Jim Glaub and Dylan Parker had just been handed the keys to their new Manhattan apartment on 22nd Street when the outgoing tenant(房客) said something curious, “Just so you know, there's this thing where letters addressed to Santa come to the apartment. The previous tenants received the mail too. It has been coming for years and no one knows why.”
Glaub and Parker settled into their new home, and for the first two years only a few letters from kids or parents asked“Santa” for gifts they could not otherwise afford. Then in the months leading to Christmas 2010, their mailbox was filled with letters to Santa every day. They responded to as many as they could, writing notes, and even buying gifts. Glaub, of course, is not Santa, They could do only so much.
But one night, when he and Parker threw a 1960s-themed Christmas party, a solution appeared. Guests noticed the hundreds of letters they’ d yet to act upon and asked about them. Glaub told them the story and his guests were intrigued. “A lot of people were like, ‘I’ ll take a letter. I' ll satisfy it,'” And so was born Miracle on 22nd Street.
To spread the word, they started a website, miracleon22ndstreet, com, and a Facebook page. Working with other nonprofits that help those in need, they invited families from around the country to go online and request gifts for their children. Likewise, donors, also known as“elves”, can sign up to buy gifts for a child or family, accompanied by a signed note with Elf before their name, such as Elf Jim or Elf Jody.
Last year, Glaub and Miracle on 22nd Street helped more than 800 families. Glaub no longer wonders why the letters come to the apartment. Putting in the long hours to help the families is what it's all about for him. “It's part of Christmas for me,” he says. “It wouldn't be Christmas without it.”

Living in a city is a well-known risk factor for developing a mental disorder, while living close to nature is largely beneficial for mental health and the brain. A central brain region, the amygdala(大脑杏仁核) involved in stress processing, has been shown to be less activated during stress in people living in rural areas, compared to those who live in cities, hinting at the potential benefits of nature. “But so far the hen-and-egg problem could not be resolved, namely whether nature actually caused the effects in the brain or whether the particular individuals chose to live in rural or urban regions,” says Sonja Sudimac.
To achieve causal evidence, the researchers from the group examined brain activity in regions involved in stress processing in 63 healthy volunteers before and after a one-hour walk in Grunewald forest or a shopping street with traffic in Berlin. The results revealed that activity in the amygdala decreased after the walk in nature, suggesting that nature triggers beneficial effects on brain regions related to stress.
“The results support the previously assumed positive relationship between nature and brain health, but this is the first study to prove the causal link. Interestingly, the brain activity after the urban walk in these regions remained stable and showed no increases, which argues against a commonly held view that urban exposure causes additional stress,” explains Simone Kühn, head of the group,
The authors show that nature has a positive impact on brain regions involved in stress processing and that it can already be observed after a one-hour walk. This contributes to the understanding of how our physical living environment affects brain and mental health. Even a short exposure to nature decreases amygdala activity, suggesting that a walk in nature could serve as a preventive measure against developing mental health problems and reducing the potentially disadvantageous impact of the city on the brain.
In order to investigate beneficial effects of nature in different populations and age groups, the researchers are currently working on a study examining how a one-hour walk in natural versus urban environments impacts stress in mothers and their babies.
28. What does Sonja Sudimac mean when she talks about the hen-and-egg problem?
A. Living in rural areas can influence brain activity.
B People living in cities are more likely to have mental health problems.
C. The relationship between stress and health does not need to be examined.
D. It is hard to determine the effect of living environment on mental well-being.
29. How did the researchers gather evidence for the study?
A. By citing experts' opinions.
B. By studying an existing theory.
C. By interviewing healthy participants.
D. By comparing the amygdala activity of volunteers.
30. What does Simone Kühn's explanation challenge about urban environments?
A. The idea that cities are naturally stressful.
B. The belief that city living benefits brain health.
C. The claim that rural living reduces brain activity.
D. The notion that a one-hour walk greatly changes brain activity.
31. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The focus of the follow-up research.
B. The benefits of spending time in natural environments.
C. The ongoing research on the effects of urban life on stress.
D. The importance of nature in reducing stress for mothers and babies.

On a soulless roundabout at a motorway crossroads, next door to a Burger King and opposite McDonald's, stands a newcomer to the world of fast-food in France: a boulangerie, or French bakery. With sufficient parking, the boulangerie offers its car-borne customers a variety of choices. The boulangerie is traditionally a feature of the village square or high street. Yet now, it is taking off as an out-of-town drive-in or drive-to experience.
It is an unexpected time for the baguette(法式长棍面包) to spread, let alone on the country's city edges./ Rising energy and flour prices have pushed the price of the humble stick over the symbolic one euro in some places. Older folks still recall the time in the 1970s when it went for one French franc. Yet in 2022 more new boulangeries opened their doors in France than closed, according to Altares, a research group. Across the country 2,538 new bakeries set up shop last year. In the Paris region, the fastest growth has taken place not in the capital's built-up walkable centre, but its low-density(低密度的) outer suburbs— meeting the need of the motorist.
Marie Blachere, a chain of boulangeries which started their business on car-accessible edge- of-town sites, now has over 700 outlets across France; 70 opened last year alone. It provides industrial-scale kitchens for hand-made baguettes, made from dough prepared, kneaded and baked on the site, a condition in France for use of the label boulangerie. With turnover of over€550 m, it ranks as one of the top ten fast-food chains in France. In the city of Chartres, Cyril Avert boulangerie serves baguettes to motorists at the wheel, as a pure drive-through service. So does Jules & John, in over 20 towns in France.
The drive-in or drive-to fashion is not welcome news for the boulangeries on narrow town- centre streets, many of which are struggling with rising costs. But it does reflect a stubborn fact about France, which those who govern from its city centres ignore. In 2021, 82% of French households owned at least one vehicle, and many in outer suburbs and semi-rural parts depend on it for work. The French remain as attached to their daily, or even twice-daily, baguette as they do to their use of the car.
32. Who are the target customers of the recently-opened baguette bakeries?
A. Hurrying drivers. B. Leisurely motorists.
C. Fashionable youths. D. Out-of-town tourists.
33. Why are many brands of boulangeries mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To introduce brands of boulangeries.
B. To emphasize profits from boulangeries.
C. To demonstrate boulangeries’ expansion.
D. To present conditions for opening a new boulangerie.
34 What might be the author's attitude towards the drive-in or drive-to practice?
A. Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Favorable. D. Objective.
35. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Boulangeries: Suffering Booming Price
B. Baguettes and Vehicles: Going Hand in Hand
C. Boulangeries: Springing Up in Unexpected Places
D. Baguettes: the Symbol of Traditional French Cuisine
第二节(共5 小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
A majority of the people do not read the classics. Their reasons begin with the language being too difficult and end with the storyline too distant to the present context. 36 Nevertheless, it is a gradual affair. We begin as acquaintances(泛泛之交) and eventually become close friends with private jokes between us. So how does one approach a classic?
37 We get in: it's hard to power through confusion. It doesn't feel great when a book makes you feel confused. Every reader has to start somewhere. Never beat yourself up for not knowing something, Instead, be proud of yourself for trying, and get excited about all the new things you' ll learn.
Research, research, research. Before you turn to Page One, do some digging. Researching the author— and the time and place they were writing about— can help you situate yourself during tricky passages. The author's experience, viewpoint, and historical context might help you make the connections you might not have otherwise. 38
Just pick the book up. This step is self-explanatory. While it's not hard to just pick a book up, we know how difficult it can be to convince yourself to do so. 39 Take a deep breath, then leap onto the deck(甲板) of Melville's Pequod or step cautiously through the gates of Castle Dracula.
Remember: there is no right answer. 40 There is no defining interpretation, no singular, exact answer. Your goal as a reader is to discover what aspects and insights are meaningful to you. Enjoy the process. Consider what confuses you, read with intention, and think critically. Even if your interpretation of the work isn't quite perfect, it is still valuable!
A. There are other better books.
B. Don't be afraid to be confused.
C. There is no perfect way to read a classic text.
D. Love for classics is obviously not at first sight.
E. Remind yourself that it's a new learning opportunity.
F. Understanding the classics requires memorizing historical facts.
G. After all, a little homework goes a long way in making sense of the classics.

Tom could communicate well with other people through the computer or even on the phone, but when it came to making public presentations, he was hopeless. He was aware that people at conferences would count up the times he said such things as“what I really meant to say was” when he got nervous.
Tom was an expert in Reality Robotics Company. His boss had asked him to do something that he was absolutely scared about. The next month he would be presenting on behalf of his company, and there would be a lot of people, and his boss, who had never attended Tom's presentations, wanted to impress the audience with the innovative work that the company was doing. Tom knew his boss's respect for him would plummet(坠落) if he said that he could not do it. So, he worked like crazy on the task.
One day, he felt a great need to relax. He turned on the TV. He laughed, and smiled through the first show, making him feel a little better. But it was the second show that really got to him, where the ventriloquist(腹语术表演者) Arthur worked with his dummy(假人). This really provided him with an inspiration for how he was going to make his much-feared presentation a success.
The next day, he organized a meeting of the people that had the skills he needed, and, of course, his boss. When he explained what he wanted to do, he could sense that everyone was with him on this plan. But a lot of work had to be done for the object of the plan to be completed.
It was the day of the presentation. Tom was somewhat nervous, but nowhere near to the extent that he usually was for just such a situation. And they had to get to their destination early, for what needed to be done had to be completed before the audience knew what was going on.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
At long last, the presentation that everyone had been eagerly awaiting started.
As Tom walked to the front, he appeared every bit the same as the presenter.

作文续写
The much-anticipated presentation started. The audience quieted, their curiosity piqued by the unusual setup. A figure draped in shadows appeared, capturing everyone's attention. Tom, from behind the scenes, controlled the robot, delivering the presentation through it. The audience was spellbound, marveling at the technology that made it seem as if the robot itself was talking with passion about the company's latest innovations in robotics. At the end of the speech, the presenter said, "To conclude today's presentation, we'll invite a mysterious guest here. You can never guess who he is!"
Tom walked onto the stage, looking exactly the same as the presenter, The crowd erupted into applause, both for the technological prowess demonstrated and for the clever way Tom had overcome his personal challenge. He stood beside the robot, confidently concluding the presentation with a Q&A session. Tom's boss watched from the audience, a broad smile spreading across his face. The event was a mayor success, not only for the company's public image but also for Tom, who had found a creative solution to his greatest fear.
