The meaning of the word “volunteer ” may be a little different in different countries, but it usually means “one who offers his or her services.” There are many different ways in which people can volunteer, such as taking care of sick people, working in homes for homeless children, and picking up garbage(垃圾) from beaches and parks. Volunteers may work within their own countries or in other countries. They are often people with a strong wish to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. Volunteers don’t expect any kind of pay.
At the root of volunteering is the idea that one person may have the ability to offer services that can help other people. Tracy, a good friend of mine, however, recently came back from India with a ___36___ of what being a volunteer means. She worked for two and a half weeks in one of Mother Teresa’s homes in Calcutta. The following is her story.
“I first heard about Mother Teresa in my high school, we watched a video(录像) about her work in India and all over the world. I was so moved by her spirit to help others and her endless love for every human being that after I graduated from high school, I too wanted to try her kind of work. So with two friends I flew to Calcutta for a few weeks.”
“I was asked to work in a home for sick people. I helped wash clothes and sheets, and pass out lunch. I also fed the people who were too weak to feed themselves and tried to cheer the up. I felt it was better to share with them than to think that I have helped them. To be honest, I don’t think I was helping very much. It was then that I realized that I had not really come to help, but to learn about and experience another culture(文化) that helped improve my own understanding of life and the world.”
36. According to the text, a volunteer refers to a person who ______.
A. is willing to help those in need without pay B. can afford to travel to different places
C. has a strong wish to be successful D. has made a big fortune in life
37. Tracy started her work as a volunteer _______.
A. after she met Mother Teresa
B. after she finished high school
C. when she was touring Calcutta
D. when she was working in a hospital
38. Why did Tracy choose to be a volunteer?
A. She liked to work with Mother Teresa.
B. She had already had some experience.
C. She was asked by Mother Teresa’s example.
D. She wanted to follow Mother Teresa’s example.
39. What is Tracy’s “new idea” (Paragraph 2) of being a volunteer?
A. Going abroad to help the sick.
B. Working in Mother Teresa’s home.
C. Doing simple things to help the poor.
D. Improving oneself through helping others.

A mother of nine who started medical school when her youngest child was 4 years old graduated with her degree and planed to be a neurosurgeon.
Sarah Merrill, now 41, said her journey to medical school began at 17. She then met her husband and got married. Merrill first thought about going to school part-time to get a degree, but later she decided to follow her dream of attending medical school. Certainly, it was a challenge. Speaking of her successfully returning to university, Merrill owed it to her family largely. “When I was accepted by Mayo Clinic Ali x School of Medicine, we moved from Pennsylvania to Arizona,” said Merrill, who is moving to Indiana with her family to begin her residency (实习期) in neurosurgery. “In fact, they volunteered these movements. I know it was tough for all of us.”
Merrill and her children often have “homework parties” where they study for their own courses. Merrill’s choice has given a kind of stimulus to her children. Merrill felt touched knowing her 11-year-old daughter wants to become a surgeon and overhearing her son tell his friends his mom’s going to be a cool brain surgeon, though he doesn’t understand that really.
Merrill’s next step into a neurosurgery residency will take her into a male-dominated field where only 5% of board-certified neurosurgeons are women. Dr. Michele Halyard at Mayo Clinic Ali x School of Medicine said Merrill was known as a focused student. Halyard said, “If you can deal with nine children patiently, the residency should be a piece of cake because no amount of stress will make you fail.”
Merrill had considered choosing a more family-friendly career, but, again, she chose to follow her original dream. It’s the same advice she would give to all. “Set the goal which you’re really enthusiastic about, and it helps to think small. If you know what your interest is, focus on the next step. Then you’ll get where you want to go.”
40. Why does Merrill mention their house moving?
A. To stress the support of her family. B. To show her determination to be a doctor.
C. To reflect difficulties in attending college. D. To describe the process of pursuing her dream.
41. What does the underlined word “stimulus” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Comfort. B. Development. C. Choice. D. Inspiration.
42. What do Halyard’s words in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Merrill can make it in the residency. B. Merrill will have more stress to handle.
C. Being mom ensures Merrill a better doctor. D. Staying focused and sensible is key to success.
43. What does Merrill mainly suggest in the last paragraph?
A. Starting with small things. B. Being true to your passion.
C. Choosing a family-friendly career. D. Having the courage to dream big.
C
It was a cold winter. The wind blew all night and the snow was blinding. When morning came, my three children and I got up and made our way to the windows. As we looked out of the window, we saw that the henhouse was gone. Our three hens had been blown away.
I looked at the emptiness outside. Then I saw all three chickens sitting around the edge of a white bucket. How was this strong wind not blowing them into the field beyond? I quickly put on my long heavy winter coat and large boots.
I shouted at the wind as it blew. I was alone, struggling in the snow. My children stared out of the window into the vast white sea of snow, their eyes focused for any sign of movement. Outside I heard the sound of my boots as I braved the elements.
The snow circling around me, I slowly made my way to the soft cluck-cluck-cluck sound my hens always made. When I reached them, I saw that their little feet were holding on to the edge of the bucket, heads bent (弯下) forward and away from the wind. I gently lifted each hen and put it carefully into the warm inside. Then I began the freezing walk back to the small shed (棚子) directly behind our house. One by one I laid my chickens on the cold floor, and they began to cluck softly.
As I shut the shed doors, my eyes went directly to the window where my children were watching. They jumped up and down cheering, and so did I! I wasn’t some superman from movies. I was simply a mom, but the look on my children’s faces told me that they thought I was a hero mom.
44. How did the author feel when seeing three chickens sitting around a bucket?
A. Frightened. B. Unbelievable. C. Regretful. D. Confident.
45. How did the author reach the hens?
A. By shouting at the henhouse. B. By wearing protective clothes.
C. By searching for the white bucket. D. By following the sound of the hens.
46. What can be learned about the author from the passage?
A. She struggled to be a hero. B. She enjoyed herself in the snow.
C. She was watched by her children all the way. D. She wanted to be viewed as some superman.
47. Which is the best title for the text?
A. Hens in Trouble. B. Hero in the Snow. C. Kindness in Need. D. Whether in Extreme.

It is natural that young people are often uncomfortable when they are with their parents. They say that their parents don’t understand them. They often think that their parents are out of touch with modern ways, that they are too serious and too strict with their children, and that they seldom give their children a free hand.
It is true that parents often find it difficult to win their children’s trust and they tend(倾向) to forget how they themselves felt when young.
For example, young people like to act on the spot without much thinking. It is one of their ways to show that they have grown up and they can face any difficult situation. Old people worry more easily. Most of them plan things in advance, at least in the back of their minds, and do not like their plans to be upset by something unexpected.
When you want your parents to let you do something, you will have better success if you ask before you really start doing it.
Young people often make their parents angry with their choices in clothes, in entertainment and in music. But they do not mean to cause any trouble; it is just that they feel cut off from the older people’s world, into which they have not yet been accepted. That’s why young people want to make a new culture of their own, and if their parents don’t like their music or entertainment or clothes or their way of speech, this will make the young people extremely happy.
Sometimes you are so proud of yourself that you do not want your parents to say “yes” to what you do. All you want is to be left alone and do what you like. It is natural enough, after being a child for so many years, when you were completely under your parents’ control.
If you prefer to control your life, you’d better win your parents over and try to get them to understand you. If your parents see that you have a high sense of responsibility, they will certainly give you the right to do what you want to do.
48. According to the text, young people prefer to __________.
A. ask for advice before they really start to do anything
B. think in the same way as their parents do
C. be very strict with themselves
D. do things without thinking carefully ahead
49. Why do young people like to have clothes, entertainment and music in their way?
A. Because they want to try on something new and look different from the older.
B. Because they try to get their parents to be proud of them.
C. Because they want to give their parents a big surprise.
D. Because they want to test whether they are cleverer than old people.
50. According to the text, young people want to make a new culture of their own, because _________.
A. they feel they are cleverer than old people
B. they do not want to get into trouble with their parents
C. they don’t feel they belong to the world of the old people
D. they want to show the new is better than the old
51. If a young man intends to control his own life, it’s better for him to __________.
A. do everything according to his own wish
B. hold himself responsible for everything he does
C. do everything beyond his parents’ control
D. do everything the way his parents do

It turns out that overworking your brain with either physical or mental exercise may lower your ability to delay self-satisfaction. And that may set you up for poor choices in your self-care and finances.
A new study published in the journal Current Biology asked excellent endurance athletes to overtrain for three out of 9 weeks, and compared them to a group who did a normal 9-week training program.
Not only did those overworked athletes perform worse on a cycling test at the end of the overtraining, MRIs of their brains during behavioral tasks showed more exhaustion in the cognitive control part of the brain system. "Cognitive control in this situation is the capacity to maintain exercise despite things like muscle pain," said study author Bastien Blain, a research associate at University College London. “And what we found is that there is an intelligence factor involved in exercising and it has a limited capacity. You cannot use it forever.''
In other words, your brain will burn out and affect your body's ability to exercise. But that's not all. Overworking that part of the brain also reduced the athletes' abilities to resist temptation of an immediate reward."For example, they were asked whether they preferred $10 now or $50 in six months," Blain said. “And those who overtrained were more likely to choose the immediate reward, which is interesting. It could provide a mechanism to explain why some athletes are using drugs to improve their performance."
One caution about the exercise study is that it only looked at endurance athletes, said. Dr. Mare-Andre Cornier, who is associate director of Colorado University's Anschutz Health and Wellness Center. "This is potentially very important for the higher end athlete who is overdoing it," he said.“But does this have anything to do with the average Joe going to the gym? You can't conclude that from this study."
52. According to Paragraph 3 we know that__________.
A. Overworked athletes did well in their training. B. A limited capacity can't be used forever.
C. The intelligence factor can't be used forever. D. Cognitive control is the ability to start exercise.
53. Why did overworked athletes tend to choose the immediate reward?
A. Because overtraining led to their bad decisions.
B. Because all parts of their brain were tired.
C. Because they were too eager to succeed.
D. Because they took drugs to improve their performance.
54. What is the passage mainly about?
A. A study about self-satisfaction. B. Negative effects of too much exercise.
C. The relation between brain and exercise. D. Poor choices in people's self care and finances.
55. What can we infer from the passage ?
A. There is a limit to the brain.
B. Higher end athletes have great potential
C. Top athletes possibly suffer from overtraining.
D. Delaying self-satisfaction results in better performance.

【答案】40. A 41. D 42. A 43. B

根据第二段的“Sarah Merrill, now 41, said her journey to medical school began at 17. I know it was tough for all of us.”(现年41岁的Sarah Merrill说,她的医学院之旅始于17岁。 故选A。

【42题详解】

【43题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Merrill had considered choosing a more family-friendly career, but, again, she chose to follow her original dream. It’s the same advice she would give to all. “Set the goal which you’re really enthusiastic about, and it helps to think small. If you know what your interest is, focus on the next step. Then you’ll get where you want to go.”(梅里尔曾考虑过选择一份对家庭更友好的职业,但她还是选择了追随自己最初的梦想。这也是她给所有人的建议。“设定一个你真正感兴趣的目标,从小处着眼会有所帮助。如果你知道你的兴趣是什么,就专注于下一步。然后你就会到达你想去的地方。”)”可知,Merrill建议遵循真正热爱的目标。故选B。
