At the age of 16,I lived with my parents at an institute 18 miles from Durban with no neighbors around. One
day my father needed a ride to town for a conference.Meanwhile,my mother gave a list of groceries and my father
asked me to take care of several pending chores, such as getting the car serviced. When I dropped my father off that
morning,he said,"I will meet you here at 5:00 p.m.,and we will go home together."
After hurriedly completing my chores,I went straight to the nearest movie theater.I got so engrossed that I
forgot the time.By the time I ran to the garage and got the car and hurried to where my father was waiting for me,it
was almost 6:00 p.m.He anxiously asked me,"Why were you late?"I was so ashamed of telling him I was watching
a movie that I said,"The car wasn't ready,so I had to wait,"not realizing that he had already called the garage. When
he caught me in the lie,he said,"There's something wrong in the way I brought you up that didn't give you the
confidence to tell me the truth. In order to figure out where I went wrong with you,I'm gofng to walk home 18 miles
and think about it.”
So,dressed in his suit and dress shoes,he began to walk home in the dark on mostly unpaved, unlit roads.I
couldn't leave him,so for five-and-a-half hours I drove behind him, watching my father go through this great pain
for a stupid lie that I uttered.
I decided then and there that I was never going to lie again.I often think about that episode and wonder,if he
had punished me the way we punish our children, whether I would have learned a lesson at all.I don't think so.I
would have suffered the punishment and gone on doing the same thing. But this single action was so powerful that it
is still as if it happened yesterday.

Extremely authentic-looking prosthetic eyes can now be 3D-printed in a fraction of the time it would
normally take to produce the eyes by hand, scientists demonstrate in a new study.
The new technology can create a prosthetic eye in just 90 minutes, while it would normally take 8 hours for a
skilled technician,or ocularist,to produce one by hand. The 3D-printed eyes require 5 times less labor to make than
traditional methods, the scientists behind the technology wrote in a new paper published in the journal Nature
Communications.
The 3D-printed eyes also look more natural than traditional prostheses;this could help improve a patient's self-
confidence in using the devices."Patients are very conscious about wearing a prosthesis, and they don't want others
第3页(共8页)
to notice,"Johann Reinhard, lead study author and a researcher at the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics
Research in Germany, told us."With these more realistic eyes,it might help them to participate more in society,"he
said.
The new printing approach involves taking a specialized image of a patient's empty eye socket and of their
healthy eye. These images are then processed and used to draft blueprints that can be sent to be 3D-printed in the lab.
These 3D-printed eyes closely replicate the color, size and structure of the patient's healthy eye and are particularly
good at capturing the colored part of the eye, known as the iris, and the white part of the eye, called the sclera.Once
finished, the eyes take 15 to 30 minutes to be installed by an ocularist,Reinhard said.
"About 80%of adults in need of prosthetic eyes could theoretically have one made this way, either due to a
birth defect that causes an eye to be small or missing or because they've lost an eye,"the team said."However, this
wouldn't be possible for all patients, such as those who have a very complex eye socket,as the software wouldn't be
able to find a matching shape for the prosthetic eye,"Reinhard said.
"More data are needed to see if this technique could also be used to make prosthetic eyes for children, which
would require more regulation,"Reinhard said.
28.Which of the following words can be best used to describe the 3D-printed eyes?
A.Eco-friendly.B Time-consuming.C.Fit-of-all.D.Realistic-looking.
29.How does the author develop his idea mainly in Paragraph 2?
A.By clarifying an idea.
B.By citing the examples.
C.By making a comparison.
D.By providing evidence.
30.What can be concluded from the passage about a 3D-printed eye?
A.The patients prefer to show off their prosthetic eyes.
B.These 3D-printed eyes are distinct from a healthy one in the irisand sclera.
C.Those in need of a prosthetic eye can't necessarily have ane.
D.The installment of one is 5 times faster than a traditional prosthetic eye.
31.Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.3D-printed Eyes-a Better Alternative
B.3D-printed Eyes-a Source of.Confidence
C.3D Printing-a cutting-edge technology for the blind
D.3D Printing-the Hope for Physically-challenged People

It is a general belief among academics that the humanities(are in crisis.According to Harvard
historian James Hankins, part of the problem is the dominance of"critical"reading over"primary"reading.Primary
reading takes a text at face value and simply tries to understand what the author intended to say.Critical reading
assumes an author's statements can never be taken at face value.Instead, they must be"seen through"to expose the
text's real meaning, which is determined in line with this or that fashionable theory.
Mr.Hankins says primary reading"must be recovered"for higher education in the humanities to be effective.I
would go further.Primary reading isn't important only for the humanities, but for education more generally. The
restoration of primary reading could be a crucial weapon in fighting the "idle talk"that troubles American society.
Idle talk was philosopher Martin Heidegger's term for inauthentic discourse()It involves adopting and
circulating others'opinions about something without ever personally engaging that thing for yourself.People engaged
in idle talk speak in line with expectations for their particular role. They hold and express the opinions a person in
their role is expected to hold.
Idle talk can be harmless. Each year my mother forms strong opinions about which films should win Academy
Awards without seeing any of them, after reading articles by critics she favors. But idle talk can also be dangerous.

Consider joumalism. The norm nowadays is for one reporter to break a story, followed by dozens or hundreds of
journalists recycling that content. They may add a little spin of their own but rarely look into the issue for
themselves-even when this would require but a few clicks. Some journalists even just search social media for the
story of the day and rewrite it in their own words.
It could be argued that social media has contributed to the popularization of idle talk.Authentic discourse
requires time, effort and good-faith engagement, but social media tends to encourage the opposite.Social media raises
this voice, pushing it into user feeds 24/7.We hear about everything, and we can't hear about anything without also
being told what opinion we should have about it.Opinions before facts;know what to think about something before
actually looking into it for yourself. And really, why even bother with that?
Primary reading isn't only something the humanities need. Our entire culture needs its value to be recognized
and restored.
32.What do we know from the first two paragraphs?
A.Critical reading falls into an evident decline.
B.Critical reading leads to the crisis in the humanities.
C.Primary reading fails to expose the real meaning.
D.Primary reading should be attached more significance to.
33.What does the underlined word "spin"in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Interpretation.B.Intervention.
C.Interaction.
D.Investigation.
34.What does the author think of social media?
A.It tends to encourage high engagement.B.It promotes the spread of idle talk.
C.It offers people facts instead of opinions.D.It advocates independent thinking ability.
35.What's the author's advice for readers?
A.To focus more on fauts.
B.To get off social media.
C.To gain an insight into idle talk.
D.To read original texts merely.

How Loneliness is Killing Us
Loneliness is absolutely an epidemic in our society, but it's been growing for decades.Loneliness is the sense
that"I am less connected to other people than I want to be".36 And that makes it different from isolation
()I can deliberately isolate myself and feel great about that, but only you can tell if you're lonely.
37 In some studies,as many as 60%of people will say that they feel lonely much of the time.Young
adults aged 16 to 24 are the loneliest age group.Loneliness was on the rise from the 1950s in part because of the rise
of private care. There are many factors that are responsible for that.
We've become a much more mobile society where the netwerks of family and friends get loose as people move
for jobs and other kinds of opportunities like education.38 But then it tears us away from the communities
we are born into and spend much of our lives creating. And that was made worse as the digital revolution gave us
more and more screens to look at.
Research finds loneliness is dangerous to our health.39 In addition, people who are lonely in late
life have more rapid brain decline.
The choice we can make to keep us on a good path of wellbeing is to invest in our relationships with other
people.40You belong.You matter.You're connected.
A.It's a very subjeetive experience.

第四部分写作(满分25分)
"Judy, hurry up!Let's go to the beach!"That was a familiar morning call from my older brother,Sirin.Hearing
that,I would spring up quickly and we would set off on our journey.Raised by our grandparents in Savanna,we
experienced our happiest moments there.Nestled between the mountains and the sea, with its lush green trees,crystal-
like ocean, and clear blue sky,Savanna was like a small village from a fairy tale.
Sirin and I often enjoyed the gentle sea breeze as we explored the breathtaking coast, with the endless, open
water beside us and the vast, clear sky overhead. We felt a sense of freedom to wander the sandy beach or experience
the excitement of sailing out to sea, delighting in the awe-inspiring beauty of nature's wonders. When we grew tired,
leisurely walking on the sof, warm sands to collect unique, fascinating seashells brought us a different kind of
peaceful joy.The friendly, warmhearted villagers treated us like family, often sharing their freshly-caught seafood
with us.
Three years later,we were taken away from the village to receive a better education by our parents.Occupied
with our study,we rarely visited our beloved grandparents, only calling them occasionally. We gradually adapted to
the fast-paced city life and found it more efficient and convenient.Whenever we had an appetite for seafood, our dad
would simply order it through his phone, and it would be delivered to our doorstep within minutes. In addition to
seafood,we could order anything our hearts desired,no matter how late it was. What we loved most was the
convenience of not needing to wash the dishes after eating,as they were all disposable, designed for single use.
However, deep within us,we sometimes longed for the simple pleasures of village life.We were told by our
grandparents that more and more tourists flooded into the village, which strengthened our desire to return. So,when
the eagerly-awaited summer vacation arrived this year,we finally made our dream trip back to our childhood paradise.
After greeting our grandparents with hugs and smiles,we eagerly headed towards the sun-kissed seaside to relive our
cherished memories.
