Huang Gongwang was a famous Chinese artist in the Yuan Dynasty. He was good at music, poetry, writing and especially painting.
Huang was born in 1269 in Jiangsu Province of China. He lost his parents at a very young age and grew up poor until a man from Zhejiang Province adopted him. The kind man was impressed by the boy’s talent. Later Huang began to learn painting under the guidance of Zhao Mengfu.
Between the ages of 50 and 62, Huang often travelled in nature. During the long-term travelling, he developed an interest in rivers and mountains. Waves of innovation often create giants. Artificial intelligence (AI) may well be the next big technological shift, transforming the way of businesses. Firms selling the software and hardware that support AI will gain a lot of profit. But none is better positioned than Nvidia, an American firm that makes specialist AI chips. Its market value briefly passed $1,000 billion this week. Will Nvidia always be a tech-giant in this field?
The hype (炒作) around AI makes the question hard to answer. Excitement about Nvidia began to mount in November, after the release of ChatGPT, an AI-powered chatbot. Since then many kinds of firms have launched AI products.
Nvidia is in an enviable (令人羡慕的) position. Its core business is designing high-performance chips. At first it sold these to video-game lovers. The chips were also highly efficient at training AI models, and a new, booming market emerged.
Nvidia also had the forethought to invest in two areas that helped strengthen its dominance One is advanced networking. Because training AI models requires vast amounts of processing power, many chips — sometimes thousands — are used at the same time. These chips exchange data along a high-performance, AI-tailored network.
Nvidia’s other strength is its software. CUDA, its AI platform, is popular with programmers and runs only on the company’s chips. For instance, by giving free access to its chips and software to some AI researchers, the firm focused on encouraging developers to use its software long before its competitors set out to woo them.
Despite all these advantages, however, Nvidia’s lasting dominance is not assured. New companies and big chipmakers want a share of Nvidia’s network and chip businesses. The biggest challenge, though, may come from Nvidia’s own customers. The cloud-computing arms of both Amazon and Alphabet are designing their own AI-tailored chips. Both have the potential to become fearsome competitors.
8. Which of the following makes Nvidia enviable according to the passage?
A. The hype around artificial intelligence. B. The release of ChatGPT.
C. The availability of its chips. D. The high performance of its chips.
9. What does the underlined word “woo” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Hunt for. B. Attend to. C. Approve of. D. Guard against.
10. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Nvidia will lose its dominance definitely. B. Nvidia should further improve its chips.
C. Alphabet has weakened Nvidia’s market. D. Amazon will defeat Nvidia soon.
11. What does the author think of Nvidia’s dominance in the future?
A. Unchallengeable. B. Uncertain. C. Predictable. D. Assured.
D 9. A 10. B 11. B
根据第一段“But none is better positioned than Nvidia, an American firm that makes specialist AI chips.(但没有哪家公司比生产专业人工智能芯片的美国公司英伟达更有优势)”以及第三段“Nvidia is in an enviable (令人羡慕的) position.(英伟达处于一个令人羡慕的位置)”可知,芯片的高性能让英伟达令人羡慕。
根据划线词上文“by giving free access to its chips and software to some AI researchers, the firm focused on encouraging developers to use its software long before its competitors set out to(通过向一些人工智能研究人员免费提供其芯片和软件,该公司专注于鼓励开发人员使用其软件,早在竞争对手开始之前……)” 故选A。
根据最后一段“The biggest challenge, though, may come from Nvidia’s own customers. The cloud-computing arms of both Amazon and Alphabet are designing their own AI-tailored chips. Both have the potential to become fearsome competitors.(不过,最大的挑战可能来自英伟达自己的客户。亚马逊和Alphabet的云计算部门都在设计自己的人工智能定制芯片。两者都有可能成为令人生畏的竞争对手)”可知,英伟达应该进一步改进它的芯片。故选B。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Despite all these advantages, however, Nvidia’s lasting dominance is not assured.(然而,尽管有这些优势,英伟达的长期统治地位仍不确定)”可知,英伟达在未来的主导地位是不确定的。故选B。
D
“Tie an Italian’s hands behind his back,” runs an old joke, “and he’ll be speechless.” This rests on a national stereotype: Italians are talkative and emotional, and all that arm-waggling supposedly goes to prove it.
Susan Meadow of the University of Chicago has a rather different view. Emotions come out in lots of ways: facial expressions, posture, tone of voice and so on. But people are doing something different when they use gestures with speech, which she sums up in the title of her new book, “Thinking with Your Hands”. It is a masterly tour through a lifetime’s research.
Virtually everyone gestures, not just Italians. Experimental subjects, told after a research session that they were being watched for gestures, apologize for not having made any — but were doing so the entire time. People born blind gesture when they speak, including to each other. A woman born without arms but with “phantom limb syndrome (幻肢综合征)” describes how she uses her phantom arms when she talks — but not when she walks. All this suggests that cognition (认知) is, to some extent, “embodied”; thinking is not all done in your head.
In fact, gestures that accompany speech are a second channel of information. Subjects watch a film in which a cat runs but are told to lie and say it jumped. They do so in words — while their hands make a running motion. People who say they believe in sexual equality but gesture with their hands lower when talking about women are not indicating women’s height; they can be shown to have biases (偏见) of which they may be unaware.
In “The Crown”, a historical drama series, Lady Diana is warned that her hands may betray her real emotions, which could be dangerous; they are tied together so she can learn to speak without gesticulating. No one who reads Susan’s book could ever again think that gesturing shows only a lack of control. It is about thinking and communication, and is a complex aid to both.
12. Why does the author mention the old joke in Paragraph 1?
A. To present an argument. B. To describe a scene.
C. To lead in the topic. D. To clarify a doubt.
13. Which statement will Susan Meadow probably agree with?
A. The disabled seldom use gestures. B. Gestures literally embody cognition.
C. Thinking only occurs in the brain. D. Gestures are improper in communication.
14. What does the author try to prove in the last two paragraphs?
A. Gestures may express what the speaker really thinks.
B. People are unaware of the meanings of their gestures.
C. Gesturing during speech shows only a lack of control.
D. Speakers can lie more easily with the help of gestures.
15. Which of the following is the best summary of the text?
A. Speech is a direct channel of information.
B. Gestures make a vital form of communication.
C. Italian’s body language represents a national stereotype.
D. “Thinking with Your Hands” is a lifetime’s research for Susan Meadow.
C 13. B 14. A 15. B
根据第一段中“‘Tie an Italian’s hands behind his back,’ runs an old joke, ‘and he’ll be speechless.’ This rests on a national stereotype: Italians are talkative and emotional, and all that arm-waggling supposedly goes to prove it.(“把意大利人的手绑在背后,”一个老笑话说道,“他就会说不出话来。”这是基于一种国家刻板印象:意大利人健谈且情绪化,所有那些挥舞手臂的动作据说都证明了这一点)”可知,作者在第一段提到这个老笑话是为了引出关于意大利人手势丰富、健谈且情绪化的刻板印象,进而引出下文对于手势在交流和思考中作用的探讨。因此,作者提到这个老笑话是为了引入话题。故选C项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“Susan Meadow of the University of Chicago has a rather different view. Emotions come out in lots of ways: facial expressions, posture, tone of voice and so on. But people are doing something different when they use gestures with speech, which she sums up in the title of her new book, “Thinking with Your Hands”.(芝加哥大学的Susan Meadow有不同的看法,情绪以多种方式表现出来:面部表情、姿势、语调等等。
根据倒数第二段中“In fact, gestures that accompany speech are a second channel of information.(事实上,伴随言语的手势是信息的第二渠道)”和“People who say they believe in sexual equality but gesture with their hands lower when talking about women are not indicating women’s height; they can be shown to have biases (偏见) of which they may be unaware.(那些说他们相信性别平等但在谈论女性时手势较低的人,其实并不是在指示女性的身高;这表明他们可能有自己未曾意识到的偏见)”;最后一段中“In ‘The Crown’, a historical drama series, Lady Diana is warned that her hands may betray her real emotions, which could be dangerous; they are tied together so she can learn to speak without gesticulating.(在历史剧《王冠》中,戴安娜王妃被警告说,她的手可能会泄露她的真实情感,这可能是危险的;它们被绑在一起,这样她就可以学习不用手势说话了)”可知,作者通过举例说明了手势能够真实反映人们的想法和偏见,即使人们口头上说的和内心想的不一致。 故选A项。
通读全文可知,尤其结合第四段中“In fact, gestures that accompany speech are a second channel of information.(事实上,伴随言语的手势是信息的第二渠道)”和最后一段中“No one who reads Susan’s book could ever again think that gesturing shows only a lack of control. It is about thinking and communication, and is a complex aid to both.(读过苏珊这本书的人再也不会认为手势只是缺乏控制的表现。

“You should go for it,” Artie said, giving my shoulder a squeeze as we stood gazing at the poster. ‘Cinderella — auditions (试镜) this Thursday after school,’ the words proclaimed.
“Me?” My voice came out as a frightened squeak. “Come on, Amy. You probably know the entire play off by heart. You are the best person for Cinderella.” he encouraged. I knew he was joking, but the truth was, I could tell you every single line (台词) in the play.
When we reached the hall on Thursday, I began to wish I hadn’t signed up to be Cinderella. It was easier to feel hopeful several days ago when my name was the only one on the sign-up sheet. Since then, seven other girls have added their own names to the list, including Sherry Anderson, the head cheerleader
Luckily, we were given a moment to practice before the auditions began. “Good,” Mr Cordoza said approvingly as he stopped by and listened to my practice. I felt a glimmer of hope. “Now let’s see how you get on performing on the stage in front of everyone.” He clapped his hands for attention, signaling the start of the auditions.
Sherry Anderson was up first. She showed great confidence as she tossed her long blonde hair and recited her lines. Although she lacked an understanding of the lines, her performance was attractive.
Then it was my turn. As I climbed the stairs to the stage, I tripped, nearly falling flat on my face. I felt my cheeks burning.
“When you’re ready,” Mr Cordoza said, sounding impatient.
“Sorry,” I mumbled. I tried to calm my breathing, but the nerves tightened in my throat. “I...I…” I stuttered. ‘Speak up Amy, can’t hear you!’ jeers and whistles came from the back of the hall. I could feel that my performance was a disaster. Even Sherry’s lines were better than mine. Finally, I limped to the end of the scene, and as soon as it was over, I rushed off the stage, feeling defeated.
As I made my way through the hallway, I spotted Artie waiting for me.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
He told me that Sherry got the role of Cinderella but I would be the understudy (替角).

On the day of the performance, Sherry got sick and couldn’t come.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
He told me that Sherry got the role of Cinderella but I would be the understudy (替角). At the news, I sighed and forced a smile. Sensing my disappointment, Artie put his hand on my shoulder and encouraged, “Seize the chance and you can shine too. Believe in yourself!” His words giving me a burst of confidence, I nodded admittedly, determined to be the best understudy. In the following days, I spent hours every day rehearsing my lines, perfecting my expressions and practicing each act. Gradually, I grew more confident and was fully prepared for the possibility of stepping onto the stage if needed.
On the day of the performance, Sherry got sick and couldn’t come. Panic filled the air backstage. Calm outside but nervous inside, I took a deep breath and stepped forward. All those days of hard work and preparation had led to this moment. As the curtains rose, I walked onto the stage with a newfound courage. The lights shone on me, and I delivered my lines with full of passion and confidence. With the music fading away, the audience broke into thunderous applause. At that very moment, I knew I fulfilled my mission as an understudy. That day, I became the star of the show, proving to myself and everyone that chances are for those who are prepared.

D. Assured.

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
