Eppie stepped forward. She was blushing (脸红), but held her head high. “Thank you, sir. But I
can’t leave my father.”
Godfrey was extremely annoyed. He wanted to do what he thought was his duty. And adopting
(收养) Eppie would make him feel much less guilty (内疚的) about his past.“ But, Eppie, you must
agree,” he cried. “You are my daughter! Silas, Eppie is my own child.”
Silas, who had been relieved (宽慰的) by hearing Eppie’s answer to Godfrey, now felt angry.
“Then, sir,” he answered angrily. “why didn’t you confess (坦白) this sixteen years ago, before
I began to love her? Why do you come to take her away now, when it’s like taking the heart out of
my body? God gave her to me because you turned your back on her!”
Godfrey thought Silas was being very selfish. “I think, Silas,” he said, “that you shouldn’t
stand in her way, when she could have a better life.”
Silas was silent for a moment. He was worried that perhaps Godfrey was right. At last, he
made himself bring out the difficult words. “All right. I'll say no more. I won’t prevent her from
going.”
Godfrey was relieved to hear this, and thought that Eppie would now agree. But Eppie stood
by Silas’s side, holding his hand in hers, and spoke almost coldly. “Thank you, sir, for your kind
offer. But I wouldn’t be happy if I left father.”

You may have a house robot that can do housework for you. But is it so smart? Meet Laura, a
robot in the National Library in Madrid, Spain, copying out the old books and writings in its
collection. See Aurora, a headless dog-sized robot used to keep birds and other animals away at an
Alaskan airport. Watch another 1.8 meter-tall legless robot called EveR6, waving its arms to guide
musicians through a performance.
Those robots above require artificial intelligence (AI). AI is a computer system that can
understand languages, make decisions and solve problems. AI can be taught skills using a process
called machine learning. Humans give AI information such as books, photos or videos to train it.
The more information it studies, the better it can do its job.
▲ . For example, when you watch TV, AI is watching you. It’ll know what your favorite
is and suggest similar ones. In hospitals, AI is very good at suggesting treatments and can even
invent new medicines. To cut down food waste, some schools introduce online systems for the
students to choose meals ahead of time. In cities, AI is used to watch out for cars that make black
smoke. It works together with the police and transportation teams to stop them and keep the air
clean. AI can help us fight climate change by finding clever ways to reduce energy use.
Some people worry that AI will take away a large number of jobs and also fear that AI could

develop out of our control and bring danger to humans. However, AI is expected to be a more
powerful production tool that will help humans achieve more in less time. It is believed that the
flying car will be made to offer an easier way out of the morning traffic jam. Humans imagine AI
might even find a way to solve the problems of our energy needs completely. Anyway, there is still
a long journey for humans and AI.
41. In which pictures can we see Aurora and EveR6?
a b c d
A. a, c B. b, d C. b, c D. a, d
42. What BIG question does Paragraph 2 answer?
A. How many AI robots are mentioned? B. Why are AI robots made?
C. Where is AI used? D. What is AI?
43. Which of the following can be put in ▲ ?
A. AI will be developed rapidly B. Humans depend too much on AI
C. AI has become part of daily life D. Humans wonder if AI could think
44. In the future, AI is expected to be able to ________.
A. suggest TV programs B. help produce enough energy
C. invent new medicines D. cut down food waste
45. What would the author write about after the last paragraph?
A. The end of AI. B. The way to get along with AI.
C. The history of AI. D. The skill of making AI robots.

It’s Friday evening. My daughters sighed when I gently took the iPads away from their laps.
One by one, our screens were turned off. We lit the candles and sat down to have a big meal.
We call it our “Tech-Free Day” which lasts from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday. Now
most friends know they will not be able to contact us by using computers or mobile phones for 24
hours.
I first understood the importance of “Tech-Free Day” in 2008, when my father had got brain
cancer. Some days he would have only one good hour, and the only thing I wanted to do was to be
with him. When I looked after my father, I turned off my mobile phone.
第 8 页 共 12 页
Soon after that, my husband and I decided to turn off all the electronic things for one full day
every week.
During our “Tech-Free Day”, time slows down. Our Saturdays now feel like mini-vacations.
We drive cars or ride bikes. We work in the garden, play board games and cook meals with our kids.
I feel like a better mother, wife and person.
Keeping a balance between the good and the bad of technology is important for my family. The
technology helps us share knowledge and funny ideas all over the world. But the technology also
takes something away from us. When we stay up late at night linking from website to website or
sending messages, we click again and again until we have been overloaded.
Now we’re rushing into the time full of high technology. We should pay attention to what we
are doing online and when we should go offline.
I will always remember the most important thing in my family: Tech-Free Day.
46. When is “Tech-Free Day” in the writer’s family?
_____________________________________________________________________
47. What did the writer and her husband decide to do after her father got cancer?
_____________________________________________________________________
48. What change does “Tech-Free Day” bring to the writer in Paragraph 5?
_____________________________________________________________________
49. What’s the good of technology according to the passage?

50. What other things will you do during “Tech-Free Day”?

If sports are something that interests you, you must want to know how to be good at them.
Succeeding at a sport takes skill. 51 Skill alone may take you far, but you’ll never go all
the way without the right attitude and team spirit. The following tips can help you be a better sports
player.
Join a sports team. If you’re interested in sports, joining a team is a good way to start. 52
第 9 页 共 12 页
You are likely to develop friendships with at least some of your team members. Besides, even if
your skills are low, joining a team will improve your skills.
Set big but realistic goals for yourself. This does not mean being unrealistic, or saying you’re
going to go professional within a year. Instead, you should take a look at what you are, and decide
where you think you would like to be. 53
Be a good sport. Being good at sports means more than physical strength and speed. 54
If you fail in a match, accept the loss and show respect to other players for their victory. Treat loss
as a learning experience. Find out what you did wrong, and then try to improve it for the next game.
55 It’s possible to get so crazy about winning that you forget why you want to be good
at the very beginning. Not taking the time to enjoy the sport you play results in a fast burnout.
Whether you’re practising or playing a competition, remember it is the joy that matters.
A. Let yourself have fun.
B. Stay focused on the competition.
C. Exercising with others is very enjoyable and encouraging.
D. In order to be truly great, you need to be positive towards failure.

Dear Peter,
I’m glad to know that you’re interested in Chinese. I can’t wait to share something with you. In order to improve our speaking and reading abilities, our school had Chinese language and literature competition in the library last week. Not only a lot of students but also some teachers took part in it.
There were a lot of interesting activities, such as reciting poems, writing compositions and reading Chinese classic literature works and so on. I also joined in the competition. I recited poems as many as I could and won the first prize. How meaningful it was for me.
I think it’s a good way to study Chinese. I am more interested in Chinese learning after the competition.
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours,
Li Hua
