After finishing my teaching for a school year. I thought that I should go back to Montreal, Quebec, my hometown, for a visit. My main goal was to relax in preparation for the challenges of my retirement in the coming year.
Through my stay in Montreal I met lots of Chinese who were trying hard to succeed and then led a better life in Canada. Some travelled thousands of miles to get knowledge. When I spoke with some of them about the major barrier they had to face after they arrived in Canada, they all talked about the two official languages of Canada. But I was impressed by their ability to express their ideas while they were changing between English and French.
Almost all of those people said they often felt homesick. They missed their families and friends. Though Montreal had lots of Chinese restaurants, they longed for a home-cooked meal.
I met some tourists who were trying to realize their childhood dreams of experiencing the life in a developed country. When I asked them if Montreal had lived up to their expectations, they hesitated. They said that reality never agreed with fantasies. However, they were glad to have the opportunity to visit Montreal and didn’t regret taking the trip.
Not all the Chinese people I met were happy. I once met a young lady who met with a gentleman through the Internet. However, to her disappointment, he disappeared after he promised to marry her in Montreal.
I was served by another Chinese person who could not deal with the challenges of studying in an English-speaking environment and ended up working in a restaurant with low pay.
Exploring different parts of the world, without any doubt, is a rich experience .However, one should be realistic when it comes to leaving his hometown to start a new life in a foreign country. One should spend time examining the advantages and shortcomings of the adventure before he decides to chase an uncertain dream of achieving success or leading a better life.
24. Why did the author go back to his hometown?
A. To meet his old friends. B. To study a new language.
C. To go on with his teaching. D. To prepare for his retirement life.
25. What is the main barrier for some Chinese longing to get knowledge in Canada?
A. Food. B. Languages. C. Homesickness. D. Income.
26. The author thinks that ______.
A. overseas Chinese are good at communication in Canada
B. people often express their regret at the trip to Montreal
C. overseas Chinese feel disappointed at their life in Canada
D. people should think carefully before chasing their dreams abroad
27 What is the best title for the text?
A. Improving Life Skills in Canada B. Exploring Different Parts of Canada
C. Struggling for a Better Life in Canada D. Going to Canada — Your Ideal Destination
C
Earlier research had suggested we're best at learning grammar in early childhood. Then we hit a dead end around age 5. It's supposed to be much harder for older kids. The time when people can learn the rules and structure of a language well appears to last until around age 17 or 18. “But that's not so, ”says psychologist(心理学家)Joshua Hartshorne.
Hartshorne asked friends to take an online English grammar test. After completing the test, volunteers answered questions about where they had lived, the languages they had spoken from birth and the age at which they first started learning English. Hartshorne also asked how long they had lived in an English-speaking country. As he had hoped, people shared the test widely online. This let Hartshorne's group study the answers from 669, 498 native and non-native speakers of English. The researchers used statistics to find out when people with different English-speaking experiences reached their top grammar ability.
If people moved to a new country and began speaking English by age 10 to 12, they finally spoke it as well as folks who had learned both English and another language from birth. But both groups scored a little worse than people who spoke English only, the researchers found. The test results showed that around age 17, people's ability to learn grammar took a sharp drop. And those who started learning English after age 10 or 12 never reached the same level of English skillfulness as people who started younger. Why?The researchers think it's because they had fewer years to practice before their skills dropped off at surprise:Language learning did not end at 17. People's English skills kept improving a little until around age 30, the new study found. And this was true among both native speakers and those who learned English as a second language. Still, most language learning happened by age 20, the new study decided.
28. What age period is best for grammar learning according to earlier research?
A. From 17 to 20. B. From 5 to 12.
C. Before age 5. D. From 20 to 30.
29. How did Hartshorne get his study statistics?
A By experimenting in the lab. B. By making an online survey.
C. By studying historical records. D. By collecting earlier study results.
30. Which of the following agrees with Hartshorne's study results?
A. Language learning needs much practice.
B. Language learning ends at the age of 17.
C. The more languages you learn, the better.
D. It is best to learn language after 20 years old.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. How native speakers learn English?
B. What's the best age to learn a language?
C. What's the best way to learn a foreign language?
D. Why non-native speakers can never master a second language?
D
Almost every community has some form of rules and some way of enforcing them. So why do we have rules, and what makes people follow them?
Studies have suggested that the reason we don't like rule-breaking is because fairness is programmed into our brains. Scientists have found that the brain reacts in a particular way when we feel we are being treated unfairly.A fair situation makes us feel comfortable and even happy, but unfairness causes our brains to respond with negative feelings. The study found that this a so happened when subjects saw others being treated unfairly. They concluded that fairness is one of basic human needs.
Arriving at a feeling of fairness means considering different, often conflicting, points of view. Regardless of the disagreement, people almost always need to compromise. But it can be difficult to arrive at a compromise when there are conflicting interests. This is why communities have rules that everyone must follow.
Social controls are an important factor in setting and following rules. They influence the way we be have, and can be internal (内在的) or external. Internal controls come from within and are based on our values and fears. Most of us don't steal, for example, because we believe that theft is unfair and wrong. We also don't want to disappoint our family and friends. In other words, our internal controls keep us from behaving in ways that cause conflict.
External controls include rewards and punishments. Rewards, such as job promotions and praise, are designed to encourage people to be have and actin the interest of the whole community.
Punishments, such as public embarrassment, fines, and even imprisonment can prevent people from acting against the community's best interests.
People need their communities to function smoothly. If there were no rules, most people would probably still behave positively. However, there would always be a minority who would not. This is why a society without rules is unlikely to exist.
32. What does the underlined word ''this'' in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. A program in human brains.
B. A comfortable situation.
C. The response with bad feelings.
D. The requirement off fairness.
33. Why do communities have rules?
A. To punish illegal activities. B. To prevent disagreement.
C. To promote fairness. D. To meet various demands.
34. Which of the following is an example of internal control?
A. Take exams honestly because cheating is shameful
B. Park in the right place so as not to get a parking ticket.
C. Pay the electricity bill on time in order not to get a late fee.
D. Cooperate with your classmates to win a prize for your class.
35. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Living by the rules B. Why communities need rules
C. Reaching a compromise D. How fairness functions

第二节 (满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
During this past year, I’ve had three instances of car trouble. Each time these things happened, I was sick of the way most people hadn’t bothered to help. One of those times, I was on the side of the road for close to three hours with my big Jeep. I put signs in the windows, big signs that said NEED A JACK (千斤顶), and offered money. Nothing. Right as I was about to give up, a Mexican family in a small truck pulled over, and the father bounded out.
He sized up the situation and called for his daughter who spoke English. He conveyed through her that he had a jack but that it was too small for the Jeep, so we would need something to support it. Then he got a saw (锯子) from the truck and cut a section out of a big log on the side of the road. We rolled it over and put his jack on top, and we were in business.
I started taking the wheel off, and then, if you can believe it, I broke his tire iron. No worries: He handed it to his wife, and she was gone in a flash down the road to buy a new tire iron. She was back in 15 minutes. We finished the job, and I was a very happy man.
The two of us were dirty and sweaty. His wife prepared a pot of water for us to wash our hands. I tried to put a $20 bill in the man’s hand, but he wouldn’t take it, so instead I went up to the truck and gave it to his wife as quietly as I could. I asked the little girl where they lived. Mexico, she said. They were in Oregon so Mommy and Daddy could work on a fruit farm for the next few weeks. Then they would go home.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】13. A 14. C 15. A 16. C
【解析】
【原文】W: I don’t understand why you don’t want me to study abroad.
M: Because your mother and I want to look after you and make sure you are safe.
W: It’s not as if I’m going halfway round the earth to America or Australia. Anyway I’ve applied to colleges in Germany, France and Italy. My first choice would be Germany, followed by France of course, given that my German is much better than my French, but I wouldn’t mind a couple of years in Italy either. It would be great to learn a fourth language.
M: I still don’t understand why you want to go abroad. All your friends are staying here.
W:You know perfectly well that I’d like to work for the European Commission one day. Studying abroad would be helpful for that.
M: But studying abroad will be far more costly than studying here, not to mention the cost of living. Last time your mother and I were in Paris, we paid a fortune for a simple lunch.
W: Don’t worry. If I end up in Paris, I won’t be eating in expensive restaurants.

The photographs told the step-by-step story of how his company cleaned up a site in Canada. There were pictures of people doing tests and even a humorous PPT of waste flying away across the sky. Diane’s presentation consisted of professionally-designed slides. The slides had written information about successful projects, and technical information. Diane also used humour in her presentation. She told a story about how her company learned from a past mistake. After her presentation, not many people came to talk to Diane. After finishing my teaching for a school year. I thought that I should go back to Montreal, Quebec, my hometown, for a visit. My main goal was to relax in preparation for the challenges of my retirement in the coming year.
Through my stay in Montreal, I met lots of Chinese who were trying hard to succeed and then led a better life in Canada.
27. What is the best title for the text?

A. By experimenting in the lab.
【答案】28. C 29. B 30. A 31. B
【解析】
【分析】这是一篇说明文。研究发现在年龄越小的时候学习语言的能力越好,因为有更多时间进行训练。同时研究还发现,在30岁左右人的语言技能也会一直提高。

细节理解题。第一段第一句提到“Earlier research had suggested we're best at learning grammar in early childhood. Then we hit a dead end around age 5.”,在幼儿期时,人的语言能力是最高的,在5岁的时候就撞上了死胡同。由此判断,在5岁的时候语言学习能力有所下降。因此5岁前是最好的语言学习期。故选C。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。第二段提到“Hartshorne asked friends to take an online English grammar test.” 和“As he had hoped, people shared the test widely online. ”Hartshorne邀请他的朋友在网上进行英语语法测试,并且在网上广泛地分享了这个测试。由此判断Hartshorne是通过网上调研获得数据的。故选B。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。第三段提到“And those who started learning English after age 10 or 12 never reached the same level of English skillfulness as people who started younger. Why?The researchers think it's because they had fewer years to practice before their skills dropped off at surprise”在10-12岁后才开始学英语的人,他们的水平达不到从很小就开始学习英语的人。后面回答了产生这个现象的原因:因为在语言学习技能下降之前,他们练习的时间更少,由此判断,语言的学习是要不断练习的。故选A。

A. Take exams honestly because cheating is shameful
B. Park in the right place so as not to get a parking ticket.
C. Pay the electricity bill on time in order not to get a late fee.
D. Cooperate with your classmates to win a prize for your class.
35. What is the best title for this passage?

During this past year, I’ve had three instances of car trouble. Each time these things happened, I was sick of the way most people hadn’t bothered to help. One of those times, I was on the side of the road for close to three hours with my big Jeep. I put signs in the windows, big signs that said NEED A JACK (千斤顶), and offered money. Nothing. Right as I was about to give up, a Mexican family in a small truck pulled over, and the father bounded out.
He sized up the situation and called for his daughter, who spoke English.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】When I was about to say goodbye, the girl asked if I’d had lunch. I told her I hadn’t had lunch because I’d been waiting here for help for nearly three hours. The girl said they didn’t have lunch either. She suggested to her parents that we have lunch together. Their truck happened to have some food and some things for the picnic. So we ate together in a vacant lot by the side of the road. During that time, I told about what had happened to me and how I felt. They shared interesting stories about their lives in Mexico and on fruit farms. After lunch, the girl’s mother put a paper bag of fruit in my jeep. I showed my gratitude again and we said goodbye to each other.
After they left, I got into my jeep and opened the paper bag. There are some delicate fruits in the paper bag. I was surprised to find the money I had quietly left them. At the same time, there was a note written by a girl, which read “We are very happy to be able to help you. We have encountered many difficulties and been disappointed. But we met a lot of helpful people, which made us feel very warm. To help others with one’s own ability is also a kind of lifting a finger. The beauty of life comes from these lifting a finger. I hope you have a good life and a happy mood.” This made me very moved, and I would try my best to help more people in the future to make our world more beautiful and warmer.
