Last week my youngest son and I visited my father at his new home in Tucson, Arizona. He moved there a few years ago, and I was eager to see his new place and meet his friends.
My earliest memories of my father are a tall, handsome, successful man devoted to his work and his family, but uncomfortable with his children. As a child I loved him; as a school girl and young adult, I feared him and felt bitter about him. He seemed unhappy with me unless I got straight A’s and unhappy with my boyfriends if their fathers were not as “successful” as he was. Whenever I went out with him on weekends, I used to struggle to think up things to say, feeling on guard.
On the first day of my visit, we went out with one of my father’s friends for lunch at an outdoor cafe. We walked along that afternoon, did some shopping, ate on the street table, and laughed over my son’s funny facial expressions. Gone was my father’s critical air and strict rules. Who was this person I knew as my father, who seemed so friendly and interesting to be around? What had held him back before?
The next day dad took out his childhood pictures and told me quite a few stories about his own childhood. Although our times together became easier over the years, I never felt closer to him at that moment. After so many years, I’m at last seeing another side of my father. And in so doing, I’m delighted with my new friend. My dad, in his new home in Arizona, is back to me from where he was.

A. More critical and strict. B. More talkative.
C. Gentle and friendly. D. Proud and hard-working.
44. With whom did the author and her son have lunch at the outdoor cafe?
A. Her father. B. One of her father’s friends.
C. Her friend. D. Her father and one of her father’s friends.
45. The underlined words “my new friend” in the last paragraph refer to ________.
A. the author’s son B. the author’s father
C. the friend of the author’s father D. the cafe owner

Chinese hit video game Black Myth: Wukong has taken the gaming world by storm, selling more than 10 million copies across all platforms in just three days after its release on Aug 20, according to the game’s developer Game Science.
The game is inspired by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. In it, players take the role of the Destined One,a monkey following in the footsteps of the Monkey King on a journey to collect six Relics that once belonged to Sun Wukong and challenge the Celestial Court (天庭) .
Drawing on a rich herițage of nearly 1,000 years of Chinese culture, the game’s story-line and characters have proven difficult to understand for many players, especially those from Western countries. For instance, a player shared on social media that their lack of familiarity with Journey to the West led to them consistently missing hidden treasures, finally resulting in repeated failures during a boss fight in Chapter 2. At the same time, some players feel overwhelmed (不知所措的) by names like Erlang Shen and Lingxuzi, which can be difficult to pronounce for those unfamiliar with Chinese phonetics.
To bridge these cultural divides, numerous Western fans have devoted great time and effort. One enthusiast wrote a 200-page outline detailing Sun Wukong’s abilities across all 100 chapters of Journey to the West. Another fan named Cas immersed himself in the epic by checking out forums (论坛), TV shows, anime (动漫), manga (漫画) and online encyclopedias (百科全书) .
Through this process, Western players have not only refined their gaming skills but also developed a deeper appreciation for Sun Wukong and Journey to the West.
“Although many people might want to compare Sun Wukong to Western superheroes,I believe that they are different, especially in terms of their moral codes,” said Patrick McCarthy from the US. “Sun Wukong gives off a carefree, independent and chaotic (混乱的) nature, unlimited by the need to set a good example for others like Spider-Man or Superman, who by contrast follow rigid (严格的) principles like with great power comes great responsibility’.”
Journey to the West offers a comprehensive narrative that covers a very dangerous journey, numerous encounters and the exploration of various cultures. Its diversity makes it a rich source for diverse storytelling types and cultural backgrounds, said China Daily.
Perhaps these are some of the key reasons why Journey to the West has been translated into over a dozen languages, with more than 60 versions available worldwide.
46. What has made it challenging for some Western players to understand the game’s story-line and characters?
A. The overuse of hidden treasures.
B. The large number of characters: one game.
C. Unfamiliarity with Chinese culture and mythology.
D. Difficulty in understanding the Chinese phonetics.
47. What does the underlined word “refined” in paragraph 5 most likely mean?
A. Improved. B. Changed. C. Displayed. D. Shared.
48. According to Patrick McCarthy, how is Sun Wukong different from Western superheroes?
A. He has greater power.
B. He uses fewer weapons.
C. He values personal freedom above all else.
D. He is more responsible for what he does.
49 Which of the following best describes Black Myth: Wukong?
A. Controversial. B. Successful. C. Experimental. D. Costly.
50. Where is this passage most likely from?
A. A storybook B. A guide book C. A diary D. A magazine
D
The baby monkey is much more developed at birth than the human baby. Almost from the moment it is born, the baby monkey can move around and hold tightly to its mother. During the first few days of its life the baby will approach and hold onto almost any large, warm, and soft object in its environment, particularly if that object also gives it milk. After a week or so, however, the baby monkey begins to avoid newcomers and focuses its attentions on “mother” ---- the real mother or the mother-substitute(母亲替代物).
During the first two weeks of its warmth is perhaps the most important psychological(心理的) thing that a monkey mother has to give to its baby. The Harlows, a couple who are both psychologists, discovered this fact by offering baby monkeys a choice of two types of mother-substitutes ---- one covered with cloth and one made of bare wire. If the two artificial mothers were both the same temperature, the little monkeys always preferred the cloth mother. However, if the wire model was heated, while the cloth model was cool, for the first two weeks after birth the baby monkeys picked the warm wire mother-substitutes as their favorites. Thereafter they switched and spent most of their time on the more comfortable cloth mother
Why is cloth preferable to bare wire? Something that the Harlows called contact(接触的) comfort seems to be the answer, and a most powerful influence it is. Baby monkeys spend much of their time rubbing against their mothers’ skins, putting themselves in as close contact with the parent as they can. Whenever the young animal is frightened, disturbed, or annoyed, it typically rushes to its mother and rubs itself against her body. Wire doesn’t“rub”as well as does soft wire cloth. Prolonged(长时间的)“contact comfort” with a cloth mother appears to give the babies confidence and is much more rewarding to them than is either warmth or milk.
According to the Harlows, the basic quality of a baby’s love for its mother is trust. If the baby is put into an unfamiliar playroom without its mother, the baby ignores the toys no matter how interesting they might be. It screams in terror and curls up into a fury little ball. If its cloth mother is now introduced into the playroom, the baby rushes to it and holds onto it for dear life. After a few minutes of contact comfort, it obviously begins to feel more secure. It then climbs down from the mother-substitute and begins to explore the toys, but often rushes back for a deep embrace(拥抱)as if to make sure that its mother is still there and that all is well. Bit by bit its fears of the new environment are gone and it spends more and more time playing with the toys and less and less time holding on to its “mother.”
51. Psychologically, what does the baby monkey desire most during the first two weeks of its life?
A. Warmth B. Milk C. Contact D. Trust
52. After the first two weeks of their life, baby moneys prefer the cloth mother to the wire mother because the former is ________.
A larger in size B. closer to them
C. less frightening and less disturbing D. more comfortable to rub against
53. What does the baby monkey probably gain from prolonged “contact comfort”?
A. Attention B. Softness C. Confidence D. Interest
54. It can be inferred that when the baby monkey feels secure, ________.
A. it frequently rushes back for a deep embrace when exploring the toys
B. it spends more time screaming to get rewards
C. it is less attracted to the toys though they are interesting
D. it cares less about whether its mother is still around
55. The main purpose of the passage is to ________.
A. give the reasons of the experiment
B. present the findings of the experiment
C. introduce the method of the experiment
D. describe the process of the experiment

Wang Yi, who can’t walk or even communicate normally, has written eight books with one movable finger. Wang was born with cerebral palsy (脑瘫) in Jiangsu Province in 1989. Restricted to a wheelchair as she began to grow up, she even has difficulty eating and bathing.
However, Wang and her parents have stayed roseate throughout. Since childhood, Wang’s parents have been telling her to regard herself as a normal person even if she is physically disabled. She practiced performing daily activities repeatedly. With her parents’ help, she learned to live with her physical disability and aimed to be an out-standing writer. Before the age of 17, Wang completed nine years of compulsory education and acquired much literary knowledge. With the encouragement of her teacher, she became more determined to pursue her dream of writing.
Literature has become a medium for her to communicate with the world. Sitting in a wheelchair, Wang pursues her dream in her own way. Though she only has one movable finger on her right hand, she has managed to write eight books with a total of more than a million words. “For me, writing is not a tool to make a living, but my necessary life mode. Only when I am involved in writing can I feel complete.” she stressed.
Wang hopes that every disabled person can live without discrimination. “The sense of value and dignity comes from the efforts of the disabled themselves, as well as from social recognition, acceptance and equal treatment.” She also hopes that readers can experience the strength of life, the warmth of family and the beauty of the times when they are reading her works.

C. Gentle and friendly. D. Proud and hard-working.
44. With whom did the author and her son have lunch at the outdoor cafe?
A. Her father. B. One of her father’s friends.
C. Her friend. D. Her father and one of her father’s friends.
45. The underlined words “my new friend” in the last paragraph refer to ________.

49. Which of the following best describes Black Myth: Wukong?
A. Controversial. B. Successful. C. Experimental. D. Costly.

A. larger in size B. closer to them
C. less frightening and less disturbing D. more comfortable to rub against
