Mr. Worth liked spending time with his grandson, Shawn. Shawn enjoyed learning interesting things that may not be taught in school from his grandfather.
One day, Shawn came running into the house while his grandfather was visiting. He told his grandfather about a class science project that he was very excited about.
Each student was going to grow a pot of bean plants. When the plants grew big and strong, the students were to plant them in a garden at the school. They each wanted to grow the strongest and best bean plant.
Shawn showed his grandfather the bean seeds. He explained that his teacher taught them how to make the seeds grow. First, they put the seeds on a wet paper towel. Then, they put them near a warm window. When the seeds sprout (发芽), they are ready to be transplanted (移栽) into a pot.
After listening to his grandson, Mr. Worth said, “You can do just as you learned, but I want to show you one more thing about growing plants.”
“When I was a boy, my father showed me how to grow strong plants,” he continued. “When the plant is starting out, you put some weight on it.” Shawn looked at his grandfather in surprise. “Doesn’t the weight stop the bean from growing?” he asked. “No, of course not. This way, you will force the bean plant to be strong and healthy. If you give it everything it wants, it will grow too fast and it will be weak. It will fall over when the first big wind blows.”
Shawn listened carefully. He was interested in growing the bean in the way his grandfather described. He could hardly wait to tell his friends what he had learned that day.

Is it true that you have learnt English for many years but still can’t understand a native (土生土长的) English speaker? And do you find that native speakers say a lot of things, but you can’t find them in any dictionary? Well, don’t worry. A lot of British people can’t understand each other, either!
There are different local accents (口音) across the UK, and different places have several different accents. There were at least six different accents born to London the last time I counted.
Worse than that, it is not just where a person is born in the UK that decides his or her accent. For example, a language and its accents often change across class or level of education. Another example is how language can be different among age groups in the UK. The words and pronunciation used by young people in the UK can be different from those used by adults. They are creating a “yoof culture”.
The word “yoof” is an informal (非正式) spelling of “youth”. Some people don’t see “yoof” to be a good word since its pronunciation is easier and lazier than “youth”. Other people see it as good, because it describes how young people are creating “identity”, a feeling of belonging to a group and knowing who you are.
When parents find it difficult to understand their children, the children can say more things without the checking of their parents. In this way, young people are starting to find more freedom. Even though some people feel worried about “yoof culture”, new words come and go like fashions.
So learners should have no fear about communicating with native speakers. Even British people don’t speak English properly! The UK no longer owns the English language.
根据材料内容选择最佳答案。
12. Why does the writer ask the questions in the first paragraph?
A. To make us think why we learn English.
B. To make us more interested in the passage.
C. To let us know we are not good at English.
D. To let us know native English speakers are hard to understand.
13. What can we learn about accents in the UK?
A. Where a person is born influences his accent.
B. People of different ages have the same accent.
C. Different class or level of education can’t influence accents.
D. London is divided into six parts because of people’s accents.
14. What does the underlined word “identity” mean?
A. 领导 B. 职位 C. 身份 D. 创意
15. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
16. What might the writer say to Li Hua, a Chinese middle school student?
A. Please study harder, or native speakers can’t understand your accent.
B. If you want to speak English better, you should have your own accent.
C. Don’t worry about having accents, for native speakers have accents too.
D. Never learn from British people because they don’t speak English properly.

Beauty in Spring Festival
Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year, is one of the most beautiful festivals in China. In my eyes, beauty can be seen everywhere during Spring Festival.
Firstly, beauty can be seen on houses in the countries or neighborhoods in cities. People decorate houses with Spring Festival couplets and lanterns. It’s not only a symbol of good wishes but also a way of spreading traditional culture.
Secondly, beauty can be seen on people’s smiling faces. People go back home from different work places for a formal reunion. Everybody wears new clothes and says “Happy New Year” to each other with smiles and excitement.
Last but not least, beauty can be seen on delicious food. Families, relatives and friends get together to communicate and send wishes. Big meals are always there to express warmth.
Let’s look forward and enjoy the beauty happily!
