Tons of people enjoy listening to different types of music while they paint, write, or draw. Many
believe that music helps get the creative juices flowing, but an international study is challenging that view
by putting volunteers through a few tests
The study was performed at three universities in Europe. The results suggested that any ability related to
verbal (与文字有关的) creativity became weaker when listening to most music
Volunteers in the project all spoke English as their first language. They were healthy and had no
problem with their bodies like eyes or ears
The test was simple word games. For example, volunteers were given three words, such as dress, shine
and flower. Then they were asked to find a word that could let others think of the three words in some
conditions. For example, the word, in the example above, may be "sun" (sundress, sunshine and sunflower)
Volunteers completed the tests in either a quiet room or with the background music playing foreigr
lyrics, English lyrics and instrumental music with no lyrics at all
The rescarch team also tested thc library background noises, but found that such noiscs made no
difference to people's crcativity, The study's authors believed that was because the library noise was a
“steady (平稳的)" environment which was not as loud as music with or without lyrics.
It's worth(值得) mentioning that music with well-known lyrics made people's creativity even weaker
though people said that the music improved their mood
So next time you sit down for a study with some music. you may give your brain something else instead
of your favoritc song
