My initial exploration of the world of comic books happened through the comic strips in newspapers. It began with a fondness for Garfield and his adventures, and led to the discovery of a range of comic books like Champak, Tintin, and Archie. They enabled me to enjoy myself in a world without iPads and the Internet ― just like so many of my friends who were fond of reading.
While my access to comics as a child was limited to what was printed in the newspaper, this changed once I grew older and started visiting bookstores to buy the books that I wanted to read. Having grown up on a diet of image-heavy books, I found the idea of reading text-only novels quite formidable. As I searched for books that lay somewhere in between, I came across a copy of Bhimayana ― a graphic novel. It felt familiar due to its comic-like theme and design. Plus, understanding complex narratives through pictures was relatively easier and more fun. And so, as I grew older, I found myself transitioning towards graphic novels from childish comic books.
Graphic novels dealt with serious topics in a more engaging manner. They would literally show me what was going on. For example, when I was reading Joe Sacco’s Palestine, I didn’t have to imagine the ruin caused by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. I could actually see it while reading about it.
Fast-forward a few years to when I was given a copy of Jonathan Bloomfield’s Palestine: A Novel. Though I was impressed by the compelling (扣人心弦的) nature of storytelling in his book, I am not sure if I would have been able to visualize and enjoy his text-only version so much had I not read Sacco’s Palestine first. Thanks to the graphic novel, I had a “picture” of whatever had happened, and that made it easier and more fun to understand the details of the overall story.
From black and white strips and colorful comic books to illustrated graphic novels, this type of storytelling has come a long way. While my romance with comic books is still ongoing, in the long run, my love for graphic novels is more substantial and here to stay.
24.Why did the author turn to comic books as a child?
A.He found comic books interesting.
B.He had limited access to other books.
C.He wanted to be different from his friends.
D.He could relax from reading text-only books.
25.Which word can best explain the underlined word “formidable” in paragraph 2?
A.Acceptable. B.Natural.
C.Scary. D.Appealing.
26.What does the author say about reading Sacco’s Palestine?
A.It encouraged him to read more text-only novels.
B.It improved his understanding of Bloomfield’s book.
C.It introduced him to a compelling style of storytelling.
D.It changed his attitude to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
27.What does the author mainly talk about in the passage?
A.Comic books are more than comic.
B.Why he loves reading graphic novels.
C.Why he turned to serious novels eventually.
D.Picture books are here to stay for many reasons.

The spring dance is in two weeks, and my friend Lisa needs help choosing a dress. She shows me her phone, filled with lots of pretty dresses, not one over $20. After some thought, she settles on an attractive gown with elaborated details on the top. But two weeks after the dance, the dress ends up in the trash, worn just once.
Welcome to the world of fast fashion.
Fast fashion, popularized in the 1990s, offers trendy, cheaply-priced, poorly-made clothes on a weekly basis to match the quick pace at which fashion trends move. With the fast development of modern technology, consumers have gradually shifted from traditional fast fashion brands to new online-only retailers (零售商). These fast fashion newcomers have thrived because of their unique business models. They exist entirely online, allowing them to ship the thousands of new styles they release daily to consumers directly from their warehouses, avoiding import duties in the process. Meanwhile, cheap overseas labor and synthetic (合成的) textiles keep prices irresistibly low.
These practices, however, are hurting the Earth more than ever before, because these retailers rely only on international shipping to move their products, which increases the annual billion tons of greenhouse gases released by shipping. Virtually all of these brands sell clothes made from oil-based synthetic fibers like polyester and nylon. During their lifetime, these fibers are responsible for 35 percent of the micro-plastics polluting our oceans and can subsequently take centuries to break down in landfills.
Though fast fashion represents an understandably desirable combination of style and savings, now, more than ever, we simply can not quantify the true cost of our clothing with a price tag. When consumers want to update their wardrobes, they can do so sustainably by reworking old garments clothing or researching environmentally conscious brands.
For now, I’ll be at my next school dance rocking the same dress I wore last year.
28.Why is Lisa’s e-purchase experience mentioned?
A.To note the poor quality of pretty dresses.
B.To stress the negative impact of fast fashion.
C.To show the great convenience of online shopping.
D.To display the extensive variety of clothing choices.
29.What is the distinctive characteristic of fast fashion?
A.Even-paced launches of new trends. B.Cost-saving measures via local labor.
C.Full-scale reliance on online operation. D.Limited-edition production at high prices.
30.What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.The lifespans of fast fashion business. B.The fibers used in fast fashion industry.
C.The pollution from fast fashion shipments. D.The harm caused by fast fashion practices.
31.What does the author suggest for consumers?
A.Explore updated items regularly. B.Redesign existing clothes sustainably.
C.Refresh wardrobes with current styles. D.Investigate brands through price labels.

Each of us individually is the accumulated (积累) product of thousands of generations that have come before us in an unbroken line. Our culture and technology today are also the result of thousands of years of accumulated and remixed cultural knowledge. Cumulative culture allowed humans to adapt to a diversity of environments and challenges. But, it is unclear when cumulative culture first developed during ancient human evolution.
“Our earliest ancestors have been successful at adapting to ecological conditions that require different kinds of problems to be solved,” said Perreault, an associate professor with the School of Human Evolution and Social Change. “Cumulative culture is key because it allows human populations to build on and recombine the solutions of prior generations and to develop new complex solutions to problems very quickly.”
As a baseline for the complexity of stone tool technologies achievable without cumulative culture, Perreault analyzed technologies used by chimpanzees (黑猩猩). He then analyzed changes in the complexity of stone tool-making techniques across the past 3.3 million years of the archaeological record to explore the origin of cumulative culture. He broke down the complexity of the stone tool technologies by the number of steps that each tool-making sequence (序列) involved.
The results suggested that from around 3.3 to 1.8 million years ago, stone tool-making sequences remained within the range of the baselines. From around 1.8 million to 600,000 years ago, making sequences began to slightly top the complexity baseline. But, after around 600,000 years ago, the complexity of making sequences rapidly increased. “By 600,000 years ago or so, ancient human populations started relying on unusually complex technologies, and we only see rapid increases in complexity after that time as well,” said Perreault.
Tool-assisted food-hunting may have been the motive for the earliest beginning of the evolution of cumulative culture. Early ancient humans, 3.4 to 2 million years ago, likely relied on strategies that require tools - like accessing meat and organs - leading to changes in brain size, lifetime and biology that set the stage for cumulative culture.
32.What does cumulative culture refer to according to the text?
A.Emphasizing individual development.
B.Paying attention to reforming social structure.
C.Adapting to a changing living condition step by step.
D.Building up technological improvements over generations.
33.What’s Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.How Perreault conducted the research. B.How important stone tool technologies were.
C.What the baseline of cumulative culture was. D.Why Perreault chose chimpanzees for the study.
34.What happened by 600,000 years ago?
A.Tool-making sequences remained unchanged.
B.The population of the earth increased sharply.
C.The ancestors began to make stone tools.
D.The technology reached a turning point.
35.Why are strategies that require tools mentioned in the last paragraph?
A.To show the result of human brains’ changes.
B.To illustrate the motive of cumulative culture.
C.To indicate the significance of common culture.
D.To stress the eating habits of human ancestors.
When people first come across the Law of Attraction (吸引力法则), their hearts and minds often immediately think of one specific thing that they’d love to achieve in their lives. However, the next thought is often “But I can’t do that”. You may come up with all kinds of excuses. 36 Here are the reasons why you should believe you can use the Law of Attraction to obtain whatever you want.
Small steps create big changes. One of the most common reasons for abandoning dreams is that they simply seem too huge to realize. Usually it’s manageable to think of following your dream as taking a series of significant but small steps. 37 Then look at each of them. Not so unrealistic now, is it?
38 When people are interviewed on their deathbeds or write about their lives in autobiographies (自传), it is often observed that major regrets tend to relate to things that were not done. In older age, it’s likely that you will be uncomfortable with the idea that you didn’t even try to do the thing that you loved or attempt to obtain what you truly wanted. 39 But you don’t ever need to feel this way! Make today the first day of your new journey towards avoiding regret.
Steps towards your dream are never backwards steps. Another common worry is that if you follow your dreams, you’ll be “taking steps back”. 40 However, what looks like backward steps in your old life can more productively and accurately be seen as forwarding steps in the brand new life you’re creating.
A.You can avoid regret.
B.It makes sense to move forward confidently.
C.Luckily, the truth is that it’s never too late to follow your dream.
D.It often comes up when people are at the top of careers they hate.
E.It is painful to feel like you haven’t ever found your true purpose.
F.For example, challenge yourself to write down the path to success in ten stages.
G.You have enough life experience and knowledge to make changes to pursue your dream.

How can you better understand body language to feel more confident and be more effective in a range of situations? If you are struggling to understand how to interpret body language of colleagues in different cultural contexts and how to respond, you may find yourself 56 (search) for a checklist of dos and don’ ts. But this isn’t necessarily the 57 (great) approach. Besides, you can start your interpretation 58 analysing groups, rather than looking at each gesture in isolation.
For example, imagine that you are presenting an idea for a new process in a meeting, and your boss is smiling. Many experts would advise you that smiling is 59 (cultural) universal, so you might assume that your boss must be happy with your presentation. However, making this 60 (assume) without deeper investigation could prove problematic. If you take 61 second look at your boss, you might notice that she is also laughing slightly, looking down and moving her pen. This could mean a range of different things. How can you understand your boss’s reaction correctly? The answer is to check that your analysis of their body language matches with 62 the person says and how they say it.
To understand the cultural influences 63 have led to her behaviour, it is first important to understand what cultural identity is. Many people use the terms “culture” and “nationality” interchangeably. However, generalising 64 (base) only on nationality can be risky. To help avoid this, the British Council 65 (develop) a description of culture in the last few years.

Ian was a young boy who loved spending time with his grandpa. They would go on adventures together, explore the woods behind their house, and play games. But as Ian’s grandpa grew older, he started to forget things. At first, it was just little things, like where he left his keys or what he had for breakfast. But soon, it became clear that something more serious was happening. His grandpa had Alzheimer’s disease
Ian didn’t fully understand what that meant, but he could see that his grandpa was changing. He would get confused and disoriented (迷茫的), and sometimes he didn’t recognize Ian or his parents. It was hard for Ian to watch his grandpa struggle, but he still loved spending time with him.
One day, Ian’s grandpa didn’t come over for their usual adventure. Ian was worried and asked his parents where he was. They told him that his grandpa was in the hospital, and that he might not be able to come home.
Ian began to experience a nerve breakdown. He didn’t know what he would do without his grandpa. But then he had an idea. He decided to make a book about their adventures together, filled with pictures and stories of all the fun they had had. He worked on it every day, drawing and writing and remembering.
When Ian’s grandpa came home from the hospital, he was confused and disoriented. But then Ian showed him the book he had made. They looked through it together, and Ian told his grandpa all about the adventures they had had. Slowly but surely, his grandpa began to remember.
Over the next few weeks and months, Ian and his grandpa looked at the book together every day. They laughed and talked and remembered. Ian’s grandpa may have forgotten a lot of things, but he never forgot the love he had for his grandson.

Good morning, and welcome to my lecture. I expect every one of you has brought your phone. I imagine some of you may even open Weibo and post things if you get bored! But is social media a good or bad thing to our society?
Today we’ve known how social media makes us feel connected to the outside world. We can pay bills and buy things at the touch of a screen, and do online learning, improve job skills, discover new things… on just one social media app. But what about the dark side of social media? According to some research, social media can be addictive. It can lead to loneliness, anxiety, and depression. But personally, it is particularly worrying that it has replaced the art of communication for many people. Instead of going to someone’s house for a chat, we now use messages and emojis to talk with our friends online, taking away our face-to-face social skills.
I know you all have prepared a lot for this presentation since I announced the topic in class last week. Now it’s time to have your say. Who would like to take the first turn?

【答案】24.A 25.C 26.B 27.B
根据第一段“It began with a fondness for Garfield and his adventures, and led to the discovery of a range of comic books like Champak, Tintin, and Archie. They enabled me to enjoy myself in a world without iPads and the Internet ― just like so many of my friends who were fond of reading.(这一切始于对加菲猫及其冒险的喜爱,由此我发现了一系列漫画书,如《Champak》、《丁丁历险记》和《阿奇漫画》。它们让我在没有iPad和互联网的世界里享受乐趣——就像我的许多喜欢阅读的朋友一样)”可知,作者小时候喜欢漫画书是因为他觉得它们很有趣。故选A项。
根据划线词所在句“While my access to comics as a child was limited to what was printed in the newspaper, this changed once I grew older and started visiting bookstores to buy the books that I wanted to read. Having grown up on a diet of image-heavy books, I found the idea of reading text-only novels quite formidable. (当我还是个孩子的时候,我接触到的漫画仅限于报纸上印刷的内容,但当我长大后开始去书店买我想读的书时,这种情况就改变了。由于我是看着满是图片的书长大的,所以我觉得只读文字的小说这个想法很______。)”以及后文“As I searched for books that lay somewhere in between, I came across a copy of Bhimayana ― a graphic novel.(当我在寻找介于两者之间的书籍时,我偶然发现了一本《Bhimayana》——一本图像小说)”可知,作者从小接触的是满是图片的漫画书,所以当接触到只有文字的小说时,会觉得有些可怕或难以接受,因此才会去寻找介于两者之间的图像小说。
根据第四段“Though I was impressed by the compelling (扣人心弦的) nature of storytelling in his book, I am not sure if I would have been able to visualize and enjoy his text-only version so much had I not read Sacco’s Palestine first. Thanks to the graphic novel, I had a ‘picture’ of whatever had happened, and that made it easier and more fun to understand the details of the overall story. (虽然我被他书中扣人心弦的故事讲述所吸引,但如果我先没有读过Sacco的《Palestine》,我不确定我是否能够如此生动地想象并享受他的纯文本版本。多亏了这本图像小说,我对所发生的事情有了“画面”,这让我更容易也更有趣地理解整个故事的细节)”可知,作者认为读过Sacco的《Palestine》后,他能够更好地理解和享受Bloomfield的纯文本小说。故选B项。
27.主旨大意题。通读全文,特别是根据最后一段“From black and white strips and colorful comic books to illustrated graphic novels, this type of storytelling has come a long way. While my romance with comic books is still ongoing, in the long run, my love for graphic novels is more substantial and here to stay. (从黑白条幅、彩色漫画书到插图图像小说,这种讲故事的方式已经走过了很长的路。虽然我对漫画书的热爱仍在继续,但从长远来看,我对图像小说的热爱更加深厚,并将持续下去)”可知,文章主要讲述了作者为什么喜欢阅读图像小说。故选B项。

根据第一段“The spring dance is in two weeks, and my friend Lisa needs help choosing a dress. She shows me her phone, filled with lots of pretty dresses, not one over $20. After some thought, she settles on an attractive gown with elaborated details on the top. But two weeks after the dance, the dress ends up in the trash, worn just once.(两周后就是春季舞会了,我的朋友丽莎需要人帮她选裙子。她给我看了她的手机,里面有很多漂亮的裙子,没有一件超过20美元。经过一番思考,她选定了一件有吸引力的礼服,上面有精心设计的细节。但舞会结束两周后,这条裙子就被扔进了垃圾桶,只穿过一次)”以及第三段“Fast fashion, popularized in the 1990s, offers trendy, cheaply-priced, poorly-made clothes on a weekly basis to match the quick pace at which fashion trends move.(上世纪90年代流行的快时尚,每周都会推出时髦、廉价、做工低劣的服装,以配合时尚潮流的快速发展)”可知,提到Lisa的网购经历是为了强调快时尚的负面影响。故选B。
根据第三段“They exist entirely online, allowing them to ship the thousands of new styles they release daily to consumers directly from their warehouses, avoiding import duties in the process. Meanwhile, cheap overseas labor and synthetic (合成的) textiles keep prices irresistibly low.(它们完全存在于网上,允许它们每天从仓库直接向消费者运送数千种新款式,避免了这个过程中的进口关税。与此同时,廉价的海外劳动力和合成纺织品使价格保持在不可抗拒的低位)”可知,快时尚的特点是全面依靠网络运营。故选C。
30.主旨大意题。根据第四段“These practices, however, are hurting the Earth more than ever before, because these retailers rely only on international shipping to move their products, which increases the annual billion tons of greenhouse gases released by shipping. Virtually all of these brands sell clothes made from oil-based synthetic fibers like polyester and nylon. During their lifetime, these fibers are responsible for 35 percent of the micro-plastics polluting our oceans and can subsequently take centuries to break down in landfills.(然而,这些做法比以往任何时候都对地球造成了更大的伤害,因为这些零售商只依赖国际航运来运输他们的产品,这增加了航运每年释放的数十亿吨温室气体。几乎所有这些品牌都出售由聚酯和尼龙等油基合成纤维制成的衣服。在它们的一生中,这些纤维造成了35%的微塑料污染我们的海洋,随后可能需要几个世纪才能在垃圾填埋场分解)”可知,第4段主要讲了快时尚造成的危害。故选D。
31.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“When consumers want to update their wardrobes, they can do so sustainably by reworking old garments clothing or researching environmentally conscious brands.(当消费者想要更新他们的衣橱时,他们可以通过改造旧衣服或研究环保品牌来实现可持续发展)”可知,作者建议消费者可持续地重新设计现有服装。故选B。

【答案】32.D 33.A 34.D 35.B
根据第一、二段的有关信息,尤其是第二段中的“Cumulative culture is key because it allows human populations to build on and recombine the solutions of prior generations and to develop new complex solutions to problems very quickly. (累积文化之所以关键,是因为它允许人类群体在前代的解决方案基础上进行构建和重组,并能够非常快速地发展出解决新问题的复杂方案。)”及下文所提及的工具制作技术的演变发展可知,本文中cumulative culture具体指技术改进的世代积累。故选D项。
33.主旨大意题。根据第三段中的“As a baseline for the complexity of stone tool technologies achievable without cumulative culture, Perreault analyzed technologies used by chimpanzees (黑猩猩). (作为没有累积文化背景下石头工具技术复杂性的基线,Perreault分析了黑猩猩所使用的技术。)”以及剩余部分可知,本段主要介绍了Perreault 开展研究的具体方法与策略。故选A项。
根据第四段中的“By 600,000 years ago or so, ancient human populations started relying on unusually complex technologies, and we only see rapid increases in complexity after that time as well (大约在60万年前,古代人类群体开始依赖异常复杂的技术,而且我们也能在那个时期之后看到复杂性的快速增长。)”
根据最后一段中的“Tool-assisted food-hunting may have been the motive for the earliest beginning of the evolution of cumulative culture (工具辅助的觅食狩猎可能是累积文化演化最初开始的动机。)”

【答案】36.C 37.F 38.A 39.E 40.D
36.根据上文“You may come up with all kinds of excuses. (你可能会想出各种各样的借口。)”提到不想付诸行动的各种借口,可知本空要谈到解决这一问题的方案。下文“Here are the reasons why you should believe you can use the Law of Attraction to obtain whatever you want. (下面是为什么你应该相信你可以利用吸引力法则得到你想要的任何东西的原因。)”提到建议和方法,可知本空是对下文的概括。选项C项“Luckily, the truth is that it’s never too late to follow your dream. (幸运的是,事实是,追逐梦想永远不会太晚。)”起到承上启下作用。故选C项。
37.上文“Usually it’s manageable to think of following your dream as taking a series of significant but small steps. (通常情况下,你可以把追求梦想看成是一系列重要而又小的步骤。)”说明可以把追求梦想看成重要而又小的步骤。F项“For example, challenge yourself to write down the path to success in ten stages. (例如,挑战自己,把通往成功的道路分为十个阶段。)”为具体举例解释这一方法,和上文内容意思一致,为上文内容的语意递进。故选F项。
38.该空为段首,总结该段内容。根据下文“When people are interviewed on their deathbeds or write about their lives in autobiographies (自传), it is often observed that major regrets tend to relate to things that were not done. In older age, it’s likely that you will be uncomfortable with the idea that you didn’t even try to do the thing that you loved or attempt to obtain what you truly wanted. (当人们在弥留之际接受采访,或在自传中讲述他们的生活时,我们常常发现,主要的遗憾往往与没有做过的事情有关。在年老的时候,你很可能会因为你甚至没有尝试做你喜欢的事情或试图获得你真正想要的东西而感到不舒服。)”可知,遗憾往往与没有做过的事情有关。A项“You can avoid regret. (你可以避免后悔。)”总结下文内容,引出下文中讲到的人们往往会因为什么而后悔。故选A项。
39.上文“In older age, it’s likely that you will be uncomfortable with the idea that you didn’t even try to do the thing that you loved or attempt to obtain what you truly wanted. (在年老的时候,你很可能会因为你甚至没有尝试做你喜欢的事情或试图获得你真正想要的东西而感到不舒服。)”提到没有尝试做你喜欢的事情或试图获得你真正想要的东西会使自己感到遗憾。下文“But you don’t ever need to feel this way! (但是你不需要有这种感觉!)”说明空处提到了某种感觉。E项“It is painful to feel like you haven’t ever found your true purpose. (感觉自己还没有找到自己真正的目标是很痛苦的。)”为对上文内容的语意递进,同时引起下文,下文中提到的“feel this way (这种感觉)”指的就是该句中的内容。故选E项。
40.上文“Another common worry is that if you follow your dreams, you’ll be “taking steps back”. (另一个常见的担忧是,如果你追随梦想,你会“倒退”。)”提到追随梦想,你会有“倒退”的这种担忧。下文“However, what looks like backward steps in your old life can more productively and accurately be seen as forwarding steps in the brand new life you’re creating. (然而,在你的旧生活中,那些看起来像是倒退的步骤,可以更有效、更准确地被视为你正在创造的全新生活中的前进步骤。)”为转折,说明这些担忧可能是创造的全新生活中的前进步骤。D项“It often comes up when people are at the top of careers they hate. (当人们处于自己讨厌的职业巅峰时,这种情况就会出现。)”起到承上启下作用,说明上文提到的情况。故选D项。

第二节 (共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
56.searching 57.greatest 58.by 59.culturally 60.assumption 61.a 62.what 63.that/which 64.based 65.has developed
故填by。
此处为固定短语take a second look at意为“再看一看”。故填a。
故填what。
故填that/which。
故填based。
此处为谓语动词,根据后文in the last few years可知为现在完成时,主语the British Council 为第三人称单数,助动词用has。故填has developed。

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150词左右;

Years later, when Ian was all grown up, he found the book again.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One Possible Version:
Eventually, Ian’s grandpa passed away. At the funeral, Ian was crying his eyes out. Holding the adventure book tightly in his hand, never had Ian missed his grandpa so much. Memories of them exploring the wood and giggling with merriness came flooding back. Indeed, it was hard for Ian to say goodbye, but he knew that his grandpa was at peace. He had the book they had made together, a reminder of all the adventures they had shared and the love they had for each other.
Years later, when Ian was all grown up, he found the book again. He looked through it and remembered all the good times he had shared with his grandpa. Sometimes, he would still go to the same wood and play the same games alone there. To him, it was a special way to commemorate his late grandpa. Also, at these special moments, Ian realized that even though he had lost his grandpa to Alzheimer’s disease, never would it deprive the deep bond they had for each other. As the sun streamed its last rays through the tree branches, Ian knew somewhere in the heaven, grandpa was looking at him with his reassuring smiles and loving eyes.

D
