No matter where you are, knowing how to protect yourself and your family during an earthquake is necessary. Here are some tips for you.
Duck, Drop, Cover and Hold
Duck under a strong piece of furniture, if possible. Most earthquake injuries are the result of being hit by something falling on you. Drop to the floor to avoid falling or being thrown down. And protect you from flying glass. Use clothes, blankets, cushions or furniture for covering. Hold on to whatever you’re using, as the ground motion may be violent. Get away from glass, bookcases or anything heavy that could fall over on you.
Stay away from the doors
Doorways used to be recommended but most experts now say: stay away from them. Doors can suddenly shut with bone crushing force. Anyway, the experts say that in modern construction a doorway is no stronger than any other location along the wall.
Try to run outside
While the ground is moving, the greatest danger is of being injured by taking a fall or being hit by a falling piece of building as you exit. If you smell gas or when the shaking stops, calmly, carefully make your way out and get clear of the building. Before you leave, get shoes on because you will be walking on broken glass. If you’re in a crowd, stay calm, and take what can cover you and find where you are. In a crowd the greatest dangers are panic and the rush for an exit.
1. Which of the following is TRUE about earthquakes?
A. Floors cause most injuries.
B. Doors should be shut at all times.
C. Clothes can be used for protection.
D. Following a crowd is always right.
2. Which of the following best explains “recommended” underlined in this text?
A. Introduced.
B. Realized.
C. Suggested.
D. Explained.
3. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To inform people of possible dangers of an earthquake.
B. To tell family members to stay calm in an earthquake.
C. To order people to gain knowledge about an earthquake.
D. To introduce ways to protect people in an earthquake.

I’ve been writing now for 34 years. It all started when I was just 18 years. As a boy growing up, I probably read hundreds of books. I read mysteries, science fiction, thrillers, and just about any other type of book I could find. I had a thirst for knowledge that never seemed to disappear, no matter how many books I read over the years.
Then suddenly, I found that I too had ideas of my own that I wanted to write and share. I wanted to share things that were full of goodness, love, joy, and happiness. I tried to ignore my desire at first, but as any writer will tell you, once ideas awaken inside of you, they don’t leave you alone until you write them down. I didn’t have a computer, or even a typewriter, but I grabbed a pen and a notebook and wrote down everything that was burning inside of me.
When I was finally done, I didn’t know how to share my work with the world. There was no Internet back then, no smartphones, and no social media. However, I sought out the editor of my local newspaper and asked if he would like to print what I’d written. He was a good man, full of both wisdom and kindness. He not only printed my first story but agreed to publish anything else I was willing to write.
After that, of course, nothing could stop me. I continued to write new articles each week, which were published in different local papers and later on the Internet. Years later I even self-published two collections of my stories in book form.
Through my writing, I slowly became a better person. Writing allowed me to discover the goodness and light that exist in us all. I also found that we are all writers whether we put pen to paper or not.
With every choice we make, with every thought we think, and with every action we take, we are writing our own life story.
4. What made the author read plenty of books?
A. His thirst for knowledge. B. His father’s suggestion.

5. Why did the author start writing?
A. An editor advised him to do so. B. He wanted to express his own ideas.
C. He decided to make money. D. He tried to be a publisher.
6. How did the author share his own works according to the text?
A. By printing them himself.
B. By his friends’ recommendation.
C. By advertising them just on the street.
D. By publishing his works online, in local papers and in book form.
7. What can we learn from the text?
A. Writing improved the author a lot. B. The author encouraged others to write.
C. Writing is as important as reading. D. It’s a good choice to write books.

A teenager needs to have a sense of independence in their life to feel secure (安全的). To some teenagers independence means a lot to them, and I think that some parents don’t allow their teenagers enough independence.
Independence has something to do with freedom. Some kids are not allowed to go anywhere alone, and the only thing their schedule includes is going to school, coming home, going to sleep, and repeating the process the next day. Parents tend to be afraid that their kids can get hurt if they go outside into the world. But if parents control their kids too much, they may never learn to live on their own. The best way for a teenager to learn lesson is through experience. I think it is beneficial for teenagers to have freedom.
Teenagers’ lack of freedom can also stop them from having good friendship at school. Some might say this is a good thing, because it helps them focus more on their school work. I argue that this can only discourage them not to do their school work. Some parents do not allow their children to be around their friends outside the school, thinking that this will get them into trouble. But I don’t think so. Instead, isn’t this a good reason for parents to get their children a cellphone? Cellphones allow teenagers to stay in touch with their parents, and communicate with friends.
Privacy is another issue between parents and their teenagers. Teenagers tend to enjoy relaxation by themselves in their own room. This also gives them a sense of independence. It often annoys teenagers when their parents enter their room when they are not home. I know that my mom always goes in my room when I’m not home, and this has brought me to the point where I have asked many times to get a lock on my door.
8. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A. Kids know how to live independently.
B. Some parents allow their kids no freedom.
C. It benefits teenagers to have freedom.
D. Kids have a dull routine every day
9. In the opinion of the author, ___________.
A. parents should make it easy for kids to communicate with their friends
B. good friendships between kids harm their school work
C. it is unnecessary for a kid to have a cellphone
D. kids should focus on the school work
10. How do teenagers usually feel when their parents enter their rooms in their absence?
A. Disappointed B. Lucky
C. Angry D. Calm
11. The author hopes to have her door locked in order to ___________.
A. keep her father from reading her dairy
B. prevent her mother entering her room
C. Protect herself from any harm
D. Stop thieves from going in
C 9. A 10. C 11. B
由第二段“Independence has something to do with freedom. Some kids are not allowed to go anywhere alone, and the only thing their schedule includes is going to school, coming home, going to sleep, and repeating the process the next day. Parents tend to be afraid that their kids can get hurt if they go outside into the world.(独立与自由有关。有些孩子不被允许单独去任何地方,他们唯一的日程安排就是上学、回家、睡觉,然后第二天重复这个过程。父母往往害怕他们的孩子如果走到外面的世界会受伤。)”以及“The best way for a teenager to learn lesson is through experience. I think it is beneficial for teenagers to have freedom(对青少年来说,学习的最好方式是通过经验。我认为青少年拥有自由是有益的)”可知,作者提出独立与自由有关,指出很多父母过分控制自己的孩子,这样孩子永远不可能学会独立,因此第二段主要讲的是拥有自由对青少年有好处。故选C。
9题详解】
推理判断题。 根据第三段“Instead, isn’t this a good reason for parents to get their children a cellphone? Cellphones allow teenagers to stay in touch with their parents, and communicate with friends.(相反,这难道不是父母给孩子买手机的一个好理由吗?手机让青少年与父母保持联系,并与朋友交流。)”可知,作者认为父母应该让孩子和他们的朋友交流变得容易。故选A。
根据第四段“It often annoys teenagers when their parents enter their room when they are not home.(当青少年不在家的时候,父母进入他们的房间,这常常会惹恼他们。)”
根据文章最后一段“I know that my mom always goes in my room when I’m not home, and this has brought me to the point where I have asked many times to get a lock on my door.(我知道我妈妈总是在我不在家的时候进入我的房间,这让我不得不多次要求给我的门上一把锁。)”
D
Rainforests are home to a rich variety of medicinal plants, food, birds and animals. Can you believe that a single bush(灌木丛)in the Amazon may have more species of ants than the whole of Britain! About 480 varieties of trees may be found in just one hectare of rainforest.
Rainforests are the lungs of the planet-storing vast quantities of carbon dioxide and producing a significant amount of the world's oxygen. Rainforests have their own perfect system for ensuring their own survival; the tall trees make a canopy(树冠层)of branches and leaves which protect themselves, smaller plants, and the forest animals from heavy rain, intense dry heat from the sun and strong winds.
Amazingly, the trees grow in such a way that their leaves and branches, although close together, never actually touch those of another tree. Scientists think this is the plants' way to prevent the spread of any tree diseases and make life more difficult for leaf-eating insects like caterpillars. To survive in the forest, animals must climb, jump or fly across the gaps. The ground floor of the forest is not all tangled leaves and bushes, like in films, but is actually fairly clear. It is where dead leaves turn into food for the trees and other forest life.
They are not called rainforests for nothing! Rainforests can generate 75%of their own rain. At least 80 inches of rain a year is normal-and in some areas there may be as much as 430 inches of rain annually. This is real rain-your umbrella may protect you in a shower, but it won't keep you dry if there is a full rainstorm. In just two hours, streams can rise ten to twenty feet. The humidity(湿气)of large rainforests contributes to the formation of rainclouds that may travel to other countries in need of rain.
12. What can we learn about rainforests from the first paragraph?
A. They produce oxygen. B. They cover a vast area.
C. They are well managed. D. They are rich in wildlife.
13. Which of the following contributes most to the survival of rainforests?
A. Heavy rains B. Big trees.
C. Small plants. D. Forest animals.
14. Why do the leaves and branches of different trees avoid touching each other?
A For more sunlight. B. For more growing space.
C. For self-protection. D. For the detection of insects.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Life-Giving Rainforests B. The Law of the Jungle
C Animals in the Amazon D. Weather in Rainforests
D 13. B 14. C 15. A
Rainforests are home to a rich variety of medicinal plants, food, birds and animals.
Rainforests have their own perfect system for ensuring their own survival; the tall trees make a canopy(树冠层)of branches and leaves which protect themselves, smaller plants, and the forest animals from heavy rain, intense dry heat from the sun and strong winds.
Scientists think this is the plants' way to prevent the spread of any tree diseases and make life more difficult for leaf-eating insects like caterpillars.

An Honest Mistake
Karie double-checked the words on her spelling test. If she got 100 percent today, she’d win her class’ First-Quarter Spelling Challenge and a brand new dictionary.
Three more words to go. N-i-c-e-l-y. Q-u-i-c-k-l-y. H-o-n-e-s-t-y. Wait! She’d spelled honesty, not honestly. She hurriedly erased the t-y and wrote1-y before handing in her paper.
Ms. Smith graded the test papers at the break. Meanwhile, Karie sat restlessly in her seat with her fingers crossed. Then, Ms. Smith walked to the front of the room and cleared her throat, “Congratulations, Karie! You did it! ” she announced proudly.
The whole class burst into applause! Ms. Smith presented Karie with her prize. Karie smiled broadly as she read the label on the box:
To Karie Carter, for her perfect first-quarter score in spelling.
“Everything OK?” Mom asked as Karie burst through the front door after school. Karie didn’t answer. As if by magic, she took out her spelling test paper and prize and showed them to her mother. Mom hugged her, asking her to put the test paper on the fridge so that Dad could see it when he got home.
Karie took another look at the test paper before putting it on the fridge. Her hands stopped in the mid air. She just couldn’t believe her own eyes. Honesly?
YES! H-O-N-E-S-L-Y!
Mom sensed something unusual and asked why. Karie quickly put the test paper into her backpack and explained that she was just too excited. Mom brought her some tea. Yes, a “t” was exactly what she needed
After drinking a little, Karie stamped (重步走) down the hall, lost in thought. How could she tell the class she hadn’t earned the prize after all?

Paragraph 2:
The next morning, Karie went to school earlier than usual.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Later Dad came in with excitement. He asked eagerly for Karie’s spelling test paper. Karie looked away from her father. Anyhow, she unwillingly went to the room and pulled out the test paper. Dad fixed his eyes on the paper, a pleasant smile lifting the corner of his mouth: “I’m proud of you, sweetie.” Karie pretended to be smiling. (或Eyes on the paper, Dad spotted “honesly”. He frowned, “Probably you don’t deserve the prize.” ) Meanwhile a sense of guilt rose up inside her. Understanding what she should do, she had a sleepless night.
The next morning, Karie went to school earlier than usual. “Morning, early bird! ” Ms. Smith greeted her. With trembling hands, Karie hesitantly handed the teacher the spelling paper as well as the dictionary. “I can’t keep this. I misspelled ‘honestly’ and you didn’t catch it.” For a moment, the teacher stood quietly reading the label on the dictionary. Then picking up her pen, she crossed out the word ‘perfect’ and wrote ‘honest’ before returning the dictionary to Karie. “Keep this. But for honesty.”
Later Dad came in with excitement. Dad hoped to appreciate Karie’s amazing performance in the spelling test, but what greeted him made him confused: Karie looked very sad, tears floating on her face. Immediately, Dad gathered his princess into his arms. Hesitantly, Karie shared what had happened and asked for his advice. Thinking for a moment, Dad simply asked Karie to decide on her own. Though feeling torn between the title and the honesty, she finally chose the latter.
The next morning, Karie went to school earlier than usual. “Morning, early bird!” Ms. Smith smiled at her. Hesitating for a while, Karie gathered her courage and admitted to Ms. Smith that she had actually made a spelling mistake in the test the day before. With these words, she handed over the test paper and the prize. She stood there nervously, wondering what Ms. Smith would do. But never could she imagine that Ms. Smith put the dictionary back into her hands, saying, “Though you spelled the word wrong, but you did the right thing—honesty. I’m proud of you!

A
No matter where you are, knowing how to protect yourself and your family during an earthquake is necessary.

C. His intention to be a writer. D. His demand to become excellent.
C

C. Animals in the Amazon D. Weather in Rainforests
