A newspaper advertisement B How do you get school pupils interested in poetry? It is hard. Glasgow-based performance poet Imogen Stirling has been on that mission in rural south-west Scotland over the past year. She admitted there had been an element of trick in her work — “I’ve learned that you just can never use the word ‘poetry’ because that puts people off immediately,” she said. “To be honest, I had no interest in poetry when I was in school and I didn’t really resonate (引起共鸣) with the way that it was taught to me at all. So it did take me quite a long time from having sort of dipped into poetry at school to coming back to it because I really just didn’t think it was for me.” However, there are ways to get it across. “I think it’s more about bringing out the performative elements and the storytelling elements,” she said. “We’re really fortunate in that there are so many artists who are blending (融合) poetry and raps, which is a much more accessible art form, I think.” School visits are one part of her work in the region. “We come together once a month, to work together and help develop their skills as writers.” she said. “It is as much about skill development as it is about socializing with other writers and also locking on to see what a career in writing could look like.” Ms, Stirling said poetry was more than producing work to end up in “some dusty books on a shelf”. Her own journey into performance poetry has been an indirect one after studying theater and literature. “I’d worked abroad as a musician for a couple of years, then came back to Glasgow and found that this really rich performance poetry scene existed, which had never been there to my knowledge when I’d been here studying.” she said. “I fell into that and frequented (常去) a lot of open mic nights.” Who knows, in the future, maybe some of her current students will be inspired to follow in her footsteps. 4. What did Ms Stirling think when at school? A. She would become a poet in the future. B. She hadn’t been taught poem skills. C. She was honest and was often tricked. D. She wasn’t eager to learn poetry. 5. How does Ms Stirling probably teach students to learn poetry? A. By letting them act out poems. B. By explaining the details of a poem. C. By blending poetry and raps. D. By inviting artists to talk about art. 6. What skills will students focus on during Ms Stirling’s visits? A. The judgement of a career in writing. B. The need to read dusty books on the shelf. C. The ability to communicate with writers. D. The skills of writing poems. 7. What attracted Ms Stirling back to Glasgow? A. The colorful night life. B. The familiar local cnvironment. C. The performance poetry scene. D. The performance chance as a musician. C In sub-Saharan Africa, most children attend schools where lessons are not taught in their mother tongue, but a language that is more international. Some believe this system prepares kids for a successful future. Others say that teaching in an unfamiliar language can obviously hamper learning results. Senegal is an example of an African nation where students learn to read — not in a language they speak at home, but in French. Forcing children to learn in French could not actually be having a positive effect on their school performance. According to Education Center, the youth’s ability to read and write is lower than the average (平均水平) for countries with similar economies. In addition, more than half of Senegal’s secondary school-age children no longer attend school. Such worries have led schools in some countries to begin teaching in local languages. But not everyone agrees with the so efforts. Barbara Trudell, the director of an organization for language development, says that preferring local languages can be difficult to understand. That’s because there might be more opportunities for speakers of international languages. Others have mixed feelings. Meissa Dieng, a school headmaster accepts the importance of international languages. But he’s concerned about how well children adapt to the challenges of doing schoolwork in a language they do not speak at home. Chris Darby, an education expert says that parents often have strong views on teaching in international languages. But many of them finally support it. “Parents are very eager, I think, for children to succeed,” said Darby. Many Organizations have been testing two-language teaching programs in primary schools. In these programs, children learn to speak French and build learning skills in local language. The local language is later used as a base to learn and read in French. Program Director Awa Ka Dia hopes the good results will encourage the native governments to fund the programs, so they could cover more areas. 8. What does the underlined word “hamper” mean in paragraph 1? A. Harm. B. Improve. C. Achieve. D. Confuse. 9. What might be the main reason for the students’ giving up going to school in Senegal? A. Inabilities to learn in French. B. Too much stress from parents. C. Unwillingness to read and write. D. Starting schooling too late. 10. What is Barbara Trudell’s attitude to teaching in international languages? A Unsupportive. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear. 11. What can be concluded from the last paragraph? A. Pupils find it difficult to learn French. B. French helps to improve learning skills. C. The programs are considered hopeful. D. Local governments organize the programs. D Dogs have been humans’ best friends for thousands of years, and their ability to understand us goes more than just following orders. Dogs are really good at understanding how humans feel. They’ve learned to pick up on words and facial expressions from humans. A recent study has shown that dogs can actually smell human stress and respond (回应) to it in ways that suggest a close relationship with us humans. This interesting discovery throws light on how deeply close our lives have become with our dog friends. So, can dogs really smell stress? The answer is yes! Researchers at the University of Bristol did a study where they found that dogs can sense stress through a chemical called cortisol (皮质醇) in our sweat (汗). This ability allows them to respond emotionally to human stress. In the study, 18 dogs and their owners took part, along with 11 volunteers who didn’t know the dogs. These volunteers went through public speaking and took tests of solving difficult math problems without any preparation. Their worry made more cortisol appear in their sweat. When the dogs smelled this stressed sweat. they felt less curious and showed less interest in a food bowl in an uncertain position, as if they thought there was no food in those bowls. It seems that dogs can really feel the stress of humans and their own moods can be affected, too. This shows that humans and dogs have a very deep connection, where emotions can spread between us like a wave. Then how did dogs develop such ability to sense stress? Well, it might be because sensing stress helped dogs survive in the past. If they could tell when another member of their group was worried and stressed, they knew they might be at risk. As Zoe Parr-Cortes, lead study author and a Ph. D. student at Bristol Veterinary School, said, “Being able to sense stress from another member of the pack was likely beneficial.” 12. What does the recent study tell us about dogs? A. Their long history of development. B. Their various roles in human history. C. Their ability to learn human language. D. Their deeper connection with humans. 13. What did the volunteers need to do in the study? A. Calm dogs down. B. Test their own ability. C. Experience stress. D. Collect their own sweat. 14. Why might dogs have developed the ability to sense stress? A. To help them hunt for more food. B. To warn them of possible dangers. C. To guide them to respond to human orders. D. To allow them to connect with their group. 15. What can be the best title for the text? A. Dogs’ Unbelievable Ability to Sense Human Stress B. The Development of the Human- Dog Relationship C. Humans Sense Stress Through Their Beloved Dogs D. Dogs’ Stress Having an Influence on Human Behavior 第二节 七选五(共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Become a Morning Person Everyone knows that early to bed and early to rise is good for health. ___16___ Here are some ways you can focus on that can help you become a better morning person. Shift your bedtime. ___17___ Most people should aim for at least seven hours a night — so you’ll probably need to inch your bedtime forward as you transition (过渡) to a new schedule. You could fall straight into getting up at your desired time every day, knowing that you’ll feel tired during the transition but will naturally start falling asleep earlier within a few weeks. Relax before bed. Don’t watch TV or fiddle around (摆弄) with laptops right before you go to bed because they are shining light into your eyes and maybe even tricking your brain into thinking that it’s earlier than it really is. ___18___ Try not to do anything too stimulating before bed, and instead focus on relaxing activities like taking a bath or listening to comfortable music. ___19___ The secret to becoming a morning person is exposure to bright light. That’s because light suppresses (抑制) melatonin, a hormone (激素) that plays an important role in circadian (昼夜) rhythm. Natural light is the best, so get outside or open your bedroom window. Make mornings more pleasant. Try to schedule something to look forward to in the morning so that getting up feels like less hard. Perhaps a hot cup of coffee, sipped in silence, and the daily crossword puzzle. ___20___ A. Lighten up. B. Work up a sweat. C. It’s important to make sure you’re getting enough sleep. D. But many people have great difficulty in getting up early. E. It’s hard to stop surfing the internet late at night if you’re a night owl. F. Make sure the light around you is not too bright when it’s close to your bedtime. 【答案】4. D 5. A 6. D 7. C 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲述了格拉斯哥的表演诗人Imogen Stirling如何在农村地区引导学生对诗歌产生兴趣的经历。 【4题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第二段“To be honest, I had no interest in poetry when I was in school and I didn’t really resonate (引起共鸣) with the way that it was taught to me at all. A. Unsupportive. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear. 11. What can be concluded from the last paragraph? A. Pupils find it difficult to learn French. B. French helps to improve learning skills. C. The programs are considered hopeful. D. Local governments organize the programs. 【答案】8. A 9. A 10. B 11. C 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了在撒哈拉以南非洲,大多数儿童上学的学校不是用母语授课,而是用更国际化的语言授课,对此人们有不同的看法。 【8题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“Some believe this system prepares kids for a successful future. Others say that teaching in an unfamiliar language can obviously…(一些人认为,这种制度为孩子们的成功未来做好了准备。另一些人说,用不熟悉的语言教学显然可能……)”可知,上文提到一些人认为,这种制度为孩子们的成功未来做好了准备,即支持这种制度,而另一些人说,用不熟悉的语言教学显然会危害学习效果,即反对这种制度。故划线词意思是“危害”,故选A。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“Senegal is an example of an African nation where students learn to read — not in a language they speak at home, but in French. Forcing children to learn in French could not actually be having a positive effect on their school performance.(塞内加尔是非洲国家的一个例子,那里的学生学习阅读的语言不是他们在家里说的语言,而是法语。强迫孩子学习法语实际上对他们的学习成绩并没有积极的影响)”可知,塞内加尔学生退学的主要原因是不能用法语学习。故选A。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“Barbara Trudell, the director of an organization for language development, says that preferring local languages can be difficult to understand. That’s because there might be more opportunities for speakers of international languages.(语言发展组织的负责人芭芭拉·特鲁德尔说,偏爱当地语言可能很难理解。这是因为说国际语言的人可能会有更多的机会)”可知,芭芭拉·特鲁德尔支持国际语言教学。故选B。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“In these programs, children learn to speak French and build learning skills in local language. The local language is later used as a base to learn and read in French. Program Director Awa Ka Dia hopes the good results will encourage the native governments to fund the programs, so they could cover more areas.(在这些项目中,孩子们学习说法语,并建立当地语言的学习技能。当地语言后来被用作学习和阅读法语的基础。项目负责人阿瓦卡迪亚希望良好的结果会鼓励当地政府资助这些项目,这样它们就可以覆盖更多的地区)”可知,这些项目被认为很有前途。故选C。 D Dogs have been humans’ best friends for thousands of years, and their ability to understand us goes more than just following orders. Dogs’ Stress Having an Influence on Human Behavior 【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15.
