1. 抓住四个"W"和一个"H",就是边读边用铅笔做些标记,把What (事件),When(时间),Where(地点),Why(原因),How(经过)划出来。

Do you ever find yourself sleeping during your daily work? It’s so common to feel sleepy and tired during the day these days because you have to work non-stop and have no time to have a good nap (小睡). Some people might think you are lazy if you take a nap during the work. But a lot of studies have shown that taking a nap can have a good influence on productivity and creativity. In order to make it easier for people to get good naps anywhere, a company from Japan has made a new kind of sleeping box—Giraffenap. Just as the name suggests, it means in the sleeping box, you will have a nap while standing, just like the posture of the giraffe.
The designer says napping while standing or lying down are both effective. But if you lie down, you may fall deeply asleep and have difficulty waking up. Your brain will feel foggy and you’ll be too sleepy to focus on your work. But napping while standing can relax both mind and body in a short time. What’s more, in the sleeping box, you can shut out light and nap in a dark and quiet place which provides a good sleeping environment. Last but not least, the boxes save space. They are about the size of a public phone booth, so there’s no need for a special sleeping room with beds.
Now the Giraffenap boxes are put in coffee shops and restaurants all over the country. As long as you pay about 41 yuan, you can take a short nap for half an hour in the box and get a cup of coffee for free. And if it is accepted well, we might see them in other places as well. Do you want to have a try?
1.What do we know from the first paragraph?
A.You can lie down in the Giraffenap.
B.Napping while lying down is not good.
C.You can be more creative after taking a nap.
D.If you feel sleepy during the work, it means you are lazy.
2.What does the underlined word “effective” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Active. B.Useful. C.Real. D.Wise.
3.What are the advantages of the sleeping box?
① It’s cheap.
② It takes little space.
③ It can make you sleep well soon.
④ It can improve your sleeping environment.
A.①②③ B.①②④ C.①③④ D.②③④
4.Why does the writer write this passage?
A.To compare two kinds of napping.
B.To introduce a new kind of sleeping box.
C.To advise customers to try the new product.
D.To show the advantages of the Giraffenap box.

New Glasses Can Transcribe (转录) Speech in Real Time
When Paul Shuttleworth bought himself a very expensive pair of eyeglasses for Christmas last year, it was a strange gift. The glasses didn’t improve his eyesight, weren’t particularly stylish and uncomfortably pressed down on his nose.
But the glasses are an important tool for him which have helped him talk and join in conversations in ways that he had never been able to before. These fantastic glasses automatically (自动地) transcribe the words someone is saying and show the text on his glasses.
Real-time captioning (为……配字幕) is not a totally new technology. People who are deaf or hard of hearing usually use apps such as Otter to transcribe a conversation as they’re having it. But having to ping-pong between the person they’re talking with and their phone can be uncomfortable and tiring. However, having captions in front of your eyes can change the situation.
Improvements in speech recognition software (语音识别软件) have really enabled these technological developments, says Dan Scarfe, CEO of XRAI Glass, a company that makes a speech-processing app that can be used with live-captioning glasses. “I believe in about six months we’ll have a new killer piece of hardware that you can surely use for this. Then it’s just a question of finding people who want to use it,” Dan says.
While live-captioning glasses could be an unbelievably powerful tool for millions of people, they are not a complete solution. For many people with hearing loss, understanding a friend in a crowded restaurant is a bad dream. Similarly, live-captioning software struggles to transcribe correct conversation in these spaces. Background noise remains a big problem that these glasses do not yet fully solve.
Many people who are deaf or hard of hearing are excited by this technology, but some see it as a danger to requests for sign language interpreters (手语翻译). Captions do not show a speaker’s identity, feelings or voice changes; interpreters can give all background information.

Nowadays the pollution of the sea is becoming an increasingly serious problem. How can we reduce the pollution in the sea and make the underwater environment better? Scientists in Norway have invented an underwater robot, which can help a lot.
The robot is 45 kg in weight and uses special cameras to get 3D pictures. It can discover different kinds of pollution at the bottom of the sea. It will help clean-up teams find the areas, where there is rubbish and then they can spend most of their time and money removing the most harmful materials.
The researchers (研究员) put their work to the test in a bay (海湾) in the city of Bergen. First, the robot swam up and down two meters above the seabed, collecting information. Then a computer turned the information into a map, which showed different rubbish materials in different colors. Thousands of objects were discovered in the bay, including bottles, metals, plastics, etc. “Bergen is a place where different industries come together, and the city is quite old, so there’s a huge amount of rubbish,” said Trygve Olav Fossum, one of the researchers. “We think the rubbish in the bay weighs 150 tons to 300 tons.” It is not always possible to remove everything. Some things are more harmful so it’s more important to clear them from the sea.
“Glass isn’t really polluting the sea,” said Fossum. “So if you know there’s an area with a lot of glass, you don’t need to worry much about that and you can pay more attention to the things that are putting heavy metals into the environment.” The maps will be used to help the clean-up teams locate (定位) the most harmful materials so that they can remove them first.
Thanks to the development of the science and technology, the underwater environment can be improved a lot. As well as helping to deal with pollution, the robot can also show where creatures like starfish are on the seabed.

Do you know who was described as “superhuman” by the great inventor and astronomer Galileo? It was Archimedes who solved the king’s problem of the golden crown while taking a bath. He was perhaps one of the most outstanding scientists in the world. He was a mathematician, physicist, engineer, weapon designer and inventor. He was wise in philosophy, active in mathematics and physics. He was also recognized as one of the finest engineers of his time. He was born on the island of Sicily in the city of Syracuse around the year 287 BC and died in 212 BC.
Archimedes showed great love for mathematics. He made many discoveries. For example, he determined the exact value of pi. He invented and developed methods similar to calculus (微积分) and used them to find the area of a circle and an accurate estimation (估计值) of the value of pi.
Today he is regarded as one of the greatest mathematicians in history. Archimedes used his mathematical skills and talents to create useful inventions. One of his most famous inventions is called the Archimedes’ Screw. It was a device that could lift water to higher levels. One of its first uses was to pump water out from a leaking ship. It is still used today in some places to move water from low places to high places. This invention influenced Leonardo da Vinci as he worked on developing the functioning flying machine.
Can you imagine counting the sand in the universe? Archimedes once tried to calculate the number of sand grains in the universe. Marconi, an Italian inventor, who gave us the radio, probably didn’t know how much his great invention would have done for the world in the years to come. Radio has perhaps done as much as any other communication tool. Things of the world can be reported to people everywhere a few seconds after they happened. Travelers in out-of-the-way places, ships at sea, and even astronauts round the earth are able to keep in touch with each other by radio.
Television is another important invention. It lets us see as well as hear the actor. Since it was invented, TV has done a great deal in the life of people everywhere. Many programs are now televised on TV.
Perhaps the most modern invention is “Telstar”, a “star” moving round the earth. It makes it possible for the people all over the world to be closer than ever before. Now on TV a family in Chicago can watch a car race in Italy, a table tennis competition in Beijing or a volleyball match in Japan as these events are actually happening!

Sleep like a Giraffe
What’s your favorite sleeping position? On your back? On your side? How about standing up? Unless you happen to be a giraffe, I’d never have thought anyone would choose the last one. But now thanks to a Japanese company, it could actually be a real competitor.
Giraffenap is invented to allow the user to take a rest while standing when he/she feels tired or sleepy with the purpose of improving performance at work. In an introduction to the nap (小睡) box, the company says that it will allow the user to be refreshed (恢复精神的).
But why does it have to be standing? The company explains that studies have shown that sleeping while standing allows people to reach a sleep state in which they breathe easily. When they wake up, they can feel the influence of a nap without having to sleep too much. And they can quickly return to work without feeling dizzy (头景目眩的). Also, making the box vertical (垂直的) rather than horizontal (水平的), means that it takes up half as much floor space. Now, I know what you’re thinking—wouldn’t a person just fall down if he tried to sleep while standing? Of course not.
Inside the box are four points to support the body—head, buttocks (臀), legs and feet. That means he can rest his arms. I hope you’ll try sleeping standing up—just like giraffes do.
Giraffenap has been made in two different styles—a futuristic (极其新潮的) one named “Spacia”, and a wood-covered one named “Forest”. They’re scheduled to be released towards the end of next year, so when that time comes, I guess you’ll just have to pick your favorite design, and slot yourself in ready for a good nap.
1.Giraffenap was designed with the purpose of ________.
A.taking naps when tired or sleepy B.improving work performance
C.feeling refreshed in just 20 minutes D.returning to work without feeling dizzy
2.Why does the company recommend (推荐) standing up to take a nap?
A.It takes up more floor space. B.It helps users fall asleep too much.
C.It’s difficult for users to breathe easily. D.It can help users feel refreshed in a short time.
3.What does the company say about the napping box?
A.It allows users to fall asleep easily. B.It saves floor space when not in use.
C.It provides four points of support for the head. D.It will be available for sale at the end of next year.
4.Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A.The box’s appearance. B.The box’s materials.
C.The box’s use of space D.The box’s sale date.
5.The underlined sentence “Now, I know what you’re thinking—wouldn’t a person just fall down if he tried to sleep while standing?” suggests that ________.
A.people would fall down if they tried to sleep standing up
B.the author doubts if it is necessary to stand up to take a nap

①Could you imagine being in a car driven by a computer, not a human? Recently, China has made a big step toward self-driving technology. Since August, driverless taxis can run on roads in Wuhan, Chongqing and Shenzhen.
②Why do we develop self-driving cars? Self-driving cars have many advantages. They use computers to sense the things around them and make better use of space. This means fewer crowded roads and better parking of cars. For disabled or blind people, self-driving cars can also help them get around more easily.
③According to US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each year, more than 1.35 million people are killed on roads around the world. Many more are hurt in accidents. Self driving cars could reduce road accidents by 90 percent and save governments a lot of money. The main cause of car accidents is human error (错误). By using computers, self-driving cars don’t make poor decisions or lose attention like humans do.
④But self-driving cars aren’t perfect. If something unexpected on the road happens, self-driving cars can’t react as fast as a human driver can. Also, during weather events like heavy snow, self-driving cars wouldn’t see the lines on the road easily. It might lead to an accident. The car’s computer system would be broken by someone, causing it to crash or change its direction.

“All right, are you ready? Okay, the camera’s rolling.” I really made my dream. I stood inside the empty school hallway and held the script On Patrol. “For this scene, ”I explained, “all I need you to do is to walk quietly. ”In front of the camera was my best friend, Gavin, wearing a blue uniform. This was certainly not a Hollywood blockbuster. I didn’t have a producer, a script director, or even something as simple as a light set up. The only tools I had was my camera and my tripod(三脚架), but they were enough. “Okay, are you good? ”I asked. Gavin nodded his head. “Okay. Action!” I said.
Since I was in kindergarten, movies have been my life. Some people may think back to their childhood as they hear the sound of table tennis or see a baseball flying into the blue sky during a backyard game. Some people may smell the salty air of the ocean during a family vacation. As for me, I hear the sound of the video recorder. The movie I watched most as a child was Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man. From then on, I watched as many movies as I could. When I began high school, I was wondering what I should choose as a job. After months of not having any idea of what I would become, an idea appeared: If I love movies so much, why not make it a career? I began to write my first short film, On Patrol, a ten-minute silent video about a hall monitor trying to stop someone from throwing rubbish at a school. After I finished my first script, I was very excited. Then I was thinking, "Now it is up to me to make my first movie."
It was not a famous movie, but it was my stepping-stone. Now looking back at On Patrol still gives me a dream that could direct more good movies. Cities around the world are racing to become “smart”. It’s just like a classroom full of hard-working students. Take Toronto, Canada, for example. Tech company Google has made public a 1,500-page plan. It is going to remake two neighborhoods with things like snow-melting roads.
To build smart cities, we need lots of new technologies, such as robots and artificial intelligence (AI). These technologies will lead to safer and more efficient (效率高的) cities. However, they will also raise questions about privacy.
But there is a more serious problem: Smart cities will be difficult to manage.
As we know, tech products are sometimes unreliable (不可靠的). The Internet and our computers break down regularly.
Tech products also age quickly. Only a few years into their lives, problems may become commoner and commoner.
In smart cities, many basic systems and services, such as water services, are based on such tech products. What if they break down regularly? Can you imagine the result?
New technologies in 2020 will be outdated before 2025. If we use smart technologies widely in cities, we will need to be prepared to replace them every few years. But who would want to pay this bill?
The most important problem is whether having a smart city will make us better at solving urban problems. Smart technologies can’t solve problems on their own. Suppose AI programs discover a road that needs to be repaired. It still requires people to show up with asphalt (沥青) and a steamroller (蒸汽压路机), doesn’t it?
As an engineer, I think smart technologies should have a place in cities. However, that place is not everywhere. For many of our urban problems, we don’t really need the latest technologies. The best of the old ideas works better.
1.The underlined word “students” refers to ________.
A.cities in Canada B.advanced technologies
C.cities around the world D.people living in the cities

A.The best of old ideas. B.Lots of new technologies.
C.Asphalt and steamrollers. D.The internet and computers.
4.According to the author, smart cities will be ________.
A.safe and convenient B.easier to manage
C.not as efficient as imagined D.harmful to the environment
5.The example of a road that needs to be repaired is used to show ________.
A.tech products break down regularly in smart cities
B.it is difficult and expensive to manage a smart city
C.many new technologies become outdated within five years
D.smart technologies can’t solve problems on their own

It might be strange to wear clothes made out of plastic bottles. But in fact, some clothing companies are already making clothes like these.
The fashion company of Alia Juma’s showed its newest collection at a workshop in Shanghai. Eighteen clothing kinds from the collection were made from recycled plastic bottles. “We realized that billions of water bottles are thrown into oceans every year and it would take hundreds of years to break down. We should use them to improve the environment,” said Alia Juma, the company’s designer. “Five bottles can make a shirt, 10 a dress, and 20 a short coat.”
Many other fashion companies are finding similar ways to save our planet these days. The process is rather simple. First, the plastic bottles are washed and cut into small pieces. Then they are melted(熔化) and shaped into small balls. Then the balls are melted again to form threads(线). People can then use the threads to make different kinds of clothes.
According to Juma, it takes 67, 000 bottles to originate 1 ton of threads. This cuts down carbon emissions(碳排放) by 4.2 tons and water use by 6.2 tons compared with the normal way of making threads.
Some people might have doubts about wearing something made out of plastic bottles. But in fact, clothes made from plastics can be even better than those made from common materials. The company OpenAI introduced ChatGPT to the world. It is the latest type of AI chatboxes. A chatbox is a computer program just like human conversation. Anyone can use ChatGPT for free now so that the company can collect people’s ideas on how to improve it.
People have tested how ChatGPT works. Reporters found out that it was able to write articles with rightful opinions for newspapers. Teachers asked it to write answers to exam questions. ChatGPT could almost get full marks. Even programmers, people who write computer code, tried out ChatGPT. It is able to solve difficult coding challenges and answer very quickly. It even wrote short poems to explain how the coding worked. In our daily life, it helped a father brainstorm ideas of a birthday party for his son that combines the kid’s two favorites, rabbits and basketball.
Moreover, when people ask ChatGPT questions, it can find mistakes. If it is asked what happened when Columbus arrived in America in 2023, older AIs might give a story. ChatGPT can recognize that Columbus reached America in the 1400s. It can also refuse to answer questions that are not proper. For example, ask it for advice on stealing a car. It will say that stealing a car is a serious crime and can have bad results. Instead, it gives advice such as “taking the bus”.
ChatGPT might help people solve problems, but the AI is trained using texts from the Internet. Often, the texts are used without being allowed by the writers of those texts. Some argue that technology doesn’t respect people’s work. Some argue that people will use the ChatGPT to copy others’ work and sell it as their own. In 2015, Elon Musk set up OpenAI, but left it in 2017. In 2022, he bought Twitter and then he pointed out that OpenAI could use the Twitter database for training in the past, but not for now. Some think this AI technology is bad for the earth, too. Training ChatGPT might make more than 284 tons of CO2 and lead to climate change that will heat up the earth.

1.Paul Shuttleworth bought a pair of expensive glasses to ______.
A.prove he was very rich B.make himself look handsome
C.improve his eyesight D.help himself in communication
2.According to the passage, Dan Scarfe ______.
A.takes pride in their company’s new product B.has got well trained in making speech recognition apps
C.thinks it possible for everyone to afford their products D.knows well how to help those with hearing problems
3.The 5th paragraph mainly tells us about ______.
A.where living-captioning glasses can be used B.who would love to buy living-captioning glasses
C.what challenge living-captioning glasses face D.how living-captioning glasses can work better
4.We can infer from the passage that ______.
A.live-captioning glasses are important tools for everyone
B.technologies cannot completely take the place of humans
C.interpreters can change the speaker’s feelings
D.the new glasses may be dangerous to users

In the past ten years, great progress has been made in technology. It seems like everything has been greatly improved. But there is one thing unlike them. It was invented over 100 years ago but remained unchanged until now. I’m talking about a blind walking stick.
The white stick has been used by many blind people for a long time. However, it hasn’t really been improved, until a blind engineer named Kursat decided to do something to change that. He hoped his invention would help the blind.
He invented a smart stick called the WeWalk. The smart stick uses built-in speakers and different sensors (传感器) to warn about possible dangers. It helps blind people in navigating (导航) around their environment. It makes their travel much easier. The stick is priced at around $500. It is less than half the price of most smart phones. Most people can afford it. This invention is going to change life a lot for the blind.
Kursat well understands the difficulties that the blind face. That’s because he is blind himself. He decided to put his knowledge of technology into inventing something. It would not only change his life, but also the life of many others.
“In these days, we are talking about flying cars. But the blind have been using just a simple stick. As a blind person, when I am at the bus stop, I don’t know which bus is coming or which stores are around me. Now that kind of information can be provided by the WeWalk,” he said, “I believe life of the blind will be much easier and safer.”

C.Because he is blind, too. D.Because he faces the blind.
3.Which of the following is Kursat’s idea?
A.The WeWalk can solve all the problems for the blind.
B.With the WeWalk, the blind can find their way more easily.
C.The blind shouldn’t take the bus.
D.Flying cars are more important than the WeWalk.
4.We can know from the passage that Kursat is ________.
A.rich and outgoing B.creative and caring
C.smart and thankful D.healthy and lucky
5.Where may this text be taken from?
A.A report about health. B.A story about cars.
C.A book about teaching. D.A magazine about science.

The paper we know today did not appear until two thousand years ago. It was created in China. No one knows who first invented it. But history does tell us about one man who improved the process and this man was Cai Lun (62-121), who was born during the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220).
Cai Lun often paid visits to the countryside workshops when he took office as Shang-fang Ling an officer in control of making instruments and weapons. Inspired by women who raised silkworms (蚕), he used many materials to make paper, such as bark (树皮), pieces of net normally used to catch fish, and pieces of used cloth. He broke these materials down into very small pieces and finally produced a kind of paper.

Have you ever got your lunch, but not known where to sit? You don’t want to sit alone. But you are not sure who would be friendly and let you sit with them.
To solve the problem, Natalic Hampton, made an app called Sit With Us. It makes finding friends in the school canteen (食堂) very easy. Natalie is from Sherman Oaks, California, US.
Students can sign up as “ambassadors (大使)” for a club. Then they can post “open lunch” events to invite others to join in.
Natalie got the idea to create the app after she ate alone her whole seventh grade year. The experience made her feel sad and she was even bullied (欺负). She changed schools because of that.
People may want to know why you don’t just ask to sit down. Natalie said the app stops kids from being rejected in front of others. “This way is very private. It’s through the phone. No one else has to know. And you know that you’re not going to be rejected once you get to the table,” she told NPR.

We are often told to pay attention to what our mothers tell us. Most of us enjoy listening to our mothers speak. Scientists have found that compared to other people’s voices, our brains greatly prefer the voices of our own mothers.
Scientists from Stanford University, US, scanned (扫描) children’s brains while they were listening to different sounds, including their mothers’ voices. They found that 97 percent of the time, children could recognize (认出) their mothers’ voices at once.
Hearing their mothers’ voices makes children’s brains more active. We usually just use one part of our brain to deal with sounds when we hear something. But when we hear our mothers’ voices, many parts of the brain, including those that are responsible for reward (奖赏) and emotion (情感), start to work as well.
____▲___ It starts even before we’re born. When children are still in the womb (子宫) or have just been born, they hear their mothers talking. This makes babies feel comfortable and teaches them language and social skills, even though they are still very young. The babies learn to recognize their mothers’ voices as a rewarding sound. Later, when this sound is heard again, more attention is paid to it.

Watching my first movie not only gives me a laugh, but also gives me the encouragement to continue running after a love I have had since I put Spider-Man into my video recorder many years ago.

Plastic threads can also be made into different materials, such as cotton, silk, or even wool. It seems that this innovation(创新) may lead to a greener future of fashion.
