The day when Grandma came to live with us was an exciting one for the whole family. Dad went to pick her up at the airport, and when they pulled into the driveway, we were out to greet her. Her excitement, however, was not on the same level as ours.
"What is wrong with Grandma? She does not seem very happy to be here." I asked Mom. "Well, maybe it will take time for her to get used to this change," she said, "We need to be patient with her.” Dad broke in, "Her being here is better than her living all alone in that big old house."
Time went on, and almost every day Grandma was mad or upset about something we did. Everyone noticed how Grandma had changed. Our memories of her were happy ones. She used to be a nice person and made us feel welcome when we stayed with her. Now things were a lot different.
Later, Dad took Grandma to the doctor for a checkup. It turned out that she was in the early stage of Alzheimer's disease. The doctor said she would become more forgetful and annoyed, which did not sound good to us at all.
One day when I walked in her room to see if she needed anything, Grandma had a smile on her face and she called me by name softly. How unbelievable! Grandma was back. I stayed and talked with her for a long time. We talked about when I was little and when she lived in her big old house. When Mom and Dad returned home, I told them what had happened. Mom said that she would sometimes seem OK but other times she would be forgetful and even worse. That time I spent with Grandma was one I would always remember. I knew that somewhere deep inside was the old Grandma that I remembered and loved.
21. What can we learn about the author's family?
A. They were as excited as Grandma.
B. They expected Grandma's moving in.
C. They went to pick up Grandma together.
D. They preferred Grandma to live in the old house.
22. What was Grandma like in the past?
A. Upset. B. Forgetful. C. Easygoing. D. Generous.
23. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Grandma gradually regained her memory.
B. Grandma's recovery shocked Mom and Dad.
C. The author was told to take care of Grandma.
D. The author cherished the happy time with Grandma.

Have you ever asked yourself why children go to school? You probably say that they go to learn their own language and English, mathematics, geography (地理), history, science and all the other subjects.
We send our children to school to prepare them for the time when they grow up and have to work for themselves. They learn their own language so that they know and understand what others tell them. They learn English in order to be able to benefit from what people in western countries have written and said, and in order to make people from other countries understand what they themselves mean. They learn mathematics in order to be able to measure and count things in their daily life, geography in order to know something about the world around them, and history to know something about the human beings they meet every day. Nearly everything they study at school has some practical use in their life, but is that the only reason why they go to school?
No. There is more in education than just learning facts. We go to school above all to learn how to learn so that we can continue to learn when we have left school. A man who really knows how to learn will always be successful, because whenever he has to do it he does it in the best way. The uneducated person, on the other hand, either is unable to do something new or does it badly. The purpose of school, therefore, is not just to teach languages, mathematics, geography, etc., but to teach students the way to learn.
24. In order to make other people from foreign countries understand you, you should learn ________.
A. modern science B. foreign languages
C. geography D. history
25. Nearly all the subjects they learn at school have ________.
A. no use in their future life B. little use in their future life
C. nothing to do with their daily life D. some practical use in their life
26. A person will surely be successful if he really knows ________.
A. how to learn B. some foreign languages
C. something new D. several subjects
27. On the whole, children go to school ________.
A. to learn science and languages B. to learn how to be good students
C. to get ready for their future D. to make new friends
C
Finally came Wednesday! I walked onto campus feeling nervous though I had walked to these same grounds for two years because my junior high school is next door. Everything looked and felt different now that I was in senior high.
I looked at my schedule. The first period — German. Our German teacher was very friendly and I liked her from the beginning. What I didn’t like, though, was that I was surrounded by students from other grades, with only five familiar faces.
Then I had to walk all the way across campus and up three flights of stairs to get to my second period biology. Our biology teacher is Ms Campeau, and I think that she will teach us a lot this year because she is very to the point. She also has her unique way of saying “be quiet”; she says “alligator”.
My third class was English. After surviving two periods without too much of a challenge I began to feel good. However, the third period changed everything. Mr Valassidis, my English teacher, told us that would have to write 40 essays (文章) and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this year. I love reading and writing, but 40 ESSAYS? AP-level books? Too many and too hard. Now I was scared. He also talked about how important it was to be focused. Last year was not a very “focused” year for me. While doing homework, I was often talking on the phone, or busy with a conversation online. I planned on being more attentive this year because I wanted stay an honours student.
28. What did the author mainly write about in this passage?
A. Her new teachers. B. Her plan for the new year.
C. Her first day of senior high. D. Her schedule for Wednesday.
29. What should students do when Ms Campeau says “alligator”?
A. Stand up. B. Stop talking.
C. Look at the blackboard. D. Listen carefully
30. How did the author find her first two classes?
A. Unattractive. B. Informative. C. Very tiring. D. Pretty easy.
31. Why did the author feel scared during the third period?
A. She couldn’t focus on her work. B. She found it challenging.
C. She didn’t like the teacher. D. She did poorly at school.
D
Nelson Mandela once said, “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.” I’ve always enjoyed learning new language. So far I’ve learned 11 languages.
German is the first language I started learning completely on my own. I don’t remember clearly why I chose this language to learn, but I remember I had no idea how to learn it. I spent several months reading an old grammar book found in my grandmother’s bookcase. But I quickly lost heart.
Then I saw an advertisement on TV about a language series in 4 languages and decided to give it a go. While using it, I came up with my method: a special technique to absorb (掌握) the basic patterns of any language in a light, natural and fun way. I quickly realized that it was helpful to me.
After using the technique for a year and a half, I met a group of Germans while on vacation. I would always remember their faces as they asked in surprise, “Wie kannst du so gut Deutsch?” This reaction and the resulting special connection were enough to increase my passion (激情) to improve my German. From that moment on, I started reading a lot. The language has become an important part of my life.
The lesson learned: If you find a method that you like and works, you can start learning any language by yourself. There is no best method of learning a language. Find something that is helpful to you. And above all, experiment!
32. What does the author want to show by Nelson Mandela’s words?
A. The skills of mastering new languages.
B The means of understanding foreigners.
C. The advantage of speaking mother tongues.
D The importance of learning foreign languages.
33 What did the author most probably think of the old grammar book?
A Boring. B. Surprising. C. Simple. D. Helpful.
34. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The advertisement on TV.
B. The basic language pattern.
C. The language series in 4 languages.
D. The author’s special learning method.
35. What did the Germans’ words mean in paragraph 4?
A. Could you be a guide for us?
B. Where did you learn German?
C. How can you speak German so well?
D. Can you share your way of learning German?

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I woke up early on my birthday, excited to go to school and see my friends. Although my parents were not wealthy, they always tried to turn special occasions into beautiful memories with each other.
I was about to leave for school when my mother stopped me. “Wait a minute! We have something special for you!” my mother announced and offered me a shoebox. My eyebrows raised in surprise. This gift was surprising because the box looked like one of my favourite brands. When I lifted the lid, I screamed in delight.
“Happy birthday, baby!” my mom said as I grabbed the popular basketball shoes and tried them on.“I got them from Mr. Byrne’s thrift shop (旧货店), but they look pretty new, right?” “I don’t care where they came from, Mom. They are amazing! Thank you so much!”I held them fondly. “I can’t wait to show them off at school!”
Of course, I received lots of praise at school. Suddenly, Brandon, one of my classmates, shouted, “Look! There’s something written here!” I looked carefully and saw the words “To my dearest boy…” on a sole (鞋底).
“Your mom probably wrote them,” Brandon stated.
I shook my head. “My mom’s handwriting is not like this. It must be from the old owner.”
I wondered about the words the rest of the day. Someone had really loved my sneakers, and maybe these shoes held much meaning to someone else.
After school, I walked to Mr. Byrne’s store and asked around. The older man said, “Oh, they were brought in by a kid named Samuel. He lives in a red house nearby. Mrs. Gherkins’ son, I believe.”
“Do you know why he sold them?”
“Most people bring stuff here because they need money,” Mr. Byrne stated.
I walked out of the store, thinking about how sad the boy probably was. I wanted to know what happened, so I looked around that street and soon spotted the red house.

A how to learn B. some foreign languages
C. something new D. several subjects

B. The means of understanding foreigners.
C. The advantage of speaking mother tongues.
D. The importance of learning foreign languages.
33. What did the author most probably think of the old grammar book?
A. Boring. B. Surprising. C. Simple. D. Helpful.
34 What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?
【答案】32. D 33. A 34. D 35. C

【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“I spent several months reading an old grammar book found in my grandmother’s bookcase. But I quickly lost heart.(我花了几个月的时间阅读一本旧语法书,但我很快就丧失了信心。)”及再根据第三段中的“a special technique to absorb (掌握) the basic patterns of any language in a light, natural and fun way. I quickly realized that it was helpful to me. (以轻松、自然和有趣的方式掌握任何语言基本模式的特殊方法。我很快意识到这对我很有帮助。)”可知,之后作者用一种轻松、自然又有趣的方法学习语言,这方法对自己有用。由此可推知作者觉得这本旧的语法书很无聊。故选A。
【34题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“Then I saw an advertisement on TV about a language series in 4 languages and decided to give it a go. While using it, I came up with my method(然后我在电视上看到一则关于一部四种语言的语言系列剧的广告,决定试一试。在使用它时,我想出了我的方法)”可知,作者决定试一试电视广告中的出版物。在使用的过程中,作者想出了自己的方法。再根据“I quickly realized that it was helpful to me.(我很快意识到这对我很有帮助。)”可知,作者发现自己想出的方法很有帮助。“it”指的是my method,即作者的特殊学习方法。故选D。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中的“I would always remember their faces as they asked in surprise, “Wie kannst du so gut Deutsch?” This reaction and the resulting special connection were enough to increase my passion (激情) to improve my German.(我永远记得他们惊讶地问道:“Wie kannst du so gut Deutsch?”这种反应和由此产生的特殊联系足以增加我提高德语的热情。)”可知,这些德国人的反应以及由此产生的特殊联系足以增加作者提高德语水平的激情。由此可推知,这些德国人惊讶于作者的德语说得那么好,因此他们可能会问作者为什么德语说得那么好,这是对作者的德语水平的夸奖。故选C。

【答案】Dear Mike
I’m glad to receive your letter asking how to organize the daily study. Here are my suggestions.
First of all, in the morning, you are supposed to preview lessons briefly. During class, be an active listener and ask questions. After class, it is useful for you to form study groups to discuss difficult topics. For example, you can solve math problems step by step. Besides, it is a good idea to take 30 minutes to memorize important knowledge points every day. At last, you’d better summarize the day’s learning. What’s more, don’t forget to exercise regularly to keep fit and have a proper sleep schedule, which is the foundation of efficient learning.
Best wishes. I hope these tips can be helpful.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】Paragraph 1:
I walked up to the front steps and knocked on the door. Out came a kid, calling himself Samuel. After greeting, I came straight to the point, asking why the shoes went to the thrift shop. From Samuel’s hesitant words, I knew the fact that his family needed money badly because of his father’s sudden illness. Thus, Samuel had to give up the precious birthday gift. Moved by what he said, I took off the shoes and handed them to Samuel without hesitation, wishing his family all the best. Tears in eyes, Samuel thanked me again and again.
Paragraph 2:
I returned home barefoot and my parents were shocked. Before they could say anything, the whole story came pouring out. “The amazing shoes have been back to the owner, Samuel! There’s special meaning to him!” I asked my parents to forgive me for my immediate action without referring to their opinions. Instead of scolding (训斥) me, my parents went over and hugged me tightly, praising me for what I had done. Later on, I got another special pair of shoes for my birthday. Such a “small” but beautiful memory inspired me to be a better person.
