In the early 20th century, in a small town nestled along the edge of the Pacific Ocean, a young girl named Ursula grew up surrounded by the quiet company of books and the wild beauty of nature. Her father was an anthropologist (人类学家), a weaver of stories about ancient cultures, and her mother was a writer. In such a household, Ursula learned that words had the power to shape worlds and that imagination was boundless.
As a child, she read plenty of myths, legends, and fairy tales. But unlike most, Ursula didn’t just read stories — she dreamed of creating her own. She would sit for hours, crafting worlds filled with strange creatures, powerful magic, and deep questions about life. Little did she know her imagination would one day reshape how the world thought about science fiction and fantasy.
Years later Ursula published her first major novel, A Wizard of Earthsea. It wasn’t just a fantasy tale; it was a story about balance, identity, and the power of names. The hero, Ged, was not a typical knight or warrior but a flawed boy who had to face his own shadow. Her world of Earthsea was a group of islands filled with magic and wisdom.
But Ursula wasn’t done yet. Her curiosity drove her to explore themes far beyond wizards and dragons. In The Left Hand of Darkness, she imagined a world without fixed (固定的) sexes, forcing readers to question their ideas about identity and society. In The Dispossessed, she tackled capitalism (资本主义) and anarchism (无政府主义) through the lens of two opposite planets. Her stories were as much about the human spirit as they were about alien worlds.
Though she never sought fame, Ursula K. Le Guin became one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. She proved that science fiction and fantasy weren’t just escapism — they were tools to ask the biggest, most profound questions of humanity, and imagination was not just a refuge — it was a revolution. Even now, her books continue to inspire dreamers, thinkers, and storytellers to imagine worlds that challenge and change our own.
4. What does the underlined word “boundless” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Flexible. B. Measurable. C. Unaffected. D. Unlimited.
5. Which of the following statements is true concerning her works mentioned?
A. Ged was a perfect knight in A Wizard of Earthsea.
B. The Left Hand of Darkness challenged readers’ opinions of sexes.
C. She created two similar planets in The Dispossessed.
D. Her stories were more about the human spirit than about alien worlds.
6. What could imagination be considered as according to Ursula’s life and her works?
A. A refuge. B. A revolution.
C. A challenge. D. An inspiration.
7. Which word is NOT suitable to describe Ursula?
A. Curious. B. Imaginative. C. Revolutionary. D. Practical.
【答案】4. D 5. B 6. B 7. D

People with voice disorders can often find it difficult or impossible to speak. That may soon change. A team of engineers has invented a soft, thin, flexible device that can be attached to the skin outside the throat to help people with voice disorders regain their voice function.
The new device can translate muscular movements into speech, enabling people to talk without using their vocal cords (声带). It not only detects the movements of the throat associated with speech, but also uses that movement to generate electricity, meaning the device can be operated without a battery (电池) or being plugged in.
Lead study author Jun Chen, an assistant professor of bioengineering, said the idea for the device arose after he’d spent several hours lecturing and felt his voice becoming tired. He began to imagine a way to solve this problem, making it possible for a person to speak without using their vocal cords.
That thought led Chen and his team to design a soft patch (贴片) that responds to the slight stress placed on it by the movement of throat muscles. The patch responds by producing electrical signals when a person makes the movements needed to talk. They then get fed to a machine-learning algorithm (算法) that translates the pulses into speech. To train the algorithm, each participant in the study repeated five short phrases 100 times each while the program tracked their throat movements. This taught the system to associate specific movements with a given phrase.
In a demonstration of the tech involving eight people without speech problems, the algorithm was about 95% accurate at translating the patch’s electrical pulses into speech.
Although these results are promising, the patch is still in the early stages of development. Its testing was limited to just eight people saying a few phrases, and it has yet to be tested in people with speech disorders. Another problem is that the current manufacturing process for the patch would need to be scaled up and made more efficient for a large number of patches to be produced.
8. What can be learned about the new device from the first two paragraphs?
A. It is self-powered.
B. It can cure voice disorders.
C. It relies heavily on the vocal cords.
D. It can increase the sound of the voice.
9. What inspired Jun Chen to develop this device?
A. His damaged vocal cords.
B. His tiring lecturing experience.
C. His meeting with a bioengineering professor.
D. His desire to help people with voice disorders.
10. What does the underlined word “They” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Throat movements. B. Short phrases.
C. Electrical signals. D. Soft patches.
11. Which aspect of the device is stressed in the last paragraph?
A. Its weaknesses. B. Its functions.
C. Its development. D. Its popularity.

D
The past 50 years have not been good for honeybees. Their numbers have greatly reduced throughout the world, and now a research project by the American University of Maryland is showing that bee lifespans (寿命) have fallen by as much as 50% since the 1970s.
Most previous bee studies have focused on environmental factors. The Maryland scientists, on the other hand, wanted to find out how long bees can survive in a controlled lab environment. They collected bee pupae (蛹) of workers that were less than 24 hours old to study how long they could survive without influence from the outside world.
The scientists placed the bees in customized containers, feeding them different types of water such as tap water, demineralized water, and sugar water. They found that the water type had no effect on lifespans, which were an average of 17.7 days.
Comparing their results with studies from the 2000s, scientists found bees had survived longer back then. Further comparing data from similar studies beginning in 1969, they realized that a honeybee’s average lifespan has been halved. Studies from the 1970s had an average bee lifespan of 34.4 days. The differences seemed related neither to food nor to conditions and surroundings. And because the scientists collected the bees before they became adults, they could rule out external factors such as chemical use or lack of food.
The scientists believe that the cause is in bee genetics (遗传学), and may be related to modern beekeeping practices, especially the speed at which beekeepers replace their bees with new ones. Normally, beekeepers will replace bees when they age naturally and die. But over the past 14 years, reports from American beekeepers have recorded annual losses of bee colonies (群) of 30% - 40%. This might be because beekeepers are replacing their bees more frequently, as the bees die earlier.
Further studies are planned to find out whether this is a global trend, if it can be proved that this is to do with bee genetics, and to find strategies that might slow the losses of bee colonies, and so restore the decreasing lifespans of honeybees.
12. Why did the researchers collect bee pupae rather than adult bees?
A. They were easier to control in the lab.
B. They had the same remaining lifespans.
C. They could be fed with three types of water.
D. They had limited contact with the outside world.
13. What can be concluded from the comparison of the studies over the years?
A. Food for bees was not enough in the 1970s.
B. Surroundings have affected bee lifespans.
C. Earlier bees survived longer.
D. High bee losses have led to fewer beekeepers.
14. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A Effective modern beekeeping practices.
B. Higher replacement rates of aging bees.
C. Challenges American beekeepers are facing.
D. Possible causes of honeybee lifespan fall.
15. What will most probably be done next?
A. Finding other ways to raise bees.
B. Conducting a worldwide survey.
C. Studying more similar studies from the past.
D. Explain the influence of losses of bee colonies.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. D 15. B

【14题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第五段“The scientists believe that the cause is in bee genetics (遗传学), and may be related to modern beekeeping practices, especially the speed at which beekeepers replace their bees with new ones.(科学家认为原因是蜜蜂的遗传学,可能与现代养蜂实践有关,特别是养蜂人更换新蜂的速度)”可知,该段主要讨论了蜜蜂寿命缩短的可能原因,即与蜜蜂的遗传学和现代养蜂实践(特别是更换新蜂的速度)有关。故选D。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Further studies are planned to find out whether this is a global trend, if it can be proved that this is to do with bee genetics, and to find strategies that might slow the losses of bee colonies, and so restore the decreasing lifespans of honeybees.(计划进行进一步的研究,以查明这是否是一个全球趋势,如果这能证明与蜜蜂遗传学有关,并找到可能减缓蜂群损失的策略,从而恢复蜜蜂不断下降的寿命)”可知,下一步计划进行的研究包括查明蜜蜂寿命缩短是否是全球趋势,并寻找可能减缓蜂群损失的策略。这暗示了接下来可能会进行一项全球性的调查或研究。故选B。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One evening, Mike was sitting alone in his bedroom, feeling puzzled and discouraged. His mother had just sent him there and told him to reflect on his recent behaviour. What exactly did he do wrong? As he was still thinking, he heard a knock and then the door was opened. His mother came in and sat down next to him.
“Alright Mike, tell me, do you know what you did wrong?” Mike became more puzzled as he said, “That’s exactly what I have been trying to do. But no matter how hard I try, I can’t seem to think of anything that I may have done wrong.” His mother sighed (叹息).” “Now, now, Mike. Don’t you remember how you shouted at your best friend, and even your head teacher?” “No, that’s not what happened. You must have seen it wrong...” Mike answered quietly, trying to defend himself. “Oh, really? Because it looked like you were angry at something and were taking it out on someone else.”
Mike looked awkward at what his mother told him. Truth be told, when the school announced that there would be a school trip to the zoo on Friday, Mike could hardly sit still all week. He had never been to the zoo before, and the thought of seeing lions, giraffes, and elephants up close made him excited. He even packed his backpack a day earlier, stuffing it with snacks and a notebook to sketch animals.
But on Friday morning, it was raining heavily. “It’ll clear up,” he murmured. When Mike arrived at school, he heard that the trip to the zoo had been cancelled. Mike froze in disbelief. In class, Mrs. Green, the headteacher, tried to cheer everyone up with a group activity, but Mike couldn’t focus. When she asked him to join, he yelled, “What’s the point? This day’s already ruined!” His best friend, Tom, whispered, “It’s not her fault,” but Mike glared at him. “You think this is fine? I bet you don’t even care about the zoo!” he said sharply.

1. 续写词数为150左右;

The next morning, Mike hurried to school, anxious but determined.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version
He told everything to his mother. His mother, listening patiently with a smile, offered wisdom. She explained that it was natural for humans to get angry sometimes, but taking it out on others was really harmful to our personal relationships. Mike felt regretful and guilty, realizing that his behaviour had hurt the people he cared about. But he was at a loss what to do. “Apology is the first step. They care for you and they will forgive you,” His mother suggested. Nodding his head, Mike made up his mind to make things right.
The next morning, Mike hurried to school, anxious but determined. He began by going over to Tom. “I’ m terribly sorry for the way I behaved that day,” he said quietly but sincerely, looking his best friend in the eye. Tom was deeply touched by his frankness and honesty, so he forgave Mike without hesitation. The relaxation the first apology gave Mike filled him with confidence to find Mrs Green, who didn’t say much but smiled with relief and patted Mike on the shoulder. Mike felt he did the right thing, and for the first time in days, he felt a sense of peace.

Years later, Ursula published her first major novel, A Wizard of Earthsea.
4 What does the underlined word “boundless” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Flexible. B. Measurable. C. Unaffected. D. Unlimited.
D. Practical.
C
A Throat movements.
The scientists believe that the cause is in bee genetics (遗传学) and may be related to modern beekeeping practices, especially the speed at which beekeepers replace their bees with new ones.
A. Effective modern beekeeping practices.
