12-year-old Girl Built a Robot to Find Plastics in the Ocean
When walking along the beach, Anna Du noticed plastics there. She reached down to pick them up, and quickly realized there were many more tiny pieces than she could deal with. It seemed impossible to clean them all up.
At the age of 12, this girl tried to solve the problem like any good scientist—first by doing a little research.
That’s how she learned that 8 million tons of plastics end up in the oceans every year.
Then she got to work building something that could help solve the problem; a remote-operated vehicle (遥控潜水器), or ROV. Her ROV can move through water. Also, it can find plastics on the ocean floor.
“She has a very good engineering sense to break down a problem like this and then go after it,” says engineer Casey Machado. “It sounds simple, but it’s a level of thinking that’s really amazing.”
Du started attending public events and workshops at a university when she was five years old, and so she picked up the engineering skills necessary to build her ROV. She says actually getting her ROV to move through water well was not easy. She failed many times, but she never gave up trying and testing.
When asked about future plans, she mentions, “I know I want to be an engineer because I like building things to help solve world problems.” “But I’m not sure what kind of engineer I want to be yet.”
Du thanks her parents, who for years have taken her to student outreach activities, for supporting her interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). She says she has been able to meet students and scientists there.
根据短文内容,回答下列问题。
1.What was Anna Du doing when she noticed plastics?
2.How old was Du when she did a little research to solve the problem?
3.What can Du’s ROV do?
4.Why does Du want to be an engineer in the future?
5.What do you think made Du succeed in building her ROV?

Table manners are very different in every country. For example, when you are in England you must not lift your soup plate to your mouth. This is very impolite. But when you are in Japan this is completely normal. Lifting your plate to your mouth in Japan is a traditional way of eating your soup. And also in Japan you don’t have to worry about making a noise when you drink it. It just shows that you really like the food! But it is not the same in Britain, so you shouldn’t make a noise when eating there.
In Britain, people don’t put their hands or arms on the table during the meal. But in Mexico, guests keep their hands on the table all the time. In fact, you should watch what your hands do very carefully. In Arab countries, it is impolite when you eat with your left hand, so don’t do it ! In all the cultures it is impolite to speak when you are eating.
In Ukraine you should not start eating first; you should wait for all the others to start eating with you. You also have to say “Please” and “Thank you” every time you ask for and get something. If you don’t like some food, don’t make faces and don’t say, “Yuk!I hate that!” The best way to avoid making mistakes in other countries is to watch the host and try to do as he does.
根据短文内容, 回答下列问题。
1.In which country can you lift your bowl to your mouth?
2.Where do the guests keep their hands all the time in Mexico?
3.Which hand can’t you use when eating in Arab countries?

September is a big month for students. They go back to school, they meet their classmates again, and they celebrate Teachers’ Day. Teachers’ Day falls on September 10th every year. Here is some information about its history.
In China, people celebrated it in June in the 1930s. Then in 1939, the holiday was moved to August 27th of the lunar calendar, the birthday of China’s great teacher Confucius (孔子). In 1985, the day was changed to September 10th.
Then do people in other countries celebrate Teachers’ Day? Yes, of course, but not on September 10. Let’s travel around the world and see Teachers’ Day in different countries.
In India, people celebrate it on September 5 to remember Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the second President of India. His birthday was September 5. Indian students hold different activities to show their respect and love to their teachers.
In Russia, it is on October 5. Before 1994, this day was set on the first Sunday of September. In the United States, it is a holiday on Tuesday of the first fall week of May.
In Thailand, National Teachers’ Day is on January 16. The first Teachers’ Day was in 1957. In Iran, people celebrate it on May 2 every year to remember the famous Iranian professor Ayatollah Morteza Motahhari. He died on May 2.
Although different countries celebrate Teachers’ Day on different days, their purpose of showing respect and love to teachers just stays the same.

When looking at a pair of old chopsticks, most people would see nothing but waste. But Felix Bock would see boxes, tables, shelves and so on.
In 2016, Felix Bock, a doctoral student at the University of British Columbia, Canada, found out people threw away about 100,000 pairs of chopsticks every day in Vancouver alone. He felt the need to do something. So he started the company ChopValue in the same year. The company collected used chopsticks from restaurants, schools and shopping centers in Canada and the US and turned them into furniture and other artworks. Now in its fifth year, with the rapid growth of the company, Bock employs 40 people, and using his special methods of steam and press machines, he has recycled 32 million pairs of chopsticks.
Bock takes pride in his work. And he hopes the idea behind ChopValue will help people rethink what they see as waste. “I believe every small action can help,” he said. “And I am happy that my business provides a new way for people.” Hundreds of restaurants across North America pay a small sum of money to Bock for the recycling of their used chopsticks. Bock doesn’t stop there. Now he is busy taking his business to more countries and has set up factories for recycling local wood like chopsticks in 10 countries.
根据短文内容,回答下列问题。
1.When did Felix Bock study at the university in Canada?
2.Did Bock start his company when he was a doctoral student?
3.How many pairs of chopsticks has Bock recycled in the fifth year?

At the end the year, it’s time to start thinking about everyone’s favorite topic: gifts! More specifically (确切地), the giving of gifts and the culture surrounding them. Coming from the US, I have found gift-giving to be quite different in China compared to my home country. One example is the timing of when to open a gift. In the US, the person who gives the gift (let’s call them the “gifter”) will often want to see the person who gets the gift (the “giftee”) open the present as soon as they get it. They want to see their reaction (反应) of excitement and joy. In China, however, it’s more polite to thank the gifter for the gift and open it later in the privacy (私密).
Another aspect (方面) I found different was the openness and directness (直接) of giving money. Although people in the US might give money to their children, it is usually done very secretly with the money put in a card and not discussed out loud. In China, money will be put in a flashy (显眼的) red envelope and given to giftees an open and direct way.
Finally, the monetary value (金钱的价值) of the gift can play a big role in China in ways that are different from the US. An expensive gift in the US is usually greeted with great excitement. But in China, it can make the giftee feel awkward (尴尬的). Besides, they will also get a sense of having to return the favor (恩惠) in the future to the gifter.
So, the next time you give a gift to somebody, remember that culture and meaning are part of every action we take.
1.When do people in the US open a gift ?
2.To be polite, what will a Chinese giftee do after getting a gift?
3.What does the author think of the way Chinese people give money as gifts?
4.Is it OK to send gifts with high price in the US?
5.How do Chinese people feel when they receive expensive gifts?

Today I met Li Mei, a beautiful new singer from southern China who is taking Asia by storm! This year she is touring (在巡回演出) all of Asia, so we met at he hotel which she is staying in. I only had one hour to find out everything I could, so I asked her plenty of questions about music and movies that she likes to give you a look into her life!
First of all, I asked her who her musical heroes are, and she had an interesting answer!
“Well, I suppose it’s my mom! she is the director of a local music school, since I was young, I’ve seen how she helped others find happiness through music. I watched them perform and saw the praise they got—I wanted that praise, too!” said Li Mei.
I asked why she ended up singing instead of being a musician.
“I have a good voice, but I’m not such a good musician! I prefer singing, especially songs that are lively because I like to dance, too. I sing and dance while musicians play!”
In that case, what kind of music does she like dancing to?
“I have to say my own! And I prefer music that is fast so I can do hip-hop dancing (嘻哈舞蹈)—that dance style is really exciting! It’s hard work but it’s a lot of fun. It’s good exercise, too!” said Li Mei.
Soon, Li Mei had to leave to prepare for her concert. I had time for just one more question, so I asked her what she likes to do to relax. Does she ever go on a vacation?
“Yes! It’s so important to take time off once in a while. I like vacations that are relaxing so I usually visit my hometown and stay with my mom and dad. I watch movies, hang out with my friends and eat lots of mom’s cooking!” said Li Mei.

A company (公司) in San Francisco, California has found a way to turn used plastic bottles (塑料) into women’s shoes. Every day, millions of Americans drink water and other drinks from plastic bottles. More than 60 million of them are thrown away each day. Many of the plastic bottles are thrown in landfills or burned with other waste products. A San Francisco start-up company called Rothy’s, however, turns this plastic waste into women’s shoes.
Rothy’s shoes are sold online. They are low heel shoes, with either a rounded or pointed toe. They come in different colors and style. They are either 125 or 145, depending on the style of each pair. After American actress Gwyneth Paltrow discovered them last year, the demand (需求) for the shoes grew.
Roth Martin, one of the bosses of the company, says that when the shoes wear out, customers can return them to a company that uses them as materials to make other products. For now, the shoes are only available to be shipped (上市) in the United States. However, the company says it will add international shipping in the near future. Would you like to buy a pair of the environmentally friendly shoes?

“May we all blessed with longevity. Though miles apart, we are still able to share the beauty of the moon together (但愿人长久,千里共婵娟)”, wrote Su Shi, a poet during the Song Dynasty, in his well-known poem to his younger brother Su Zhe.
The moon is at its brightest on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar (阴历). On this day, people celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival. It has been enjoying great popularity all over the country.
In ancient China, that day was a harvest (收获) festival because crops (庄稼) were harvested during that period. It was a time for relaxation and celebration.
Just like Thanksgiving in Western countries, families also try to get together for the Mid-Autumn Festival in China. Usually, no matter how far away or how busy they are, people will try to return home for the celebration.
The Mid-Autumn has its own special food just as other traditional Chinese holidays. People eat moon cakes with fillings such as sugar and eggs. The round shape of the cake makes it look like the full moon. The full moon and moon cakes stand for family reunion (团聚).
With the beautiful moon up in the sky, people sit together, enjoy the full moon, eat moon cakes and fruits, share the stories, and express the best wishes for the family members and friends who live far away.
1.Who did Su Shi write the poem to in Paragraph One?
2.Why was the Mid-Autumn Festival a harvest festival in ancient China?
3.Do Thanksgiving and the Mid-Autumn Festival have anything in common?
4.What other traditional Chinese festivals do you like? List one of them and tell the reason. (Write 30 words or more)

How to be green
By Wang Lingling
How green are you? Answer these questions and find out.
·Do you walk or ride a bike to school?
·Do you buy new clothes just because they are modern?
·Do you turn off the lights when you leave the room?
·Do you take your own bag when shopping and not ask for a plastic bag?
·Do you buy drinks in bottles? And what do you do with the bottles when they are empty?
·Do you divide the waste into things to recycle and things to throw away?
We all need a healthy environment, but we produce waste every day, and it is harmful to our environment. Repeat these three words daily: reduce, reuse and recycle. Reduce
Reduce means “use less” . Do not waste things. It saves money and causes less pollution. Do not order more food than you can finish. Turn off the lights when you do not need them. Before you buy something new, think whether it is really necessary because maybe the old one is just as good! Reuse
Reuse means “use again”. Use things for as long as possible. Look after them so that they will last. Repair them if possible. Do not throw them away and buy new ones. Do not use paper cups or paper bags. It is better to use china cups and cloth bags because they can be used many times. Recycle Recycle means “change things into something else to be reused” Although it takes energy to change things into something else, it is better than throwing things away or burning them. We throw tons of rubbish away each year, and we have to make a change. Divide your rubbish into plastic, glass, paper and rubber. Develop a recycling policy for the whole community. Buy products such as recycled paper to help save trees.
We cannot hope for rapid change, but let’s take these simple steps today so that we will save the world for our grandsons and granddaughters tomorrow.
1.Why does the writer say “Repeat these three words daily: reduce, reuse and recycle.” in Paragraph 2?
2.How can we use things as long as possible?
3.What does the “simple steps” refer to?
4.Do you think it is necessary for us to learn how to be green? Why or why not? Write 30 words or more.

Many people ask me what my favorite invention is. I find it very hard to answer them, because there are so many things in my life that I can choose. However, I have chosen a pen. Don’t you think it’s surprising?
I know that to most people a pen is very boring, but to me, it stands for (代表) possibility. There are so many things you can do with a pen. You can write a novel or a song, record information, or draw a picture.
A pen is like the beginning of something amazing to me. Every day, I write a new page with my pen, and I am slowly making a path (路) for my future. Maybe I will be a scientist and change the world with my discoveries. Maybe I’ll become a musician and touch people’s hearts with my music. Or perhaps I will be a writer and move people through words, or a teacher to help children grow into the kind of people that they want to be.
There are so many possibilities as to what I will do with my life, but I know that with the pen in my hand, I will write a good future for myself. Tell me what future you will write for yourself.
1.Why does a pen stand for possibility according to the text?
2.How does a writer move people according to the text?
3.What does the text mainly tell us?
4.What invention is important to you? Why? Write 30 words or more.

Collecting As a Hobby
Collecting must be one of the various human activities, and it’s one that many psychologists (心理学家) find more attractive.
Some people collect because they want to make money. This could be called an instrumental (工具性) reason for collecting. They’ll look for antiques (古董,古玩) that they can buy cheaply and expect to sell at a profit (赢利). But there may well be a psychological element, too—buying cheap and selling dear can give the collector a sense of achievement.
Another motive for collecting is the desire (渴望) to find something special, such as a rare early recording by a particular singer. Some may spend therir whole lives in a hunt for this, Psychologically, this can give a purpose to a life. There is a danger, though, that if the individual is enough lucky enough to find what they’re looking for, they may feel empty, because the goal that drove them on has gone.
If you think about collecting postage stamps, another potential reason is its educational value. Stamp collecting opens a window to other countries, and to the plants, animals, or famous people shown on their stamps. In the 19th century, many collectors collected fossils, animals and plants from around the globe and their collections provided a large amount of information about the natural world. Without those collections, our understanding would be far behind what it is.
Not all collectors are interested in learning from their hobbies. Some people collect because of the need for a sense of control. Stamp collectors, for instance, arrange their stamps in albums very neatly according to their preferred principles.

Let’s sit in the “Green” seats!
Are you looking forward to next year’s Olympic Games? Paris 2024 promises to be a “green” event. Its organizers have found a new way of going green: In some of the venues (场馆) in Seine-Saint-Denis (塞纳—圣但尼省), about 11,000 seats are made from recycled plastic.
The seats were produced by recycling company Lemon Tri and a few partners (合作伙伴). They collected plastic waste and turned it into small pieces. These pieces were then mixed together and heated. After that, they were compressed (压缩) in machines. The results was black or white plastic sheets with flecks (斑点) of color. These sheets were then sanded (打磨), cut and assembled (组装) into seats.
Are these seats of good quality (质量), you may ask? Don’t worry! A number of tests have been carried out on them. There were a UV resistance (抗紫外线) test, a fire resistance test, and more. People will be able to sit safely in the chairs and enjoy the excitement of the game!
The seats were made from about 100 tons of plastic waste. About 80 percent of the plastic came from local recycling bins (箱). Local schools also collected about five million colored soda bottle caps and they were used in the making of the seats.
The seats not only help the environment, but also educate people about recycling.
Augustin Jaclin is the co-founder of Lemon Tri. “Our kids put their bottles in the bins,” he said. “Next year, they’ll sit on the seats made from these bottles. This will teach them to recycle more in their daily lives!”

2.What helps to make sure of the safety of the chairs?
3.Where did the material of the seats mostly come from?
4.Where else do you expect to see the green seats? Why?(Write 30 words or more)

When Cash Daniels was given “The Conservation Kid” for his efforts to protect the environment in 2021, he was only 12 years old. He got interested in environmental problems a few years ago, when he found plastic on a beach. It got him thinking about the influence that plastic pollution has on the environment, especially on rivers and oceans.
In his research, Cash found that rivers are at the heart of the problem. According to a 2021 report from Science Advances, far more rivers than thought—at least 1, 000 of them—are carrying large number of plastic into our oceans. This hit close to home for Cash. He lives in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The city sits on the Tennessee River, one of the most polluted in the world.
This information motivated(激发)Cash to take action. He made it his mission to clear litter from public spaces and local waterways.
At first, he and his parents worked together to pick up litter near the Tennessee River. But Cash soon realized that he would need more help.
So he organized community cleanup outings. Finally, he and other volunteers removed more than 11, 000 pounds of litter from the river.
Cash has also teamed up with businesses to recycle aluminum cans (铝罐). So far, he has recycled more than 2, 000 pounds of them. The money he earns from that supports river protection efforts.
Cash enjoys getting people, especially other kids, involved in environmental activism. He wrote a children’s book called One Small Piece, which he has read to students in his community. In it, he spent much time explaining the problem of pollution and how streams, rivers, and oceans are interconnected.
In January 2022, together with his friend Ella Grace, he founded Cleanup Kids. So far, The Cleanup Kids has had more than 50 members across the US, Canada, and Australia. The group encourages children to pick up and recycle litter, as well as to raise awareness(意识) among young people to understand how much human life depends on the nature. The goal for the young volunteers is to collect 1 million pieces of litter by the end of 2022. “Kids may be a small percentage of the population,” Cash says. “But they are 100% of the future.”
1.How old was Cash Daniels when he was given “The Conservation Kid”?
2.What did he find in his research?
3.What did he make as his mission?
4.Among Cash’s actions on environmental protection, which one touches you most? Why?

The World Health Organization says air pollution kills seven million people around the world each year. Even if polluted air does not kill us, it can make us very sick.
However, breathing dirty air may do more than hurt your body. It can also affect (影响) your brain and your ability to think.
A new study shows that air pollution can cause a “huge” reduction in our intelligence (智商). The researchers reported that long-term exposure (暴露) to air pollution can affect a person’s mental (智力的) abilities in two areas: language and math. Xi Chen, the researcher of the Yale School of Public Health led the study. He and his team found that breathing polluted air can reduce a person’s education level by about one year.
Chen said that the effect generally is worse for those over 64 years of age, for men and for those with little or no education. “The older persons—they are more affected. And we find, quite interestingly men are more affected than women. And people working outdoors are more affected than people working indoors.”
The researchers noted that the influence of pollution on language ability is even more serious as people age, especially among men and the less educated. Why are a person’s language skills more affected than math? There’s an important part in our brain: white matter. White matter is more connected with a person’s language skills. Studies have shown that air pollution has a great influence on the white matter in the brain.
Chen said that air pollution did affect the math skills just not as much as their language skills.
1.How many people are killed by air pollution each year?
2.In what areas can air pollution affect a person’s mental abilities?
3.How are a person’s language skills affected by air pollution?
4.What do you think of air pollution? What’s your advice on stopping air pollution?

Forests are home to many plants and animals. They also matter to humans in different ways. In China, Tree Planting Day arrives on March 12. It was set up to remind people about the importance of forests.
They enrich the soil. They take in CO2 and give out O2. They provide food for millions of people. They are home to 80 percent of the world’s animals, plants and insects.
China planted 3.6 million hectares of forest in 2021, according to the National Afforestation Committee(国际造林委员会). That’s more than double the area of Beijing. The committee called on all adults to plant three to five trees a year. During the past 40 years, volunteers planted nearly 79 billion trees across China. China has become the country with the largest increase in forest resources and the largest area of planted forests.
People are also encouraged to take part in greening projects. Alipay’s Ant Forest is one way to help.
Users get “green energy” points through daily actions, and the project will plant real trees for them. More than 600 million Chinese have used this app to live greener lifestyles and help protect the environment. Ant Forest has planted more than 360 million trees in China since 2016.
Besides big projects,China also focuses on small actions in cities. The committee said China now has more than 20,000 “pocket parks”—mini parks in cities. It has also built more than 80,000 kilometers of green pathways across the country.
In the future, China will take more actions to help our environment so that we can reach the goal of achieving carbon neutrality(碳中和) before 2060 successfully.

Mohamed Nasar, a 58-year-old fisherman has supported his family of five by fishing in the Nile River for 17 years. But he says fishermen like himself catch fewer fish every year as the Nile has been polluted. It has been filled with plastic bottles, bags and other waste.
“Most fish are caught in plastic bottles, and they die,” said Nasar.
A local environmental group named “VeryNile” has asked the island’s fishermen to use their boats to collect plastic bottles from the river. VeryNile says it buys the bottles at a higher price than the market price offered by traders or recycling factories (回收站).
The initiative (倡议) provides a solution for helping to clean up the Nile, while providing a way to make more money for fishermen like Nasar.
“This job has helped us a bit. We come and collect about 20 kilos of plastic bottles, and we get about 10 Egyptian pounds (EGP) for each,” Nasar said when he sat in his boat collecting bottles.
Nasar used to make about 100 EGP a day after six hours of fishing. Now only by collecting bottles, he can make 200 EGP every day.
Another fisherman said cleaner Nile water would mean more fish. “On the one hand, the Nile is cleaner, and on the other hand, the fishermen now have more ways to make money,” he said.
With the help of more than 40 fishermen, over the past year VeryNile has collected around 18 tons of plastic bottles, and most of them were sent to the recycling factory and were made into new things.
1.Why did Nasar catch fewer fish every year?
2.What did VeryNile ask the fishermen to do?
3.How much can Nasar make every day by collecting bottles now?
4.Do the fishermen have more ways to make money?
5.Where were most of the plastic bottles sent?

Chinese people often say they dream about the Duke of Zhou. Is the Duke of Zhou a real person?
The Duke of Zhou was a politician(政治家)who lived during the Western Zhou Dynasty(771 BC). His actual name was Ji Dan. He was the brother of King Wuwang of Zhou.
The Duke helped his brother beat the Kingdom of Shang and establish the dynasty. He himself was a regional ruler, or zhuhou. However, after two years, King Wuwang fell sick and wanted the Duke to become the king, but the Duke refused. King Wuwang’s oldest son then came to power—he was known as King Chengwang.
The Duke acted as a responsible regent(摄政王)to help his nephew. He put down a rebellion(暴乱). He came up with the idea of ruling through rituals(礼仪). When his nephew came of age, the Duke handed over power.
Confucius(孔子)saw the Duke of Zhou as a great politician. He studied the knowledge passed down from the Zhou Dynasty from a young age. He even dreamed about the Duke quite often. While serving the State of Lu, Confucius suggested that its ruler run the state with rituals, but the ruler didn’t listen to him. This is why he traveled to other states to promote the idea.
After many years, his idea still didn’t have much support. Already an old man, he said that he was too old to dream about the Duke of Zhou. Later, people started using “dreaming about the Duke of Zhou” to refer to remembering scholars of the past(先贤). Today, it simply refers to going to sleep.
1.What was the Duke of Zhou’s real name?
2.How did he help his brother?
3.What did King Wuwang want him to do while he was sick?
4.What was his idea about ruling a kingdom?
5.What did Confucius think about his idea?

World Water Day
World Water Day is celebrated on March 22 every year. It draws attention to the important role of water in our lives, the difficulties people face in getting water and solutions to these problems. It is reported by scientists that between 55 and 60 percent of the adult body is made of water. In normal conditions, the human body can only stay alive three or four days without water. We need water to stay alive, yet there are billions of people all over the world who do not have safe drinking water.
The problems communities facing
Except for the obvious health problems, a shortage of clean water means that some people in some areas—often women and children—have to spend hours every day walking to and from distant water supplies(供应). This means they don’t have time to focus their attention on their work, studies and other duties. So the search for water becomes their main jobs. For many people, the access(获得)to water has become increasingly difficult because of the increasing need for a limited resource.
What are the solutions?
In fact, many governments and organizations have already taken actions to offer good solutions. Waste-water recycling, storing rainwater, more efficient irrigation techniques(更有效的灌溉技术)and reforestation(重新造林) are good examples of how water can be used more efficiently. There are also many other charities(慈善机构)working on creating sustainable supplies(可持续性供给)of clean water for different communities around the world, but this important work needs to continue.
What we can do to help?
The theme(主题)of World Water Day 2021 is valuing water. The value of water is about much more than its price. Without an understanding of water’s true value, we will be unable to protect it. What we can do to help is to support charities, take part in the World Water Day events, be careful with how we use water in our own lives. We can also visit the UN World Water Day website to find out about an event near us and help spread around the world about the importance of saving water.
1.When is the World Water Day?
2.How long can human stay alive without water?
3.Why has the access to water become increasingly difficult?
4.What can we do in our daily life to save water? List at least three ways.

What did you do for the earth on the World Environment Day which falls on June 5th this year? Did you try to help protect the environment?
Su Yige, a vlogger(视频博主) on Bilibili, does so in her daily life. Su always takes her own bag when she goes shopping. She always gets what she wants from second-hand stores. And when she accidentally gets her clothes dirty, she takes out a handkerchief(手帕) from her handbag to wipe it off.
Su says her idea of avoiding waste partly comes from her thrifty(节俭的) family. Like her parents, Su hates to see people waste. She used to believe Westerners knew better about environmental protection. She was, then, shocked when she saw mountains of food waste being left outside of supermarkets in Canada seven years ago. She was a student at the time, but she decided to “step in” and started an environmental vlog on Bilibili. “In my videos, I share my love for old, recyclable things. And I also teach people to make natural washing powder,” Su said in an interview. Her videos have received up to 95,000 likes. Under her influence, many young people have reexamined their lifestyles. Ding Nan from Fujian, for example, has said goodbye to all bottled drinks and has been carrying a reusable plastic box with her wherever she goes.
Now, by exchanging tips with her fans and other environmental vloggers, Su has continued to avoid creating waste and has helped more people to be environmentally friendly. She wants people to know that a green life can be enjoyable, too, once one has been used to it.
Will you start to do something for the earth today—even though it is not World Environment Day?
1.When is World Environment Day?
2.Why does Su always take her own bag when she goes shopping?
3.What did Su do in her vlogs?
4.Did Su successfully spread the idea of environmental protection through her videos?
5.How do you feel about people like Su Yige?

【答案】1.Prople open a gift immediately. 2.They open the gift later in the privacy of the giftee’s home. 3.The author thinks the monetary value of the gift can play a big role in China. 4.Yes, it is. 5.It can make the giftee feel awkward.
【分析】本文讲的是中国和美国在送礼方面的差异。
1.根据文中“In the US, the person who gives the gift (let’s call them the “gifter”) will often want to see the person who gets the gift (the “giftee”) open the present as soon as they get it.”可知美国人会立即打开礼物,故填 Prople open a gift immediately.
2.根据文中“In China, however, it’s more polite to thank the gifter for the gift and open it later in the privacy (私密).” 可知在中国,更礼貌的做法是感谢送礼物的人,但收礼者稍后在家中私下打开礼物,故填They open the gift later in the privacy of the giftee’s home.
3.根据文中“The monetary value (金钱的价值) of the gift can play a big role in China in ways that are different from the US.”可知作者认为礼物的金钱价值在中国会发挥重要作用,故填The author thinks the monetary value of the gift can play a big role in China.
4.根据文中“An expensive gift in the US is usually greeted with great excitement.”可知,在美国,一份昂贵的礼物是让人兴奋的,此处应进行肯定回答。故填Yes, it is.
5.根据文中“But in China, it can make the giftee feel awkward (尴尬的). Besides, they will also get a sense of having to return the favor (恩惠) in the future to the gifter.” 可知在中国,这可能会让收礼的人感到尴尬,故填It can make the giftee feel awkward.

【答案】1.To tell us the importance of the three words. They are useful/helpful to the environment. 2.①Look after them so that they will last. ②Repair them if possible. ③Do not throw them away and buy new ones. 3.It refers to “reduce, reuse and recycle”. 4.Yes. Because we all need a healthy environment, but we produce waste everyday and it is harmful to the environment. If everyone can start to reduce, reuse and recycle from now on, we can help save the world not only for ourselves but also for the grandsons and granddaughters tomorrow.
【导语】本文主要介绍了如何过绿色生活。
1.根据“We all need a healthy environment, but we produce waste every day, and it is harmful to our environment. Repeat these three words daily: reduce, reuse and recycle.”可知每天重复这三个词:减少、重复使用和回收,因为这三个词很重要,有助于帮助保护环境。故填To tell us the importance of the three words. They are useful/helpful to the environment.
2.根据“Use things for as long as possible. Look after them so that they will last. Repair them if possible. Do not throw them away and buy new ones”可知尽可能长时间地使用东西。照顾好它们,这样它们才会长久,如有可能,请进行修理,不要把它们扔掉,买新的。故填①Look after them so that they will last. ②Repair them if possible. ③Do not throw them away and buy new ones.
3.根据“Repeat these three words daily: reduce, reuse and recycle.”以及“We cannot hope for rapid change, but let’s take these simple steps”可知每天重复这三个词:减少、重复使用和回收,这对保护环境很重要,所以应该采取这些简单的步骤,故此处划线部分指代“减少、重复使用以及回收”。故填It refers to “reduce, reuse and recycle”.
4.开放性试题,言之有理即可。参考答案为Yes. Because we all need a healthy environment, but we produce waste everyday and it is harmful to the environment. If everyone can start to reduce, reuse and recycle from now on, we can help save the world not only for ourselves but also for the grandsons and granddaughters tomorrow.

【答案】1.Because there are so many things you can do with a pen. 2.Through words. 3.Why a pen is the most important invention for him. 4.A pen. Because with the pen in my hand, I will write a good future for myself and I can write a novel or a song, record information, or draw a picture.
