Mr Paul was a professor of medicine, who was very strict with the students. Whenever he took the chair on the exam committee, the students would be in fear, because he was seldom pleased with the answers they gave. A student would be lucky enough if he or she could receive a good mark from him. At the end of the term, the students of medicine would take their exam again. Now a student entered the exam room and got seated before the committee. This student was a little nervous as he knew it would not be so easy to get through the exam at all.
Mr Paul began to ask. The student was required to describe a certain illness, his description of which turned to be OK.
Then Mr Paul asked about the cure (药物) for the illness and the student, too, answered just as right. "Good”, said the professor, "and how much will you give the patient?"
"A full spoon”,answered the student.
"Now you may go out and wait for what you can get," said Mr Paul. At the same time, the committee discussed carefully the answers the student had given. Suddenly the student noticed that there was something wrong with his last answer. "A full spoon is too much," he thought to himself. Anxiously he opened the door of the room and cried, "Mr Professor,I've made a mistake!A full spoon is too much for a patient. He can take only five drops."
"I'm sorry, sir," said Mr Paul coldly, "but it's too late. Your patient has died.”

More than two thirds of the world's polar bears will be wiped out by 2050,according to a shocking new study. By then, scientists say, global warming will have melted 42 percent of the Arctic sea ice. By 2100,only a very few of these important creatures will be left.
The report has been produced by the US Geological Survey. The scientists have publicized their findings in the hope of influencing US Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne, who has been asked to put polar bears on the US endangered species list.
Polar bears depend on floating sea ice as a platform for hunting seals, which are their main food. Without enough ice, polar bears would be forced to go onto the land, where they are poorly skilled hunters, and would be unlikely to adapt to the life on the land in time. Experts say few little bears would survive and the stress could make many females unable to get pregnant(怀孕的).
The team of American and Canadian scientists spent six months studying bears,on the ground, from spotter planes and in the lab, using computer models.
Some team members fear the result is even worse for the bears than what their report says. They say the Arctic is warming faster than anywhere in the world and much faster than their computer had been forecasting. Satellite observations have showed that the ice has decreased to an all-time low.
However, not everyone in the scientific community believes that global warming is happening on such an alarming scale. Another investigation has found that polar bears are still being hunted by wealthy “sportsmen” who want their skins and heads. At least ten international companies offer bear-hunting trips.
28.What do we know about Dirk Kempthorne according to the passage?
A.He is an animal scientist.
B.He is a protector of animals working for the US government.
C.He was asked to put polar bears on the US endangered species list.
D.He offered to put polar bears on the endangered species list.
29.Why will polar bears die out if there is not enough sea ice?
A.Because polar bears can't catch enough food without ice.
B.Because polar bears eat ice when they feel thirsty.
C.Because polar bears will be easily found by hunters without ice.
D.Because most female bears are used to giving birth under ice.
30.After a six-month study,some scientists fear that ________.
A.there is something wrong with their computers
B.polar bears will disappear even faster than they ever expected
C.their computer models are not as accurate as they expected
D.global warming will destroy everything in the Arctic
31.What is this passage mainly about?
A.Global warming makes the whole world different.
B.Human beings are responsible for the endangered species.
C.Most of the polar bears will have been wiped out by the end of this century.
D.Scientists have founded that most animals in the Arctic will die out by 2100.
D
Over the years, many scientists have attempted to explain why spending time in green spaces can reduce feelings of stress and anxiety, from their supposed ability to clean the air to their mysterious effects on our brains.
The most common saying I tend to hear is that plants, particularly houseplants, clean the air. The latest research now suggests that in indoor spaces you would need a lot of them before you see any noticeable benefit. How many? Well, several hundred per square meter of living space to achieve the same benefit of simply opening a window.
What we do know, however, is that there is something unusual about the color green that seems to affect how our brains function. Researchers investigating the effect of exercise on psychological well-being have found that seeing views of the natural world on screens had additional benefits over and above the workout alone. However, when they changed the screens to show the same views in black and white or in shades of red, the effect was markedly reduced compared to the original green. This may mean that having evergreen species in your garden or even something as simple as painting your fence green might contribute to its effect.
Similarly, designing your garden to require higher maintenance (维护) so that it is not simply somewhere to sunbathe in summer may improve the beneficial effect by encouraging gentle workouts. Low-impact(低冲击力), prolonged(延长的)exercise, such as gardening, can burn more calories (卡路里) than a hard-hitting gym session, despite feeling easier. It is a way of being active that may appeal to far more people.
Gardening is also a classic form of practicing mindfulness, which can help to focus our thoughts on the here and now, distracting us from any worries or stresses. Mindfulness exercises are well-documented to have a positive impact on psychological well-being. So act now, embrace (接受) the power of greenery and turn your garden into a welcoming space.
32.Which factor determines houseplants’ effect on cleaning the air?
A.Their quantity(数量). B.Their colors.
C.Their varieties. D.Their placement(布置).
33.What is a benefit of seeing the color green during exercise?
A.Promoting sports technique. B.Burning more calories.
C.Increasing intelligence level. D.Improving mental health.
34.What contributes to the popularity of gardening?
A.It is accessible and effective. B.It is affordable and appealing.
C.It requires higher maintenance. D.It offers a connection with nature.
35.Why is gardening a form of mindfulness?
A.It helps develop a sense of success. B.It frees us from our daily matters.
C.It directs our attention to the present. D.It encourages learning and creativity.

36 I cannot stress how important it is to pay attention to what your teacher is teaching you.Take part in class discussions if you have something worth adding. Pay attention during class,in particular during lectures.
Taking notes is important. You don’t need to write down every single word your teacher says but write down what he or she writes on the board,or any special fact you think you might need for a test. 37 In this way,it will help you learn more effectively by actually thinking about what you are writing.

Saturday Sep.7 Sunny
Now,my high school life has been on for a week.High school life gave me the feeling that there was very much free time. Many need ourselves to make use of the free time to arrange them.
Firstly,I make a plan every day,and follow it strictly. Before going to bed at night,I will check whether I have finished it. If not,I’ll give myself a little punishment, such as playing less computer games on the weekend. Secondly,I’ll prepare the second day course after finishing my homework.
In a word,I will often summarize my learning to find problems a period later. And if I do it well,I will reward myself.
I think I will adapt myself to the high school life as soon as possible.

M: I don’t know. I can’t stand wearing it. It’s not pleasant to look at for me.
W: Oh, come on. And it’s a bargain for today.
M: Hey, look at that jacket. Doesn’t it remind you of the Beatles? Come on. Why don’t you try it on?
W: A Nehru jacket? You’ve got to be kidding.

M: Look at this, Amy. The baby girl was buried under a fallen building for a day and a night before she was saved in the end. It was said that the mother’s hands were still in a lift position when she died.
W: A mother’s love is always selfless. I don’t like to see this kind of news which makes me want to cry.
M: And this one and old lady was cheated fifty thousand dollars by a young man.
W: Why do some people do such things? I really hate them.

W: What a picture! Is it taken from the gallery?
M: Well, I got it from the news online. It’s painted by a dog named Dogcasso.
W: Unbelievable! How can a dog paint like that?
M: An animal activist named Steven rescued the homeless dog and taught her to paint.
W: Wow, I have to say I have never seen more talented ones.
M: Yeah, that’s why Steven named her after the famous Spanish painter Pablo Picasso in 2015. In 2017, a businessman from London bought a painting for about $650.And Dogcasso’s fame spread quickly after that. She held an art show in America in 2019.It was the first show ever by a non-human artist.

M: Jessie, long time no see. Where have you been recently?
W: I was in a town near Boston for three months and I’ve just come back. I was helping in a research program.
M: How nice! Did you enjoy your stay there?
W: Yes. I like to work there. I mean, the people I worked with are very friendly and helpful. And I’m going back in March.
M: Did you go sightseeing there?
W: No. We were very busy. We are planning to finish the rest before Christmas. But I took part in quite a few parties with my friends, and I will never forget the big meal on Thanksgiving Day and the fun we had on Boxing Day.
M: What day? I’ve never heard of it.
W: It is a day following Christmas Day.
M: You certainly learned a lot from there.

M: Don’t forget to get ready for the Christmas festival! Everyone is invited to attend, and your friends and family are welcome, too. We will need some members to help prepare for our yearly event. Please sign up on the sheet of paper by the door if you can help with anything. The list of things to be done includes: buying food, cooking the dinner, making decorations, and cleaning up after the party. We could use at least five people for each of these activities. Also, please give as much money for the festival as you can, so we can buy all the things we need to make this a great event. If every member here today gives twenty dollars, we should have enough. Remember that the money for the Christmas festival does not come out of our normal membership fees. One more thing, each adult who comes to the party must bring a separate gift for a child. This year, as usual, we will be giving the presents to children who have no parents. If you need ideas, just ask Mark at the back of the room.
