No two clouds are 3 alike. We can see the different kinds of clouds and watch them for the signs of changing weather. To forecast(预报)the weather, there are 4 things about clouds you should pay attention to: the movement and the colour. As a rule, the higher the clouds are, the better the weather will be. Cumulus clouds(积云)are 6 sign of good weather. We often see these clouds 7 warm summer days. Clouds can tell us 8 a storm is on the way. If the thick, fluffy(轻软状的)cumulus clouds get bigger early in the day, then you know it will rain. If a sudden, cool and dark thunder cloud appears, then a 9 is about to break out.
Colours in the sky tell us about the weather, too. A golden ring around the Moon warns us that a storm is on the way. A watery yellow sunset is a sign that rain may be near. After an 18-month-long journey, a group of wild Asian elephants are getting close to their home. Before that, they have been roaming around southwest China's Yunnan province.
At about 8 p.m. Sunday, August 8th, 2021, those elephants crossed the Yuanjiang River. They used the road bridge, because the water level is too high during the rainy season. It took them three minutes to cross the river. To guide them, people did a lot of work. And now they're much closer to their home.
The elephants left the Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, a nature reserve, near the city of Pu’er in March of 2020. They walked more than 500 km north and even reached the outside of Kunming, the capital city of Yunnan province in early June, before turning back to the south. Along the way, two of the elephants returned home and some of the younger elephants have grown up a lot during their journey.
These elephants became a hot topic online after they left their home. They are one of China's highly protected animals. To keep them safe, the local government has done a lot of work. Luckily, no animals or humans have been hurt in the journey.

No one can change the weather. Nobody can control the weather. But if we read correctly the signs around us, we can tell how the weather will be. This way of telling what the weather will be like on the following day or two is called weather forecasting.
For many centuries and in all countries, people have studied the weather and tried to make weather forecasting. Rings around the sun are a sign of coming rain. Many people feel their joints(关节)hurt in their bones if wet weather is coming. Some birds fly high if fine weather is coming, but they fly near the ground if rainy or stormy weather is on the way. If you see a rainbow(彩虹)during rainy weather, this is a sign that the weather will become clear and fine.Such rainbows come in the evening. If the stars twinkle(闪烁)clearly at night, then fine weather will continue. If a fog appears in the morning just above a river, then the following day will be warm. If the sunset is mostly red in colour, then the following day will be fine. If a rainbow appears in the morning, rainy weather will probably come.
Most of the above sayings have been made by the people who have used their eyes and brains(大脑)to make weather forecasting.
( )4. According to the passage, people's joints ache

C. because they are ill D. because of the insects
( )5. That the birds fly high and the stars twinkle clearly is a sign that the weather will ___________.

(One day, Gulliver was caught in a storm and his ship hit a rock, then damaged. He was washed to the beach by sea wave. He walked and walked to find a city, but he was too tired and felt asleep. When he woke up, he found himself in Lilliput and a lot of tiny people were around him.)
The Emperor spoke in a high voice but I could hear all the words clearly. His followers and all the ladies wore rich and beautiful clothes. The ground where they were standing looked like gold and silver cloth.
His Majesty and I often spoke to each other but neither of us understood a single word. I tried words from many languages- Dutch, French, Spanish, Italian and Latin. No one could understand my words, not even the cleverest of the Emperor's followers.
After about two hours the Emperor left. His wife, children and their servants also went. There were strong guards around me. This was to stop the crowd of people from hurting me.
An officer told the guards to hold six men who made me angry. These men were given to me and I had to choose their punishment. I put five of them in my pocket. Then I pretended(假装)to eat the sixth man.
The poor man screamed terribly. The guards were worried when they saw my knife in my hand. Was I going to cut up the man? But I only cut the binding (捆绑物)round his hands. Then I put him on his feet and let him go. I lifted the other five men out of my pocket and put them gently on the ground too.
The people and the soldiers were very pleased with my great kindness. They told the Emperor about it immediately. The Emperor ordered his men to make a bed for me and they had to join six hundred of their little beds together to make one bed for me.
At the same time the Emperor asked all his advisers for their advice on how to deal with me. They were very worried. If my binding was cut, I might be dangerous. I was eating so much food that soon all the people would be very hungry. The farmers could not grow enough food to feed all of us.
The wise men thought that they should kill me. But they would not be able to bury(埋葬)me. My dead body would smell. This might cause much illness all over the country.

D. His dead body would smell and cause much illness in their country.

There are all kinds of weather in the world. Weather affects our lives all the time. It's very important for us to know about it. Now, let me introduce hurricanes.
The weather is very wild. It is a hurricane. It has very strong winds and lots of rain. Hurricanes form over the sea. Warm, wet air rises up from the sea. This air forms clouds. Lots of heat comes from these clouds. This can cause thunderstorms, with heavy rain and strong winds. "If winds reach 120 kilometres per hour(74. 6 mph), a hurricane forms,”say experts. Hurricanes are wide storms. They can spread from one town to another 800 km away.
The strong winds in a hurricane blow round and round. The centre of a hurricane is called the eye. The winds are not strong there.
The heavy rain during a hurricane can cause floods. So can the strong wind. It makes big waves in the sea. The waves crash onto the land and cause floods.
( )10. Which of the following is NOT TRUE about a hurricane?
A. It has very strong winds. B. It has a lot of rain.

Owls are active mainly at night. They hunt when it's dark. Most of us go for our work and study in the daytime. We almost never see owls, 1 Our love for owls has a long history, and it's in all cultures. No matter how far you go back, there is always some type of art work or story that includes an owl. These days, we can find owls on company logos, in children's books, etc. 2
Some bird researchers believe owls' popularity lies largely in their “cool” looks. 3 Unlike human eyes, their eyes are cylindrical(圆筒状的). So owls cannot roll their eyes. Their heads have to do most of the rolling-around work. It's also for this reason that owls can turn their heads almost around on their necks.
4 Their ears are lopsided(不平衡)-the left ear is a little higher than the right ear. A noise goes in one ear before it arrives in the other. This helps owls tell which direction a sound is coming from. To make their sense of hearing even better, the owl's whole face acts like a satellite dish(圆盘式卫星接收器)for sound waves. Their beaks are very small so that they won't get in the way.
Thanks to such unusual looks and abilities, 5 For a long time, people made up lots of myths about them. Some have described owls as the goddess of wisdom. Some say owls are witches in disguise. These stories have made more people become interested in owls and made them become more popular!
A. So what makes owls so popular?
B. Owls like to hunt food according to the environment.
C. but many of us like these night birds very much.
D. Owls also use sound to hunt.
E. In order to see clearly in the dark, owls have evolved to have large eyes.
F. owls became known as strange and wonderful animals.
G. Most of people prefer birds in the daytime to birds at night.
