Once upon a time there was a little boy Philip who was raised in an orphanage (孤儿院). Philip had always desired that he could fly like a bird. There were birds at the zoo that were much bigger than he and they could fly. “Why can’t I?” he thought. “Is there something wrong with me?”
There was another little boy Walid who was crippled, always wishing that he could walk and run like other normal little boys and girls. “Why can’t I be like them?” he thought.
One day Philip ran away from the orphanage. He came upon a park where he found Walid playing in the sandbox. He ran over to the little boy and asked him if he had ever wanted to fly like a bird. “No,” said Walid. “But I have wondered what it would be like to walk and run.” “That is very sad.” said Philip. “Do you think we could be friends?” he said to Walid in the sandbox. “Sure.” said Walid.
The two little boys played for hours, making sand castles and making really funny sounds with their mouths, laughing real hard. Then Walid’s father came with a wheelchair to pick up his son. Philip ran over to the father and whispered something into his ear. “That would be OK,” said the man. Philip ran over to his new friend, “You are my only friend and I am eager to make you walk and run, and there is something that I can do for you.”
Philip turned around and told Walid to slide up onto his back, running across the grass faster and faster with Walid on his back. Soon the wind just whistled across the two little boys’ faces.
Walid’s father began to cry as he watched his son cheered up and flapping his arms up and down in the wind, all the while yelling at the top of his voice, “I’M FLYTNG, DADDY. I’M FLYNNG!”

C
The landscape of parents staying at home is changing, challenging old ideas about who takes care of the children. While moms usually did this in the past, a recent study by Pew Research Center shows more dads are staying at home. Over the last 30 years, the number of dads staying at home has gone up from 11% in 1989 to 18% in 2021.
Economics is the most significant part of this change. As women do better in school — with 53.1% of adults with a bachelor’s degree being women and get better jobs, families are thinking about different ways to share responsibilities. Women are getting better paying jobs, like in medicine and law, making some families decide that having the dad at home and the mom as the main earner is the best choice. Chris Braaten from California knew his wife, with a higher degree, could earn more, so he happily stayed at home.
The wish for one parent to stay at home often matches what both partners want. Many dads, not happy with their jobs, find more joy in taking care of their children. Spending meaningful time with family and feeling satisfied often matter more than staying in the workforce.
The high cost of childcare is also making parents think differently. Childcare can be very expensive, ranging from $4,810 to over $15,000 per child each year. This leads some families to consider new ways, like having the dad stay home, to handle these costs.
Cannon Ingalls and Jeff Carlson show this too. Ingalls, moving from Missouri to Minneapolis, chose his wife’s better-paying job over his own. Carlson in Colorado found that most of his salary was going to childcare, so he decided to stay at home to avoid money stress.
As the idea of parents staying at home continues to change, economic factors, along with new thoughts about gender (性别) roles and a wish for more meaningful family time, are making more dads choose to stay at home.
8. How is Paragraph 1 mainly developed?
A. By sharing stories of dads staying at home.
B. By presenting data over the past three decades.
C. By comparing the income of different families.
D. By stressing the benefits of women’s education.
9. What mainly contributes to more stay-at-home dads?
A. Social expectations in today’s society.
B. Fathers being dissatisfied with their jobs.
C. Changing preferences in family structures.
D. Changes in women’s education and economic roles.
10. Why are Chris Braaten and Cannon Ingalls mentioned in the text?
A. To serve as typical examples.
B. To show their close relationship.
C. To show their different personalities.
D. To provide some background information.
11. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. The Decline of Traditional Gender Roles
B. The Growing Trend of Stay-at-Home Dads
C. The Challenges Faced by Working Mothers
D. The Effects of Traditional Parenting Methods
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. A 11. B

【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第一段中“While moms usually did this in the past, a recent study by Pew Research Center shows more dads are staying at home. Over the last 30 years, the number of dads staying at home has gone up from 11% in 1989 to 18% in 2021.(虽然过去妈妈们通常是这样做的,但皮尤研究中心最近的一项研究表明,越来越多的爸爸呆在家里。在过去的30年里,全职爸爸的比例从1989年的11%上升到2021年的18%。)”可知,第一段主要通过提供过去三十年的全职爸爸所占比例的数据,说明越来越多的父亲留在家中的情况。故选B。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段中“Economics is the most significant part of this change. As women do better in school — with 53.1% of adults with a bachelor’s degree being women and get better jobs, families are thinking about different ways to share responsibilities. Women are getting better paying jobs, like in medicine and law, making some families decide that having the dad at home and the mom as the main earner is the best choice.(经济情况是这一变化中最重要的部分。
Cannon Ingalls and Jeff Carlson show this too. Ingalls, moving from Missouri to Minneapolis, chose his wife’s better-paying job over his own. D
It was a quiet early afternoon in the library, and we librarians were enjoying a chat at the library desk. Suddenly, a regular reader, who had been reading a magazine, marched up to us, gave us an annoyed “Shush (嘘)!” and went back to her seat.
Shocked into silence, we tried not to laugh. How strange for a group of librarians to be shushed by a reader! Shouldn’t it be the other way around?
Well, it seems hard to explain. If you’re a baby boomer (婴儿潮出生的人) like me, you probably remember libraries as places of adults’ silent reading. These days, however, libraries are more like busy community centers, where being noisy to some degree is the new normal, especially when kids are taking part.
I am a loud librarian. My voice is naturally on the louder side. The hundreds of programs I led as a children’s librarian were filled with singing, dancing, movement exercises and cheerful readings of books with crowds of children and their caregivers. No shushing allowed!
Growing knowledge about the importance of kids and teens learning through hands-on experiences has since caused a sea change in how public libraries connect with young readers. These types of programs like board games, poetry reading and story times certainly aren’t designed to be silent.
But it’s a balancing act. Not all readers—or librarians—like the idea of a noisy library. It’s clear to me now that on the day my colleagues and I were shushed by a reader, we should have been using our “library voices” as we talked. Still, it’s unlikely that libraries will ever return to the days when they were places of silence. There’s just too much fun and learning happening. I heartily agree with my friend Rachel Payne, an early-childhood service educator at the Brooklyn Public Library, who told me, “When I visit a library and it is quiet, I always feel a bit sad. A library where conversations are happening and tables are full is a very good thing!”
12. How did the author think of the shush from a reader?
A. Unexpectedly funny. B. Really annoying. C. Quite necessary. D. Very heartwarming.
13. What can be inferred about today’s libraries?
A. They serve kids only. B. They become quieter.
C. They are less popular. D. They have different functions.
14. Why does the author quote Rachel Payne?
A. To show different voices. B. To express the author’s idea.
C. To make the end interesting. D. To promote a new reading method.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. How to Act in the Library B. It’s OK for a Library to Be Noisy
C. Why to Keep Silent in the Library D. It’s Necessary for Librarians to Change
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. B 15. B

One Sunday morning, Tony woke up to a quiet house. Usually, Mom was awake making breakfast and cleaning the kitchen, but not today. After hearing his mom coughing, Tony knocked on her bedroom door and asked with great concern. “Mom, are you OK?” “Honey,” Mom said weakly, “I have a terrible cold. You can have cereal (燕麦) for breakfast and watch cartoons. I’m going to stay in bed.”
Tony poured some cereal into a bowl and ate it dry. Mom must have been feeling very bad if she was staying in bed all day. How could Tony help? First, he wiped up the crumbs (碎屑) of cereal he had left on the kitchen counter. He also put away the cereal box neatly, so the kitchen looked just as it had done when he woke up. But what else could he do? Sunday was the day when Mom did the laundry (选衣服). Tony loved to watch the clothes spinning (旋转) in the machine. That should be fun to do. So, he ran to get the laundry basket, in which was his mother’s favorite white dress, some other clothes and a pair of red socks.
Tony opened the door of the washing machine and put the clothes inside. He had watched Mom do laundry lots of times, so he knew where to find the washing powder and how much to pour into the machine. Finally, he closed the door and pressed the big button that said “START”. Tony looked through the round glass window. Water was pouring in, and the machine was starting to spin, making his clothing tumble around. That was easy.
Tony watched cartoons until he heard the washing machine beep. That meant the washing was finished. Tony opened the door to take out the damp clothes. He took out a few at a time and moved them into the dryer. Every piece seemed clean, and Tony felt proud. Then he pulled out a pink dress.
1. 续写词数应80词左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
But as far as he could remember, there was no pink dress in the laundry basket. While he was still wondering why there was a pink dress, he took out the pair of red socks (短袜).

【答案】 But as far as he could remember, there was no pink dress in the laundry basket. While he was still wondering why there was a pink dress, he took out the pair of red socks (短袜). Suddenly, it struck him that the white dress had been colored by the socks. “Oh no, that’s Mom’s favorite dress.” he said to himself, a sense of guilt washing over him. Thinking over and over, Tony decided to tell his mom the truth. Tony nervously knocked on his mom’s bedroom door again. “What’s up, dear?” his mom opened the door and asked. “Mom, I’m so sorry. I ruined your favorite dress by mistake. Now, it’s a different color.” Seeing Tony’s red face, his mom smiled and said gently, “It doesn’t matter. It was really thoughtful of you to help me do the laundry. This pink dress is beautiful. I like it.” Hearing her words, Tony breathed a sigh of relief and smiled.

1. 续写词数应为80词左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
But as far as he could remember, there was no pink dress in the laundry basket. While he was still wondering why there was a pink dress, he took out the pair of red socks (短袜).
