Paul Durietz is a 76-year-old social studies teacher from Illinois. On September 1, 2023, he set a Guinness World Record for the world’s longest teaching career.
Paul has known since he was young that he wanted to be a social studies teacher. Social studies is the study of history, and how people, countries, and cultures are connected. He became interested in history after hearing stories from his father. On his mother’s side of the family, he had connections to a famous person from English history, which aroused his interest in studying the Middle Ages. At the age of 11, after many conversations with his father, Paul was certain social studies would be his field of study.
Paul began teaching at Woodland Middle School in Gurnee, Illinois in 1970. Ever since then, he’s been teaching social studies at the same school.
Things have changed a lot-since he began all those years ago. When he started, Richard Nixon was President of the United States, and the. Beatles were still together. This rock band was formed in Liverpool, England in 1960. At that time, the only way to make copies was with a “ditto machine (复印机)”, which used a purple ink.
There’re many activities in his teaching to help his students learn. For example, he has organized virtual field trips geography contests and special days about the US Civil War. He has even organized mock elections in school to help his students learn about politics. For much of his 53 years as a teacher, Paull has been in charge of the social studies program at Woodland. He’s helped to guide over 20 other social studies teachers at the school. “We should be full of freshness in things and stick to learning continuously,” says Paul, who is extremely proud that some of his students have become history teachers of him.
Paul has no plans to retire any time soon. “Keep working on what you love to do in life,” he says.
4. What played an important role in Paul’s career planning?
A. His father’s influence.
B. His mother’s encouragement.
C. His view of teaching history.
D. His understanding of social studies.
5. Why did the author mention the Beatles?

“Going for perfection is the tenet (信条) of my life.” Magee rushed home crying after seeing that she’d received an A-minus on her grade report. Growing up she had learned that the way to receive recognition and love from family members and teachers was to be a high achiever. So to Magee, that A-minus felt like a failure. “I was shattered,” she said. “In that moment, I felt like my self-worth as a human had fallen far below what it would have been if I’d gotten an A or an A-plus.”
Magee’s turning a good grade into a cause of her inferiority (自卑) is an example of a growing trend in recent years: perfectionist behavior. Perfectionism is a universal cultural phenomenon. High levels of perfectionism were linked with depression, anxiety, and self-harm. The constant stress of competitiveness and comparison can also leave people stressed and suffering from headaches and other health problems.
If a person is only rewarded for high achievement, over time they learn that their value as a person depends on being perfect. Instagram, Facebook and other social media platforms also encourage unhealthy comparisons. “It’s a real problem — those social media images end up being an standard that people can compare themselves to and a perfectionist is always trying to keep up with the Joneses,” Sherry, a clinical psychologist, said. And it’s never been harder to keep up with the Joneses, because today we are constantly bombed with seemingly perfect images of other peoples’ lives.
Eventually Magee learned that she had to let go a little and allow herself to show up with all her imperfections. She eventually learned to trust that she could show up, not being perfect, and still feel valued. “I can be imperfect and everything can be fine!”
8. Which of the following best explains “shattered” underlined in paragraph 1?
A. Delighted. B. Frightened. C. Discouraged. D. Amused.
9. Which of the following is NOT the cause of Magee’s interiority?
A. The unhealthy comparisons. B. The A-plus grade.
C. The perfectionism phenomenon. D. The sense of competitiveness.
10. What may Magee agree with finally?
A. It’s cool to be perfect. B. It’s fine to be imperfect.
C. It’s important to get an A-plus. D. It’s easy to keep up with the Joneses.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. Perfectionism is killing our mental health.
B. Perfectionism is a growing cultural phenomenon.
C. Accepting one’s imperfection is becoming a trend.
D. Imperfection is temporary and perfection is forever.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. B 11. A

【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Perfectionism is a universal cultural phenomenon. High levels of perfectionism were linked with depression, anxiety, and self-harm. The constant stress of competitiveness and comparison can also leave people stressed and suffering from headaches and other health problems. (完美主义是一种普遍的文化现象。高水平的完美主义与抑郁、焦虑和自我伤害有关。持续的竞争和比较压力也会使人感到压力重重,并遭受头痛和其他健康问题的困扰。)”可知,这一段提到了导致Magee内心挣扎的几个因素,包括不健康的比较、完美主义现象和竞争感。B选项“B. The A-plus grade”并未被列为导致她内心挣扎的原因,而是她期望达到的标准之一。故选B项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“She eventually learned to trust that she could show up, not being perfect, and still feel valued. “I can be imperfect and everything can be fine!” (她最终学会了相信,即使不完美,她也可以展现自己,并感到自己有价值。“我可以不完美,而且一切都会很好!”)”可知,Magee最终接受了不完美是可以的。故选B项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段““Going for perfection is the tenet (信条) of my life.” Magee rushed home crying after seeing that she’d received an A-minus on her grade report. D
Plants may tell us when they’re in trouble. Thirsty tomato and tobacco plants make clicking sounds, researchers have found. The sounds are ultrasonic (超声波的), meaning they are too high-pitched for human ears to hear. But when the sounds are transformed to lower pitches, they sound like popping bubbles (爆破的泡泡). Plants also make clicks when their stems (茎) are cut.
“It’s not like the plants are screaming,” says Lilach Hadany, an evolutionary biologist working at Tel Aviv University in Israel. “Plants may not mean to make these noises. We’ve shown only that plants create informative sounds.”
Hadany and her colleagues first heard the clicks when they set microphones next to plants on tables in a lab. The microphones caught some noises. But the researchers needed to make sure that the clicking was coming from the plants. So, the scientists placed plants inside soundproof boxes in the basement, far from the noise of the lab. There, microphones picked up ultrasonic pops from thirsty tomato plants. Though it was outside humans’ hearing range, the clicking made by plants was about as loud as a normal conversation.
Cut tomato plants and dry or cut tobacco plants clicked, too. But plants that had enough water or hadn’t been cut stayed mostly quiet. Wheat, corn and grapevines also made sounds when stressed out.
The researchers don’t yet know why plants click. Bubbles forming and then popping inside plant tissues that transport water might make the noises. But however they happen, pops from crops could help farmers, the researchers suggest. Microphones, for example, could monitor fields or greenhouses to detect when plants need to be irrigated (灌溉).
Hadany wonders whether other plants and insects already tune into plant pops. Other studies have suggested that plants respond to sounds. And animals from pests (害虫), moths to mice can hear in the range of the ultrasonic clicks. Sounds made by plants could be heard from around five meters away. Hadany’s team is now studying what the living things near the plants will do after hearing the sounds.
12. What is the main idea of the first paragraph?
A. Interpreting plant sounds isn’t easy.
B. Plants sound off when they’re in trouble.
C. It’s interesting to hear the sounds of plants.
D. Plants make sounds in a different way from humans.
13. Why did the scientists put plants inside soundproof boxes in the basement?
A. To enjoy the sounds made by the plants.
B. To have a better conversation with the plants.
C. To find out whether the plants did make sounds.
D. To keep the plant sounds within their hearing range.
14. In what way can microphones be used to benefit plants?
A. Weed prevention. B. Pest control.
C. Temperature monitoring. D. Timely irrigation.
15. What still remains unknown to Hadany’s team?
A. Whether the sounds of plants can travel far.
B. Whether animals can hear the sounds of plants.
C. How the neighbors of plants respond to their sounds.
D. How plants and animals communicate with each other.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. C

Laura Mulvihill felt the ride was probably very unusual when she picked up 89-year-old Ronald Dembner from the Veteran’s Hospital in Henry County, Georgia. It was obvious that he was struggling and in bad shape. But it wasn’t until they arrived at his home that her worst doubts were confirmed. Expecting to be greeted by family members, she was greeted by something out of a nightmare (噩梦) episode of Hoarders instead.
Mr. Ronald’s home was covered with rubbish. The counters, carpets, and walls looked dirty. The room smelt absolutely terrible. Because all of Ronald’s family members had passed away, he had no one to assist him. Even the home care nurses had stopped coming to visit as a result of the extremely awful living conditions. He was completely alone, except for his dog, Homer, who had taken to pooping in the house. Unable to clean up after himself or Homer but terrified of losing his home and his dog, Mr. Ronald was too afraid to reach out for help.
Mulvihill, however, was not. Horrified by what she witnessed, she decided to take matters into her own hands. She spent hours on the phone, contacting the fire department, adult services, the Chamber of Commerce and Habitat for Humanity. No one could offer any help. “Everyone said, mentally he’s fine, he’s just older. So nobody will help,” she said.
Finally, with all other resources running out, she posted a call to arms on social media, creating the group. Helping Mr. Ronald. She explained the situation. She wrote in part, “I drove him home and he asked me to help him inside. He lives alone and cannot keep up with his pet. The house is terrible.” She went on to explain that “the main issues are dog poop (1 dog) and general disrepair (no railing on the stairs, soiled carpet and furniture, etc)”. She knew it would take an army to make things right. Luckily, she had found one,2000 strong. The army was formed.

【答案】范文
Dozens of volunteers came forward to help, with a desire to make a difference. From young students to retired seniors, they banded together to lend a helping hand. The group organized cleaning sessions, where they scrubbed floors, washed walls, and disinfected every surface. They also repaired the broken railing on the stairs and replaced the soiled carpets and furniture. The volunteers didn’t stop there; they brought in food and supplies for Mr. Ronald and Homer, ensuring they had everything they needed. The transformation was remarkable, and the house was soon transformed into a clean and comfortable home.
Mr. Ronald was deeply moved by what Mulvihill and the volunteers had done. Tears streamed down his face as he expressed his gratitude for their kindness and compassion. He couldn’t believe that so many people would come together to help him, a stranger, in need. He told Mulvihill that he felt like he had a new lease on life and that he was finally able to enjoy his home again. He promised to take better care of himself and Homer, and he thanked the volunteers for giving him a second chance. Mulvihill was overwhelmed by the response and knew that her efforts had made a significant difference in Mr. Ronald’s life. She was proud to be a part of such a compassionate community and hoped that their story would inspire others to lend a helping hand.

A. To prove Paul once taught music.
B. To show Paul likes music as well.
C. To say Paul contributes a lot to music.
D. To stress Paul’s long teaching career.
6. Which best describes Paul’s teaching style?
A. Dull. B. Academic. C. Creative. D. Demanding.
7. What can we learn from Paul’s story?
A. It is never too late to teach.
B. Education is the key to success.
C. Positive thinking results in victory.
D. Curious minds don’t feel satisfied.
