WORKING IN THE UK
Many international students learning English in the UK have the question of whether they’ll be allowed to work in the UK during their studies. Here English UK may help you.

In both cases, students can work full time during the holidays and after the course until the end of the visa period.

Zarela Mosquera, a native of Brazil, had developed a deep affection for art as a child. However, she never truly regarded it as a possible career path. Astonishingly, her parents, contrary to her expectations, wholeheartedly encouraged her to apply to art schools. Eventually, she was accepted into the Rhode Island School of Design to study industrial design. The academic journey was far from easy, filled with demanding tasks such as metalworking, woodworking, and model making. There was even a phase when she spent an entire month just drawing cubes, which made her question her choice. But she soldiered on and soon began working on more captivating projects.
Currently, Mosquera serves as a design strategist for a prominent architecture and interior design company in Washington, D. C. In addition to her professional commitments, she harbors a long-standing and profound interest in public art. This year, she played a crucial role in creating and designing “The Walkway” for the D. C. government. This unique structure, an 11-meter-long tunnel-like creation, narrows sharply as one walks through. Bright lights change colors along the path. On the walls are images of people. Voices and city sounds are played through speakers installed in the walkway. At first, the recorded conversations and street noise and pictures have a positive feel. But the images and audio increase in intensity along the path. The experience becomes dark and violent in the middle part of the walkway. “The purpose of showing these two different human emotions and human reactions is to allow people to reflect upon a variety of different expressions, so that brings up the conversation as to what is the right way to talk to each other in a public space. Should we talk to each other at all? So people are really questioning that. And that’s what public art is meant to do,” said Mosquera.
For Mosquera, the physical experience of this structure has a far greater impact than merely viewing it on paper. In her free time, she delights in developing public art, firmly believing that the best way to learn is through hands-on work and taking on as many projects as possible. Industrial design, in her view, makes her a jack of all trades.
4. Which one is the task Zarela Mosquera had to do during her industrial design course?
A. Writing essays. B. Doing carpentry work.
C. Performing on stage. D. Giving presentations.
5. What do we know about “The Walkway”?
A. There are sounds coming from passers-by.
B. The images on the walls are famous figures.
C. It is intended to make people think about public communication.
D. The whole structure creates an atmosphere of darkness and violence.
6. What does the underlined sentence “Industrial design, in her view, makes her a jack of all trades.” in the last paragraph imply?
A. Industrial design allows her to have a wide range of skills.
B. Industrial design develops her interest in public art.
C. Industrial design makes her a master of trading with others.
D. Industrial design gives her an opportunity to take on hands-on work.
7. What can be used to describe Zarela Mosquera?
A. Responsible and cautious. B. Determined and creative.
C. Passionate and considerate. D. Ambitious and proud.

When visiting a doctor a few years from now, you can expect to be accompanied by a virtual version of yourself. This so-called digital twin will be a working model of your body that can be summoned onto a physician’s computer screen. Updated with your latest vital signs, it will help the doctor make an accurate diagnosis. It also opens the door for medicines and procedures designed specifically for you, greatly increasing recovery rates.
As our Science & technology section reports, digital twins are starting to pop up everywhere. Among other things, they monitor the health of jet engines on airliners, keep track of Uber’s network of vehicles and replicate Amazon’s extensive supply chain well enough for the online retailer to forecast sales several years ahead. They are helping local authorities respond to the effects of flooding and letting carmakers shave years off the development of new models by simulating test drives and crashes.
The idea of creating symbolic representations of real-world things is centuries old. Many ancient civilisations built architectural models, sometimes to place into tombs but also to work out bow to build things. Double-entry book-keeping, developed in the 15th century, was a paper-based representation of a merchant’s finances. The Phillips Machine, a hydraulic computer from the 1940s, created a physical “twin” of national economic flows.
Today’s digital twins extend this process making it easier for humans to tackle complex problems. They can act as virtual crystal balls, allowing people to peer into the future, spot problems before they materialise and test wild ideas without real-world consequences. Digital twins offer the ultimate sandbox in which castles can be built and tested before being made real.
Could these virtual models go out of control? They might if they are programmed badly, or hacked into. Digital twins will gather up mountains of data, some of it wrong, some of it prejudiced and much of it raising concerns about privacy and surveillance. There is also the danger of tunnel vision as humans rely more and more on digital twins — and miss things that sensors might not be able to capture. Yet these risks are not specific to digital twins. They apply to all.
8. Which of the following best describes a digital twin?
A. A toy model. B. A video game.
C. A virtual copy. D. A database.
9. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. Digital twins are a new concept in technology.
B. Symbolic representations have evolved over time.
C. The Phillips Machine is the earliest known model.
D. Symbolic representations of real-world vary in form.
10. How is a digital twin similar to a sandbox?
A. They allow testing without real-world consequences.
B. They are mainly used for entertainment purposes.
C. They predict the future without relying on data.
D. They help identify problems only after they occur.
11. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Digital twins are too risky to put into-market.
B. The risks are common across many technologies.
C. Digital twins can be applied if perfectly programmed.
D. Digital twins pose fewer threats than other technologies.

In 2022, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)announced it would let some hearing aids be sold over-the-counter for the first time, a move that will make the devices much more widely available and, in all likelihood, significantly cheaper.
It’s a move that has been increasingly important, as hearing loss is expected to rise sharply in the coming ten years. The World Health Organization warns that by 2030, nearly 630 million people worldwide will suffer from hearing loss. By 2050, that could jump to 900 million.
The act comes with some limitations. Devices for severe (重度的) hearing loss and those intended for use on children under the age of 18 will still require a prescription (处方). But for the millions who suffer from mild to moderate (轻度到中度的) hearing loss, picking up a hearing aid could be about as easy as picking up a pair of reading glasses at the drugstore.
They won’t be quite that cheap, of course, but they will likely cost less than today’s hearing aids. The FDA estimated the price of those devices could be cut in half once the rule takes effect.
“I seriously believe that we will see a significant reduction in prices for consumers with mild to moderate hearing loss,” said Blake Cadwell, founder and CEO of Soundly, a site that allows people to compare and buy hearing aids online. “Expect simple products like the Bose B1 hearing aid to go on sale for $899 and more expensive devices to sell for $1,500. In the long term, we may see even lower prices.”
“Hearing loss is an important public health issue that affects the ability of millions of Americans to effectively communicate in their daily life,” said FDA Commissioner Robert M. Califf, MD. “Establishing this new rule will allow people with mild to moderate hearing loss to have convenient access to safe, effective, and affordable hearing aids from their neighborhood store or online.”
12. How does the author support his idea in paragraph 2?
A. By providing data.
B. By giving examples.
C. By stating arguments.
D. By making comparisons.
13. What can be inferred about the new rule?
A. It limits online sales of hearing aids.
B. It requires no prescription for all types of devices.
C. It primarily aims to discourage people from using hearing aids.
D. It directly benefits people over 18 with mild to moderate hearing loss.
14. What is Blake Cadwell’s attitude toward the future price reduction of hearing aids?
A. Reserved. B. Confident. C. Uncertain. D. Concerned.
15. Which can be the most suitable title for the text?
A. Consumer Enthusiasm: The Rising Demand for Hearing Aids.
B. Over- the- Counter Hearing Aids: Critics’ Warning of the Risks
C. Accessibility Concerns: The True Cost of FDA’s Hearing Aid Changes
D. Affordable Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids: FDA’s Game- Changing Move
Tidying your desk, watering your plants or folding laundry — these household chores are hardly the height of hedonism ____16____. Psychologists suggest there are many potential mechanisms that might explain the perfect pleasure of puttering They may well encourage you to engage in it more often.
Pleasant distractions
On the surface level, puttering may be useful because it occupies the mind, so that we give fewer resources to the things that are worrying us. For instance, we may find household tasks can help us focus on the present moment. People completing these small tasks often report a significantly better mood. ____17____, as if the immersion (沉浸) in the simple activity had refreshed their minds.
____18____
Unlike other distracting activities — such as playing computer games or watching trashy TV — puttering also has the advantage of being positive and useful, increasing our “perceived control”. When we feel anxious, a sense of helplessness can heighten the physiological stress response, increasing levels of hormones. Ideally, we would deal directly with the upsetting situation itself. But research suggests we can gain a perception of control from activities that may have little effect on the situation that’s bothering us.
Tidy room, focused mind
____19____. If your puttering takes the form of organizing and decluttering (清理), you may find that the tidier environment is itself a form of comfort. To summarize, if we see order outside, it helps us to feel a bit less chaotic inside.____20____.
A. Being powerful
B. A feeling of control
C. The benefits do not end there
D. We will feel great anxiety in our mind
E. This included reduced nervousness and even a sense of “inspiration”
F. It is comforting because it makes life easier to manage and more predictable
G. Yet we often find ourselves seeking pleasure and comfort in small repetitive tasks

From my memory, my father was a man of few words and we were never close to each other. Before he joined the army, he built a house with his own hands. When he was tragically killed in one battle, the house became mine. As the house aged, it became a relic of the past, and we moved away, carrying with me the echoes of his silent presence.
One day, someone called, saying that he wanted to buy that house. I said yes.
Before we reached a deal, I thought it a must to check out the old shack (小屋) first, just in case something of value had been left behind. My two young sons followed along, and we waded through the tall grass in the mead ow where the old house sat. Time had taken its toll. The front porch had collapsed in on itself, most of the windows were gone, and the siding was falling off. We entered through an open window.
I felt as though I had chanced upon a time capsule (胶囊). Here lay the things of my dad’s lives. A broken chair. Some old clothes. But the thing that drew my eye was acardboard box stuffed with papers. I dug through its contents and was instantly transported back in time. There was a tax return from 1975. Greeting cards from old relatives and friends.
I spent most of a pleasant hour going through that box. All the while, I had to answer a stream of questions from my sons about the old house. They were amazed that nine people once occupied the tiny structure. And they shivered when I told them that in those days the cook stove was the only source of heat.
There’s nothing of value had been left, I confirmed. So we came back. The house once again enjoyed the lonely solitude of our meadow.
Then the paying day came. For no reason, maybe some reason, I came to that old house to say goodbye to something.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
As I stood in the house, my eye was drawn to a big yellowed envelope with two words “FROMARMY” on it.

B 5. C 6. A 7. B
文中第一段提到“The academic journey was far from easy, filled with demanding tasks such as metalworking, woodworking, and model making.(学术之旅并不容易,充满了苛刻的任务,如金属加工,木工和模型制作)”可知,学业之旅包括金属加工、木工和模型制作等艰巨的任务。woodworking(木工)即carpentry work(木工活),故选B。
根据文中第二段提到“The purpose of showing these two different human emotions and human reactions is to allow people to reflect upon a variety of different expressions, so that brings up the conversation as to what is the right way to talk to each other in a public space.(展示这两种不同的人类情感和人类反应的目的是让人们反思各种不同的表达方式,从而引发人们在公共空间中相互交谈的正确方式)”可以推断出“The Walkway”是为了让人们思考公共交流(C选项正确),A选项“声音来自路人”错误,且文中第二段提到“Voices and city sounds are played through speakers installed in the walkway.(人声和城市的声音通过安装在人行道上的扬声器播放)”,声音来自安装的扬声器。
故选A。
从第一段中“But she soldiered on and soon began working on more captivating projects.(但她坚持了下来,很快就开始从事更吸引人的项目)”Zarela Mosquera在面对工业设计课程的困难时坚持下来以及第二段中“she harbors a long-standing and profound interest in public art. This year, she played a crucial role in creating and designing “The Walkway” for the D.C. government.(她对公共艺术有着长期而深刻的兴趣。今年,她在为华盛顿特区政府创作和设计“人行道”的过程中发挥了至关重要的作用)”提到她积极参与公共艺术创作,可看出她的坚定和创造力。A选项“负责谨慎”、C选项“热情体贴”、D选项“有抱负骄傲”在文中均未体现。故选B。
C
Today’s digital twins extend this process, making it easier for humans to tackle complex problems.
C 9. B 10. A 11. B
根据文章第一段“This so-called digital twin will be a working model of your body that can be summoned onto a physician’s computer screen.(这个所谓的数字孪生体将是你身体的一个工作模型,可以被调用到医生的电脑屏幕上。)”
根据文章第三段“The idea of creating symbolic representations of real-world things is centuries old. Many ancient civilisations built architectural models, sometimes to place into tombs but also to work out bow to build things. Double-entry book-keeping, developed in the 15th century, was a paper-based representation of a merchant’s finances. The Phillips Machine, a hydraulic computer from the 1940s, created a physical “twin” of national economic flows.(用符号来表示现实世界中的事物这一想法已有数百年历史。
根据文章第四段“They can act as virtual crystal balls, allowing people to peer into the future, spot problems before they materialise and test wild ideas without real-world consequences. Digital twins offer the ultimate sandbox in which castles can be built and tested before being made real.(它们可以充当虚拟的水晶球,让人们窥视未来,在问题出现之前就发现它们,并测试那些不会产生现实后果的大胆想法。数字孪生体提供了一个终极的“沙盒”,人们可以在其中建造和测试城堡,然后再将其变为现实。)”可知,数字孪生与沙盒的相似之处在于它们都允许人们在不产生现实后果的情况下进行测试。故选A。
根据文章最后一段“There is also the danger of tunnel vision as humans rely more and more on digital twins—and miss things that sensors might not be able to capture. Yet these risks are not specific to digital twins. They apply to all.(此外,随着人类越来越依赖数字孪生体,还存在视野狭隘的危险——可能会错过传感器无法捕捉到的东西。然而,这些风险并非数字孪生体所特有,而是普遍存在的。)”以及整段内容可知,最后一段提到数字孪生体可能带来的风险,如数据错误、隐私泄露和视野狭隘等,但同时也指出这些风险并不是数字孪生体独有的,而是许多技术都可能面临的问题。因此,我们可以推断出这些风险在许多技术中都普遍存在。故选B。
D
A 13. D 14. B 15. D

根据第二段中的“It’s a move that has been increasingly important, as hearing loss is expected to rise sharply in the coming ten years.(这一举措变得越来越重要,因为听力损失预计将在未来十年急剧上升。)”以及下文中的“The World Health Organization warns that by 2030, nearly 630 million people worldwide will suffer from hearing loss. By 2050, that could jump to 900 million.( 世界卫生组织警告说,到2030年,全球将有近6.3亿人患有听力损失。到2050年,这一数字可能跃升至9亿。)”可知,由于听力损失预计在未来十年将急剧上升,进而在下文中列举了相关的数据,由此可知,本段是通过列举数据来支持他的观点的。故选A项。
根据第三段中的“Devices for severe (重度的) hearing loss and those intended for use on children under the age of 18 will still require a prescription (处方). But for the millions who suffer from mild to moderate (轻度到中度的) hearing loss, picking up a hearing aid could be about as easy as picking up a pair of reading glasses at the drugstore.(用于严重听力损失的设备和用于18岁以下儿童的设备仍然需要处方。但对于数百万患有轻度至中度听力损失的人来说,挑选助听器可能就像在药店买一副老花镜一样容易。)”可知,听力严重受损的以及18岁以下儿童使用该设备仍需处方,而轻度以及中度听力受损的人买助听器将会变得很容易,由此可知,这一新规直接使18岁以上轻度到中度听力损失的人受益。故选D项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中的““I seriously believe that we will see a significant reduction in prices for consumers with mild to moderate hearing loss,” said Blake Cadwell, founder and CEO of Soundly, a site that allows people to compare and buy hearing aids online.(Soundly网站的创始人兼首席执行官Blake Cadwell说:“我真的相信,对于轻度到中度听力损失的消费者来说,我们将看到价格大幅下降。” Soundly网站允许人们在线比较和购买助听器。)”可知,Blake Cadwell相信对于轻度到中度听力损失的消费者来说,将看到价格大幅下降,由此可知,Blake Cadwell对未来助听器降价的态度是有信心的。故选B项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据首段“In 2022, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)announced it would let some hearing aids be sold over-the-counter for the first time, a move that will make the devices much more widely available and, in all likelihood, significantly cheaper.( 2022年,美国食品和药物管理局(FDA)宣布,将首次允许一些助听器在非处方销售,此举将使助听器更广泛地获得,而且很可能大大便宜。)”
G 17. E 18. B 19. C 20. F
上文“Tidying your desk, watering your plants or folding laundry — these household chores are hardly the height of hedonism (享乐主义).(整理办公桌、浇花或叠衣服——这些家务活并不是享乐主义的最高境界)”说明家务活并不是典型的享乐行为。 G项中的yet为转折连词,“seeking pleasure and comfort in small repetitive tasks”和下文“might explain the perfect pleasure of puttering (慢条斯理地做)”相呼应,说明尽管家务活并不是享乐主义的最高境界,但是人们还是会在这些琐碎的任务中找到乐趣。
上文“People completing these small tasks often report a significantly better mood.(完成这些小任务的人通常会报告心情明显好转)”以及下文“as if the immersion (沉浸) in the simple activity had refreshed their minds.(仿佛沉浸在简单的活动中让他们精神焕发)”说明完成家务小任务会让人心情明显好转。 E项中的“reduced nervousness and even a sense of “inspiration””和上文中的“a significantly better mood”相呼应,也和下文的“refreshed their minds”相呼应,所以E项“这包括减少了紧张感,甚至有一种“灵感”的感觉”符合语境。故选E。
下文“Unlike other distracting activities — such as playing computer games or watching trashy TV— puttering also has the advantage of being positive and useful, increasing our “perceived control”.(不像其他分散注意力活动——比如玩电脑游戏或看低质量的电视节目——慢条斯理地做事情也有其积极和有用的一面,能增加我们的“感知控制力”)”以及“But research suggests we can gain a perception of control from activities that may have little effect on the situation that’s bothering us.(但研究表明,我们可以从对困扰我们的情况影响不大的活动中获得控制感)”说明与其他分散注意力的活动相比,慢条斯理地做事还具有积极和有用的优势,可以增加我们的“感知控制”。
标题“Tidy room, focused mind(整洁的房间,专注的思维)”以及下文“If your puttering takes the form of organizing and decluttering (清理), you may find that the tidier environment is itself a form of comfort.(如果你的慢条斯理表现为整理和去杂乱,你可能会发现,整洁的环境本身就是一种安慰)”说明整洁的环境能让人专注,而且如果你的慢条斯理表现为整理和去杂乱,整洁的环境本身就是一种安慰。
上文“To summarize, if we see order outside, it helps us to feel a bit less chaotic inside.(总结来说,如果我们看到外界是有序的,这会帮助我们感觉到内心不那么混乱)”说明整洁的外部环境能带来内心的平静。

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
As I stood in the house, my eye was drawn to a big yellowed envelope with two words “FROMARMY” on it.

I pulled out my telephone and made a call to that buyer.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Possible version:
As I stood in the house, my eye was drawn to a big yellowed envelope with two words “FROMARMY” on it. Driven by a heartstring tremor, I opened it to find a letter from my father during his military days. His familiar handwriting depicted him as talkative and homesick, which contrasted with my memory of him. Realizing he missed me as much, I silently resolved to keep it, as the house gained new significance.
I pulled out my telephone and made a call to that buyer. With guilt, I expressed my sorry for not willing to sell the house anymore and made explanations. Fortunately, he kindly understood, mentioning the house’s charm and hope for reliving the past. Gratefully, I hung up and placed back the yellow letter that changed everything. Sunlight revealed the house’s history and memories; my father’s presence warmed my heart, prompting me to bring my sons here to share family stories and assure them their grandpa lives on.
