When I first arrived in China, I knew little Chinese. And some of the Chinese words I
31 had something to do with food. I learned the names of a few dishes,_32 I still
didn't know most of the things I saw on Chinese restaurant menus.33 , there were pictures
to help me.
Nearly every restaurant menu in China has 34 of food in it. But many restaurants I've
been to in the US don't. What is the reason for the difference?
One reason I've noticed about China is that food is a bigger part of their culture than it is
in the US. A common way to 35 someone in China is to ask them if they've eaten yet. Food
is just a bigger deal here-and having pictures of food in menus is part of that. Some menus are
almost 36 works (作品) of art, with beautiful photos.
Another reason is the 37_ of the dishes.Chinese dishes sometimes have fanciful(别出心裁
的) names like "gongbaojiding" or "disanxian". These are interesting names, but they don't really
tell you 38 the dishes are like. It's39 to have pictures, so you can actually see what
you are going to eat.
There are probably even more 40. All I know is that I was very thankful to have those
picture menus when I first came to China years ago.

I joined a band as a drummer in my middle school. I thought it would be fun playing the
drum. At first it was easy, but a month later, it got difficult. I was the only one who couldn't keep
pace (节奏) with the other players.
Our teacher, Angie, let me keep practicing while everyone else got to relax. I felt a deep
sense of shame as my teammates watched me fail so many times. Finally I got so tired of
practicing that 1 didn't care about doing it right.
"Are you giving up, Steve?" Angie asked. "Yes, I am," I shouted. Angie sent me inside the
music room. Then she came in and said, "Don't be sad. I believe you can make it! " She told me
never to give up. She left me alone and I realized Angie was right by giving up, I was also giving up
on the team and myself.
I decided to go on practicing. But I still couldn't play well. Knowing my difficulties, my
teammates gave me a hand. Thanks to their support and help, 1 began to keep pace with them.
Later, we acted wonderfully in the important show.

Glaciers (冰川 )are large bodies of ice and snow. Because they're so icy, it's very hard for
things to live on them. But glacier mice do.
Of course, glacier mice aren't mice. They're round balls of moss (苔藓 )that can grow to
about the size of a tennis ball. They're usually found in groups near small rocks on the surface of
icy glaciers.
Normal moss can't form on a glacier, so scientists believe glacier mice probably form around
something small, like a bit of dust(尘土),Because staying on the ice too long would kill the moss,
glacier mice form into a ball that allows them to move around, so that their different parts touch
the ice at different times,
Some scientists once did an experiment (实验) on glacier mice. They put a small device(设备)
inside 30 glacier mice to follow their movements. They learned that the mice traveled about 2.5
centimeters a day. They seemed to move in groups. They moved in the same direction and at
about the same speed, almost like a group of animals. The scientists tested several ideas that
might explain how the mice moved together, such as rolling downhill, being blown by the wind,
or following the sun. None of these could explain the movement of the glacier mice.
Glacier mice are still a mystery to scientists. For their next experiment, the scientists said
they would use cameras to take pictures of the movements of the mice over a long period of
time. Are you looking forward to getting the answer?
( ) 66. Where can glacier mice be found?

VIII.阅读表达(共 5题:每题 2分,10分)阅读下雨短文,简略回答问题,
The British artist Dominic Wilcox has created a pair of shoes. They can guide you home no
matter where you are in the world. He thought about the fairy tale The Wizard of Oz and how
Dorothy could click(点击 )her shoes together to go home. Then he decided to make a pair of
shoes that can take people home with a click of heels. The shoes can point the way with CPS and
clever LEDs(发光二极管).
Wilcox worked with another artist and a shoe-maker to produce what he calls the "No Place
Like Home" shoes.
One of the "No Place Like Home" shoes has a GPS unit inside the heel of the left shoe. It
communicates wirelessly (无线方式) with the right shoe and provides data for the LED lights. The
LEDs on the left too guide the wearer in the right direction while those on the right too show
how much of the journey still remains.
It may be an art project. There's only one pair, but it's not hard to imagine a similar, more
everyday pair of shoes for children, old people or those who always lose their ways in the future.
At present, the "No Place Like Home" shoes are on show ( 展览)in London.
71. What has Dominic Wilcox created?
72. What can the shoes use to point the way?
73. How many pairs of "No Place Like Home" shoes are created now?
74. Where are the "No Place Like Home" shoes on show?
75. Do you like the "No Place Like Home" shoes? Why?
