I recently experienced this first hand during a particularly challenging week. I had a hard day at work, my week didn’t go well and problems just kept popping up everywhere. Things broke or quit, unexpected bills came in and I was struggling to cope with all the stress. Then an unexpected run to the store popped up, when all I wanted to do was go home and well, I felt like I was at the boiling point. I made the trip across town to the store, even though I only needed a few things, and found the parking lot packed. To add to it, the person next to where I was going to park seemed to think his car was entitled to TWO parking spots, which bothered me when it was a small vehicle and it parked on the middle line of two spaces, clearly taking them both. I finally parked and then realized I had left my purse, with my debit card (借记卡), checkbook, etc., at home that day. Thankfully, I had a small amount of cash, so I grabbed it and my coupon (优惠券) book and went inside, thinking that with the coupons, I would even have some cash left over. The store was really busy, but I just went and found the few things I needed and got in one of the few lanes open, and prepared to wait. I waited and waited. Meanwhile, my impatience grew. After a stressful day, all I wanted to do was go home, but I was stuck in the checkout line. The line I joined seemed to crawl at a snail’s pace. My stress levels were rising. I was shifting restlessly while waiting in line when I spotted an old lady standing behind me. It seemed that she sensed my anxiety because she cast a kind smile. Awkwardly returning a smile, I kept waiting. After what seemed like an age, it was my turn and I got to the front. However, things didn’t go as I had expected. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I was about to go back for more cash when I felt a pat on my shoulder. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 文章大意:在一个诸事不顺、压力爆棚的一周后,作者去商店购物,停车场拥挤且有人占两个车位,进商店后发现忘带钱包,只剩少量现金,选好东西后在结账队伍中漫长等待,队伍移动缓慢,作者愈发焦躁,身后一位老妇人向其投来善意微笑。 1. “In the darkest of times, a single act of kindness can be the glimmer of hope that reignites our faith in humanity.”(在最黑暗的时刻,一个小小的善举可以成为希望的微光,重新点燃我们对人性的信念。) 2. “Kindness is the antidote to the poison of stress and negativity, a balm that soothes the weary soul.”(善良是压力和消极情绪之毒的解药,是抚慰疲惫心灵的良药。) 3. “Even in the face of life's trials, a helping hand extended can transform despair into gratitude and renew our spirit.”(即使在生活的考验面前,伸出的援助之手也能将绝望转化为感激,重振我们的精神。) 4. “The power of kindness lies not in its magnitude but in its ability to touch hearts and change lives, one small gesture at a time.”(善良的力量不在于其大小,而在于它能够触动心灵、改变生活,一次一个小举动。) 5. “Let us remember that every act of kindness is a ripple in the pond of life, spreading love and compassion far beyond what we can see.”(让我们记住,每一个善举都是生活池塘中的涟漪,将爱与同情传播得远远超出我们的视线。) However, things didn’t go as I had expected. The cashier rang up my items and the total came to more than the cash I had, even with the coupons. I felt my face flush with embarrassment as I started to rummage through my pockets, hoping to find some forgotten money. Panic set in as I realized I was short. I stammered an apology to the cashier and was about to ask her to put some items back when I froze, not knowing what to do. I was about to go back for more cash when I felt a pat on my shoulder. I turned around to see the old lady from behind me in line. She held out some money with a warm smile and said, “Dear, it seems you’re having a tough day. Here, take this. We all need a little help sometimes.” Tears welled up in my eyes as I took the money and thanked her profusely. In that moment, all the stress and negativity of the week melted away. I realized that kindness can come from the most unexpected places and that a small act of generosity can turn a bad day into a memorable one. However, things didn’t go as I had expected. As the cashier scanned the last item, I saw the total on the screen and my heart sank. It was more than what I had. I started to explain my situation, my voice trembling with anxiety. The people in line behind me were starting to get impatient. I felt so small and helpless, on the verge of tears. I was about to go back for more cash when I felt a pat on my shoulder. It was the old lady. She gently placed a few bills in my hand and said, “Don’t worry, child. This is for you. We’ve all been there. Let’s spread a little kindness today.” Her words were like a soothing balm. I paid for my things and turned to hug her. That day, I learned that no matter how tough life gets, a simple act of kindness can make all the difference and that we should always be open to receiving and giving it. However, things didn't go as I had expected. When the cashier totaled up my purchases, I realized that even with the coupons, I was short on cash. I felt my heart sink and my cheeks burn with embarrassment. I started to apologize and explain the situation, but the cashier just looked at me impatiently. I was about to ask her to remove some items when I froze, not knowing what to do. I was about to go back for more cash when I felt a pat on my shoulder. I turned around to see the kind old lady standing there. She handed me the exact amount of money I needed with a smile and said, "Honey, it looks like you could use a little help. We all have those days. Consider it a random act of kindness." I was speechless with gratitude. As I took the money and paid for my things, I realized that in the midst of all my stress and self-pity, I had overlooked the kindness that still exists in the world. This small act of kindness not only saved me from an embarrassing situation but also reminded me to be more positive and look for the good in people, even on the toughest of days.
