During his lifetime, he planted the seeds for China’s complete change by teaching thousands of people. Today, he is thought to be one of the world’s greatest teachers. Confucius grew up in a poor family. As he grew up, Confucius worked to help his mother earn money. When he wasn’t working, he would read. His favorite thing to do was to learn. His mother saw this and did her best to help him learn. One day, rich families noticed how smart he was and offered him jobs counting their money and keeping track of their crops. Confucius did this until he was 30 years old, but he always wanted to do more. He didn’t like the way rulers treated their people. He wanted to find a way to help people who were less fortunate than he was. Later, he founded the philosophy “Confucianism”. Confucianism states that by educating yourself, loving your family, and respecting tradition you could become a better person. Confucius believed a person could achieve these things by practicing self-discipline (自 律). For the rest of his life, Confucius traveled and taught the people of China about self-discipline and the importance of education. He even opened China’s first school that taught both the poor and the wealthy as equals. Although he became very famous among China’s lower classes, the rulers of China never accepted his teachings. Eventually, his philosophy of self-discipline helped China unite under one ruler and finally find peace. Today, Confucius is celebrated all over the world for his philosophy of education, equality, and peace over war, money, and injustice. 4. What can we know about Confucius from the passage? A. He was born in a politician family. B. He was once a farmer guiding people farming. C. He once acted as a math teacher. D. He devoted himself to social development. 5. Why did rich families give him jobs? A. He likes counting money. B. He enjoyed harvesting crops. C. He was very clever. D. He disliked rulers. 6. Which is very important to keep peace according to the author? A. Respect. B. Self-confidence. C. Self-discipline. D. Equality. 7. What is the writer’s attitude towards Confucianism? A. Supportive (支持的). B. Doubtful (怀疑的). C. Disappointed. D. Hopeful. 4. D 5. C 6. C 7. Today, Confucius is celebrated all over the world for his philosophy of education, equality, and peace over war, money, and injustice.(最终,他的自律哲学帮助中国统一在一个统治者之下,并最终找到了和平。 A。 C “You should get a cat, ”my therapist(治疗专家)said. “A cat?” I couldn’t even look after myself. . I took a deep breath and carefully considered the idea of welcoming a feline (猫科的)friend into my life. This seemed like too easy a fix for the fact that I couldn’t leave the house without bursting into tears. When my partner and I found Cinnamon, her adoption profile made her out as the perfect kitten. We filled out the paperwork and prepared for her arrival. When she came home, it became increasingly obvious that Cinnamon didn’t understand “no”, “stop it” or “don’t do that”. She was the worst cat I’ve ever owned. I was beginning to doubt my therapist’s advice. After visiting our vet, she concluded that Cinnamon just wanted our attention. She fought tooth and nail to get a bite of our meals. She’d fearlessly lick sharp knives when left unattended for a split second. Cinnamon stole my heart with her bravery and kept me busier than I’d ever expected. We decided to start taking her for walks. I could barely leave the house before, but my heart couldn’t say no to Cinnamon. Cinnamon showed me what bravery looked like. She didn’t stop to consider every possible outcome of a situation; she simply went for it. If there was a dog at a park, she would run toward it. She jumped without knowing where she would land. She loved adventure. I found myself mirroring her behavior after a while, jumping out of bed without a second thought. I began to find the motivation to get out of bed in the morning. Cinnamon unfortunately passed away after a medical accident. I’m no stranger to sadness or grief, but losing my pet so suddenly was the most confusing emotional experience I’ve had to date. She no longer wakes me up at 5 am begging for breakfast, but she’s still the reason I get up every morning. Our time is often cut unpredictably, unmistakably short. It would be a shame to live life being anything less than brave and adventurous. 8. Why did the author’s therapist recommend that she get a cat? A. To learn how to interact with animals. B. To help the author fill up her spare time; C. To solve the author’s fear of going out. D. To distract the author’s attention from her pain. 9. How did the author feel at first after Cinnamon came home? A. Thrilled. B. Amazed. C. Pleased. D. Disappointed. 10. What can be inferred from the text? A. Walking Cinnamon outdoors became an adventure for the author. B. The author was positively affected by Cinnamon’s courageous behavior. C. Cinnamon loved going outside and took consequences into consideration. D. The author decided to take Cinnamon outside as she was too troublesome to stay in. 11. What did the author want to convey in this text? A. Life is short and unpredictable. B. The loss of a pet can be painful. C. We should have the courage to take risks. D. Animal-assisted therapy is the best cure for mental illness. 8 C 9. D 10. B 11. She loved adventure.I found myself mirroring her behavior after a while, jumping out of bed without a second thought. I began to find the motivation to get out of bed in the morning.(我们决定开始带她去散步。 根据最后一段“It would be a shame to live life being anything less than brave and adventurous.(如果生活中没有勇气和冒险精神,那将是一种遗憾。)” D Astronomers have taken the first ever image of a black hole, which is located in a distant galaxy (星系). The black hole is 500 million trillion km away and was photographed by a network of eight telescopes across the world. It was captured by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). The announcement was made in Washington, Brussels, Santiago, Shanghai, Taipei and Tokyo. Details have been published today in Astrophysical Journal Letters. Prof Heino Falcke, of Radboud University in the Netherlands, who proposed the experiment, told BBC News that the black hole was found in a galaxy called M87. “What we see is larger than the size of our entire Solar System,” he said. “It has a mass 6.5 billion times that of the Sun. And it is one of the heaviest black holes that we think exists. It is an absolute monster, the heavyweight champion of black holes in the Universe.” The image shows an intensely bright “ring of fire”, as Prof Falcke describes it, surrounding a perfectly circular dark hole. The bright halo is caused by very heated gas falling into the hole. The light is brighter than all the billions of other stars in the galaxy combined — which is why it can be seen at such distance from Earth. The edge of the dark circle at the center is the point at which the gas enters the black hole, which is an object that has such a large gravitational pull, not even light can escape. “It is remarkable that the image we observe is so similar to that which we get from our theoretical calculations. So far, it looks like Einstein is correct once again.” said Dr Ziri Younsi, of University College London — who is part of the EHT collaboration. Chinese scientists were involved in the observation through a telescope in Hawaii. They were also highly involved in follow-up data processing and theoretical analysis, said Shen Zhiqiang, head of the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Shanghai Astronomical Observatory and a member of the EHT international team. Shanghai and Taipei were selected as two of the cities to hold news conferences, together with Washington, Brussels, Santiago and Tokyo, a recognition of China’s contribution. “In the fields of astronomy, radio astronomy, and space astrophysics, China has made a significant contribution to this global project,” Falcke said. 12. What does the underlined word in Para.4 mean? A. Saying hello to somebody. B. A circle of light. C. Not having much distance. D. A hole in something. 13. What can we learn about the black hole from Paragraphs 3 and 4? A. Its large gravitational pull is so strong that light cannot escape. B. The light of its ring is as bright as all the other stars in the galaxy. C. It has a mass 6.5 billion times that of the Moon. D. It is one of the lightest black holes that exists. 14. Which is the role played by Chinese scientists in the experiment? A. Playing an important part. B. Leading the experiment. C. Just processing the data. D. Starting the experiment. 15. Which is the best title for the passage? A. A Book about Black Holes B. How Einstein Discovered a Black Hole C. How a Black Hole Is formed D. First Image of a Black Hole Taken 【答案】12. B 13. A 14. A 15. 根据划线词上文“The image shows an intensely bright “ring of fire”, as Prof Falcke describes it, surrounding a perfectly circular dark hole.(这张照片显示了一个非常明亮的“火环”,正如Falcke教授所描述的那样,围绕着一个完美的圆形黑洞)”和后文“is caused by very heated gas falling into the hole(是由落入黑洞的高温气体造成的)”可知,照片上的黑洞边缘有一圈明亮的光,这圈光是由落入黑洞的高温气体造成的。 根据第四段中“The edge of the dark circle at the center is the point at which the gas enters the black hole, which is an object that has such a large gravitational pull, not even light can escape.(中心黑色圆形的边缘就是气体被吞入黑洞之处,这里的万有引力非常大,甚至连光线都无法逃脱)”可知,这个黑洞的万有引力非常大,连光线都无法逃脱。故选A。 根据倒数第三段中“Chinese scientists were involved in the observation through a telescope in Hawaii. They were also highly involved in follow-up data processing and theoretical analysis(中国科学家通过夏威夷的望远镜参与了这次观测。他们还高度参与了后续数据处理和理论分析)”和最后一段“In the fields of astronomy, radio astronomy, and space astrophysics, China has made a significant contribution to this global project(在天文学、射电天文学和空间天体物理学领域,中国为这个全球项目做出了重大贡献)”可知,在实验中,中国科学家发挥了重要作用。故选A。 根据全文内容,结合第一段中“Astronomers have taken the first ever image of a black hole, which is located in a distant galaxy (星系).(天文学家首次拍摄到位于遥远星系的黑洞照片)”可知,文章主要介绍了天文学家拍摄到首张黑洞照片,并对黑洞和这张照片进行了详细说明。 Every summer holiday, there are always many drowning (溺死) accidents. 【16题详解】 空前提到“Especially, swimming in the wild is extremely dangerous. 【17题详解】 结合上文及空前“The main reason is that people who can’t swim have a fear of water( 主要原因是不会游泳人害怕水 )”可知,溺亡的人很大比例都是会游泳的人,其主要原因是不会游泳的人怕水,所以他们应是不会靠近危险水域,D项“他们不想靠近危险水域”承接空前内容,符合语境,D项中的they指代空前“people who can't swim”,故选D项。 【18题详解】 根据空前“But the person that can swim is otherwise. (但是会游泳的人就不一样了)”可知,空后应是具体讲会游泳的人的情况,A项“他不害怕水”符合题意,与空后“likes to enter water(喜欢入水)”表达意思一样,A项中“He”指代空前“the person that can swim”,故选A项。 【19题详解】 上文“Surprisingly, in many drowning accidents, a large proportion (比例) of drowning deaths are able to swim.(令人惊讶的是,在许多溺水事故中,很大一部分溺水死亡者能够游泳。)”提到在很多溺亡事故中,很大比例的死亡人数是会游泳的人,根据空后“Don’t make the mistake of thinking that drowning deaths are mostly swimmers. From the moment my husband brought home a box of six chicks at the start of the pandemic, our nine-year-old, Sophie, hasn’t let them out of her sight. The maze at 1404 Wheelock Rd. N. Danville B Confucius (孔子), a famous teacher, was a politician and philosopher (哲 学 家 ) who lived in “Spring and Autumn Period”. Confucius did this until he was 30 years old but he always wanted to do more. D. Hopeful. C “You should get a cat, ”my therapist(治疗专家)said. D Astronomers have taken the first ever image of a black hole, which is located in a distant galaxy (星系). 15.
