawing pictures. While my children were still young, I started illustrating books for a group. Once my kids got older, I decided to take the leap and work at starting my own business. I decided to focus on fine art paintings.
Sad to say, it took me almost two years to have the courage to present my work to a gallery. When I finally did it, the gallery immediately started selling my work and I soon drove to the state office to do the necessary paperwork for a business.
I didn’t understand how an artist could run his own business and there weren’t many resources to help people like me get started at the time. All I could find were a handful of books. So, to get my business off the ground I went to galleries, looked through them, and asked myself, “Am I a good fit for this place?” If they were interested in my work, I would share my paintings with them.
When I started showing my work in galleries, I was initially very frightened. There were some amazing artists that I put on a pedestal (奉为完人). I felt I could never attain the position. I eventually became friends with one of the top artists at the first local gallery I got into. I remember visiting with him one day and a comment he made impacted me. As we were talking about showing our works, meeting buyers, and the prices of our art, he said to me, “I can’t even afford my own art.” He laughed it off but it made me think to myself he was just a regular guy and I was not so different. This gave me the confidence I needed to keep on trying, and suddenly everything seemed a lot less frightening.
Since that time, I’ve had many galleries representing me. I wear so many hats running my business, and not all are the perfect fit, but that’s okay!

27. What is the best title for the text?
A. How I became a famous artist. B. Why galleries are important to me.

German businesses are increasingly turning to robots to fill jobs as the country faces a severe labor shortage. The situation left about 1.7 million jobs unfilled across Germany in June, official data showed. The country’s Chambers of Commerce and Industry has estimated that half of German businesses are currently struggling to fill positions. Germany is Europe’s largest economy.
One of the country’s biggest labor issues is the large number of people retiring from the so-called Baby Boomer generation. The nation’s birth rate has also been going down for years. Economic experts say it is difficult to substitute for these retiring workers. Many younger workers do not want to take jobs seen as dirty and harmful to their health.
The job shortage situation is currently reducing growth in Germany by about $109 billion a year, official estimates suggest. The Federal Employment Agency predicts the number of available workers will shrink by 7 million people by 2035.
The problem is affecting large, medium and small businesses across the country. Some have decided to replace retiring workers with robotic systems. “With similar issues affecting other developed economies, robotic and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies will continue to expand,” said Nela Richardson. She is the chief economist at financial provider ADP. “In the long term, all those innovations are a game-changer for the world of work. Everybody will do their job differently,” Richardson told Reuters.
Heavy investment in automation by carmakers and other major industrial companies has made Germany the world’s fourth-largest market for robots — the largest in Europe. But as robots become less costly and easier to operate, even smaller companies are also using them.
“Robots enable the survival of companies that see their future at risk due to staff shortages,” said Ralf Winkelmann, director of FANUC Germany. Even workers and trade unions, which in the past were fearful of job losses linked to robots, have taken an increasingly favorable position. A public opinion study published in June by a robots marketplace organization found that nearly half of German employees saw robots as a help to the labor shortage.
28. What do we know about the German economy?
A German businesses are experiencing their hardest time.
B. Several factors contribute to the severe labor shortage.
C. It is suffering from the lack of labor force.
D. It has achieved a steady growth recently.
29. What does the underlined part “substitute for” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Award. B. Find. C. Pay. D. Replace.
30. What does Nela Richardson think of the future of robots for work?
A. It is quite hopeless. B. It is promising. C. It is well planned. D. It is uncertain.
31. What did the public opinion study suggest?
A. About half of German workers welcomed the adoption of robots.
B. Robots were the solution to Germany’s labor shortage.
C. German workers were concerned about their future.
D. Trade unions feared losing their jobs.

Water, the source of life, is becoming increasingly scarce (不足的) as the world’s population grows and climate change intensifies. According to the United Nations, 2.3 billion people — more than one in four — live in a water-stressed country. And 4 billion people face severe water scarcity for at least one month a year.
In Europe, where global warming is already causing more frequent and severe droughts, scientists and businesses are developing new methods to generate fresh water from the air as well as the sea. The push is also driven by pollutants in underground water and the environmental cost of bottled water.
GENAQ is a Spanish company that makes devices known as atmospheric water generators. By condensing (冷凝) humidity (湿度) in the air into usable water, such generators can help create much-needed supplies. While GENAQ has been developing atmospheric water generators since 2008 and has customers in 60 countries, so far it has served mainly emergency services and industrial users. Recently, the company developed a version designed for people at home. These new generators can be attached to houses and create fresh water for their residents.
GENAQ wants to sell three versions of the product, ranging in amount from 20 litres a day to 200 litres and in size, from a small kitchen appliance to a version that looks like an office water cooler. Anticipated prices range from €2,500 for the smallest version to €14,500 for the biggest.
The device takes air and filters (过滤) it, ensuring there are no pollutants. First, air is cooled to a point where water condenses. Then the water is strictly filtered, minerals are added, and ultraviolet light (紫外线) is used to prevent bacteria forming. GENAQ has found a way to greatly cut the amount of energy used in the process — 150% less — and the average cost of portable water fell by more than 80%.
GENAQ is now aiming to supply everyday families with atmospheric water generators. In the coming months, it plans to expand in European countries such as Spain, France and Germany where bottled-water consumption is high. A following step is to break into the worldwide consumer market.
32 What does the author want to show in paragraph 1?
A. Water shortages will be the world’s biggest problem.
B. Climate change contributes to the water shortages.
C. Water is of great importance to life.
D. Water problem is getting worse.
33. What do we know about the generators of GENAQ?
A. They can provide residents with water relief in daily life.
B. They are used to purify fresh water for residents.
C. They remove pollutants in underground water.
D. They produce water from the sea.
34. What does GENAQ expect to do?
A. Save the bottled-water business. B. Supply the whole world with household water generators.
C. Supply high quality water. D. Solve the water problem in the world.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Can we generate water from the air? B. How do we live with water generators?

One day, 8-year-old Mary and her 10-year-old sister, Jane, had to go to a beauty salon (美容院) on Clinton Street to have their hair cut. Mary’s dad asked them to reach there by themselves on the public bus. Mary and Jane had a 5:00 appointment (预约). Their dad couldn’t go with them because he worked until 6:00 pm.
Their dad told Mary to wait outside the school at 4:30 pm for Jane so they could take the bus to the beauty salon together. Then he would pick them up at the salon after he got off work. Mary was nervous, thinking, “What if someone tries to follow us? What if we miss the stop? I have never ridden the bus without my dad before.” Her dad took a look at her and said, “You’ll be just fine. Listen to your sister and help her look out for your stop.” Then he gave Jane some money and went off to work.
All day at school, Mary kept looking at the clock, afraid of the end of the school day. On the other hand, Mary’s dad was also nervous. The whole time in his office he kept looking at the clock, thinking about his daughters. He actually left work at 4:00 pm that day. But after reaching Mary’s school, he considered it a good chance for them to overcome fear in life. He decided to stay in his car to see whether his girls could get on the bus safely.
When it was 4:30 pm, Mary went to the school gate and waited for Jane. Jane got there in a few minutes, and they walked quietly to the bus stop.
24. How did the author feel after her first show according to paragraph 2?
A. Encouraged. B. Doubtful. C. Confused. D. Awkward.

26. How did the top artist’s words affect the author?
A. She gained a sense of achievement. B. She believed that she would do well.
C. She tackled problems efficiently. D. She learned new drawing skills.

A. German businesses are experiencing their hardest time.
【答案】28. C 29. D 30. B 31. A

32. What does the author want to show in paragraph 1?

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A few high school teenagers and a woman stood at the bus stop. Jane asked the woman if the bus stopping there was the Number 2 heading toward Clinton Street.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。
The woman nodded her head and said with a smile, “Yes.”

After getting off the bus, Jane took Mary’s hand and led her across the busy street to the beauty salon.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 The woman nodded her head and said with a smile, “Yes.” Mary could tell that Jane relaxed a little and they boarded the bus. They stood all the way so that they could look out of the windows for their Clinton Street stop. Their father followed the bus to make sure the girls got off at the right stop. When they were almost there, the woman who spoke to Jane earlier tapped her on the shoulder and told her that their stop was next. They thanked the woman.
After getting off the bus, Jane took Mary’s hand and led her across the busy street to the beauty salon. Their dad arrived shortly after they sat down. He said he was proud of them and that he wanted to teach them a lesson — life isn’t lived without fear; instead, it’s the fear that pushes a person to be strong. Hearing that, Mary and Jane smiled back. They sat in the salon’s chairs and forgot how nervous they had been — especially Mary. They both grew more confident and daring.
