Please feel free to have some food or drinks before we get in, and you can buy some gifts from the store to your right during the tour. Then, take a look at your brochures, which show the map of the building and where all the exhibits are. There is also information about the history of this museum. Construction of the biggest and oldest room, Langston Gallery, began under Sir Charles Langston. This is where we will be spending the majority of our time. Unfortunately, he never got the chance to see the museum completed in his lifetime. Later, other people took over the project upon his death, and finished it ten years later in 1895. The museum you see today took shape in 1905, with the addition of a second floor. We will not be going there, since it contains the special collection. You must book an appointment if you wish to see any of the items contained within it. 第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。 A Here are some dictionaries to share with you for English learning. Verbal Advantage It is the most comprehensive, accessible, and effective vocabulary-building program available today. What exactly is a “verbal advantage”? In short, a “verbal advantage” is the ability to use words in a precise and powerful manner, to communicate clearly, correctly, and effectively in every situation. In this book, I intend to turn your ability with words into mastery. Dictionary of Common Errors It provides learners and teachers of English with a practical guide to common errors and their correction. Arranged alphabetically (按字母顺序) for ease of use, the entries deal with those errors that regularly appear in the written English of learners at the intermediate level of proficiency and above. Each error is accompanied by a correction and a short, simple explanation. Merriam-Webster’s Vocabulary Builder It is designed to achieve 2 goals: to add a large number of words to your permanent working vocabulary, and to teach the most useful word-building roots to help you continue expanding your vocabulary in the future. To achieve these goals, it employs an approach that takes into account how people learn and remember. Word Power Made Easy It is the complete handbook for building a superior vocabulary, which enables you to speak and write with confidence, read more effectively and efficiently, learn quickly, develop social contacts, and increase your earning power. Pay special attention to the Chapter Review! Are the words still fresh in your mind? Do you remember the meaning of each word studied in the previous sessions? In these Reviews, you are not only testing your learning but also tightening up any areas in which you discover gaps, weaknesses, or forgetfulness. 21. What does the “Dictionary of Common Errors” offer to its users? A. A collection of idiomatic expressions. B. An alphabetical list of advanced vocabulary. C. A comprehensive history of the English language. D. A handy guide to frequently made errors and their corrections. 22. According to the passage, in which dictionary can we learn English roots? A. Verbal Advantage. B. Word Power Made Easy. C. Merriam-Webster’s Vocabulary Builder. D. Dictionary of Common Errors. 23. What can we learn from this passage? A. Going over the learned words is recommended for English learning. B. Memorizing words alphabetically is the best way to build vocabulary. C. English learners at intermediate level seldom make mistakes in writing. D. All the 4 dictionaries intend to promote learners’ grammatical competence. 【答案】21. D 22. C 23. A 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇应用文。介绍了有助于英语学习者学习英语的4本词典。 【21题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“It provides learners and teachers of English with a practical guide to common errors and their correction. (它为英语学习者和教师提供了一份常见错误和纠正的实用指南。)” 可知,这本词典是常见错误及如何纠正错误的实用指南。故选D。 【22题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“It is designed to achieve 2 goals: to add a large number of words to your permanent working vocabulary, and to teach the most useful word-building roots to help you continue expanding your vocabulary in the future. (它的目的是实现两个目标:增加大量的单词到你的永久工作词汇,并教最有用的构词根,以帮助你在未来继续扩大你的词汇量。)”可知,第三本词典可以教会学生词根,从而帮助拓宽词汇量。故选C。 【23题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“Pay special attention to the Chapter Review! Are the words still fresh in your mind? Do you remember the meaning of each word studied in the previous sessions? In these Reviews, you are not only testing your learning but also tightening up any areas in which you discover gaps, weaknesses, or forgetfulness. (要特别注意章节回顾!这句话还在你的脑海里吗?你还记得前几节课学过的每个单词的意思吗?在这些复习中,你不仅是在测试你的学习,也是在加强你发现的差距、弱点或健忘的地方。)”可知,复习对于英语学习很有益处。故选A。 B High levels of lead detected in Ludwig van Beethoven’s hair which has been confirmed belonging to him suggest that the composer had lead poisoning, which may have contributed to illness he endured over the course of his life, including deafness, according to new research. In addition to hearing loss, the famed classical composer had repeated stomach issues throughout his life, experienced two attacks of severe liver disease. It is believed that Beethoven died from liver and kidney disease at age 56. But the process of understanding what caused his many health problems has been a much more complicated puzzle, one that even Beethoven himself hoped doctors could eventually solve. An international team of researchers set out nearly a decade ago to partially fulfill Beethoven’s wish by studying locks of his hair. Using DNA analysis, the team determined which ones truly belonged to the composer and which did not, and sequenced Beethoven’s genome (基因组). The findings, published in a March 2023 report, revealed that Beethoven had significant genetic risk factors for liver disease. But the results didn’t provide any insights into the underlying causes of his deafness, which began in his 20s, or his stomach issues. Beethoven’s genome was made publicly available, inviting researchers around the world to investigate remaining questions about Beethoven’s health. In addition to high concentrations of lead, the latest findings showed arsenic (砷) and mercury (汞) that remain trapped in the composer’s strings of hair nearly 200 years after his death, according to a new letter published Monday in the journal Clinical Chemistry. The surprising insights could provide new windows into Beethoven’s persistent health problems. 24. What might have caused Beethoven’s long-term health problems? A. Loss of hearing. B. High levels of lead in his body. C. Constant complaints. D. Lack of doctor’s treatment. 25. The underlined word “wish” in paragraph 3 may refer to________. A. Examining his hair. B. Curing him of the disease. C. Identifying the cause of his illness. D. Conducting DNA analysis. 26. What did the report in 2023 find out? A. The potential cause of his deafness. B. The sequence of his genetic material. C. The hair that truly belonged to Beethoven. D. Beethoven’s carrying a great genetic risk of liver disease. 27. Why does the author mention the latest findings in the last paragraph? A. To confirm the earlier result. B. To contradict the previous findings. C. To draw a conclusion about the contributing factors. D. To provide a better understanding of the cause of his illness. 【答案】24. B 25. C 26. D 27. D 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了通过研究贝多芬的头发,科学家们发现其体内高铅含量可能是导致他长期健康问题的原因之一。 【24题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段“High levels of lead detected in Ludwig van Beethoven’s hair which has been confirmed belonging to him suggest that the composer had lead poisoning, which may have contributed to illness he endured over the course of his life, including deafness, according to new research.(根据一项新的研究,在路德维希·范·贝多芬的头发中检测到了高浓度的铅,这些头发已被证实属于他,这表明这位作曲家患有铅中毒,这可能是他一生中忍受的疾病的原因之一,包括耳聋)”可知,贝多芬长期健康问题可能是由于他体内的高铅含量。故选B。 【25题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第二段中“But the process of understanding what caused his many health problems has been a much more complicated puzzle, one that even Beethoven himself hoped doctors could eventually solve.(但是,理解导致他多种健康问题的原因是一个更加复杂的谜题,甚至贝多芬本人也希望能有医生最终解开这个谜题)”及第三段中“The findings, published in a March 2023 report, revealed that Beethoven had significant genetic risk factors for liver disease. But the results didn’t provide any insights into the underlying causes of his deafness, which began in his 20s, or his stomach issues.(2023年3月发布的一份报告中的发现显示,贝多芬存在显著的肝病遗传风险因素。但是,这些结果并没有提供关于他在20多岁时开始的耳聋或胃部问题的根本原因的任何见解)”可知, 贝多芬本人希望能找出他的病因,但一直是一个复杂的问题,一个国际研究小组通过研究贝多芬的头发,部分实现了贝多芬弄清自己生病原因的愿望。故划线词wish指的是“弄清自己生病的原因”。故选C。 【26题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“The findings, published in a March 2023 report, revealed that Beethoven had significant genetic risk factors for liver disease.(2023年3月发布的一份报告中的发现显示,贝多芬存在显著的肝病遗传风险因素)”可知,2023年的报告发现了贝多芬有显著的肝病遗传风险因素。故选D。 【27题详解】 推理判断题。根据全文内容及最后一段中“In addition to high concentrations of lead, the latest findings showed arsenic (砷) and mercury (汞) that remain trapped in the composer’s strings of hair nearly 200 years after his death, according to a new letter published Monday in the journal Clinical Chemistry. The surprising insights could provide new windows into Beethoven’s persistent health problems.(除了高浓度的铅之外,最新的研究结果显示,在贝多芬去世近200年后,他的发丝中仍残留有砷和汞,这一发现来源于周一发表在《临床化学》杂志上的一封新信件。这些令人惊讶的见解可能为贝多芬长期的健康问题提供新的视角)”可知,文章第一段得出关于贝多芬病因的结论是铅中毒,第三段又提出通过他头发的 DNA 分析,检测出他患肝病的遗传风险很高,最后一段又指出最新发现他的头发里面含有砷和汞, 这表明了作者在最后一段提到最新的发现是为了更好地理解贝多芬生病的原因。故选D。 C The ocean feels boundless. If you were to start swimming from shore, it’s easy to believe — fitness and oxygen aside — you could continue forever. That’s a far different experience to overland travel, where mountains, rivers, and highways jammed with traffic prevents easy passage. It’s equally easy to believe that fish and other highly mobile sea creatures experience the ocean in such a fashion. These animals, adapted over thousands of years to navigate the ocean, must easily bypass (绕过) any barrier around which they can theoretically swim. That assumption, though, is wrong. It’s common for many oceanic species to stick to specific habitats and only seldom swim beyond them. That is especially true for many immature animals, which are small and easy to fall victim to predators. This, however, can cause unexpectedly big problems for oceanic species, especially when infrastructure (基础设施) gets in the way. Take, for example, the green sawfish living near the mouth of the Ashburton River in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. In 2017, engineers working on a local oil and gas processing plant built a new loading facility consisting of a large piling jetty (码头) and solid rock wall, which stretched 500 meters offshore. Later, scientists realized that the green sawfish were unable, or unwilling, to pass around the barrier. But that could prevent the animals from reaching valuable feeding grounds and other habitats. This discovery leads to a surprising new idea: that sea animals, much like land species, need a helping hand getting around human infrastructure. In the case of the green sawfish, engineers could have created underpasses in the jetty through which the fish could swim. As the climate continues to change, many sea species are moving farther north and they need suitable habitats to move through. Whether creating pass-throughs in artificial structures or plotting routes away from warming oceans, thoughtfully designing our infrastructure could go a long way toward protecting animals as we continue to engineer the ocean. 28. What is the misunderstanding mentioned in the first paragraph? A. Sea creatures adapt to the ocean slowly. B. The ocean presents no barriers to sea life. C. Humans are inherently skilled at sea navigation. D. Sea travel guarantees easier passage than land travel. 29. What does the underlined word “This” in paragraph 2 refer to? A. The impact of human-made structures. B. The risk of being hunted by predators. C. The behavior of mature oceanic animals. D. The tendency to stay in familiar habitats. 30. Why are the green sawfish mentioned in the passage? A. To illustrate a point. B. To present a phenomenon. C. To put forward a new argument. D. To add some background information. 31. What does the author suggest about engineering the ocean? A. Maximizing economic benefits. B. Prioritizing human infrastructures. C. Creating underpasses for surfers. D. Accommodating oceanic species’ needs. 【答案】28. B 29. D 30. A 31. D 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了人类海洋工程对海洋生物的影响及其解决方案。 【28题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第一段中“These animals, adapted over thousands of years to navigate the ocean, must easily bypass ( 绕过) any barrier around which they can theoretically swim. That assumption, though, is wrong. (这些动物已经适应了数千年的海洋航行,必须很容易地绕过理论上它们可以游泳的任何障碍。然而,这种假设是错误的)”可知,第一段提到的误解是海洋对海洋生物没有障碍。故选B项。 【29题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线词前的“It’s common for many oceanic species to stick to specific habitats and only seldom swim beyond them. That is especially true for many immature animals, which are small and easy to fall victim to predators. (对于许多海洋物种来说,固定在特定的栖息地是很常见的,很少会游到它们范围之外。对于许多未成熟的动物来说尤其如此,这些动物很小,很容易成为捕食者的牺牲品)”可知,然而,这可能会给海洋物种带来意想不到的大问题。这里的“This”指代的是上文倾向于呆在熟悉的栖息地。故选D项。 【30题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“Take, for example, the green sawfish living near the mouth of the Ashburton River in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. 故选A项。 【31题详解】 细节理解题。 根据文章最后一段“Whether creating pass-throughs in artificial structures or plotting routes away from warming oceans, thoughtfully modifying our marine infrastructure could go a long way toward protecting animals as we continue to engineer the ocean. (无论是在人工结构中建立通道,还是规划远离变暖海洋的路线,在我们继续改造海洋的同时,深思熟虑地修改我们的海洋基础设施,对保护动物大有帮助)”可知,作者建议在进行海洋工程时,应该考虑到海洋物种的需求,比如为绿锯鱼创建可以通过的通道,以帮助它们绕过人类建造的障碍物,从而保护海洋生物。故选D项。 D Are you eyebrow blind? TikTok users seem to think so — many have complained on the platform about makeup wearers’ apparent inability to spot whether they’re blindly following makeup trends or wearing what looks good on their faces. Though “eyebrow blindness” and other types of “beauty blindness” aren’t exactly considered mental health trouble. people’s tendency to follow trends — even when they look silly or take risks doing so — is definitely a real phenomenon. So, what does psychology say about trend following? First, following trends isn’t a sign of character weakness or mental health trouble. Instead, says psychologist Pamela B. Rutledge, it’s perfectly normal. The reason for trend following relates to humans' core need to belong toa social group and connect with others. Multiple psychological frameworks argue that human connections are as important as basics like access to food and shelter because humans evolved (进化) to rely on one another for survival. But why do trends themselves have such a pull? “Our brains are hardwired to notice what’s unusual,” Rutledge says. Thus, we notice outliers and attention-grabbers, making trends even more appealing for those bold enough to follow them. No one is exempt from following crazes, noticing trends, or signaling their real belonging to social groups. But one group in particular is even easier to follow trends-even risky ones: Tweens, teens, and young adults. As children start the road toward adult independence, they look for ways to express their individuality. This can produce sometimes desperate attempts to prove affiliation (隶属关系) with socially credible in-groups and can fuel desire to stand out with the help of trends. So, next time you put on makeup or get dressed, order a meal in public, or purchase a vehicle, consider that your decision may not be as personalized as you may think. “it’s really just an inborn response, one that can be explained by our need to fit in with or stand out from the crowd.” says Rutledge. 32. According to the first paragraph, a beauty blind person might________. A. oppose makeup trends publicly B. follow makeup trends uncritically C. rely on social media for makeup advice D. take risks with untested beauty products 33. What’s a primary motivation of trend following? A. Financial profit. B. Social connection. C. Artistic expression. D. Character weakness. 34. Which can best replace the underlined words “exempt from” in paragraph 4? A. Free of. B. Subject to. C. Exposed to. D. Concerned about. 35. What might Rutledge think of trend following? A. It’s a personalized choice. B. It mirrors people's mental health C. It results from lack of self-confidence. D. It’s a natural response to social signals 【答案】32. B 33. B 34. A 35. D 【解析】 【导语】本文是说明文。文章深入剖析了人们追随潮流趋势背后的心理动因。通过探讨人类对于社会归属感的基本需求,解释了为何人们倾向于追逐潮流,包括在化妆和时尚选择上。 【32题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段中“Are you eyebrow blind? Kwan waved, and Mrs. Gibbs walked over to him and his grandmother. “It’s very nice to see you,” Mrs. Gibbs said. Then she saw the cloths wrapped around the groceries Kwan and his grandmother were loading into their car. “Oh, how beautiful!” she exclaimed. “Thank you. These are our hometown wrapping cloths,” grandmother explained. “Kwan and I embroidered (刺绣) them together.” Kwan looked away. Although he enjoyed helping grandmother make the cloths, he didn’t want anyone at school to know about it. “Kwan, you should bring your cloths to school tomorrow. Your classmates would enjoy seeing them. You have a unique skill,” Mrs. Gibbs said. Kwan appreciated his teacher’s comments, but he was hesitant. The kids might laugh at the idea of a boy who liked to stitch (缝) patterns with a needle and thread. He thought about his grandmother’s wide smile that showed how proud of him she would be for sharing this custom. “O.K. I’ll bring some to class tomorrow,” Kwan replied quietly. Grandma sensed that something was wrong. “Kwan, are you worried about tomorrow?” she asked. Kwan stared at the floor. “What are the other kids going to think?” he said. “This isn’t the kind of thing they do for fun. Creating embroidered patterns isn’t like playing an instrument or a sport.” “You’re right,” Grandma said. “It is different. But that is why it is so special.” Then she brought out a fine cloth with different designs. “When your grandfather and I were married, we received a gift from his mother wrapped in this cloth she made. In our culture, gifts given in wrapping cloths are extra special because they are a symbol of love and good luck.” she explained. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为 150 左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 The next morning Kwan took several wrapping cloths to school. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ As Kwan listened to his classmates, he noticed that his forehead no longer felt hot. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: Paragraph 1: The next morning, Kwan took several wrapping cloths to school. During art class, his heart raced, knowing Mrs. Gibbs would eventually call on him. Just as he hoped time might run out, he heard his name. Kwan walked to the front, his face flushed. Taking a deep breath, he carefully unfolded the cloths, and the vibrant patterns immediately caught everyone’s attention. Encouraged by their interest, Kwan began to explain the cultural meaning behind the patterns. For a moment, there was silence, but instead of teasing, curious hands shot into the air. “This must have taken forever to make!” one student exclaimed. Another added, “You`ve got serious talent, Kwan.” Paragraph 2: As Kwan listened to his classmates, he noticed his forehead no longer felt hot. His initial unease had vanished as their sincere compliments reached him. They even asked him to teach them embroidery. The class soon turned into a workshop with Kwan guiding them how to stitch. Some wanted to use the special cloth to carry their lunch, but soon realized they needed practice if they didn’t want their sandwiches ending up on the sidewalk. “Folding these cloths is another talent,” Mrs. Gibbs laughed as her own cloth came undone. Embracing the moment, Kwan realized that sharing his craft wasn`t something to be embarrassed about — it was a way to connect with others and to share a meaningful part of his culture. 词汇激活 行为类 ①希望:hope/wish ②取笑:tease/make fun of ③使用:use/make use of/employ 情绪类 ①好奇的:curious/inquisitive ②真诚的:sincere/ genuine 【点睛】【高分句型1】His initial unease had vanished as their sincere compliments reached him. A. Going over the learned words is recommended for English learning. B. Memorizing words alphabetically is the best way to build vocabulary. C. English learners at intermediate level seldom make mistakes in writing. D. All the 4 dictionaries intend to promote learners’ grammatical competence. B High levels of lead detected in Ludwig van Beethoven’s hair which has been confirmed belonging to him suggest that the composer had lead poisoning, which may have contributed to illness he endured over the course of his life, including deafness, according to new research. C The ocean feels boundless. As the climate continues to change many sea species are moving farther north and they need suitable habitats to move through. D Are you eyebrow blind? D. It’s a natural response to social signals 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 I count myself among the polyglots who know several languages! ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$null
