Android phones (安卓手机) will be used to sense earthquakes around the world. They may one day be able to provide global warnings about earthquakes.
Google, which helped develop Android, is helping build the quake alerts (警报器) into all phones that run the common mobile operating system. Android users who have enabled location services and are near a quake of magnitude (震级) 4.5 or greater will receive a full-screen earthquake warning, telling them to drop to the floor and look for cover. The screen will also provide information about the quake’s magnitude and distance from the user. Depending on their distance from a quake, people could get several seconds or perhaps a minute of warning.
California's world-class earthquake early warning system will be a standard function on every Android phone-giving millions of people precious (宝贵的) seconds to drop, cover and hold on when the big one hits. Users don’t need to download California’s MyShake app in order to receive the warnings. IPhone users won’t receive the warnings through Apple’s operating system, but they can download the MyShake app.
Also, Google announced that Android phones will begin sensing earthquakes from around the world. “Your Android phone can be a mini-seismometer (地震仪), joining millions of other Android phones out there to form the world’s largest earthquake detection network,” according to a Google blog post.
Hundreds of millions of people live in areas where earthquakes take place often. But many countries are short of information to build detection and alert systems. The information will be used at first to provide fast and accurate (精确的) information on Google Search. But Google said it could begin sending out earthquake alerts next year.

We are often served single-use plastic cutlery (餐具) while eating out, like knives, forks and spoons. However, plastic cutlery is one of the biggest causes of pollution on our earth. While people are trying different ways to reduce plastic waste in their daily life, some companies are also taking action and among them is Biofase. Recently the company has found a new way to deal with plastic pollution—they succeeded in creating single-use cutlery with avocado seeds (鳄梨种子) that can biodegrade (生物降解) in 240 days.
Biofase is based in Mexico and there is one thing they can easily get their hands on-avocados. The avocado is a fruit with hard dark green skin and a large seed inside. Mexico is the world leader in avocado growing—about 50% of the world’s avocados come from the country. As many companies there process avocados to make oil, Biofase wanted to collect avocado seeds from the companies and make use of them. But it was not so easy to find a suitable way to turn them into biodegradable cutlery. The biggest challenge (挑战) was to find a way to turn the material into a desired (期望的) shape.
Everything comes to him who works hard. After studying for over a year and a half, Biofase was able to make single-use cutlery with avocado seeds. Dr. Chip Taylor teaches biology at a university in the United States. He studies one kind of North American butterfly. During the late summer or autumn, this butterfly travels from Northern USA and Southern Canada to Mexico, covering thousands of miles. Fantastic facts about the butterfly have been drawing Dr. Taylor’s attention.
In Mexico, the butterflies always return to the same small piece of forest, which is only 20 kilometers wide. Here, as many as 230 million butterflies spend the winter. They cover some trees almost completely. The butterflies that return to the south are the great-great grandchildren of the butteries that left for the north. When they begin to travel north in spring, the females lay eggs. They lay eggs on only one plant: milkweed.
But in Mexico, people cut down the trees that the butterflies need to rest on because they want more land for farming. In the United States and Canada, farmers use chemicals that kill milkweed. This worries Dr. Taylor a lot.
Now things are improving. Mexico has begun to protect parts of its forests. The United States and Canada have encouraged farmers to use fewer chemicals.
Scientists still don’t understand how the butterflies know when to fly south. If they are even a few days late, they will freeze (冻僵). And how do all the great-great grandchildren find the same forest in Mexico every year? This is both puzzling and interesting for many scientists.
There are many mysteries yet to be discovered by those interested in science. Would you like to study biology?

Type in “A cat wants to go to space” and ask the robot to write a bedtime story. Just one second later, you’ll get the story of Max, who got over many difficulties to sing among the stars. This robot writer is called ChatGPT developed by a US company Open AI. The technology chats in a conversational way, answering questions from the Internet users. It can translate languages, talk with people and write songs, poems and even jokes. It’s one of the most powerful AI robots of its kind.
The power of ChatGPT lies in its speed and understanding of complicated (复杂的) matters. We may spend hours researching, understanding and writing an article on the theory of evolution (进化论). But ChatGPT can produce a well-written one in seconds. Another good thing about it is that if you ask dark, harmful questions, for example, how to make weapons (武器), it will not give you an answer.
However, ChatGPT also brings some problems. The materials (材料) they create are difficult to tell from those made by humans. This causes many problems, such as the copyright (版权) problem and the definition (定义) of art. It could also result in many translators and writers losing their jobs or being paid much less, as their skills are no longer something companies need.
It’s too soon to say what kind of influence ChatGPT will have on our lives. Let’s hope that, if ChatCPT does become bigger and more popular, its effects are mostly positive.

The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics was a great success. China has kept the promise to hold a green Olympics. It took more than six years to prepare for the Games. In this process, the designers put the idea of green Olympics into every part. They integrated green Olympics with the city and its surroundings (环境). Many green actions made it possible, like providing environmentally friendly smart beds, using a large number of new energy cars, supporting sporting places with 100% clean energy and reusing rain and snow water.
Take making ice as an example. China didn’t use R507, a common material to make ice, because it isn’t friendly enough to the environment. Through 18 months’ hard work, China independently developed the CO₂ direct cooling technology.
A net of tubes (管道) runs under the ice. High-pressure liquid (液态) CO₂ goes through them to create heat (热) exchange. The CO₂ evaporates (蒸发) under the ice surface. The evaporation takes in heat and turns water on the surface into ice. And the CO₂ goes into another circle. This technology helps to make ice better and faster. And above all, it is much greener because there’s no new CO₂ produced. Among all the 15 ice sporting places in the Winter Olympics, 7 used the CO₂ direct cooling technology to make ice. As a result, much less pollution was caused.
The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics is the first to truly achieve carbon neutrality (碳中和), and it has set new standards in green technologies. Some newspapers say China has made great contributions to the world's environmental protection and green development.

One winter morning, Tapiwa Chiwewe was driving to work in Johannesburg, South Africa. He noticed a haze (薄雾) hanging over the city and it didn’t take long for him to realize that it was the pollution we suffered.
At that moment, Chiwewe felt an urge to do something about it, but didn’t know what. He was a computer engineer and knew little about environmental science.
He first did research on air pollution and found that it is the world’s biggest environmental health risk. He decided to work on it in a cooperative (合作的) way. He talked to scientists, officials, and engineers who helped him develop a deeper understanding of the situation, as well as an idea to improve it.
Through years of work. Chiwewe and his coworkers from South Africa and China created an online air quality decision support system (系统). Based on historical and real-time data, the system can correctly predict (预测) air pollution and air quality, which can help people make better decisions about their daily movements, as well as help officials better manage their operations.
Chiwewe learned an important lesson—“a lesson we all need to take into heart if we are to work towards a better future. Even if you’re not an expert in a particular field, your outside expertise may hold the key to solving problems within that field,” he said.
What if Chiwewe hadn’t worried to research the problem and do something about it? What if he had just hoped that someone, somewhere, was taking care of the matter? As Chiwewe said: “Why not just go ahead and deal with the problem as well as you can, in your own way? You may be pleasantly surprised.”

It has been two months since Richard Watson wore 200 special transmitters (信号发射机) for his cows. They are parts of an artificial intelligence (AI) system named Ida. This AI system can send messages to Watson’s phone when his cows are healthy or when they are not feeling well, and it can tell how many animals are sick to the dairy farmers (奶农) and also help them pick out the sick animals.
With the AI system, farmers can get the information they need from their phones instead of going to the farms to check animals every day. So, this AI system can help people spare their time to do other things. Many dairy farmers are interested in Ida. Watson is one of them. On a common morning in March, he pulled out his phone to check his Ida App. It showed that Cows #97800 and #97782 were eating less. This might mean that there was something wrong with them.
However, some farmers say, “I can find out the cow that isn’t feeling great just by looking at her eyes.” Mark Rodgers is a neighbor of Watson’s. He said, “This is what I can do by myself. My experience can help me look after them better. Technology isn’t always useful.”
Ida was developed by the company Connecterra. Yasir Khokhar, the company’s boss, said he came up with the idea while he was living on a farm in Holland. In recent years, plastic pollution has become one of the most serious environmental problems around the world. Many countries have been looking for effective ways for a better future. In November, 2022, China started a “bamboo instead of plastic” initiative (倡议) with the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization (国际竹藤组织), which will hopefully increase green bamboo products and reduce plastic pollution.
Bamboo is a renewable natural resource of great value, such as cleaning air and preventing soil loss. Unlike trees which usually need so long time to fully grow, bamboo can be harvested in 3 to 5 years. As long as it is protected well, bamboo can be cut every year and doesn’t have to be replanted. Bamboo can be used to make different kinds of products. These products can take the place of plastic products in many fields such as packaging and building. Moreover, bamboo is an innocuous material. It doesn’t cause any pollution when it has to be thrown away.
China is one of the countries with the richest bamboo resources in the world. The Chinese are a pioneer (先驱) in the use of bamboo. Provinces Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan and Guizhou in the country have set up companies to develop and produce bamboo products. Do you know the word “migrate”?
“Migrate” is usually used to talk about certain animals such as birds and fish. When animals migrate, they travel a long way from one part of the world to another according to the season. Many animals migrate—they do this often at the same time and to the same place each year. They move to places where conditions are better—where the weather is warmer, where there is more food and water, or where their young will be safer.
People also migrate. When people migrate, they go to live in another area or country, especially in order to find work. In England, when people leave their home country in order to live in another country, we use the word “emigrate” instead of “migrate”. From “migrate” and “emigrate” come the words “migration” and “emigration”. However, if people move from their home country to another to live there evermore (永久地), the word changes from “emigrate” to “immigrate” in the English language. Then the word “immigration” is born.
Isn’t word-making of the English language interesting? And can this process (过程) of finding out the relationships between words and learning them in a group or groups be a way for you to learn the language?

Who is the greatest teacher in Chinese history? Many people would think of Confucius, whose birthday was September 28. Although he lived over 2,000 years ago, people still remember and respect him for his contribution to the education today.
Confucius lived in the Kingdom of Lu, which lies in Shandong Province. He lived during the Spring and Autumn Period. He had a hard childhood. His father died when he was only 3. His mother brought him up. As a child, he had to work to help his mother, but young Confucius didn’t give up studying. He visited many famous teachers and learned music, history, poetry and sports.

A businessman and inventor has been working on a great project that includes pulling a huge iceberg (冰山) all the way from Antarctica (南极洲).
Because of its special climate (气候), the United Arab Emirates (UAE) depends heavily on desalinated water (淡化水), which is bad for the environment. For the last six years Abdulla Alshehi has been working on a project to pull a 2km×500m iceberg from Antarctica, using modern technology to move it 5,500 miles to the Arabian Gulf, hoping to provide drinking water for millions of people for up to five years, as well as change the weather in this area.
In 1975, French scientists came up with the plan, but the plan failed two years later, as a result of technological difficulties.
Alshehi wants to pull a huge iceberg, using a belt (带子) to prevent it from falling apart during the long journey. He expects it to lose about 30% during the 10 months it would take to pull the iceberg to the Arabian Gulf, but the remaining would still leave more than enough.
How to keep the iceberg from turning into water fast is another big challenge. Alshehi said, “The iceberg is expected to reach in winter, and the iceberg is as deep as 300 meters in the sea —the deeper you go, the colder the ice is.”
More experiments will be done later this year, with a smaller iceberg going to be pulled for a short way by boat. If that works out well, preparations will be made to have a huge one moved.

Aarrav Anil has had a deep interest in mechanics (机械学) since childhood. This allows the teen to represent (代表) India at more than 20 robotics competitions around the world. But Aarrav didn’t create his smart spoon to win a prize. He saw his uncle, who has Parkinson’s disease (PD) (帕金森病), struggling to feed himself. Food kept falling out of his mouth, making him look like a mess. He wanted to make a change.
More than 7 million people in India have PD.The disease influences the brain, causing patients to shake uncontrollably. As the disease progresses, it leads to difficulty in eating by oneself.
Aarrav wanted his uncle to be able to eat by himself. This encouraged the teen to look for a way to help his uncle. So he took to his room with sensors (传感器), a 3D printer and other tools. But not everything went well.
“It was disappointing not to be able to find certain parts I needed in India. I had to buy some from abroad,” Aarrav said in an interview.
Aarrav made a first model, but the spoon handle was not easy for his uncle to hold. “I’ve improved the invention. It needs to be waterproof (防水的). The spoon must be easily separated, so that it can be cleaned and replaced with a fork. And the spoon needs to be deeper to hold more food,” the teen said.
The smart spoon is now being tested at a local college. The test is expected to be completed in early 2024. Aarrav hopes that his smart spoon will be used in hospitals soon.

Type in “A cat wants to go to space” and ask the robot to write a bedtime story. Just one second later, you’ll get the story of Max, who got over many difficulties to sing among the stars.
This robot writer is called ChatGPT. US company OpenAI developed it. The technology chats in a conversational way, answering questions from the Internet user. It can translate languages, talk with people and write songs, poems and even jokes.
The power of ChatGPT lies in its speed and understanding of complicated (复杂的) matters. We may spend hours researching, understanding and writing an article on the theory of evolution (进化论). But ChatGPT can produce a well-written one in seconds. Another good thing about it is that if you ask dark, dangerous questions, it will not give you an answer.
However, there are also some issues about ChatGPT. The texts they create are difficult to tell from those made by humans. This causes many problems, such as the copyright (版权) problem. It could also result in many translators and writers losing their jobs or being paid much less, as their skills are no longer something companies need. The tool also makes it easier for students to cheat on homework, which is bad for their development.
It’s too soon to say what kind of influence ChatGPT will have on our lives. Let’s hope that, if we make good use of ChatGPT, it may turn out to be a strong tool!

Cities around the world are racing to become “smart”. It’s just like a classroom full of hard-working students. Take Toronto, Canada, for example. Tech company Google has made public a 1,500-page plan. It is going to remake two neighborhoods with things like snow-melting roads.
To build smart cities, we need lots of new technologies, such as robots and artificial intelligence (AI). These technologies will lead to safer and more efficient (效率高的) cities. However, they will also raise questions about privacy.
But there is a more serious problem: Smart cities will be difficult to manage.
As we know, tech products are sometimes unreliable (不可靠的). The Internet and our computers break down regularly.
Tech products also age quickly. Only a few years into their lives, problems may become commoner and commoner.
In smart cities, many basic systems and services, such as water services, are based on such tech products. What if they break down regularly? Can you imagine the result?
New technologies in 2020 will be outdated before 2025. If we use smart technologies widely in cities, we will need to be prepared to replace them every few years. But who would want to pay this bill?
The most important problem is whether having a smart city will make us better at solving urban problems. Smart technologies can’t solve problems on their own. Suppose AI programs discover a road that needs to be repaired. It still requires people to show up with asphalt (沥青) and a steamroller (蒸汽压路机), doesn’t it?
As an engineer, I think smart technologies should have a place in cities. However, that place is not everywhere. For many of our urban problems, we don’t really need the latest technologies. The best of the old ideas works better.

As an English, I can speak three languages-English, German and French, so do you think the British people are very good language learners? The fact is that they aren’t. Some statistics (数据) from the survey done by the European Commission (欧盟委员会) showed that 62% of the British people only speak English. 38% speak at least one foreign language and 18% speak two or more. Compared with the British people, 56% of the people in other European countries speak at least one foreign language and 28% speak two or more.
From this you can see that the British people are famous for not speaking foreign languages and that they are not good language learners in Europe. And the survey also showed that English is the most widely-spoken foreign language.
Many European people can have a conversation in English. That’s why my people don’t think it is necessary to learn a foreign language.
In Britain, students are not required to learn a foreign language. That means learning a foreign language is only an option at school. In the UK schools it is common for children to start leaning a foreign language at 11 and many of them give it up at 14. So why don’t students continue learning foreign languages at school? Because they think it is more difficult to get good marks in languages than in other subjects such as science or history. To solve this situation, the British government is looking for different ways to improve language learning at school. One way is to start leaning it at a much younger age. Another one is to give school children more choices.
Changing the British attitude (态度) to learning foreign languages may be a hard task but the government decides to try!

They cover the areas of tableware, furniture, decoration, daily necessities, etc. Many of them have been sold to different countries. China is also sharing its technologies and experience to help other countries with rich bamboo resources. It is hoped that countries will work together for global green development.

1.The weather in the UAE is probably ________.
A.very dry with little or no rain

B.The world climate will be influenced.
C.People of the UAE would pay more for water.
D.The UAE will pull another iceberg several years later.
4.What can we know about the iceberg that Alshehi will choose?
A.The iceberg may break up easily on the way.
B.Most of the iceberg will turn into water on the way.
C.The best time for the iceberg to arrive in the UAE is this winter.
D.The underwater part of the iceberg may be hundreds of meters below sea level.

A.The best of old ideas. B.Lots of new technologies.
C.Asphalt and steamrollers. D.The internet and computers.
4.According to the author, smart cities will be ________.
A.safe and convenient B.easier to manage
C.not as efficient as imagined D.harmful to the environment
5.The example of a road that needs to be repaired is used to show ________.

The story is told a foreign student studying in an English-speaking country. She was reading a book by the window when she heard someone shout, “Look out!” She put her head out to see what was going on. Just then a board came flying down from above, missing her head by just a few feet. She pulled her head in quickly. Then out of danger, she carefully put her head out and looked up. There was a man mending something.
“Don’t you hear me call out?” he asked.
“Yes, that’s what I did,” she answered angrily.
True or not, this story shows the problem with idioms (习语) in a language. Idioms are an important part of a language. But they can be a problem for a foreign student of the language. Often it is impossible to get the meaning from the words themselves. In this story, the young woman did look. But “look out” as a set phrase (固定的短语) has a different meaning. It means “take care”. When it is shouted it is a cry of warning, meaning “Danger!”
A beginner is often at a loss (不知所措) when he meets many of the idioms for the first time. What does a particular (特定的) idiom mean? In order to get the meaning, he should look it up in a dictionary. When he first uses such idioms, he is sure to run into a lot of trouble. But he shouldn’t give up trying. If he keeps at it long enough, he will learn and things will turn out well in the end.
