In dreaming up the programme Tennis and Literacy for Youth, as a mother, I had hoped to share two of my passions, tennis and reading, with children. Throughout the year, I had advertised for participants at local elementary schools and volunteers at local high schools. With the help of kind people, I applied for money. I was even able to secure a camp site for the programme.
But on the first day of camp, in spite of my careful planning, things did not go the way I had hoped. Hector and Adrian exchanged blows with their racquets (球拍). Hector struggled to his feet moments later, covering a bloody nose with one hand. Georgie and Eduardo threw balls at each other. Then during the reading time, I raced from joyless child to demanding child, unable to convince even one to open a book. They would rather be watching Nickelodeon at home, Mylea told me, than “learning stupid tennis and reading boring books”.
That evening, exhausted as I was, I called my volunteers together for a meeting, and redesigned the entire curriculum. We created a good fellow system, where each volunteer paired with a camper to help him or her during reading time. To emphasize praise and progress, we established weekly prize ceremonies, presenting awards for most improved reading, tennis and behavior.
In the following days, with the chaos and the schedule changes and the meetings, these children, once in bad mood during reading time, untouched books in their laps, began to find joy in reading a story and playing tennis.
One day, Mylea shut the book and asked me, “Can I take this to read it to my mom tonight?” Looking up at her eager face, I couldn’t help myself. I jumped to my feet and wrapped her in a hug, lifting her right off the ground. “It’s all yours!” I overjoyed.

When Jason Esterhuizen was 23, an accident left him blind. Now, eight years later, special glasses and a device inside his brain are allowing him to make out some details of the world around him.
In 2011, Mr. Esterhuizen and his wife moved to California in order to take part in a study that offered the possibility of helping him with his vision. The study was being run by UCLA and a company called Second Sight, which was to test an unusual medical product called Orion.
There are three important pieces to Orion. One part looks like a pair of glasses. But the glasses are really for holding a camera on the person's head. They also send wireless signals. The second part of Orion is a tiny computer that processes the video from the camera. The third part is a tiny device - an implant - that is inserted directly into the patient's brain. That's what's new and different about Orion.
For years, Second Sight and other companies have been working on ways to get visual information into the brains of blind people. Most of the efforts have focused on connecting to the retina(视网膜)-a layer at the back of the eye that turns light into, electrical signals for the brain. So far Second Sight has given about 350 people retinal implants.
But a retinal implant wasn't possible for Mr. Esterhuizen. That's why Orion's direct connection to the brain was especially interesting to him. As Dr. Nader Pouratian, the surgeon who gave Mr. Esterhuizen his implant. said, “With the current system we're testing, you don't even need to have eyes for the device to work. ”
“Now I can do things that I couldn't do before, ” Mr. Esterhuizen said. “I can sort the laundry, find my way in lighted hallways without using a cane, and cross the street more safely. It's making my little much easier. ”
32. What is the goal of the study?
A. To take the place of retina implant.
B. To recover the blind people's vision.
C. To promote the unusual medical product.
D. To check the effectiveness of the new product.
33. What has Second Sight done for the blind people according to the 4th paragraph?
A Implanting retina for the blind people.
B. Trying to send electrical signals to the retina.
C. Developing tiny computers for the disabled.
D. Making Orion more popular to the blind people.
34. Which of the following statements agree with the passage?
A. Mr. Esterhuizen had a retinal implant.
B. Mr. Esterhuizen benefited from Orion
C. Mr. Esterhuizen took a job of sorting the laundry.
D. Mr. Esterhuizen can live a normal life as others now.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. The Disabled Can Recover
B A Study Offers the Possibility of Vision
C. Retina Can Be Connected by Advanced Technology
D. A Medical Product Brings Simple Vision to The Blind

And you’d better ask your parents before adopting a dog, anyway!”added Ms Preston.
As soon as she got home. Caroline started talking to her mom about Jinks. “Well, I sure hope Jinks gets better soon,” said Mom. “Ms Preston told me the shelter is about to close.”“What?”asked Caroline, her voice rising with alarm. “I ran into Ms. Preston yesterday. She said the shelter can’t afford to stay open.” Mom explained. “Oh, no!” Caroline cried. “But the shelter can’t close. What will happen to all of the animals there?” Suddenly, Caroline brightened. “My friends and I will figure out how to save the shelter.”
The kids agreed to hold a Save the Shelter Fair. They met all week to plan the fair and each of them prepared something special. I was in the bicycle business for thirty-five years. Twenty of the thirty-five years, I ran my own business. After I decided to sell my business, I became an advisor. I worked as an advisor for five years and then I retired. The retirement community I live in requires one to be forty-eight years or older. In the community I engage in many activities, oil painting, watercolor painting, stained glass projects. My major activity, however, is golf. Weather permitting, I play every day. We have a golf course in the community, and since I played more often than I used to before I retired, my game has really improved.

A. Implanting retina for the blind people.
B. A Study Offers the Possibility of Vision
C. Retina Can Be Connected by Advanced Technology
D. A Medical Product Brings Simple Vision to The Blind

Caroline’s Treats
Every Saturday, Caroline came to the Westport Animal Shelter to visit Jinks. “Can I take Jinks home with me?”Caroline asked Ms Preston, the woman in charge of the shelter. “He can’t go home with anyone quite yet,” said Ms Preston. “His leg is injured, and it will take time to heal.
Caroline decided to bake some cookies to sell on the fair. “What should I call my cookies?”Caroline asked her mom, who was helping her. “How about Caroline’s Treats?”said Mom.
It was beautiful, sunny on the day of the fair. Everything was a big success—except Caroline’s bake sale!No one was buying Caroline’s Treats!
Just then, Mr. Larson came by with his dog, Bowser. Caroline threw Bowser a piece of her cookies, and in no time, Bowser finished it and was looking around for more.
“Great doggie treats!”said Mr. Larson “I’ll take a bag. No, three bags.” Mr. Larson must have told other people about the treats, because before long, more and more people with dogs were stopping by.
