Here are 4 parks that offer ideal visiting conditions. Everglades National Park (Florida) By the middle of October, temperatures have dropped to a much more comfortable level for hiking, biking, and paddling in the park. As water levels drop in the fall, it is easier to spot animals living in water like gators and manatees. Fall is also a good season for bird-watching, as various migratory species spend winter in the park or pass through on their way to the tropics. Congaree National Park (South Carolina) Congaree was established in 2003 to protect that largest old-growth bottomland hardwood forest in the American Southeast. Autumn’s gentle weather makes it easier to walk along the park’s path and look for migratory birds’ or fall colors. It is a national park that never charges an entrance fee. Natchez Trace Parkway (Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee) The Natchez Trace flaunts more than 10,000 years of American history and some of the prettiest scenery in the entire South. Fall is romantic, the parkway’s campgrounds and picnic areas flanked by fallen leaves, and migratory birds making their way south along the Mississippi Flyway. The fall season also brings special events along the parkway like the Natchez Balloon Festival (October 18—19) and Dancing With The King (October 18—20) in Tupelo, Mississippi. Captiol Reef National Park (Utah) There’s a special reason to visit in the fall-harvest season in the orchards of historic Fruita. For a small fee, visitors can self-pick peaches, pears, and apples with tools provided by the Park Service. Afterward, they can enjoy the fruits of their labor at the picnic area and campground in the park. 1. What can visitors easily do in Everglades National Park in the fall? A. See water animals. B. Attend special events. C. Pick various fruits. D. Learn about history. 2. Which park is free to enter? A. Everglades National Park. B. Congaree National Park. C. Natchez Trace Parkway. D. Captiol Reef National Park. 3. What do Natchez Trace and Captiol Reef have in common? A. They both offer visitors fruit-picking activities. B. They both offer visitors hiking and riding activities. C. They both allow visitors to watch migratory birds. D. They both provide picnic and camp grounds for visitors. 1. A 2. B 3. Yet, research shows that putting pen to paper offers cognitive (认知的) benefits that digital tools can’t bring. Statistically most studies on the relationship between handwriting and memory show that people are better at remembering things that they have written down, by hand than on a computer. Handwriting can significantly impact how we absorb and memorize information. The advantages of writing by hand is that it involves a variety of senses in the writing process. “Holding a pen with our fingers, pressing it on a surface, and moving our hands to create letters and words is a complex cognitive-motor skill that requires a lot of our attention,” says Mellissa Prunty, a professor at Brunel University in London who has researched the relationship between handwriting and learning. “This deeper level of processing, which involves mapping sounds to letter formations, has been shown to support reading and spelling in children,” Prunty says. To better understand how our senses influence our cognition, Vander Meer and her co-worker looked at brain scans of 36 university students who performed writing tasks. The students were asked to write some words using pen and paper or typing them on a keyboard. Their brain activity during each task was captured through electronicephalogram (EEG) techniques. “The most surprising thing was that the whole brain was active when the students were writing by hand, while much smaller areas were active when they were typewriting,” Vander Meer says. “This suggests that when you are writing by hand you are using most of your brain to get the job done.” In Norway, many schools stopped teaching cursive writing, making pupils write and read on an iPad. Vander Meer hopes to change this trend through her research. “I think we should have at least a minimum of handwriting in primary school curricula simply because it is so good for the developing brain,” she says. 8. Why are people more likely to remember things written by hand than typed on a computer? A. It can activate multiple senses. B. It requires a lot of attention. C. It helps people to learn new words quickly. D. It brings great benefits to our cognitive ability. 9. What does the underlined word “captured” mean in paragraph 4? A. Attracted. B. Recorded. C. Caught. D. Represented. 10. What does van der Meer advise people to do in the future? A. Quit adopting handwriting. B. Write and read on screens. C. Change their writing habits. D. Reserve handwriting practice. 11. Where is the passage probably taken from? A. A travel magazine. B. A student textbook. C. A science and education magazine. D. A campus newspaper. A 9. B 10. D 11. 根据第三段中“The advantages of writing by hand is that it involves a variety of senses in the writing process. “Holding a pen with our fingers, pressing it on a surface, and moving our hands to create letters and words is a complex cognitive-motor skill that requires a lot of our attention,” (手写的好处是在书写过程中涉及到多种感官。“用手指握笔,把笔按在纸上,然后移动我们的手来创造字母和单词,这是一项复杂的认知运动技能,需要我们投入大量的注意力。”)”以及““This deeper level of processing, which involves mapping sounds to letter formations, has been shown to support reading and spelling in children,” Prunty says.( “这种更深层次的处理,包括将声音映射到字母的构成,已经被证明对儿童的阅读和拼写有帮助,” Prunty说。)” 故选A。 根据第四段“To better understand how our senses influence our cognition, Vander Meer and her co-worker looked at brain scans of 36 university students who performed writing tasks.( 为了更好地理解我们的感官是如何影响我们的认知的,Vander Meer和她的同事对36名完成写作任务的大学生进行了脑部扫描。)” 根据最后一段“I think we should have at least a minimum of handwriting in primary school curricula simply because it is so good for the developing brain,( 我认为我们应该在小学课程中至少有一个最起码的书写课程,因为它对大脑发育有好处,)”可知Vander Meer认为在小学课程中应该至少有一个最起码的书写课程,因为这对儿童的大脑发展极为有益,因此其建议人们应该保留书写练习。 根据第一段中“Yet, research shows that putting pen to paper offers cognitive (认知的) benefits that digital tools can’t bring.(然而,研究表明,把笔写在纸上可以带来数字工具无法带来的认知好处。)” C。 D The bicycle, one of the most important inventions in human history, has a long and fascinating story. Its development has had an important impact on the way people travel and has played an important part in the development of modern transportation. The earliest form of the bicycle can date back to the early 19th century. In 1817, a German baron named Karl von Drais invented a two-wheeled vehicle with no pedals called the “draisine”. The rider would push it forward with their feet while sitting on a saddle. Although it was a great improvement over walking, the draisine was not very efficient and required a lot of physical effort to operate. In the 1860s, Frenchmen Pierre Michaux and his son Ernest added pedals to the front wheel, creating a more efficient mode of transportation. This new design became known as the “boneshaker” because the ride was extremely bumpy (颠簸) because of the wooden wheels and the lack of a suspension system (避震系统). Despite its imperfection, the “boneshaker” was a popular mode of transportation then. In the 1880s, the British engineer John Kemp Starley invented the “safety bicycle”, which had equal-sized wheels and a chain driven rear wheel. This design was much more stable and comfortable than the earlier models. It quickly became the standard for bicycles. Manufacturers began to mass-produce bicycles using new materials and manufacturing techniques. During the 20th century, the bicycle continued to advance. The introduction of pneumatic tires, better braking systems, and lighter materials such as aluminum and carbon fiber made bicycles even more efficient and comfortable. Bicycles also became a popular form of entertainment and sport. Today, bicycle is still playing an important part in modern life as a means of transportation and a healthy way to exercise. Compared to cars and other motorised vehicles, bike-riding will become more popular in the future, because it offers a clean and non-polluting way of getting people around and has offered us climate-friendly travel. In conclusion, bicycle is a great future-proof invention in an uncertain world. 12. What can we infer from paragraph 3? A. The boneshaker didn’t provide convenience for people. B. The boneshaker was imperfect and not welcome. C. The boneshaker was extremely hard to ride. D. The boneshaker ride was very uncomfortable. 13. According to the passage, what’s the advantage of bicycle compared to motorised vehicles? A. It’s much popular. B. It’s much greener. C. It’s much cheaper. D. It’s more convenient. 14. How is the passage organised? A. Cause and effect. B. Comparisons. C. Order of time. D. Problem and solution. 15. Which of the following can be the best title for this passage? A. The History and Impact of the Bicycle. B. The Important Function of the Bicycle. C. The Different Types of the Bicycle. D. The Invention of the Bicycle. 12. D 13. B 14. C 15. At that time, in order to get us to know each other as soon as possible, our teacher made all the girls in the class sit next to someone different every week. One day, the teacher asked Shirley, with whom I had never talked, to sit beside me. I wanted to get along well with her, but she was always shy and quiet. On one of those days, I noticed that Shirley was very upset. I asked her what was wrong. She kept silent for a long time. Finally, she told me that she came from a big family and she had several siblings. Her father couldn’t afford school books for all of the children. Seeing her pain, I couldn’t help but blurt out, “My parents can buy books for all of you.” But she refused. When I came back home, I told my mom the story. Mom said that it was good that I had tried to help, but I should stop worrying about it because there was nothing more that I could do if she had refused my offer to help. A moment later, she recommended that I help Shirley in a way that Shirley might accept. That night, I tossed and turned in bed, thinking what I should do. Paragraph 1: Suddenly, an idea flashed into my mind. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: On Sunday, I went to her house with the books. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Suddenly, an idea flashed into my mind. Maybe I can find her some second-hand books. It doesn’t cost anything and could solve her problem. Immediately, I called my elder cousin, who just graduated from our school. Having been informed of what was going on, he also showed great sympathy for Shirley, and gave me the books. But I’m still a little worried about Shirley: Would she accept the books without any pressure? On Sunday, I went to her house with the books. With a happy heart, I was about to knock at the door when it happened to me that she would misunderstand my kindness. Nervously I rang the doorbell. She couldn’t hide her surprise when seeing me standing at the door. When I explained why I had come, she gave me a big smile. I let out a quiet sigh as she took the books from my hand! After the problem was solved, we agreed to go to school together the next day. This time, I saw a light of hope on her face. 词汇激活 行为类 ①打电话:call/phone ②被告知:be informed of /be told ③提供:give/offer 情绪类 ①担心:be worried about/be concerned about ②吃惊:surprise/amazement/astonishment 【点睛】[高分句型1] Immediately, I called my elder cousin, who just graduated from our school. (由引导词who引导的非限制性定语从句) [高分句型2] Having been informed of what was going on, he also showed great sympathy for Shirley, and gave me the books. B At the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, Chinese breakdancer (霹雳舞者) Liu Qingyi won gold in the women’s breakdancing event, giving her the chance to enter the Paris 2024 Olympics. At just 18 years old, she became a new star in the world of breakdancing. “It was not easy to get the gold medal. I competed in many overseas countries this year, which was a challenge for me. Getting an Olympic ticket made me more confident,” Liu told Xinhua. Born in 2005 in Henan province, Liu started learning breakdancing at age 10. She had tried many other hobbies before starting breakdancing, such as playing the guitar, boxing and taekwondo. “There are no strict rules in breakdancing, and it feels free,” Liu told China Sports Daily. Such “freedom”, however, comes at a cost, involving hard training. In order to master a360-degree rotation (旋转) on the floor, Liu had to practice for several months. But it seems that nothing can stop Liu. Fueled by her own passion, this young breakdancer is only growing stronger and more courageous (勇敢的) as she continues her exciting journey. At Outbreak Europe 2022 in Slovakia, Liu became the first Chinese breakdancer to win the world’s top breakdancing competition. Less than a month later, the teenager won the World Battle 2022 breakdancing contest after competing with breakdancers from over 50 countries and regions. Known for her energetic and powerful style, Liu is always trying to innovate (创新) in her performances. “I am constantly exploring how to integrate elements of Chinese culture, such as martial arts, Peking Opera, folk dances, and more into breakdancing to create my own style,” Liu told Hunan Daily. “In this way, we can better introduce Chinese culture to the audience at the same time,” she explained to China Daily. At the Paris 2024 Olympics, Liu got the third place and won honor for her country, showing the talent of Chinese breakdancers to the world. 4. What qualified Liu Qingyi for the Paris 2024 Olympics? A. Her overcoming all difficulties to win honor for her country. B. Her winning the breakdancing event at the 19th Asian Games. C. Her growing into a new star in the world of breakdancing. D. Her competing in breakdancing events with many competitors. 5. What can we learn from paragraphs 3 and 4? A. Liu has tried many hobbies since age 10. B. Learning a basic move costs several months. C. By improving and strengthening her dancing skills. 7. Which of the following can best describe Liu Qingyi? A. Curious and brave. B. Confident and independent. C. Generous and determined. D. Hard-working and creative. C Over the past decade, keyboards and screens have quietly replaced handwriting in our daily routines, from classrooms to office meetings. A A travel magazine. B. A student textbook. C. A science and education magazine. D. A campus newspaper. D The bicycle, one of the most important inventions in human history, has a long and fascinating story. This new design became known as the “boneshaker” because the ride was extremely bumpy (颠簸的) because of the wooden wheels and the lack of a suspension system (避震系统). _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
