When Ariel Rojas rode her bike to Bay Wildlife Reserve in Queens, New York, last
November, she planned to go hiking and bird-watching. A mile into her walk, she suddenly
spotted a beautiful swan struggling near the water's edge. Ariel, 30, who had worked at the
Wild Bird Recovery Center in Manhattan, knew that swans were likely to view her as a
predator and attack her.but as she approached this one, it didn't move
She was certain that the bird needed medical attention, so she covered her jacket over the
bird's head to keep it calm, gently picked it up but then a thought struck her: What should I do
next? The nearest Wild Bird Recovery Center was across the East River and clear on the other
side of town. How was she going to carry a I7-pound swan on her bike all that way? Luckily.
some strangers driving by offered her, her bike, and the swan a lift to a nearby subway station
On the subway, no one seemed to be particularly bothered by the feathered passenger. "One
guy," said Ariel, "was sitting right in front of me on bis phone. I don't know if he even noticed
there was a swan in front of him."
Rojas called the center on the way, and Tristan Higgin, an animal-care manager, picked
her up at the subway station and drove bird, bike, and Rojas to the facility. There, staff
members determined that the swan might have heavy metal poisoning, caused by taking in
weights used on fishing lines. The staff got the swan back up on her feet. She even made
friends at the center--another injured swan. Sadly, even with all that loving care, the swan
didn't pick up. Two months after Rojas came to her aid, she passed away. It's a disappointing
ending, but the real story is just how far some people are willing to go to save a swan in the big
city. In all, Rojas traveled two hours by foot, car. and subway while dragging her bike.

After waking up, you may feel frustrated that you cannot recall the dreams you had last
night. Artificial intelligence (AI) may be able to help.
Previously, there have been Al models that can turn text into images. They can do this by
learning from a large amount of data from both tests and images. This time, researchers from
Osaka University in Japan have trained an Alsystem called Stable Diffusion to re-create images
based on people's brain scans, reported Science magazine.
The researchers used an online data set provided by the University of Minnesota, US
which consisted of brain scans from four participants as they each viewed a set of 10,000
photos The scans were recorded by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI 功能性磁共
振成像).
The AI then learned about the brain activities by analyzing changes in blood flow showr
by the fMRI data - when a part of the brain is activated, more blood will flow to it. It then
matched the brain activities with the photos. Through this method, AI learned how human
brains would react when seeing different photos
Finally, the researchcrs tested the Al on additional brain scans from the same participants
when they viewed photos of a toy bear, airplane, clock and train. If the person looked at an
airplane, for example, the Al would use the brain scan data to create an image of a very blurry
airplane. Then, it would turn on the previous "'text-to-image" model and make the image
clearer by feeding itself the keyword "airplane", The final images were "convincing" with
about 80 percent of accuracy, according to the researchers.
The new study created a novel approach that incorporates texts and images tc
"decipher(解码) the brain". Ariel Goldstein from Princeton University, US, told Science
magazine. In the future, scientists hope that the technology can be used to record imagined
thoughts and dreams or allow people to understand how differently other animals perceive
reality.
28 What do we know about Stable Diffusion?
A. It can help train people's minds
B. It can fully present people's dreams.
C. It was crcated to draw people's brains!
D. It can produce pictures from people's thoughts
29. How did the Al system learn about human brain activity?
A. By recording brain scans from participants
B. By analyzing descriptions of human thoughts
C. By studying patterns of blood flow in the brain
D. By examining 10,oo0 photos about human brains
30. What does the underlined word "'blurry" in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
B. Striking.
C. Factual.
A. Unclear.
D. Unusual.
31. What is the potential use of this technology according to scientists?
A. To help understand our dreams
B. To improve text-to-image models
C To learn how animals view the world
D. To create more accurate brain scans

With digital learning gaining popularity, some students choose to learn from home using
computers and the internet. They used websites and digital books instead of paper ones. But are
thcy learning as well as they think?
Studies show that reading on paper is easicr to understand than reading on a screen. Anne
Mangen, a literacy professor at the University of Stavanger in Norway, says reading on paper is
calm and attracts our attention, unlike the reading on a screen.
Experts say that while screens are good for quick news, complex texts are better on paper
They help us remember details better. A study by Lauren Singer Trakhman found that students
understood the main ideas whether they read on paper or a screen, but they missed small detail
on screens. Reading on screens might make us read faster but not as deeply. Our brains might
be getting used to quick information from digital media and not thinking carefully about what
we read.
Some research shows that our brains react differently to paper and screens. Reading on
paper can make us feel more and understand the space around us better.
So what can we do? We shouldn't stop using screens, but we should think about what we
-
read on them. Singer Trakhman says she uses her Kindle for fun but turns to paper for serious
reading. To remember what we read on screens, we can try writing down the main points by
hand. It might help us remember better than typing. And sometimes, turning off our device
and reading a real book can be very nice.
32. What does Anne Mangen think of reading on paper
A. lt is better for reading quick news
B. It brings peaceful reading experience
C. It provides a new adventure for readers.
D. It helps to improve communication abilities
33. Why might students miss details when reading on screens?
A. Screens make the text harder to read
B. The tcxt on screens is usually less dctailed
C. Students tend to read quickly and not think deeply
D. Screens make it difficult to understand the main ideas
84. What can be inferred from Lauren Singer Trakhman's reading habits?
A. She bardly uses screens in daily reading
B. She likes using Kindle for all types of reading
C. She thinks Kindles are suitable for serious reading
D. She prefers to use paper for challenging literature
35. Which is the best title for this passage?
A. The Advantages Digital Learning Brings B. Reading on Paper vs. Reading on Screens
C. How Reading on Paper Shapes Students D. The Importance of Online Learning at Home

Because what you say during an interview is so important, there are two rules to remember
Onc is to present yoursclf in a favourableway and stress your areas of excellence. However,
don't exaggerate(夸张): tell the truth. 37 Notice the interviewer's interests and relate
your comments to them.
38 Don't be afraid to ask for a second interview if you need time to gather
information that will be more useful in the second interview. Most interviewers will appreciate
your qucstions and your ability to listen and respond
Each of us has sensitive areas, which could refer to your lack of an academic degree, a
long period of unemplovment, or lack of work experience if you are entering a new field
39 If you believe that this area presents a real barrier to a job offer, you could be
communicating this doubt to the interviewer. Many times, however, an interviewer will ignore
these sensitive areas if you have a confident, positive attitude
The job intcrview is an important part of the job search because the attitude and
impression you project can make the interviewer feel "with you" or "against you". 40
Interviewers have the intelligence to recognize genuine enthusiasm and interest

B. Show confidence in yourself and your ability to do the job
. C. Some people lose job opportunities because of talking too much

One day, an eight-year-old boy named Tom argued with one of his good friends for a little
incident. What was worse, they failed to control themselves, so the argument turned out to be a
fight at last. Angry and sad, Tom went to his grandfather and told him the whole story with
tears. "Mike is really a bad boy. I won't want to see him again." he threw these wards. "I hate
him very much. I promise that if I treated him as my friend again, I would be a dog."
Grandfather clapped him on the head and comforted him in a gentle voice, "Honey, I can
feel your sorrow in my heart, but please allow me to tell you a story of mine. When I was a
young boy like you, I always hated others, too. But as I grow older, I have realized the fact that
hate itself can only make you tired. It doesn't hurt your enemy but only hurt yourself."
As the boy listened carefully, the grandfather went on, "Dear Tom, can you guess there are
