A Backcountry for beginners: the best destinations in Canada When carried out safely, your first backcountry trip will leave you lifelong memories, opening a getaway into nature. But the leap from car camping to backcountry requires preparation and learning. Here are some recommended trips for backcountry beginners: Grundy Lake Provincial Park The park’s 9 backcountry sites are a 30-minute paddle (划船) away. Grundy Lake is motor-boat free. Your sites are quiet enough for a true backcountry trip. Each site comes equipped with a fire pit (坑) and a picnic table. Bon Echo Provincial Park Many visitors don’t know about the 25 canoe-in campsites located on Joeperry and Pearson Lakes. A short canoe trip of 30-minute will get you to your campsite. At each campsite, you will find a picnic table, tent space and a toilet nearby. Charleston Lake Provincial Park Experience the best of the Canadian Shield, and hike or paddle your way to 10 backcountry campsites. Travel time can range from 10 minutes to 2 hours. All sites come equipped with elevated tent platforms, a picnic table, a fire grill, and a toilet. Murphys Point Provincial Park Paddle through Big Rideau Lake (part of the historic Rideau waterway) to access 14 backcountry campsites. Most are located 5-45 minutes away from the boat launch. You’ll find a picnic table tent space, and a pit toilet nearby each site. Paddle back to visit Murphys’ piece of living history: the Mica Mine! Remember: backcountry travel requires careful consideration of packing, route planning, meal planning, safety, and your skill level. 1. You can do the followings at Grundy Lake Provincial Park EXCEPT _______. A. Paddling. B. Having a picnic. C. Cooking. D. Taking a motor-boat. 2. Which park has the most campsites? A. Grundy Lake Provincial Park. B. Bon Echo Provincial Park. C. Charleston Lake Provincial Park. D. Murphys Point Provincial Park. 3. In which section of a newspaper can you probably find this passage? A. Health. B. Travel. C. Education. D. Science. B At the back of our house there was half a mu of vacant land. “It’s a pity to let it go to waste like that,” Mother said. “Since you are all so fond of peanuts, let us open it up and make it a peanut garden.” At that my brother, sister and I were all delighted and so were the young housemaids. And then some went to buy seeds, some began to dig up the ground and others watered it and, in a couple of months, we had a harvest! “Let us have a harvest festival tonight to celebrate,” Mother suggested, “and ask Dad to join us for a taste of our fresh peanuts. What do you say?” We all agreed, of course. Mother cooked the peanuts in a variety of styles and told us to go to the garden for the celebration. The weather was not very good that night but, to our great delight, even Father put in an appearance. “Do you like peanuts?” Father asked. “Yes!” We all answered eagerly. “But who can tell me what is good about peanuts?”. “They taste very delicious,” my sister took the lead. “They can be made into oil,” my elder brother followed. “They are inexpensive,” I said. “Almost everyone can afford them and everyone enjoys eating them. I think that's what is good about peanuts.” “In fact there are quantities of good points of peanuts,” Father said, “but one thing I do appreciate is particularly good about them. Unlike apples, peaches and pomegranates that hang their bright and beautiful fruits up on the branches, attracting your admiration, peanuts lie buried in the soil, waiting until they are ripe before letting people dig them up. And you can't tell whether they bear fruits or not just by their stems above ground.” We all agreed and Mother nodded her head, too. “So you should try to be like the peanuts,” Father went on, “because they are neither grand nor beautiful, but useful.” “That is what I expect of you all.” We stayed up late that night, eating all the peanuts Mother had cooked for us. But Father's words remained rooted in my mind till this day. 4. How many good points about peanuts are mentioned in this passage? A. 2. B. 3. C. 4. D. 5. 5. What did Father want his children to do in the future? A. To plant peanuts. B. To hold more celebration gatherings. C. To show off their abilities. D. To be useful instead of seeking fame. 6. How did Father tell the good quality about peanuts? A. By examples. B. By comparison. C. By explanation. D. By pictures. 7. What can be inferred from the passage? A. The family was too poor to afford other fruits. B. Father seldom joined them in such activities. C. Father didn't like eating apples or peaches. D. The peanuts are too shy to show their fruits. D Every driver is familiar with the horrible blind spot problem. However, it is more than just an annoyance. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over 840,000 car accidents occur due to the blind spot. Those zones which cannot be directly observed by the driver often causes incidents that result in serious property damage and in some cases even death. While drivers can take precautions such as adjusting the driver's seat and side mirrors properly, installing backup cameras and so on, they won't remove the invisible spots completely. Therefore, the driver will always have to carry the responsibility of being constantly aware of blind spots because failing to do that can lead to accidents. Luckily, now there's a solution to that and it comes from a 14-year-old girl, who doesn't even have a driver's license yet. However, not being able to drive didn't prevent Alaina Gassier from understanding the important issue of traffic accidents resulting from blind spots. In fact, she knows the problem so well that she actually solved it for us. And the way she did it is nothing but genius. Her project is called "Improving Automobile Safety by Removing Blind Spots'* and work in a relatively simple way as she explained: "I did that by having a camera behind the A — pillar of a car and the camera sent the video to a projector that projected (投射)the image onto the pillar essentially making it invisible and making the driver see behind it." To complete this invention, she used easily attainable materials such as a webcam, projector, and 3D-printed materials that project the view from outside your vehicle onto the blind spots of your car. Gassier was awarded for her life-saving invention. It earned her the top place in a nationwide competition for middle schoolers with the $25,000 Samueli Foundation Prize in honor of overall STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) excellence. 12. Why is the blind spot problem more than an annoyance? A. It is familiar to every driver. B. It cannot be seen by drivers. C. It may cause serious accidents. D. It is often overlooked by drivers. 13 What does the underlined word "that" in Paragraph 2 refer to? A. Adjusting the driver's seat. B. Being constantly aware of blind spots. C. Adjusting side mirrors. D. Installing backup cameras. 14. Which of the following statement is wrong? A. Gassier is a student, who can't drive. B. Gassier is talented enough to make the invention. C Gassier uses easily-accessible materials in her invention. D. Gassier won first place in an international competition. 15. What can be the best title for this passage? A. A Great Invention from A Young Driver B. Improving Vehicle Sale by Removing Blind Spots C. A Girl's Way to Solve the Blind Spot Problem in Cars D. She couldn’t help weeping when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Having wandered in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave. The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?” “Oh, yes... but I don’t have money on me,” she replied. “That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man. “Come in.” The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently. “What is it?” asked the man kindly. “Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny. “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!” Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?” Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered Mother’s familiar face and weathered hands. “Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.” On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home. As Janice approached the doorway, she took a deep breath. Paragraph 1: When Janice pushed the door open and entered the home, she found her mother was not in. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Her thoughts was brought back by a gentle touch on her hair. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 潮阳一中明光学校2024-2025学年度第一学期第二阶段考试 高二英语试卷 (本试卷四大题,满分130分,考试用时120分钟) 第一部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分50分) 第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B,C和D项中选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 A Backcountry for beginners: the best destinations in Canada When carried out safely, your first backcountry trip will leave you lifelong memories, opening a getaway into nature. C It may cause serious accidents. D. It is often overlooked by drivers. 13. What does the underlined word "that" in Paragraph 2 refer to? C. Gassier uses easily-accessible materials in her invention. D. Gassier won first place in an international competition. 15. What can be the best title for this passage? A. A Great Invention from A Young Driver B. F 【解析】 【分析】这是一篇说明文。 故选A。 本空后文有“when you are speaking to them”,也暗示了本题的答案。 Always look the person in the eye呼应,第四题中的say something like与选项C中的answer呼应,第五题中的Written forms of communication can be tricky 与选项F中的have someone else read it呼应。 I shall never forget those winters. The house was quiet, with only the soft hum of the refrigerator breaking the silence. Janice felt a pang of guilt as she looked around the familiar surroundings, remembering the argument they had earlier. She walked over to the kitchen and saw a note on the table, written in her mother’s neat handwriting. “Janice, I’m sorry for losing my temper. I’ve gone to the market to buy some fresh ingredients for dinner. Let’s talk when I get back.” Janice’s heart sank as she read the note, realizing that her mother had been worried about her and had even apologized first. She felt a wave of gratitude and love wash over her, and decided to wait for her mother to return, ready to apologize and make things right. Paragraph 2: Her thoughts were brought back by a gentle touch on her hair. Janice turned around to see her mother standing there, with a look of concern and relief on her face. “Janice, you’re home! I was so worried about you,” her mother said, hugging her tightly. Janice felt tears welling up in her eyes as she hugged her mother back. “Mom, I’m sorry for what I said and did. I didn’t mean it. I was just so upset,” Janice apologized, her voice trembling. Her mother smiled and wiped away a tear from Janice’s cheek. “It’s okay, sweetie. I’m sorry too. Let’s not argue anymore and enjoy our dinner together,” she said, holding Janice’s hand and leading her to the dining table. As they sat down to eat, Janice felt a sense of warmth and peace wash over her, knowing that no matter what happened, her mother’s love and support would always be there for her. 词汇激活 行为类 想起:remember/think of 购买:buy/purchase 决定做某事:decide to do sth/be determined to do sth 拥抱:hug/embrace 情绪类 内疚:guilt/compunction 担心的:worried/concerned 【点睛】[高分句型1]Janice felt tears welling up in her eyes as she hugged her mother back.(运用了as引导时间状语从句) [高分句型2]As they sat down to eat, Janice felt a sense of warmth and peace wash over her, knowing that no matter what happened, her mother’s love and support would always be there for her.(运用了as引导时间状语从句,现在分词作状语,that引导宾语从句,no matter what引导让步状语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
