We were seven hours past sun-up, but you never would have known that on Thursday
afternoon as the roosters-adult male chickens- began to crow. The noise started just after 2 p. m. and
by the time it stopped, the dozen or so roosters would stretch open their mouths, extend their necks
and cry out more than 100 times collectively in this event, which is one of the oldest contests at the
Kentucky State Fair. Kentuckians, young and old, bring their roosters to the fair to see who can
crow the most in a 15-minute stretch. The winning rooster’s owner takes home a bag of chicken
feed.
It was about half an hour until the crow-off began when I settled into a seat across from a
small stage full of cages. That’s where I met John Ball, the fair’s crowing organizer, who talked
excitedly about the whole affair to come. “The only real rules are you have to bring a rooster and
that you can’t egg it on during its 15 minutes in the spotlight,” he said.
I wondered how a rooster was trained to crow in the afternoon, and fortunately, nine-year-old
Ben Miller had some insight to share. When I introduced myself to him, he was already covering his
rooster’s eyes gently with his hand. “Now, it thinks it’s dark,” Ben told me. Part of the trick was to
make his rooster believe the sun hadn’t risen yet. That way, it would be ready to cry out as soon as it
saw the light.
As I looked around, I saw that a few other roosters had joined us. One by one they were
placed in the cages in front of the audience. The crowing continued for the full 15 minutes. After
Ball’s timer went off, Sam Lamb, 15, and his rooster won the contest. It’d crowed 37 times, just a
little more than half of the 67 crows from a few years before.
24.What can we say about the contest?
A.It centers around six roosters. B.It lasts for a total of half an hour.
C.It is organized on a weekend afternoon. D.It is a tradition at the Kentucky State Fair.
25.What did John mean by saying “you can’t egg it on” in paragraph 2?
A.You can’t leave it on an egg. B.You can’t motivate it to crow.
C.You can’t stop it from crowing. D.You can’t interrupt it with an egg.
26.What was Ben’s trick with his rooster?
A.He made it confused about the time. B.He showed it some chicken feed.
C.He trained it to react to the timer. D.He left it alone in a dark room.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The science behind rooster crowing
B.The history of the Kentucky State Fair
C.An occasion where roosters take center stage
D.A day when John Ball shows up in a contest.
C
Animals can express their needs using a lot of ways. For instance, almost all animals have
distinct vocals (声音) that they rely on to either ask for help, scare away any dangerous animals or
look for shelter. But cats are special creatures who possess amazing vocalization skills. They are
able to have entire conversations with humans using meows and you're able to interpret it. If a pet
cat is hungry, it will keep meowing to attract attention and find food. However, when a cat is
looking for affection, they tend to produce stretched and soft meows. Meowing starts as soon as a
baby cat is brought to life and uses it to get the mother's attention and be fed.
Cats have many heightened senses, but their sense of smell is quite impressive. They use their
noses to assess their environment and look out for any signs of danger. They will sniff out specific
areas before they choose a place to relax. However, another way the cats are able to distinguish
between situations is by looking for familiar smells. Your cat will likely smell your face and store
the smell in its memory and use it to recognize you in the future. That's why most pet cats are able
to tell immediately if their owners were around any other cats, which they don't usually like.
Dogs are known for their impressive fetching habit, but cats take this behavior up a notch.
Many cats will find random objects outside and bring them to their owners. This is a very old habit
that's been present in all kinds of predators (食肉动物). Cats bring gifts for their owners to show
they love you. These adorable little hunters are just doing something that it's been in their nature
since the beginning of time. So just go along with it!
28.What can be learned about cats' meowing from the first paragraph?
A.It's a survival skill. B.It's taught by mother cats.
C.It's hard to interpret. D.It's getting louder with age.
29.How does a pet cat assess different situations?
A.By listening for sounds. B.By touching familiar objects.
C.By checking on smells. D.By communicating with other cats.

The Saint Lukas train doesn’t accept passengers — it accepts only the sick. The Saint Lukas is
one of five government-sponsored medical trains that travel to remote towns in central and eastern
Russia. Each stop lasts an average of two days, and during that time the doctors and nurses on board
provide rural populations with basic medical care, X-ray scans and prescriptions.
“People started queuing to make an appointment early in the morning,” says Emile Ducke, a
German photographer who traveled with the staff of the Saint Lukas for a two-week trip in
November through the vast regions of Krasnoyarsk and Khakassia.
Russia’s public health care service has been in serious need of modernization. The government
has struggled to come up with measures to address the problem, particularly in the poorer, rural
areas east of the Volga River, including arranging doctor’s appointments by video chat and
expanding financial aid programs to motivate doctors to practice medicine in remote parts of the
country like Krasnoyarsk.
The annual arrival of the Saint Lukas is another attempt to improve the situation. For 10
months every year, the train stops at about eight stations over two weeks, before returning to the
regional capital to refuel and restock (补给 ). Then it starts all over again the next month. Most
stations wait about a year between visits.
Doctors see up to 150 patients every day. The train’s equipment allows for basic checkups. “I
was very impressed by the doctors and their assistants working and living in such little space but
still staying focused and very concerned,” says Ducke. “They were the best chance for many rural
people to get the treatment they want. ”
32.How is the Saint Lukas different from other trains?
A.It runs across countries. B.It reserves seats for the seniors.
C.It functions as a hospital. D.It travels along a river.
33.What can we infer from paragraph 3 about Krasnoyarsk?
A.It is heavily populated. B.It offers training for doctors.
C.It is a modern city. D.It needs medical aid.
34.How long can the Saint Lukas work with one supply?
A.About a year. B.About ten months.
C.About two months. D.About two weeks.
35.What is Ducke’s attitude toward the Saint Lukas’ services?
A.Appreciative. B.Doubtful C.Ambiguous. D.Cautious.

AFew Tips for Self-Acceptance
We all want it… to accept and love ourselves. But at times it seems too difficult and too far
out of reach. 36 Here’s a handful of ways that will set you in the right direction.
● 37 Do not follow the people who make you feel not-good-enough. Why do you
follow them? Are you hoping that eventually you will feel empowered because your life is better
than theirs? Know that your life is your own; you are the only you in this world.
●Forgive yourself for mistakes that you have made. We are often ashamed of our
shortcomings, our mistakes and our failures. 38 You will make mistakes, time and time
again. Rather than getting caught up in how you could have done better, why not offer yourself a
compassionate (有同情心) response? “That didn’t go as planned. But, I tried my best.”
●Recognize all of your strengths. Write them down in a journal. Begin to train your brain to
look at strength before weakness. List all of your accomplishments and achievements. You have a
job, earned your degree, and you got out of bed today. 39
●Now that you’ve listed your strengths, list your imperfections. Turn the page in your journal.
Put into words why you feel unworthy, why you don’t feel good enough. Now, read these words
back to yourself. 40 Turn to a page in your journal to your list of strengths and
achievements. See how awesome you are?
A.Feeling upset again?
B.Where do you start?
C.Nothing is too small to celebrate.
D.Remember, you are only human.
E.Set an intention for self-acceptance.
F.Stop comparing yourself with others.
G.When does the comparison game start?

I had always prided myself on my sharp tongue and brilliant response whether in class debates
or casual arguments. Thus, when I was selected to represent the school in the national debate series,
I was naturally extremely confident of myself.
All the members in my team were good speakers. We had an experienced teacher who trained
us well. But I was undoubtedly the most outstanding speaker. In each of the rounds that I debated in,
all the judges selected me as the best one. This meant that my confidence was the highest by the
time we found ourselves with one week to train before the finals. I had every reason to believe that I
would be voted the best speaker for the debate series.
I began to be self-important about the whole business and started behaving that way with my
team-mates. I would laugh at Eton’s poor debating style. I would complain of Vivian’s slow
response. I saw myself as the natural debater who would be disappointed by their bad performance.
As the finals drew near, I became more and more dissatisfied with my team. I began missing
practices. My teacher was worried. My teammates were panicked. However, they had no choice but
to rely on me to win the finals. Even if they would love to remove me from the team they could not
because there was no replacement good enough.
The day of the finals finally came. I was very excited that I was able to finally show off my
debating skills. Everyone was expecting my performance. They knew that I was praised to be the
one most likely to win the best speaker for the debate series.

How to Become a Scientist
When being kids, we were dreaming of being a scientist although we were regarded as childish. As a senior student with a strong will to make contributions to our society, I think we need to do the following things to become a scientist.
Firstly, studying hard is the basic method. It is clear that only when we study hard to acquire the knowledge about the science and technology can we fulfill the need of innovation. Besides, interest is the best teacher. Hardly can we imagine a child without passion of exploring will get progress in innovation, so we need to develop our interests when we are young. Last but not least, those who want to become a scientist should cultivate their creative thinking. That means we should think about the reasons why a phenomenon happens and how it works instead of just listening and following the traditions and customs.

But the reality was not something that I had ever imagined. As the debate began, I found myself struggling to form coherent arguments. My mind went blank at crucial moments, and I stuttered and fumbled for words. The opposing team, on the other hand, was well-prepared and presented their points flawlessly. I could see the disappointment on the faces of my teammates and the judges. My overconfidence had led me to neglect my preparation, and now I was paying the price. I realized too late that I had underestimated my opponents and overestimated my own abilities.
Suddenly, a comforting hand from behind held mine. It was Vivian. She gave me an encouraging smile and whispered, “We’re in this together. Let’s do our best.” Her words and gesture filled me with a newfound determination. I took a deep breath and focused on the debate. With the support of my teammates, I slowly regained my composure and started to contribute more effectively. Although we didn't win the finals, I learned a valuable lesson about humility and teamwork. From that day on, I became a better team player and a more respectful debater.

But the reality was not something that I had ever imagined. As soon as I stood up to speak, my mind went blank. I stuttered and struggled to find the right words. The opposing team, on the other hand, was eloquent and well-prepared. I could see the disappointment on the faces of my teammates and the judges. My overconfidence had backfired, and I realized too late that I had taken my team for granted. I felt a sinking feeling in my stomach as I realized I might have cost us the chance to win.
Suddenly, a comforting hand from behind held mine. It was Vivian. She gave me a reassuring smile and said, “We’re a team. Let’s do this together.” Her words and gesture gave me a newfound strength. I took a deep breath and tried to calm down. With Vivian’s support, I managed to pull myself together and start contributing to the debate. Although we didn’t win the finals, I learned a valuable lesson about humility and teamwork. From that day on, I became a better team player and a more respectful person.

Text 10
M: In the spring of 2021, 12 sailing teams from around the world competed in the first-ever Ocean Race Europe. The race set off from Lorient, France, on May 29, 2021. Teams of 6 to 10 people spent 22 days sailing the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea to the finish line, in Genoa, Italy. That’s where the race ended, on June 19, 2021. Two classes of speedy sailboats raced in the event: the IMOCA and the VO65. Offshore Team Germany won the IMOCA class race. And Portugal’s Mirpuri Foundation Racing Team won the VO65 class. The Ocean Race Europe presented plenty of challenges. Teams were on their boats for three straight weeks. When you were on board, all you do was race, eat, and sleep. There was no Internet connection and there were no movies. There wasn’t even a fridge or a freezer inside the boat. The Ocean Race Europe has a larger purpose. During the race, the boats collected scientific data from the salty waters. The data is shared with scientists. It provides insight about how the ocean is affected by climate change. Scientists use the data to further understand and advocate the world’s changing environment and seas.

We were seven hours past sun-up, but you never would have known that on Thursday afternoon as the roosters-adult male chickens- began to crow. The noise started just after 2 p. m. and by the time it stopped, the dozen or so roosters would stretch open their mouths, extend their necks and cry out more than 100 times collectively in this event, which is one of the oldest contests at the Kentucky State Fair. Kentuckians, young and old, bring their roosters to the fair to see who can crow the most in a 15-minute stretch. The winning rooster’s owner takes home a bag of chicken feed.
It was about half an hour until the crow-off began when I settled into a seat across from a small stage full of cages. That’s where I met John Ball, the fair’s crowing organizer, who talked excitedly about the whole affair to come. “The only real rules are you have to bring a rooster and that you can’t egg it on during its 15 minutes in the spotlight,” he said.
I wondered how a rooster was trained to crow in the afternoon, and fortunately, nine-year-old Ben Miller had some insight to share. When I introduced myself to him, he was already covering his rooster’s eyes gently with his hand. “Now, it thinks it’s dark,” Ben told me. Part of the trick was to make his rooster believe the sun hadn’t risen yet. That way, it would be ready to cry out as soon as it saw the light.
As I looked around, I saw that a few other roosters had joined us. One by one they were placed in the cages in front of the audience. The crowing continued for the full 15 minutes. After Ball’s timer went off, Sam Lamb, 15, and his rooster won the contest. It’d crowed 37 times, just a little more than half of the 67 crows from a few years before.

Animals can express their needs using a lot of ways. For instance, almost all animals have distinct vocals (声音) that they rely on to either ask for help, scare away any dangerous animals or look for shelter. But cats are special creatures who possess amazing vocalization skills. They are able to have entire conversations with humans using meows and you're able to interpret it. If a pet cat is hungry, it will keep meowing to attract attention and find food. However, when a cat is looking for affection, they tend to produce stretched and soft meows. Meowing starts as soon as a baby cat is brought to life and uses it to get the mother's attention and be fed.
Cats have many heightened senses, but their sense of smell is quite impressive. They use their noses to assess their environment and look out for any signs of danger. They will sniff out specific areas before they choose a place to relax. However, another way the cats are able to distinguish between situations is by looking for familiar smells. Your cat will likely smell your face and store the smell in its memory and use it to recognize you in the future. That's why most pet cats are able to tell immediately if their owners were around any other cats, which they don't usually like.
Dogs are known for their impressive fetching habit, but cats take this behavior up a notch. Many cats will find random objects outside and bring them to their owners. This is a very old habit that's been present in all kinds of predators (食肉动物). Cats bring gifts for their owners to show they love you. These adorable little hunters are just doing something that it's been in their nature since the beginning of time.
30.Which best explains the phrase "take. . . up notch" in paragraph 3?
A.Perform appropriately. B.Move faster.
C.Act strangely. D.Do better.
31.What is a suitable title for the text?
A.Tips on Finding a Smart Cat B.Understanding Your Cat's Behavior
C.Have Fun with Your Cat D.How to Keep Your Cat Healthy
D
The Saint Lukas train doesn’t accept passengers — it accepts only the sick. The Saint Lukas is one of five government-sponsored medical trains that travel to remote towns in central and eastern Russia. Each stop lasts an average of two days, and during that time the doctors and nurses on board provide rural populations with basic medical care, X-ray scans and prescriptions.
“People started queuing to make an appointment early in the morning,” says Emile Ducke, a German photographer who traveled with the staff of the Saint Lukas for a two-week trip in November through the vast regions of Krasnoyarsk and Khakassia.
Russia’s public health care service has been in serious need of modernization. The government has struggled to come up with measures to address the problem, particularly in the poorer, rural areas east of the Volga River, including arranging doctor’s appointments by video chat and expanding financial aid programs to motivate doctors to practice medicine in remote parts of the country like Krasnoyarsk.
The annual arrival of the Saint Lukas is another attempt to improve the situation. For 10 months every year, the train stops at about eight stations over two weeks, before returning to the regional capital to refuel and restock (补给). Then it starts all over again the next month. Most stations wait about a year between visits.
Doctors see up to 150 patients every day. The train’s equipment allows for basic checkups. “I was very impressed by the doctors and their assistants working and living in such little space but still staying focused and very concerned,” says Ducke. “They were the best chance for many rural people to get the treatment they want.
D.Cautious.

A Few Tips for Self-Acceptance
We all want it… to accept and love ourselves. But at times it seems too difficult and too far out of reach. 36 Here’s a handful of ways that will set you in the right direction.
● 37 Do not follow the people who make you feel not-good-enough. Why do you follow them? Are you hoping that eventually you will feel empowered because your life is better than theirs? Know that your life is your own; you are the only you in this world.
●Forgive yourself for mistakes that you have made. We are often ashamed of our shortcomings, our mistakes and our failures. 38 You will make mistakes, time and time again. Rather than getting caught up in how you could have done better, why not offer yourself a compassionate (有同情心) response? “That didn’t go as planned. But, I tried my best.”
●Recognize all of your strengths. Write them down in a journal. Begin to train your brain to look at strength before weakness. List all of your accomplishments and achievements. You have a job, earned your degree, and you got out of bed today. 39
●Now that you’ve listed your strengths, list your imperfections. Turn the page in your journal. Put into words why you feel unworthy, why you don’t feel good enough. Now, read these words back to yourself. 40 Turn to a page in your journal to your list of strengths and achievements. See how awesome you are?
A.Feeling upset again?

I had always prided myself on my sharp tongue and brilliant response whether in class debates or casual arguments. Thus, when I was selected to represent the school in the national debate series, I was naturally extremely confident of myself.
All the members in my team were good speakers. We had an experienced teacher who trained us well. But I was undoubtedly the most outstanding speaker. In each of the rounds that I debated in, all the judges selected me as the best one. This meant that my confidence was the highest by the time we found ourselves with one week to train before the finals. I had every reason to believe that I would be voted the best speaker for the debate series.
I began to be self-important about the whole business and started behaving that way with my team-mates. I would laugh at Eton’s poor debating style. I would complain of Vivian’s slow response. I saw myself as the natural debater who would be disappointed by their bad performance.
As the finals drew near, I became more and more dissatisfied with my team. I began missing practices. My teacher was worried. My teammates were panicked. However, they had no choice but to rely on me to win the finals. Even if they would love to remove me from the team they could not because there was no replacement good enough.
The day of the finals finally came. I was very excited that I was able to finally show off my debating skills. Everyone was expecting my performance. They knew that I was praised to be the one most likely to win the best speaker for the debate series.

How to Become a Scientist
When being kids, we were dreaming of being a scientist although we were regarded as childish.
As a senior student with a strong will to make contributions to our society, I think we need to do the
following things to become a scientist.
Firstly, studying hard is the basic method. It is clear that only when we study hard to acquire the
knowledge about the science and technology can we fulfill the need of innovation. Besides, interest
is the best teacher. Hardly can we imagine a child without passion of exploring will get progress in
innovation, so we need to develop our interests when we are young. Last but not least, those who
want to become a scientist should cultivate their creative thinking. That means we should think about
the reasons why a phenomenon happens and how it works instead of just listening and following the
traditions and customs.

But the reality was not something that I had ever imagined. As the debate began, I found myself
struggling to form coherent arguments. My mind went blank at crucial moments, and I stuttered and
fumbled for words. The opposing team, on the other hand, was well-prepared and presented their
points flawlessly. I could see the disappointment on the faces of my teammates and the judges. My
overconfidence had led me to neglect my preparation, and now I was paying the price. I realized too
late that I had underestimated my opponents and overestimated my own abilities.
Suddenly, a comforting hand from behind held mine. It was Vivian. She gave me an
encouraging smile and whispered, “We’re in this together. Let’s do our best.” Her words and gesture
filled me with a newfound determination. I took a deep breath and focused on the debate. With the
support of my teammates, I slowly regained my composure and started to contribute more effectively.
Although we didn't win the finals, I learned a valuable lesson about humility and teamwork. From
that day on, I became a better team player and a more respectful debater.

But the reality was not something that I had ever imagined. As soon as I stood up to speak, my
mind went blank. I stuttered and struggled to find the right words. The opposing team, on the other
hand, was eloquent and well-prepared. I could see the disappointment on the faces of my teammates
and the judges. My overconfidence had backfired, and I realized too late that I had taken my team for
granted. I felt a sinking feeling in my stomach as I realized I might have cost us the chance to win.
Suddenly, a comforting hand from behind held mine. It was Vivian. She gave me a reassuring
smile and said, “We’re a team. Let’s do this together.” Her words and gesture gave me a newfound
strength. I took a deep breath and tried to calm down. With Vivian’s support, I managed to pull
myself together and start contributing to the debate. Although we didn’t win the finals, I learned a
valuable lesson about humility and teamwork. From that day on, I became a better team player and a
more respectful person.

M: In the spring of 2021, 12 sailing teams from around the world competed in the first-ever Ocean
Race Europe. The race set off from Lorient, France, on May 29, 2021. Teams of 6 to 10 people
spent 22 days sailing the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea to the finish line, in Genoa,
Italy. That’s where the race ended, on June 19, 2021. Two classes of speedy sailboats raced in the
event: the IMOCA and the VO65. Offshore Team Germany won the IMOCA class race. And
Portugal’s Mirpuri Foundation Racing Team won the VO65 class. The Ocean Race Europe
presented plenty of challenges. Teams were on their boats for three straight weeks. When you
were on board, all you do was race, eat, and sleep. There was no Internet connection and there
were no movies. There wasn’t even a fridge or a freezer inside the boat. The Ocean Race Europe
has a larger purpose. During the race, the boats collected scientific data from the salty waters.
The data is shared with scientists. It provides insight about how the ocean is affected by climate
change. Scientists use the data to further understand and advocate the world’s changing
environment and seas.
