On Nov 20 2024, 700 meters deep under the green hills of Kaiping in Jiangmen, Guangdong, the construction of a 35.4-meter wide ball-shaped detector was completed. This is Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO, 江门中微子实验室). Giant as it is, it’s designed to observe one of the tiniest and lightest forms of matter in the universe – the neutrino.
Neutrinos are tiny particles (粒子) smaller than atoms (原子). The birth of neutrinos is often related to extreme events in the universe, such as the Big Bang. This is because high-energy neutrinos mainly come about between crashes with cosmic rays (宇宙射线) and dust or gas.
They have no electric charge (电荷), so they can pass through matter without being stopped or slowed down. This makes them very hard to detect and study. Every second, 10 trillion neutrinos pass through your body without leaving any sign, which is why they are called “ghost particles”.
Scientists have thus built JUNO to catch these “shy” particles. The detector’s 45,000 “eyes” receive light signals (信号), turn them into electrical signals, amplify (放大) them by a factor of 10 million and send them to a computer. Scientists then use this data to study neutrinos.
Although neutrinos have existed since the early universe, it wasn’t until 1930 that Austrian scientist Wolfgang Pauli suggested their existence to explain missing energy in radioactive decay (放射性衰变). He said that this missing energy was carried away by an undetected particle, which he named the neutrino.
Neutrino research helps us understand how the universe began and changed over time, as well as what the natural laws are like, opening the door for many possibilities. With these laws, we can gradually turn scientific discoveries into technologies, which can benefit our lives. In a few years, neutrinos may change the world like Newton’s discovery of universal gravitation (万有引力) did.
1. What do we know about JUNO?
A. It is about 700 square meters. B. It will soon be put into use.
C. It is cube-shaped. D. It lies deep underground.
2. Why are neutrinos called “ghost particles”?
A. They can only be seen in the dark.
B. They can pass through matter unnoticed.
C. They are associated with extreme events.
D. They are from crashes with cosmic rays and dust.
3. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. The discovery of neutrinos. B. The functions of neutrinos.
C. The research of the early universe. D. The importance of neutrino research.
4. What do scientists suggest about the future of neutrino research?

B. It will help us find new sources of energy.
C. It could lead to groundbreaking technologies.
D. It may prove some existing theories wrong.
5.What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The difficulty in detecting neutrinos.
B. The importance of neutrino research.

Fish babies in space?! In a space study on zebrafish (斑马鱼), Chinese scientists have set a new record .They successfully got four zebrafish to live and grow in a closed water world.
The zebrafish went to China’s space station on the Shenzhou XVIII spaceship on April 25 2024. Since then, they have been living in a closed fish tank with some plants. The fish grew up and had babies in 43 days.
In their special closed environment, the plants made air for the fish and the fish’s waste gave the plants food. The scientists gave the fish food through a special needle.
Such a closed-loop ecosystem (封闭生态系统) is important for future studies in space. It means that plants and animals can live in space more simply and easily.
The scientists also found that the zebrafish acted differently than on Earth. For example, they often swam on their back. The low gravity in space is a big reason. On Earth, gravity pulls everything to Earth’s center, and animals can find their way easily. Gravity also makes their bodies work harder and become stronger, said The Conversation.
Humans and zebrafish share 70 percent of the same genes. So the new finding will help scientists better understand human health.

A. Scientists from different countries did it together.
B. The zebrafish gave birth to four babies at last.
C. It took place in a closed environment.
D. It lasted for less than one month.
2. Which picture should be in the circle to show the ecosystem in the fish tank?
A B C D
3. What was the result of the low gravity in space?
A. Human bodies got stronger. B. Animals could easily find way.
C. The zebrafish swam upside down. D. The zebrafish swam in the same direction.
4. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The plan for studying human genes. B. The findings of the space study.
C. Further studies on zebrafish. D. The importance of the study.

The winners of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Science have been announced, which recognizes scientists who have made outstanding contributions to the development of fields such as protein and artificial intelligence. They have made recognized contributions in physics, chemistry, and medicine.
Chemistry
The Chemistry prize went to US scientists David Baker and John Jumper, along with British computer scientist Demis Hassabis. Baker built new kinds of proteins (蛋白质), while Jumper and Hassabis made an AI model called AlphaFold2 to work out hard protein structures (结构). It has been very difficult for scientists to work out how proteins fold into 3D shapes that decide their function (功能). However, AlphaFold2 can perfectly work out the 3D shapes of nearly all known proteins. It may also help with new drug (药物) development.
Physics
US scientist John Hopfield and British-Canadian Geoffrey Hinton won the 2024 Nobel Prize in physics for helping lead the way for the development of AI. In 1982, Hopfield made a network (网络) that helps computers store and recall patterns. This is like how our brains remember things. A year later, Hinton made the Boltzmann machine. It allows computers to learn on their own to find patterns, like spotting (发现) different things in pictures. According to Ellen Moons, chair of the Nobel Committee for Physics, their work has already been of the greatest benefit since artificial neural networks (人工神经网络) are being widely used.
Physiology or medicine
US scientists Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun discovered how genes (基因) are controlled in cells (细胞). Although all cells in our bodies have the same genes, different types, like muscle (肌肉) and nerve (神经) cells, work in different ways. They found out that tiny helpers called microRNAs help control which genes are active in cells. This discovery is important for understanding how things develop and function.
1. David Baker received the Nobel Prize in chemistry for _______.
A. developing the AI model AlphaFold2
B. building new kinds of proteins
C. folding proteins into 3D shapes
D. researching new drugs
2. What can the Boltzmann machine do?

1. What do we know about the space study?

Classics are the treasure of the literary (文学) world. For years, people have read them to learn more. But now, more people love “watching” these classics in videos.
According to a 2023 report released by the Chinese short-video platform Douyin, the views for book-related videos jumped by 65.17 percent year-on-year.
“There are some classics that I am not interested in but required to read,” said 14-year-old He Liyan from Jiangsu. “So I usually watch a video about the book to find some interesting stories which can keep me reading.”
Some people also find classic books really long and hard to understand, so they go to vloggers’ explanations .
“The vloggers also add personal opinions to their explanations, making the book easier to understand,” added He.
A Dream of Red Mansions (《红楼梦》) is famous for showing Chinese society with interesting characters and a poetic writing style. It talks about family, society and human nature. These things can be fun to watch but boring and difficult to read.
“There are so many characters in the novel, which confused me a lot,” said 12-year-old Shao Xinyan from Hubei. “The mind maps shown in the videos make their relationships clearer.”
While reading with videos helps many people, some express different opinions and worries.
For Zhang Boren, a 13-year-old from Beijing, reading is a journey about forming a personal relationship with the text, not just learning information. “Books can let me imagine. Although videos can help a lot, they can’t show every part of a well-made story,” he said.
Eighteen-year-old Wang Hongjie from Sichuan agreed, saying, “It may decrease readers’ ability to read independently and think deeply.”
1. According to Douyin, the views for book-related videos _____.
A. increased greatly B. decreased rapidly
C. remained the same D. went up and down
2. How do book-related videos help He Liyan?
A. By explaining classics with pictures.
B. By summarizing books in a few words.
C. By showing mind maps of some classics.
D. By increasing his interest in the books.
3. What did Shao Xinyan learn about A Dream of Red Mansions through videos?
A. She learned about some experts’ opinions.
B. She better understood the character relationships.
C. She understood the book’s poetic writing style.
D. She got to know about the book’s writing background.
4. What is the main worry about book-related videos?
A. They waste readers’ time by just summarizing the books.
B. They stop readers from understanding the books by themselves.
C. They give too much unnecessary information to viewers.
D. The vloggers’ incorrect opinions could mislead viewers.
